The popular summer concert by Colwall Community Choir takes place this year on Saturday 2nd July. The choir is joined once again by Cadenza Brass Ensemble with a programme of music that promises a memorable summer evening. The performance is at 7pm at Colwall Village Hall, light refreshments will be served during the interval and there will be a donation bar.

The beautiful and tranquil gardens at Hellens Manor in Much Marcle open for the Annual Garden Festival on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th June. There will be exhibits of plants and flowers, specialist nurseries and horticultural accessories to browse, while food and drink is available in the marquees along with gifts to buy and artisan demonstrators to watch. The Head Gardener at Hellens, David Maddison will be leading tours of the gardens, and the television gardener Carol Klein hosts a preview reception on the Friday evening (booking required).

Tickets for the performance are £8 (or £6 concessions) and can be bought on the door or from the Colwall office of John Goodwin Estate Agents.

2. COMMEMORATIONS Herefordshire World War One Centenary Commemorations for 1916 take place in Ledbury on Saturday 25th June. There will be a parade with members of today’s armed forces joined by local cadets and displays from living history groups which include a working replica of a tank from the First World War. The activities and exhibits take place between 10am until 2pm, with the parade taking place from 2.30pm until 3.30pm.

An evening concert rounds off the day, you can find the details in our What’s On listings on Page 52.

4. FlICKS IN THE STICKS There are Flicks in the Sticks film screenings in Bosbury and Colwall during June and July. The screenings at Colwall Village Hall are Brooklyn (Cert. 12) on 10th June and A Bunch of Amateurs (Cert. 15) on 15th July. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. In Bosbury, there’s a screening of The Martian (Cert. 12A) on Friday 17th June starting at 7.30pm, entry is £5 and wine and nibbles will be available.

5. LEDBURY POETRY FESTIVAL The Ledbury Poetry Festival is celebrating its twentieth anniversary by asking local people to help ‘Wrap The Town in Poetry’. This public art project is creating artwork based around poems and will be displayed around Ledbury while the festival takes place. There are two drop-in sessions at The Master’s House on Saturday 4th and Monday 27th June from 9.30am, when you can create your own ‘diamond poem’, blending poetry and art in a unique, decorative way. WHAT DO BUDDHISTS DO ALL DAY? To find out, you can visit Coddington Court on Sunday 17th July for an open afternoon at Adhisthana, home of the Triratna Buddhist Community. Since moving in nearly three years ago, the community has been busy refurbishing the building and the grounds, which include a beautiful area of open water.

‘We want to show people around’ says Sanghadarsini, ‘not only how we are developing this place but also to find out what we do all day!’ There will be a talk on the subject at 3pm, but visitors are welcome to come along at any time between 2pm and 5pm for a look around and to enjoy a cup of tea and some cake. There will also be short sessions where you can learn more about meditation.

WEST FEST West Fest this year takes place on Saturday 2nd July from Midday until 10pm. Situated on West Malvern Playing Field, there will be three stages hosting music acts as well as craft stalls and food and drink to enjoy.

There are activities for children as well.

The event is organised by a group of volunteers, many of the resources it uses are donated, and it raises thousands of pounds for local charities and good causes. Last year’s event helped fourteen local groups with a major donation to a defibrillator which is located on the wall of the West Malvern Social Club.

Entry to the event costs £10 for adults, £6 for under 18s and under 5s are free. A family ticket is £20.

WOODY’S GYMNASIUM Woody’s Gymnasium in Ledbury is now licensed with The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, so that members of the gym can enrol onto the scheme. Since it began 60 years ago, The award has helped young people to push their personal boundaries and gain new skills.

It’s open to anyone aged between 14 and 24 years old, and Woody’s Gym hopes more of its younger members will be encouraged to join the scheme.

ighty years ago, a large crowd gathered in Priory Park to watch the celebrated playwright George Bernard Shaw plant a mulberry tree. A picture from that moment shows him wielding a shovel, throwing the first spadefuls of soil onto the tree’s roots.

A Walk with Kilvert - Eight readings from Kilvert’s Diary by Robert Payne

The tree survived until 2000 when it was blown down in a storm. Fortunately, a cutting of the original tree was sent to Malvern in Victoria, Australia, and now a sapling grown from this cutting is returning to Priory Park. The planting ceremony takes place on Saturday 25th June at Noon in Priory Park and launches a week of events for Civic Week 2016. ledbury community day More than 70 local groups will be taking part in this year’s event. On Saturday, 11th June, Ledbury will be buzzing with all kinds of activities, demonstrations and more, celebrating everything that’s good about the town.

ommunity Day is a great time to find out what you can do in Ledbury. A wide range of groups will be present to tell you about volunteering, general interest and educational opportunities of all kinds available locally, and how to improve your lifestyle.

This year the event takes place in more than a dozen venues around town which include the Burgage Hall, St Katherine’s Hall and the Community Hall. The Master’s House and Library will be open with a special photographic exhibition celebrating local food, a film featuring the Ledbury Poetry Festival, tours and other attractions.

St Katherine’s Chapel will be open, so will St Michael and All Angels Church with a number of events and the Methodist Church with a flower festival will be there to welcome you. Leadon Bank is putting on an afternoon of entertainment including a ukulele band and there’s a chance

to try a new sport at the Tennis Club and the Bowling Club.

The Community Brass Band will be providing the music, and Ledbury Swifts junior footballers will be completing a unique challenge - cycling to Sweden under the Market House, raising money for the club’s annual footballing trip to the country.

You can hear more about plans to make Ledbury a Value Town and talk to children from the primary school who will tell you about their Values School.

You can also visit “Little Sweden” at the Talbot, try Cage Football, call in at the mobile police station in the High Street and find out about Ledbury’s Armed Forces Day on 25th June, at the Royal British Legion.

Have you considered making a Lasting Power of Attorney?

Lasting Powers of Attorney are important legal documents that allow you to appoint one or more people to manage your finances, or to make decisions about your health and welfare, when you are unable to do so. People tend to put off appointing attorneys, as we think we will never need the use of these documents! By Kaspa Thompson Suzuki Roshi was once asked if anything was constant in this life. He replied with one word: change.

a

couple of weeks ago I watched a wave of hail moving from behind the hills, over the temple and through the valley. Directly above my office, directly above my writing desk, is the dining room balcony. Drum-rolls of hard ice falling onto the flat surface of the balcony roused me from my concentration. I went upstairs to watch the weather.

A few days earlier it had felt like summer had arrived. The sunshine was bright, and the air was warm. It was a real change from the sun and cold wind of winter and spring days. The sun-rose in the garden started to flower. Each delicate, Barbie-pink, flower lasts for just one day.

On my day off, I was looking forward to a day in the heat. I sat in the garden eating breakfast, looking out over the copper-beech, with its orange-yellow blossom, and the plum tree just coming into leaf. Grey clouds drifted in, settling over the sky like a soft blanket. Still, I spent most of the day outside.

In the evening it started to rain. Noisy rain. The cats ran inside, mewing at us, complaining about the weather. I could hear the water from the roof flooding down the downspout and overwhelming the drains. It rained hard through the night. The following morning it eased a little. The rain drops were smaller and softer. More like mist than rain.

The slate tiles of the coach house roof I can see from my office window were dark with the wet.

It’s tempting to complain about the rain, and praise the sunshine. But they are each beautiful in their own way. Someone was decorating our shrine room on those wet mornings. It wasn’t ideal conditions, the light was dim, and the paint took longer to dry, but the garden loved the rain.

The potato plants doubled in size in a couple of days, and the cucumber seedling I planted out on my day off grew taller by an inch a day.

The summer colours were dulled a little by the

mist, but still the deep pink magnolia flowers burst from the grey.

If we can just find the right place to stand, all weather is beautiful weather. And all weather changes. The same is true of our own lives.

There are large changes that a life goes through, and we might have some sense of what they are: of how the energy of a life shifts from childhood, through the teenage years to adulthood and old age. Having some sense of this can bring us a kind of solace, we can make peace with knowing that one thing changes into another. But we shouldn’t hold on too tightly to this idea of cycles.

Just like the weather there can be unexpected storms in the summer, or days of sunshine in the winter.

Thoughts, feelings, our physical health, all of these change over the years, and all of these change on a daily basis, and all of these change from moment to moment.

The simple act of knowing this can bring us to a calm centre point.

We can’t control many, if any, of these circumstances. But, like the weather, we can change how we look at them, and how we experience them.

In every circumstance there is something beautiful, and every circumstance is always beginning to change into something new.

green fingers Down at Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget Evans is reflecting on the recent Spring Garden Festival at The Three Counties Showground.

The show was a great success this year with the glorious weather enticing thousands of enthusiastic gardeners outside. It is always rewarding to meet so many people of all ages and backgrounds who have a passion for plants and growing. There is no doubting the pleasure that gardening brings to people.

Landshare is a Facebook group, which connects people who want to grow with those who have land to share. It began seven years ago with backing from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall as our passion for home-grown food was rediscovered.

The power of the internet and social media is apparent everywhere, including gardening, and it is exciting to see gardeners young and old finding a way to share information and grow plants in all sorts of places.

Summer is here and it’s time to enjoy our gardens in all their glory. Before you put your feet up, here’s a few things that need doing over the next couple of months:

• Prune Spring shrubs back after flowering.

• Trim evergreen hedges such as conifers, use secateurs on broad-leaved species to avoid cuts to individual leaves.

• Dead-head roses.

• Spray aphids with a soap-based or plant oil-based insecticide (one place to buy these is www.greengardener.co.uk ) Kitchen garden

• Sow chard and perennial spinach for crops well into next Spring.

• Long term crops such as brassicas may be mulched, ideally after rain to lock in moisture and add nutrients.

ledbury heritage centre There are signs of the building’s history everywhere, from children’s names scratched into the glass and timbers to old tokens and coins discovered during restoration. Standing at the top of Church Lane, Ledbury Heritage Centre is a living reminder of the town’s long history.

P

eople feel passionately about this building and it’s an important part of the town’s visitor experience’ says Sally Holliday who helps to manage the centre. ‘When people come in, they often say ‘We had no idea there was so much in Ledbury, we’ll definitely be back!’

If you think about it, tourism is such an important part of the town’s economy and we are supporting that work.’

‘This building was lived in until the 1960s’ continues Sally, ‘and one of our volunteers remembers visiting her grandmother here. I love to show school children around, pointing out where the outside toilet would have been.’

Last year 25,000 paid a visit to the centre and in just a few minutes on a quiet Monday morning around ten tourists have arrived, browsing the many exhibits and soaking up the medieval atmosphere.

The building remains open thanks to a team of around forty volunteers who staff it seven days a week. ‘We always welcome new volunteers’ says Sally, ‘and you receive a full induction when you begin. It’s a chance to do your bit for the community and work in an amazing place!’

Dating of the timbers show it was built in the 1480s and was possibly used by merchants in the wool trade. Later on it became a school before conversion into homes for five families.

At one end you can duck under a low beam and gaze straight up a huge chimney. Elsewhere in the building, a gap in the ground shows where an old stream bed ran under the street itself.

Recipe

meringues Pre-heat the oven to 110 Celsius (fan 100c) and line two baking trays with baking parchment.

In a clean, dry bowl (preferably not plastic) whisk the egg whites until very stiff – the whites should stand in peaks and not flop when the beaters are lifted out. Then add the caster sugar a tablespoon at a time, whisking after each addition until the mixture becomes very thick and shiny. Scoop up a heaped dessert spoonful of the mixture and drop it in rough rounds onto the baking parchment.

Bake for 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hours in a fan oven, or 1 1/4 hours in a conventional or gas oven until the meringues sound crisp when tapped underneath and are a pale coffee colour. I usually look in the oven after about an hour and if they are dry and crisp on the outside I just turn the oven off and leave them in overnight or until oven is

completely cold. They will keep in an airtight tin for up to 2 weeks.

The Caucasian Chalk Circle

by Bertolt Brecht In a mythical, war torn city, the Governor’s wife leaves her baby behind as she flees arrest. A naive young serving girl rescues him and is left, literally, holding the royal baby, loving him as her son. Later, when the war is over, the real mother returns to claim him. Only a drunken village clerk, appointed accidently as Chief Justice, and the serving girl’s own ill-educated tongue can save the child. Will it be enough?

This is described as Brecht’s most cheerful and charming play, and, unusually for Brecht, the play has a happy ending. Several plots run through it, all merging at the conclusion. The style swings chaotically from high drama to low farce, from pathos to satire, from the intimate to the epic.

German playwright Bertolt Brecht was a revolutionary of the Second World War era who changed modern thinking towards theatre. He wrote The Caucasian Chalk Circle whilst in exile

in America, allegedly, in answer to the problem of reconstructing Europe after Hitler. The play contains big themes – conflict and the strength of love and human feeling – that are as relevant today, as they were in 1945.

The Colwall Players recently ran a highly successful series of workshops where members and non-members, old hands and complete newcomers joined together to learn more about theatre techniques, both on stage and back stage. Many of those workshop participants will contribute to this and future productions. Do look out for more opportunities from the Players to join the world of theatre.

Ledbury food celebration This popular annual event once again brings local and artisan food and drink producers to Ledbury.

‘It’s a special day for both the town and visitors to enjoy’, says Griff Holliday from Ledbury Food Group which organises the event in conjunction with Ledbury Poetry Festival.

Visitors to the event can purchase a wide range of local food and drink to enjoy straight away or to take home and listen to live music and poetry while soaking up the celebratory atmosphere.

‘It’s a wonderful opportunity to bring families and the community together and celebrate everything good in the locality’ according to Phillipa Slinger of Ledbury Poetry Festival. ‘Last year we had a crowd pleasing array of poets and musicians providing hilarious and uplifting entertainment, and we have a fabulous line-up for 2016, our 20th anniversary celebratory year.’

A programme of music and poetry will run from 12 noon to 6pm on Sunday 10th July, featuring Poets “Irreverent and funny” Clare Bold, “Devastatingly

effective” Nico Reznick, “Rising star” Steve Pottinger, and “wonderfully bizarre” Rob Barratt.

Musicians appearing are Dan James, Fiddlers Two, Short Stuff, and A Month of Sundays. A special treat last year, Clapper Box will entertain with their fascinating mobile puppet theatre.

Local beers and ciders will be available to enjoy on site, together with a great range of local foods from freshly picked cherries through Polish pierogis, wraps, scotch eggs, cheese, preserves, to the best in local ice cream.
