I’m always impressed by the sense of community spirit in West Malvern, as well as the range of creative people who live here. West Malvern Voices encompasses both; an informal choir set up to support the church and community events, bringing people together to create beautiful music, open to all regardless of musical ability.

Continuing the community theme, our local Horticultural Society holds its annual memorial lecture in October, which raises funds to help young people living locally. A great chance to support a worthwhile cause, which includes an evening of entertainment from plant expert Roy Lancaster. Keep reading to find out more.

Pension Income: A Third Option?

Back in April I wrote about the changes to Pensions concerning the purchase of a lifetime annuity, and the fact you could now delay that purchase and stay invested. Of course with the current market turmoil, risking your pension fund is not a very attractive proposition. Then again, with annuity rates at an historic low, neither is purchasing a lifetime annuity. The good news is there’s a third option, an option that is new to the market place, removes investment risk but does not commit the funds forever. That third option is a Fixed Term Annuity.

What is a Fixed Term Annuity?

Fixed Term Annuities provide a guaranteed level of income for a specific term. This approach enables retired people to enjoy certainty with payments, as they would with a Lifetime Annuity, but only for the term selected rather than throughout life.

At the end of the term a Guaranteed Maturity Amount is provided, with which a further Fixed Term Annuity can be purchased. Alternatively, a conventional Lifetime Annuity or Investment Linked Annuity can be purchased. Other options may also be allowed at this point depending on the pension legislation in force at the time.

At the end of the term of the Fixed Term Annuity, the income can be reset according to requirements at that moment. The Fixed Term Annuity provides future flexibility by offering the ability to change the amount and shape of income at agreed intervals during retirement.

Income Levels There is no minimum level of income that needs to be taken, which means you can take the tax-free lump sum alone and defer income to a later date. There is a maximum income level whose limit is set by the Government Actuary’s Department (known as GAD); more often than not the income is higher than that available under a current lifetime annuity because rates are at an historic low.

A Fixed Term Annuity can be free of investment risk.

The income payments are guaranteed, as well as the Guaranteed Maturity Amount available at the end of the term, which is known at the outset of the arrangement.

As with a Lifetime Annuity, if you are married or have a financially dependent partner, the annuity can be

set up to continue paying them an income after you have died. This can be at the full rate, or at a reduced level, for example two thirds or a half. However, this continuing income is only payable for the remainder of the fixed term, with the Guaranteed Maturity Amount then being available for reinvestment by the surviving spouse or partner.

Exit strategies Fixed Term Annuity contracts expire at the end of the agreed term and offer the investor the opportunity to review and select the most appropriate income structure at that time. It is not usually possible to exit the contract during the fixed term but some providers offer the facility to switch to an enhanced lifetime annuity due to ill health. You may be eligible for an Enhanced Annuity if your health has worsened in the period between establishing the Fixed Term Annuity and the maturity date of the plan. This may lead to a significantly higher income.

Key Advantages of a fixed term annuity • You have immediate access to some or all of the tax-free lump sum available • You can choose to only take the tax-free lump sum and no income • There is no exposure to investment risk • Your income is guaranteed for the fixed term of the annuity, provided it remains within GAD limits The above is not an exhaustive list of advantages and there are disadvantages to consider. Its important to seek proper advice from an Independent Specialist. An annuity should always be purchased after a full comparison of products, as huge variations can exist in what your current pension provider and the open market can offer. Every policy holder has the right to shop around.

Mad About Every year the Wyche & Colwall Horticultural Society stages a lecture from a prominent plant expert.

This year the guest of honour will be the horticulturalist and broadcaster Roy Lancaster.

The event started 25 years ago in memory of the Society's former President Percy Picton. The charity's aim is to promote interest in horticulture while proceeds from the evening are used to help local students.

Percy Picton had a professional career working with plants and had spent the whole of his working life in the world of horticulture. He was nationally known through his appearances on television and radio.

During his years in Colwall, Percy Picton undertook the judging at many local flower shows. He also built a reputation as an immensely popular speaker about plants and how to grow them. He hated to use slides and a projector, always preferring to use live plant material in season to illustrate his talks. He devoted much time to encouraging gardeners to learn more about the world of plants, especially young people wishing to follow a career in horticulture.

Following his death in 1984, members of the horticultural society set up a registered charity in his memory. The Percy Picton Memorial Fund began life two years later, in 1986, and began putting on an annual lecture. Its principal aim is to help students who live in the areas around the Malvern Hills.

Priority is given to applicants from Colwall, followed by others in WR13 WR14 and HR8 postal codes. If sufficient funds are still available in any one year,

all WR and HR postal codes are taken in. A tandem priority is also given to students at Pershore College, which these days is part of the Warwickshire Group of Colleges. Students may be on full or part-time courses leading to full time employment in the horticultural industry.

Successful candidates receive a monetary grant to help with their studies and work experience.

In addition there is an annual Percy Picton Prize awarded by Pershore College to an outstanding student of horticulture. Ticket sales from the annual memorial lecture are an important source of income for the charity. The lecture is always given by a well known gardening personality and attracts an audience from a wide area.

On its 25th anniversary, 2011 is a special year for the charity. To mark this special year, Roy Lancaster, one of Britain’s best known horticulturalists is conducting the lecture. His talk is called “Mad About Plants� and will take us on a fascinating journey through a lifetime of studying, collecting and growing trees, shrubs and perennials. Plants has travelled the world in search of plants including such varied countries as Georgia, Chile, Iran, Turkey, New Zealand, Brazil, Ecuador, Japan, North America, South Africa, Malaya and China. He has been a member of the Royal Horticultural Society for 40 years and is vice-chairman of the society’s Floral Committee B and a member of several other committees.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Horticulture and President of The Hardy Plant Society. Roy continues to give regular lectures, he also writes and is well known for his many broadcasts on BBC TV’s Gardeners’ World.

All About... ...West Malvern Voices West Malvern Voices is a choir group with teachers who come from across the globe to donate their time and expertise about different types of music and singing. The group encourages local musical talent and offers musical support for St James’ Church and community events. It began a year ago with Ian Brasier and Paul Houghman as its founders.

Tell us about your choir

We are incredibly informal, we don’t teach stuff. Not many people can read music and it’s really laid back.

We describe it as a self-help group which basically is an acknowledgement that we’re really rather amateur and our main aim is to have a bit of fun.

West Malvern is a very interesting village anyway, it’s quite distinct from other areas, there’s a lot of music that goes on here and there’s a lot of diversity within that music.

Although you are an amateur group it sounds like you sing some beautiful music?

Yes, occasionally. But that’s not the whole focus of it.

It’s good to sound good but it’s more of that folk spirit in which the intention is not to be perfect in music but to sing with other people. It’s the antidote of ‘X Factor’, in which there’s a constant competitiveness and belittling of peoples imperfections, whereas we have fun and we make some good music. At the moment it’s mainly choral though we occasionally use guitar, mandolin and cello. I think the church is being used more which is one of the aspirations of the church community, to be more open. Over the year the West Malvern Voices have contributed to at least three services and we sang an ancient Jewish chant, a Native American Hawaiian chant and some American folk music.

You and Ian Brassier are co-

founders of the group, how did it all begin?

It was initially a church orientated thing. I happened to go along one Sunday and met Rosemary Herbert who is the deacon and one of the most welcoming women I’ve ever met. I started talking to people at the Church and there was an appetite for music. Ian and I were having coffee afterwards and we got talking.

What’s in store for the group in the coming year?

Michael Bonser is coming to teach Native American Dream Dance songs in Spanish and Mayan and Andy Garbi is coming to teach neo-classical songs.

There’s a mixture of ancient Jewish songs, bawdy soldier songs from the Middle Ages and a Gaya chant. We’ve got old-English folk songs being taught as well, so it really is incredibly diverse. A number of our members also have things up their sleeves that there not telling me about just yet!

How many members do you have currently?

We have ten singers who turn up on most nights, from a bank of around twenty. Overall there are probably forty people who pop in and out, which really is fine if they only want to sing occasionally. Last year most of us joined in with John Raine’s Choir. John is the organist at the church and he organises a carol service for the church each year. We all joined him, singing a Spanish carol with mandolin which was great. It was a very different tenor from the normal choral music but it really worked. My daughter keeps singing it still!

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?

STEEL OR CAST IRON?

Although we can’t claim that burning any fuel is good for the environment, the big advantage of wood is that its a renewable resource. As long as new trees continue to grow in place of those used for fuel, the process is sustainable. Some carbon emissions will be caused by the cultivation, felling and transport of the wood, but as long as the fuel is sourced locally, these can be kept to a minimum. If you’re interested, its worth asking your wood supplier whether their work is ‘sustainable’.

SEASONED WOOD

A single cubic foot of live oak can contain around 5 and a half litres of water! (the equivalent of one and a quarter gallons). So its important to season wood, allowing it to dry naturally to remove the moisture content. Burning ‘wet’ wood is less efficient and can produce only ten percent of the heat that would be generated by burning properly seasoned wood.

So-called ‘ green’ wood can also cause build ups of tar within the flue. Hardwood usually needs to be seasoned for at least two years.

INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE Make sure that your stove is fitted by either a HETAS or NAPPIT registered engineer. These engineers are versed in the building regulations to ensure the safety of the installation. Once installed, I recommend the flue is swept twice a year. Of course how much soot

As a general rule, the heavier the gauge of metal used in a stove, the longer the life of the product and the greater the efficiency. Steel is more flexible than cast iron and can withstand over-firing. What’s more, steel stoves often incorporate the latest technology, can be super efficient and will last longer.

But steel designs are plainer and less ornate. Cast iron is not so happy with over-firing and won’t like the huge temperature changes found in a wood-burning stove. However, because they are “cast” they can incorporate greater detail and decorative relief and some have stunning and colourful vitreous enamel effects.

HEALTH BENEFITS? The Solid Fuel Association says that burning a mix of coal and wood promotes healthy circulation of air in a house, minimising condensation and helping to get rid of mould spores which might be present. The fire can draw other gases and particles out of the house. The Association’s website claims that medical research has shown people living in houses with solid fuel heating are significantly less likely to suffer from asthma and hay fever compared to those living in houses with other forms of heating. While I can’t comment on the veracity of the statement, I do know there’s nothing more relaxing than curling up in front of a warm stove, with the wood glowing, on a cold autumn night – the ultimate in well being!

Volunteering for the Conservators

By Helen Stace Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who took the time and trouble to contact me with thoughts following my efforts to provoke debate about the future of the hills. I had some useful feedback which I will be following up with the people concerned so that I can gain a better understanding of their views. I feel there is a real need to evaluate the impacts of a range of activities: looking at the ways different groups use the hills, what effect those uses might have and how they interact, so that we can work out how best to manage the land for the future. I want to see us pass the Malvern Hills on to the next generations in the best possible condition so that they too can appreciate all the aspects of the hills that we value today.

It was particularly heartening to hear from people who support the management work that the Conservators carry out – it is good to know the effort and hard work is widely appreciated.

In September, the highlight of my work with the Conservators was the opportunity for the Board to visit a work party of the Volunteers carrying out conservation work on the Malvern Hills. We were clearing bracken and bramble from a steep rocky ridge where some of the rarer plants on the hills survive, against the odds, in the thin soil. I had a lovely few hours helping out and it was a real

pleasure to talk to some of the volunteers who do so much for the Conservators – particularly in sensitive situations like this where the land cannot be managed mechanically and cattle or sheep grazing would be impractical.

There are lots of ways people can help out the Malvern Hills Conservators - here are some of the things volunteers currently do for us: • Conservation tasks in the more sensitive areas of the hills • Recording wildlife on the hills – for instance counting butterflies and looking for adders • Being a volunteer warden – looking after an individual area of the hills or being on patrol more generally • Litter picking (sadly, there is an ongoing need for this!)

• Welcoming the public and providing administrative support in the office • Carrying out research into various aspects of the hills and their history or natural history If you feel you would like to offer you time or skills in any capacity, do contact us at the office on 01684 892002.

Green Fingers Autumnal thoughts from Bridget at Caves Folly...

As I write this the nursery is being battered by high winds and Autumn is in the air. After such a beautiful summer it will seem strange to walk around in wellies again! Autumn is a time to celebrate the bounties of nature, so with a glut of fruit and veg this year it’s important to store, pickle, bottle, ferment and freeze everything we can.

The Autumn ‘clear-up’ begins this month with lots to do. In the kitchen garden it is time to harvest the pumpkins and squashes, lift carrots, beetroot and potatoes. If you dig up outdoor tomatoes and hang them in a conservatory or greenhouse they will carry on ripening inside. Spring cabbage, winter salads, Autumn onion sets and garlic can also be planted out.

Dig over vacant areas and cover with black polythene to prevent weeds. The plastic can be pulled back in winter to add well rotted manure. In the borders the perennials need cutting back as they die down, but make sure you leave plants with seed heads still attached, as food for the birds. Don’t be too tidy, lots

of little creatures rely on piles of leaves and twigs to survive through the winter.

Perennials can be divided as necessary, and now is the time to plant winter pansies, wallflowers, polyanthus and bulbs. At the same time, dig up any tender plants and put them in the conservatory or greenhouse, after last winter’s onslaught this might be wise!

When you have finished all these jobs sit back and enjoy that extra bit of time you will now have to yourself until Spring.
