Organ restoration project Despite dating back to Victorian times, the organ at St James’ Church in West Malvern still manages to impress. From soft, soothing notes to loud blasts and deep rumbles, it’s capable of producing awe-inspiring and captivating music.

After two previous overhauls in its 130 year life, a third is now necessary, and so a series of fun events this spring and summer are raising money to fund the renewal of the instrument’s electrics.

Although congregation numbers have fallen in the decades since the church was built, it still fills up at key times in the life of the community, whether it’s for a wedding or Christmas services.

‘It’s at those moments when the organ really matters’ says John Raine, organist at the church.

After ducking through a low door, squeezing through a narrow gap and ascending a ladder, we’re standing among the 1,500 or so pipes which create the instrument’s impressive and varied sounds. There are cylindrical-shaped metal pipes and box-shaped wooden ones; some up to 16 feet tall, others as small and slim as pencils, as well as a baffling array of tubes and wiring.

‘The instrument, built in the 1880s by local organ building company Nicholson’s of Worcester, originally had no electrical components, and there are one or two older residents here in West Malvern who remember having to pump the bellows by hand during services!’, says John.

All that changed in 1958 when the organ was extensively modernised with a new console provided, the installation of an all-electrical action linking the keyboards and pedalboard with the windchests and pipes and an electric blower added to feed the bellows. In 2007 the pipework and windchests, parts of which had warped and become unreliable, were overhauled and cleaned, with new stops added, including a lovely bright-sounding trumpet. The 1958 electrics, however, were largely untouched at the time as they were considered to have a few more years’ service in them.

However, eight years on, the delicate wiring has been showing its age with electrical shorting and other such problems increasingly occurring. So it has been decided to replace all the old electrical contacts and circuits with a state-of-the-art custom-built solid-state system. £24,000 is needed for the work. ‘Raising such a large sum to repair the organ is a challenge for a small village church’ says John, ‘but the PCC (Parochial Church Council) accepted that the work needed doing, and once the money is raised, we can begin the work’. This will be overseen by organ builder Anthony Hall who led the previous overhaul eight years ago, and who has his home in West Malvern.

The fundraising includes sponsorship of various electrical components, a talk in the Village Hall, and a twelve hour music marathon held in May. There are further events coming up in June and July. ‘We hope to have enough money

by September to be able to commission the work’ says John, ‘and once it’s complete we will be inviting a world-class organist to play an inaugural recital to celebrate and mark the fundraising achievement.’

Malvern Civic Week 11-18 July Now in its fifth year, Malvern Civic Week promises ten days of events, walks and talks, music and competitions. It began four years ago as a way of bringing together the community, with emphasis on young people enjoying and celebrating the heritage of Malvern and beyond.

The title for Civic Week this year is ‘Malvern Today and its Vibrant Society’ - events will explore both contemporary and historic themes.

There are four keynote lectures given in the Forum by kind permission of Nic Lloyd including Michael St Maur Sheil taking about World War I, James Hervey-Bathurst on Eastnor Castle, Adam Hatton, design director of the new Jaguar XE car and author Paula Byrne who will talk about the life of Kathleen Kennedy, sister of US President John F. Kennedy.

One unique feature of the week is the visit of a children’s choir from Malvern’s twin town, Marianske Lazne; this is the first time that the thirty four strong choir have visited the UK and we are hoping that a choir and/or instrumentalists from Malvern can reciprocate in 2016.

‘Civic Week remains popular’ says Roger Sutton, Vice-President of the society. ‘Two months ago we surveyed our members and 95 percent were very much in favour of it continuing.’

With such a strong local heritage, there is an almost endless supply of subjects and guest speakers. ‘We’re pushing at an open door’ continues Roger, ‘ from the Hills and local wells to the many well-known characters who lived or visited here, there are lots of things on which we can focus. Another part of our history which should be better known are Malvern’s connections with the development of radar and later on with Qinetiq.’

Many people are involved in bringing the programme of events together, not only the executive members of the society, but also Malvern Theatres and Christ Church who host events at no cost.

‘The schools’ literary competition is one of the highlights for me’ says Katharine Barber, who co-ordinates events for Civic Week. ‘We’re keen to attract younger people to events and this year we’re holding a music day for primary school children when they will learn and then perform ‘Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo’.

Group event

Ledbury Community Choir Songs from the Great American Songbook Friday 17th and Saturday 18th July 7.30pm at Ledbury Rugby Club Ledbury Community Choir is a popular local musical group, putting on sellout shows throughout the year. Their summer concert takes place every year over a weekend in July, and last year they sang hits from many popular shows.

This year the title is ‘The Great American Songbook’ and the audience will be treated to some classic hits from across the decades.

Among the songs that will be performed are ‘Fly Me To The Moon’, ‘Love is a Many Splendoured Thing’ and ‘Jeepers Creepers’.

With around 100 members meeting every week at the Baptist Church, the choir has been rehearsing hard to make this an evening to remember. Their performances help to raise money and every year the choir supports the Ledbury Mayor’s chosen charity.

A fantastic amount of £2, 350 was collected at the choir’s 2014 Christmas Concert and was recently presented to Councillor Bob Barnes for the Royal British Legion and SSAFA (see the picture).

Members of the choir are pleased to be able to combine their love of singing with the opportunity to support a worthy cause.

The choir usually takes part in all the major events around Ledbury and this year will be performing at Ledbury Community Day on Saturday 6th June.

create space

Yesterday, at the end of a long, busy and stressful day, I took an hour to walk into town and sit in Priory Park. The sun was still strong and I sat on the grass, moving every twenty minutes or so as the shadow of a tree overtook me. I watched two girls riding their little pink bicycles and felt my body slowly, slowly relax.

As I relaxed, I gradually let go of the trials of the day. My thoughts drifted. I had a few ideas about what I’d like to do when I got back, and planned the rest of my week. A problem I’d been wrestling with suddenly untangled, and the solution became clear.

It’s all too easy to get caught up in the busyness of daily life. We often strongly resist making space, giving ourselves or others a long list of reasons of why it’s impossible to take time out. It takes determination to stop the world and get off every so often.

Sometimes we also avoid making space because we’re trying not to feel sad or angry or confused, and when we have time on our hands these feelings start rushing in. Keeping ourselves busy works for a while, but as time goes on we might reach a point where we can’t take any more and we get ill or feel emotionally overwhelmed.

Instead, we can very gradually begin to ‘make friends’ with our feelings, giving ourselves five minutes to feel sad before we get up and do the washing up, or writing about our anger every day for a week. If we can sit down with our feelings and (attempt to!) receive them calmly, they gradually lose their power and intensity and there is more space for other thoughts and feelings, including some of the nicer ones. Sometimes this feels impossible on your own – at these times it can be helpful to speak to a friend or to arrange some counselling.

When we make these spaces, we will receive relaxation, reflection, recuperation and fresh insights. We have a chance to learn from our past, and reflect on our next steps.

Are you ready to make some space? Here are a few ideas.

Find mini-spaces. Small spaces can make a big difference to our day. Find some ways of incorporating space into your daily routine – ideas include waking up ten minutes earlier and sitting quietly in the garden, writing in a journal for fifteen minutes a day, taking your tea to a different room in the house and sipping it slowly, taking three slow breaths at your computer, walking around the block or taking ten minutes to relax all your muscles one by one before you go to sleep.

Create occasional bigger spaces. Every so often we might want to make a bigger space for ourselves. Are you already protesting that there’s no way you could find the time, or that there would be no-one to look after the children or keep on top of all the work you have to do?

Think again. If you are determined you will find a way. Take an hour in a coffee shop with a novel, or an afternoon with a friend talking about your plans for the year, or a morning reflecting on your career so far and where you want to head next.

Write them in your diary, in pen!

You might want to give yourself a space right now, as soon as you’ve finished reading this article. Put it down, shut your eyes and take ten slow breaths. Notice any tension in your shoulders or elsewhere in your body. Let it go.

Create space.

West Fest Saturday 4th July From Noon until 10pm at West Malvern Playing Field Tickets: Adult £10, Under 18s £6, Under 5s Free, Family Ticket £20 www.west-fest.org.uk West Fest has become a firmy established event in West Malvern, and every year it promotes, encourages and showcases musicians, artists, craftspeople and performers from the local community.

Music acts will play across three stages this year, while there will be craft stalls to browse as well as food and drink on sale. The whole event is designed to be family friendly and there are always actitivites for children. In previous years there have been games, storytelling, craft activities and face painting as well as bouncy castles galore!

2015 Organised by a group of volunteers, with a lot of the resources donated, the festival raises thousands of pounds that is used to support local organisations.

Malvern Bike Revival If you own a bike, but haven’t used it for a long time, then The Big Bike Revival is for you! There are all kinds of free events taking place in Malvern, including roadside repairs, easy bike rides and coaching. It’s being organised by Nick and Tanya Trotman from Malvern Cycles C.I.C. who have given us their top reasons for getting back on your bike.

Everything around town is actually close together and many routes are far flatter than you might realise. It’s easy to get around on a bike, and if you don’t believe me then pop into our cafe at the shop and I’ll show you on a map!

www.cavesfolly.com 01684 540631 Herbs have been used by mankind for thousands of years. They help heal us through natural medicine, spice up our food in cooking and much to the delight of archaeologists were used to embalm the dead and preserve important clues to the way our ancestors lived.

If you have a sunny, well drained spot in a border or container here are a few useful herbs to have on hand.

Common Thyme is an evergreen plant and a useful perennial herb for all year round picking.

Use it in stews, marinades and dressings. Lemon Thyme can be used in fruit punches and is very good for deterring ants!

Sage can be grown in a border to attract bees with its blue flowers in the summer. Purple leaved and variegated sage all taste the same but add an extra bit of foliage colour to the garden. Use in stews, marinades or rub the leaves on your teeth to shine them up a bit!

Rosemary is a useful shrub for any garden, providing evergreen foliage and beautiful blue flowers in the spring and autumn. The plant can be pruned and the stems used as barbecue skewers with the foliage used in stews, marinades and oils.

Oregano is another plant that ticks all the boxes.

The plant is covered in pink flowers all summer and attracts butterflies and bees. Fresh oregano leaves are delicious in tomato sauces, dressings, pasta, pizza and in salads.

Mint is a very invigorating herb. There are lots of different flavour mints available. The smell is refreshing and the fresh leaves used in tea are good for the digestion. Use it also in cordials, salads, jellies, dressings and with fruit in deserts.

Chives are an easy plant to grow and harvest.

The leaves spice up any dip or salad and have a mild onion flavour.

Annual herbs Basil This tender Mediterranean herb has a distinctive taste that is evocative of summer. Grow the plants from seed in spring and do not plant out until late May. Basil prefers hot conditions so if you have a greenhouse grow it inside with a bit of shade.

Parsley Sow parsley twice a year for a continuous crop, in early spring and mid to late summer. An old friend of mine used to swear by his parsley wine (it tasted rather like sherry) and said it was good for his kidneys. Probably not so good for his liver!

Dill The seeds can be sown in spring and again in mid-summer. Use the young shoots for dressings and marinades, especially with fish.

Coriander Sow at regular monthly intervals throughout summer to provide a continuous crop of leaves.

Harvest regularly to prevent bolting.

Newent Plant Centre Newent Plant Centre is full of early summer colour, with a fantastic assortment of plants and flowers. It’s been a busy few months for Kate Clowes and Mark Moir who recently moved their business from Gloucestershire to its new home near Ledbury on the A438 towards Hereford.

‘Moving here was a lot of work but we’re so happy with the way it looks now’ says Kate. ‘We were at our last site in Newent for six years and built up many loyal customers in that time. They have been absolutely fantastic during the move, even bringing us cups of tea and cake which gave us a welcome break from the hard work!’

‘We grow a lot of plants ourselves and also use local specialist growers from Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire’ says Mark.

‘We have more outdoor space here, the paths are wide and flat which allow access for people with mobility difficulties.’

Away from the paths, visitors can wander through gravel areas with the plants laid out giving a sense of exploring and discovering new plants.

‘We are a growing plant centre with an emphasis on organic and rustic plants’ says Kate. ‘There is none of the additional hard-sell you might find at some garden centres as we like to concentrate on giving the customer a great range of plants to choose from with year-round interest.’

Music Festivals Mappfest Saturday 20th June from Midday until 10pm Sunday 21st June from Midday until 6pm at Link Top Common, Malvern Free Entry: donations collected for charity www.mappfest.com Mappfest is now in its sixth year and over a weekend in June, forty bands will play on three stages set up around Link Top Common in Malvern.

This is a completely free event which this year will raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association and for Acorn's Children's Hospice.

Previous events have already raised thousands of pounds for good causes and last year's event raised just over ÂŁ3,200 for Acorn's.

Ledbury Community Day SOME GROUPS AT A GLANCE

Saturday 6th June From 9.30am to 4pm at various locations around Ledbury Now in its third year, Ledbury Community Day takes place this year on the first Saturday in June.

It’s a chance to learn about the many different activities that go on in and around the town.

Last year 65 organisations took part with everything from choirs to music, martial arts and voluntary groups. ‘All the venues were buzzing with people’ says Griff Holliday who helps organise the event, ‘not least the British Legion with the Old Ledbury photo show.’

The event began in 2013 when a huge ox roast was held in the centre of town to mark the Queen’s Coronation fifty years previously.

‘People and groups find it a useful way to recruit new members’ says Paul Kinnaird, Community Day Chairman. ‘Whether that’s volunteers or people to take part in activities, it’s a great way to spread the word.’

This year more than seventy groups are taking part and include local schools, fitness groups, heritage organisations, charities, in fact, practically every activity you can think of! For the first time this year, a number of events will take place in the newly re-opened Master’s House.

Poor weather doesn’t stop the day taking place as wet weather alternative venues are already arranged. ‘Last year we moved a lot of activity into the Community Hall’ says Griff, ‘all the school groups were performing and it sounded just amazing!’

Community Day is also a chance to visit some of Ledbury’s fine historic buildings including the Master’s House, St Katherine’s Hall, The Heritage Centre, The Butcher Row House and the Church.

HERITAGE – Old Ledbury is a website featuring hundreds of vintage photos and memories of the town in days gone by.

GARDENING – Ledbury Allotment Association is a not for profit group that aims to support and enrich the local community.

As well as managing allotment plots they also run the ‘Sow and Grow’ project around the town. You can find them in Burgage Hall between 10am and 2pm on Community Day..

Community Action Ledbury Community Action Ledbury has a selection of mobility aids that people can use for a small donation. There’s a selection of wheelchairs, mobility scooters and walking frames. Many of these were purchased after local businesses and people kindly came to the rescue and generously donated the funds so some of the former tired stock could be replaced.

These can be booked by the day, week, or even longer if needed. This can be particularly handy if you are recovering from an operation or broken bone. Visitors to Ledbury can also use the service, so they too can enjoy being able to get around the lovely streets of Ledbury.

Recipe

Nest Shortbread Preheat oven to 140°C Grease and line a baking tray

Ingredients This recipe was kindly provided by Neil from The Nest near Ledbury, a Family Friendly Deli Cafe serving local and Artisan produce.

You can find The Nest on the Hereford Road, a few miles outside Ledbury.

225g Butter 100g Caster Sugar 100g Ground Rice 225g Plain Flour

1. Cut the cold butter into cubes and rub into the flour until it resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Add the ground rice and sugar and bring the mixture together.

2. Using your hands, roughly spread the mixture out in a 20 x 30 x 4cm baking tray cover with cling film and use a knife to smooth the surface until there are no wrinkles (it should be completely smooth and even).

3. Place in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before baking.

4. Heat the oven to 140 degrees, remove cling film and then prick the surface with a fork and bake for 20/30 minutes until its pale and golden.

5. Remove from oven and sprinkle with caster sugar leave to cool for a few minutes and then mark into slices.

6. Shortbread will keep in an air tight container for up to 1 week.

We serve shortbread triangles with whipped cream and fresh Herefordshire strawberries to a great response.

A New Portrait Despite reaching the age of 81, the renowned portrait artist Michael Noakes shows no signs of slowing down.

Michael, who lives in Malvern, recently received three new commissions and in April his portrait of the actor Sir Donald Sinden went on display at The Royal Society of Portrait Painters in London.

‘Donald was an old friend of ours’ says Michael.

‘We had first talked of a portrait decades ago, and he came to our home here before I started on the picture. I would never have put, behind an ordinary man, the livid background that is in this portrait: but it echoed the stage-lighting during a one-man show we once saw him giving here in Malvern.’

Michael has painted numerous actors, politicians and royalty, including the Queen, Margaret Thatcher and Sir Alec Guinness. After a career that stretches across decades, his work remains as much in demand as ever.

The Marriage of Figaro Mozart’s joyous The Marriage of Figaro combines great tunes, laugh-out-loud comedy and powerful insights into what it is to be human, so it’s little wonder that it is one of the world’s best-loved operas.

On the day they are due to be married, Susanna horrifies Figaro by revealing that the unwanted attentions of his boss – the womanising Count – are becoming increasingly insistent. Further complications are caused by highly-sexed teenager Cherubino’s infatuation with the Countess, who loves her unfaithful husband but is flattered to be noticed by a much younger man. Through quick thinking and subterfuge, the servants outwit the master and the women get the better of the men in a satirical romp that is joyful and subversive in equal measure.

OperaUpClose’s mission is to make opera more democratic, and to show just what an exciting, theatrical, accessible artform it can be. The company was founded in 2009 and has since developed a reputation for intimate, surprising stagings which demand detailed, truthful acting from the singers without compromising on musical standards, with razor-sharp new English translations and inventive orchestrations.
