Meeting the costs of long-term care By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall As a society we are living longer, and it is becoming more common to require residential care in our old age. It is estimated that 130,000 new individuals enter care homes each year. The cost of care is typically around £26,000 per year, but could easily be higher, depending on the level of care required and the quality of the home. Meeting the cost of care home fees can seem like a daunting prospect. Many people face this issue for the first time when a relative needs to go into a home. It can then become urgent to get clear, reliable information and unbiased advice in order to take whatever action is in the best interest of your loved ones. What is imperative is that you speak to an independent financial adviser who is both qualified and specialises in this very crucial area of advice. Smith Weale Associates meets those criteria.

For those clients who wish to choose the care home in which they reside, that cost may well be more (and often is) than the government is willing to fund. Those concerns have been heightened of late, not least because the political debate around who should pick up the care bill remains unresolved. Various ideas being suggested including limiting an individual’s costs to £30,000 or that any bill can be settled upon one’s death, but frankly, until there is a cost effective plan in place, the cost will continue to be borne by oneself and family.
There are several options available for funding the costs of care and each should be explored and explained to help you through the pros and cons. It is also important you fully understand any entitlements that you may be able to claim including state support and benefits.

Bob’s Daily Notes One man’s love of rambling walks around the hills and days spent in the garden has been brought to life on the internet by his son.
When Bob Knight retired to Colwall he busied himself in a routine of long walks and hours spent gardening. Autumn was a time for harvesting fruit and vegetables from the garden, heading out to search for fungus and preparing the garden for the year ahead. After moving to Colwall in the mid-1980s, Bob spent the following seventeen years meticulously recording the details of his daily routine.‘I didn’t realise he took so many notes’ says his son David, ‘although I had read his war diary I didn’t realise the habit extended into his everyday life.’
@bobsdailynotes - 5 Oct 1987: Walked to Brockhill Farm to order manure, picked a few mushrooms on the way Although he couldn’t have realised it at the time, Bob’s notes suit the style of Twitter. The internet site allows users to write short text messages which can be read by people all over the world. Bob’s son David spotted the similarity, and began his own daily routine of publishing the notes on the website. ‘I decided to start in February of this year as I realised it had been a year since he died, and it felt the right way to mark the

anniversary. I also started because it makes me read his dairies every day which I otherwise wouldn’t do!’
@bobsdailynotes - 10 Oct 1985: Fine, sunny. Continued double-digging and composting. Set daffodil bulbs in front garden A lot of the daily notes include what might be considered run-of-the-mill information. On 8th October 1992 the bean plants were pulled up and the veg patch was dug over while on 10th October 1995 the daffodil bulbs went in. ‘I’ve learned from his notes what is in season and what I should be doing in the garden and when!’ laughs David. ‘I think he might have used it in the same way, ‘I dug this time last year so it’s time to do it again.’
@bobsdailynotes - 3 Oct 1986: Picked blackberries on Raggedstone for Harvest Festival Walks around the hills would invariably yield a few apples, blackberries or field mushrooms. ‘He was always out picking blackberries and mushrooms when I was a child growing up in Leicestershire and reading the diary entries brought it all back.’ Perhaps growing up in more austere times formed the basis for Bob’s growing and gathering of food, perhaps it was simply for the joy of gardening and foraging. Whatever, the principles of eating in season and organically are growing in popularity once again. Although
the number of people actively following the daily notes on Twitter is low, its gained a great deal more interest from those in the green movement as well as people more generally interested in a self-sufficient lifestyle.
@bobsdailynotes - 30 Sep 1985: Walked on hills - Dingle, Sugarloaf, End Hill, round North Hill & back to West of England car park Bob fought in the Second World War and part of his training brought him to Malvern. ‘He was always extolling the beauty of the place’ says David. Later on he was part of a regiment that fought its way through North Africa, he fought at Monte Cassino in Italy and eventually reached Rome. His actions saw him awarded a medal for bravery. ‘After that he said he never wanted to go abroad again’ says David. ‘After retirement he was happy to spend his days exploring the area around the village, he was never happier than when in his garden or out on the hills.’
@bobsdailynotes - 25 Aug 1986: Pouring wet, windy day. 2” rain around this time. Hurricane Charley Wet summer weather is nothing new in Colwall. Reading the notes it becomes clear that while the world has moved on, in many ways village life remains the same. ‘I’ve had a fair bit of reaction
to the tweets’ says David, ‘which has grown as people re-tweet the entries. I used to speak to my dad every two or three weeks on the phone, but he wasn’t always a great talker. Reading through his diaries has given me a much better idea of his life, showing what he got up to and the places he visited. The breadth of what has come out has been amazing for me, I’m discovering more about him now than I thought possible.’

Green Fingers ‘Organic’ is a trendy word today, but to me it is the basis of essential Soil Association principals which I adhere to every day at Caves Folly Nurseries. I am not a tree hugging hippie (well only sometimes) but an experienced grower with a passionate desire to grow without the use of chemicals which harm the environment. I have been growing organically for over 25 years and have watched with delight the build up of flora and fauna on my modest patch of land. Trying to be an environmentally friendly gardener is so complicated when you start analysing the ‘whole’ picture, that it is easier to think of how you as an individual can contribute in a small way.
What you can do Plant to attract pollinating insects,create a wild area in your garden. Always compost plant material and put back into the soil - don’t take it to the tip! Never use slug pellets or pesticides and try to use organic fertilizers. There are many positive reasons for choosing to grow organically. Organic farming takes better care of the environment, reducing the pollution and greenhouse gases released from food production by restricting the use of artificial chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Organic farms are havens for wildlife providing homes for bees,

Christmas Lights The festive season starts later this month with the Christmas Lights switch-on in Ledbury and Malvern. Read on for all the details!
Which switch on is first? Ledbury’s lights are the first to be officially switched on, with an afternoon of fun in the town on Saturday 24th November. The entertainment begins at 12.45pm on the High Street. Father Christmas arrives at 1pm and you can visit him at the Town Council Offices on Church Street. There will also be face painting, balloon modelling and juggling as well as a tombola and a prize draw. The main event of the day, the lights switch on, will take place at 5.30pm.
When is the lights switch-on in Malvern?
And how can we pass on our Christmas presents lists to Father Christmas? The Christmas Victorian Post Box, kindly loaned by the Great Malvern Royal Mail Delivery Office, will be placed as usual inside the Malvern Tourist Information Centre, after Monday November 12th. Children can post their letters to Father Christmas with a special £1 stamp. Last year £178 was raised for Acorn’s Children’s Hospice (the final date for posting letters will be Friday 14th December).
It’s Malvern’s turn the following week, on Saturday 1st December. The event runs all day and includes local bands, orchestras, choirs, street entertainers and stilt walkers. There will be a parade, an arts market, a food and drink market as well as other stalls. The town’s Christmas lights will be officially switched on at 6pm by children’s tv presenter Emma Nowell who is playing Cinderella in the pantomime at Malvern Theatres. There will also be Jamie Rickers from GMTV’s children’s Toonattik show, who is playing Buttons in the panto. As in previous years, hundreds of people are expected to come into the centre of Malvern to enjoy the day and evening.

The Re-entrants At the beginning of the month award winning five piece ensemble (violin, cello, piano, oboe, viola) Fordante return to Ledbury performing a mix of popular movie classics together with some of their own melodic crossover classical and world music. Then out of the embers of The Big Blues Tribe rises a new six piece musical pheonix Stomp And Holler – that explodes onto stage with brass and blues reminiscent of the floor filling music of New Orleans, together with a vast array of voices. As a complete contrast we have two short plays that were part of the Herefordshire Write On Festival. In The Visitors Bill tells the story of how PM 1 and PM 2 (aka Nick and Dave) come to take tea with him and his wife in their East London home. Pull the Other One is a lighthearted portrayal of life in a hospital. At the end of the month Hotbuckle Theatre Company from Surrey bring their innovative style and unique talent to Victor Hugo’s remarkable novel, Les Miserables - one of the most powerful and celebrated works of European literature. Then in early December we have driving folkbased music from Eastern Europe inspired by the music of European gypsies from The Budapest Café Orchestra. And in January LADS presents its Legendary and Fantastic Panto Puss in Boots. Tickets have been held at last year’s price of £8 for adults and £4 for children.

Teddy Bear Day at blue-ginger gallery Teddy bears and their owners will be welcomed to blue-ginger all day on Sunday 18 November, and all those arriving with a bear will be presented with a complimentary chocolate brownie! There will be a bear corner where visiting bears can sit and chat together while their owners shop. Last year on our Teddy Bear Day we welcomed a very ancient bear who arrived tucked up in a shoe box, and was soon surrounded by bears of all ages. We think they enjoyed the chance of a ‘social’. So this year we’ve decided that as the blue-ginger event coincides with Children in Need, we’ll have a bear themed tombola to raise money for the charity. Malvern teddy bear maker Janis Waldron will be demonstrating the art of bear making, and she has created some bear and bunny
kits that will make excellent Christmas gifts. There will be some bearthemed artwork and gingerbread and chocolate bears on the menu. And throughout the day our resident storyteller, Dave, will be reading from his favourite bear stories and poems. The bears are getting so excited!
