This Spring are many great events, activities and regular groups meeting on our doorstep, and this magazine contains their details. For example, the Ledbury Country Market began life at the end of World War Two and to this day provides fresh and delicious local produce. Every Friday morning a dedicated group of local suppliers set up in Burgage Hall to sell a wide array of preserves, cakes and savouries, plus seasonal fruit and veg. Its an absolute gem of a market and if you haven’t already been, read about it on Page 48 and arrange to visit soon! Enjoy the read!

Advice

Who pays for long-term social care? By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall As a society we are living longer and it is becoming much more common to require long term care in older age. Who pays for it is a complex matter and this should be the very first point to establish. Only then can a suitable solution be properly advised and recommended. Many people face this issue for the first time when an older relative needs to go into a home. It can then become extremely urgent to get clear, reliable and unbiased advice and information, in order to take whatever action is in the best interest of your loved one. As a qualified adviser I make a point of insisting a number of key steps are followed to establish whether the individual’s care needs really do have to be funded in part or in full by themselves or their family. Here is a taster of some key questions that need answering: - Understanding the nature and extent of the individual’s care needs and the cost of meeting them - Understanding what care services can be secured free of charge from the local authority or other third party - Establish whether the individual qualifies for free NHS Continuing Health Care funding (NHS CHC) - Establish whether the individual qualifies for an NHS contribution to Registered Nursing Care - Understand the extent to which the local authority will fund any assessed social care needs - Understand the entitlement, if any, to state benefits An appropriately qualified independent financial adviser can arrange a suitable solution to fund long-term care needs; however, I do not believe that same adviser is best placed to establish the answers to the fundamental questions detailed above. Fortunately there are companies out there that do exactly that.

6

We believe best practice is the commissioning of an independent and unbiased company to answer each and every question, thus ensuring you are fully aware of rights and entitlements specific to the individual’s circumstances. This can often be established by way of a telephone consultation, usually free for the first 15 minutes to answer urgent questions, and then if required, a 1 hour telephone consultation or a more in-depth bespoke care report, each offering information to help know and understand the best way forward. There will be an expense, however when compared to the benefits gained, it is money well spent. Once you are in receipt of this information, and it is established there is a need for self- funding, then the journey of finding the right solution to meet this need can continue, whether it be rearranging existing investments, securing a lifelong annuity to pay some or all of the care fees, or a deferred payment plan, to name a few. What is imperative is that you speak to an independent financial adviser who is both qualified and specialises in this very crucial area of advice; they will will seek out other specialists in this field to ensure each and every individual receives their full entitlement to long term care help.

Rob Weale is a founding partner at Smith Weale Associates. If you would like to find out more about funding long term social care contact us. We welcome your enquiry, initial meetings are at our expense and without obligation.

Clusters Emporium Clusters Emporium, based at The Hop Pocket in Bishops Frome, is a place to while away some time discovering all sorts of miniature gems. It’s run by Sue Hubbard, who has chosen a wide range of stock for all kinds of interests and tastes. ‘We stock plenty of vintage and collectable items, from porcelain to items of furniture, which we hand pick from sales. Currently we have some beautiful sideboards, dining tables and welsh dressers as well as retro pieces including kitchen chairs.’ The emporium also has a pick and mix button bar, with thousands of buttons to choose from, stored in sweetshop jars. ‘Some people spend hours sifting through them, just to find the perfect button!’ laughs Sue. Items made by local craftspeople are showcased at Clusters, and there’s a range of crystals, incense and other related items. ‘Once people find us, they return again and again’ says Sue. ‘Our emporium is a place to come and have a mooch, spending as much time as you want to browse. We hope to see you soon.’ Clusters Emporium is open from Tuesday to Saturday between 10am and 5.30pm, and from 11am until 5pm on Sunday. Its located at The Hop Pocket in Bishop’s Frome (WR6 5BT) just off the A4103 between Worcester and Hereford.

Driving Miss Daisy Driving Miss Daisy is a companionship and transport service helping older people to maintain their independence. Whether it’s a visit to a friend, the supermarket or a trip to the doctors, this friendly, caring service is there to help. ‘It’s not just about driving, it’s also about companionship’ says Alastair Cameron, who runs the service in Malvern with his wife, Katherine Eglington. ‘We aren’t carers, but we do take extra care of our customers. We don’t just drop them at the supermarket, we take them around the store helping them get their items and then unpack the groceries when they are home again. If it’s a trip to the doctor, we can accompany them and even report back to a concerned son or daughter. Three of our vehicles are wheelchair adapted so we can carry ust about anyone in our cars. This includes pets to vets too.’ As well as Alastair and Katherine, the other drivers are Bev and Beatrice. They are all first-aid trained and DBS-checked. ‘Some people specifically ask for a lady driver which is fine’ continues Alastair ‘and unlike using a taxi company, you’ll know who is coming to collect you.’

The company has an operator’s licence from the local authority and carries out other duties including school runs. They also take people to airports or cruise drop-offs and pick-ups at any time, seven days a week, with four cars now available. ‘Our catch phrase is ‘We are family when family can’t be there” says Alastair. ‘We run a reliable service and our pricing is very competitive - you’ll be surprised at how cost-effective our service can be. For people concerned about a loved one, we look after them like we would our own child or grandmother’

What’s On

nest of voices An evening of choral music, covering everything from Norwegian folk to comedy, returns to The Nest near Ledbury this spring. Each unique performance takes place within the intimate confines of a yurt, nestled in the rolling Herefordshire countryside. After the runaway success of last autumn’s Nest of Voices, the popular mini-concert series returns once again, with four different and unique performances on successive Thursdays during May.

Thursday 9th May Cotswold Canal Singers Songs of Love and Spring The Cotswold Canal Singers were founded in 2016, to raise money for the Cotswold Canal Trust and other local causes. Drawing singers from several excellent choirs, they provide variety and entertainment, as well as a rich musical experience. Works chosen vary from madrigal to barbershop, from mediaeval to contemporary, with highlights including Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols and William Byrd’s Great Service. Hugh Barton, the director, also directs the Stroud Refugee Aid Choir, 100+ singers meeting once a year in ‘Come and Sing’ events.

Thursday 2nd May Akervinda Swedish Folksong Quartet Jazz singers at heart, the four members of vocal quartet Åkervinda share a deep love of folk music, and give new life to the Scandinavian folk tunes in their original and modern interpretations. Like so many storytellers and artists before them, Iris, Agnes, Linda and Lise carry tales of women throughout the ages, embodied in a visual musical live performance. The group have performed at an array of European vocal festivals and folk venues and at venues in Canada and the USA. They come to The Nest straight from a performance with The Swingles in London. www.akervinda.com

Group

40 years of malvern quilters Malvern Quilters is 40 years old! This friendly group started life in 1979 as a class run by Brenda Cox, who had learned the craft from a friend in the United States of America. The early group had around 30 members and exhibited its work for the first time at Malvern Winter Gardens in the early 1980s. Since then there have been many hundreds more members. Today, the group welcomes all abilities, from absolute beginners to those with more experience. There are two meetings every month with a varied programme of speakers and demonstrations. Recent and future topics are as diverse as a Procion Dye workshop and creating quilts on a geological theme – the group also holds a summer party in July. Before all of that, the fortieth anniversary is being marked with a Ruby Anniversary Exhibition over the weekend of 6th and 7th April between 10am and 4pm. Taking place at Colwall Village Hall (Mill Lane, £3 entry), it’s a chance to see some of the group’s work such as The Ruby

24

Quilt, made to mark the anniversary year. Inspired by the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, it was first exhibited last year at the Festival of Quilts, held at the NEC in Birmingham. Not only beautiful to look at, the quilt serves another purpose. A raffle to win the quilt is being staged, with the proceeds donated to Young Minds, a charity offering support and advice for young people affected by mental health issues. If you can’t make it along to the exhibition, photographs of Malvern Quilters’ work will be on display along Church Walk between Waitrose and Church Street. This takes place in the fortnight leading up to the exhibition weekend. If you’re interested in joining the group, you’ll find more details at the exhibition, or you can visit the Quilters’ website, www.malvernquilters.co.uk

try something new How do I start running? Running is becoming one of the most popular ways of improving health and fitness, but it can be hard to get started on your own. Which is why Sally Smart, a UK Athletics coach, together with the support of Ledbury Harriers, started an absolute beginners running course called Couch to 5k. People who aren’t active can have a go at running with other beginners over a gently progressive, nine-week course. At the final session each participant is presented with their own C25k graduate’s t shirt, before joining the other participants at a local 5km Parkrun. The next C25k course starts on Tuesday 30th April at 6.15pm meeting at Ledbury Rugby Club. This summer course is free and for more information, call 07468 793405, email sallysmart1000@gmail.com or visit www.ledburyharriers.org.uk

Ledbury & District U3A The University of the Third Age meets every month in Ledbury, with a busy and varied programme of talks, events and activities. The meeting on 18th April welcomes the author Phillip Caine from Cumbria, who will give a light-hearted talk on his ten years working in the Middle East. On 16th May David Harrison’s talk is titled ‘Monmouth – Oddities and Curiosities’, covering some interesting architecture, bridges and toll houses. It also includes people with connections to Monmouth including Horatio Nelson, Charles Rolls, Rudolf Hess and Tommy Cooper! If you’d like to know more about U3A membership, call (01531) 633637 or visit www.ledburyu3a.org.uk

Why not come cycling? Ledbury Area Cycle Forum has some useful advice for enjoying the beautiful spring countryside on two wheels. Do you have a dusty, rusty two-wheeled friend in the garage which hasn’t seen the light of day for a while? Are you missing the joy of the breeze on your face and the sun on your back? Why not explore the lanes and byways of Herefordshire by bicycle. The Ledbury area is a great place to start. Not sure where to go? The network of lanes in Herefordshire is a cyclist’s delight (though watch out for potholes!). The Ledbury Area Cycle Forum has collated an online library of routes, cafes, cycle shops and much more on its website comecyclingledbury.com for road cyclists and mountain bikers alike. There are also a few rides arranged for all ages and abilities, to coincide with the Poetry Festival and Big Apple events. Don’t want to go alone? There are many local groups who organise regular rides. For example, Ledbury CTC is a local group of Cyclists’ Touring Club (now known as Cycling UK). It aims to support cyclists and promote bicycle use for all ages and abilities. The local group organises social rides each Tuesday (all day) and Thursday (half day) starting from Ledbury Market House at 10am. Rides are at easy to moderate pace, with coffee stops (also for lunch on Tuesdays). We always wait for slower riders, and our experienced members can help with mechanical problems. Whether you are a beginner or returning to cycling, one of these rides may be for you. For more information, visit www.cyclinguk.org/local-groups/ledbury Worried the hills are too steep? Ledbury Area Cycle Forum hosts an electric bike, for loan to people interested in trying out before buying. Gardening

green fingers It’s all go down at Caves Folly as Bridget gears up for warmer spring weather The growing season is well and truly underway with every available space full of plants. There is so much work to do that there is not enough time in the day! We are attending the Malvern Show again this year and selling the usual array of vegetable plants, alpines and herbaceous perennials. It is inspiring to meet other growers and designers and share experiences, it is an opportunity to look at new varieties and compare growing techniques. After forty years in horticulture I am doubtful as to the merit of many ‘new ’garden cultivars. There are a lot which are worthy of a new name, others are a very slight variation on the original but I find they are not always as floriferous or vigorous. This is of course only my opinion - many expert breeders spend a lifetime perfecting a flower or leaf shape. There is so much to do at this time of year, and it all needs to be done now! It is also a really exciting time with the promise of sunny days and gardens full of flowers, fruit and vegetables. Jobs to do in the garden If you are growing vegetables, make yourself a cold frame. It is so useful for bringing on tender seedlings and hardening off plants. Prune shrubs such as Forsythia, Chaenomeles after flowering. Bridget runs Caves Folly Nurseries on Evendine Lane in Colwall (WR13 6DX). They are open from March until October, Thursdays to Saturdays from 10 - 5. You can contact them on 01684 540631 or visit their website:

We have thousands of wonderful home grown plants. Alpines, Perennials, Herbs and Vegetable plants. All grown in our organic peat free compost. RHS approved peat free compost for sale. Friendly advice always available from Bridget and the team.

Open Thurs-Sat 10-5 You can find us at the bottom of Evendine Lane off Colwall Green www.cavesfolly.com Bridget@cavesfolly.com | 01684 540631 Trim back hard; favourites such as Lavenders and Penstemon, Helichrysum and Perovskia will benefit from new growth. Trim off any frost damaged leaves from evergreens to encourage new growth. Plant Mediterranean-type plants such as Cistus, Ceonothus and Hebe as they like warm soils. Prepare containers with new compost and plant out summer bedding in mid-May. Keep containers watered in dry spells, it is easy to get caught out at this time of year. The Kitchen Garden Plant out newly-chitted potatoes in April. Sow vegetables direct, including beetroot, carrot, lettuce, leek, radish, turnip and spring onions. April is also the time to sow indoors - runner beans, french beans, courgette, pumpkin and squashes. If you are emptying old compost bins, check carefully in case any snakes, hedgehogs or frogs are still hibernating. Remember to make time for enjoying the garden and watching nature in all its spring exuberance. Come and visit us at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival between 9th and 12th May. We are next to the West Gate. See Page 19 and you might even win some tickets!

Recipe

Bara brith Delicious and really easy to make! 1. Soak the fruit in the tea (with the bags) overnight. 2. The next day, pre-heat the oven to gas mark4/350F/180ÂşC and grease and line a 2lb (900g) loaf tin (I use a paper liner). 3. Remove the tea bags and add the margarine, sugar, milk and treacle to the fruit and bring to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and leave to cool. 4. Add the flour, mixed spice, and beaten eggs and beat well with a wooden spoon. 5. Turn into the prepared tin and bake just below the middle of the oven for one and a quarter hours until a skewer comes out clean.

Ingredients 350g mixed dried fruit (I use a combination of golden raisins, apricots, sultanas, currants, dried cranberries) 350ml tea (I use 4 teabags in a small pot of tea and always add the teabags to the dried fruit to soak overnight ) 100g butter 100g soft light brown sugar 50 ml milk 1 tablespoon of black treacle 225g self raising flour 2 teaspoons of mixed spice and a little grated nutmeg 2 eggs well beaten

6. Remove from oven and leave to cool in the tin for 15 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely It works well to make two at a time and freeze one. It’s perfect sliced and spread with butter or cream cheese or served with a thick piece of mature cheddar cheese.

LEDBURY COUNTRY MARKET It’s a Friday morning and Burgage Hall on Church Lane in Ledbury is bustling with activity. There’s a smell of breakfast in the air, and despite the relatively early hour, there are already several people browsing the stalls or enjoying food from the kitchen. Many of those coming through the door do so on a weekly basis, to buy their favourite items. Others have travelled from further afield; visitors from north Gloucestershire and south Herefordshire use the market as the start of a day out in the town. Tourists from much further afield sometimes pop in and invariably take something away. The market opens at 8.30am and there are usually those who arrive at the very start, enjoy a breakfast and stock up on their favourite items. It’s fair to say the Country Market has become something of an institution for Ledbury.

local producers. The veg stall has many seasonal favourites, while the cakes offer a mouth-watering choice. There is smoked meat and fish, locallysourced honey and a vast range of preserves. When in season, a wide range of local fruit as well as eggs, savoury items, garden plants and seedlings are for sale. Everything has been grown, cooked or stitched within a 15 mile radius of the town. The origins of country markets like this owe their existence to the formation of the Women’s Institute. Ledbury’s first WI Market was founded in 1944. It remains popular today and if you pop in for a look one Friday morning, you’ll see why.

The stalls sell a wide range of produce, all of which has something in common – it comes from

Theatre News Oscar Wilde’s

The Picture of Dorian Gray Tilted Wig Productions are proud to present an exciting and bold new production of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray starring Jonathan Wrather, known for his roles on both stage and screen, as Lord Henry Wotton. The play, based on the classic novel, celebrates Wilde’s wonderful language and will appeal to audiences old and new. The Picture of Dorian Gray tells the story of a cultured, wealthy, and beautiful young man’s downfall through moral corruption and seduction. Dorian, who, fearing that his good looks would fade as he grows old, wishes that a portrait painted of him could bear the burden of the ageing process, leaving him forever young. But at what cost...? Featuring Wilde’s famous wit and a stellar cast, The Picture of Dorian Gray is a fast-paced thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat right up until the final scenes of the play – providing an entertaining night out for all. The Picture of Dorian Gray will be appearing on stage at Malvern Theatres from Tuesday 7th to Saturday 11th May. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk
