Each year I know Autumn has arrived when I get adverts with Christmas pictures and products, notices for Christmas Fairs, fireworks and the Light Switch On. Part of me loves this time of year, but the gardener in me knows it is still a long time until Spring. So I prepare my greenhouse, garden and allotment for Winter, plant winter flowers, spring bulbs and harvest the autumn vegetables. Green Fingers this month gives some tips on winter preparation, and an article by the Orchard Group explains how to source trees and soft fruit canes. It is all in the preparation! To further enjoy this time of year you can visit the firework display in Colwall on 5th November. It promises to be a great evening.

wanted to be. There’s so much creativity here and lots to say about the Malvern hills. We’re keeping the podcasts to about ten minutes, short enough to listen to and the download is free. You can listen via our website or download via i-Tunes, if you subscribe to them (again for free), they’ll be downloaded automatically.

Paddy O’Dooley, Violin Maker

Monty Funk is a small radio production company based in West Malvern. As well as making programmes for the BBC, the company also creates podcasts; mini programmes that can be downloaded and listened to on a computer or an MP3 player.

They’ve recently started to create podcasts about local artists and craftsmen. Peter Nash from Monty Funk tells us more.

As well as our programme making for the BBC and the independent sector, we create a lot of ‘high level’ audio tours for different clients. We’re involved, or have been involved in several really interesting projects, including tours of historic towns and cities, and we’re currently busy producing a podcast about the history of the designer of the Titanic.

Since my colleague Susanna Byers joined us, we’ve decided to make a website where you can find all our podcasts in one place. We also wanted to create themes for the material we’ve created; as we’re based in West Malvern we thought we’d start with stories of some of the many creative people who live here. This is partly oral history but its more advanced than that; these are crafted pieces and will remain as a permanent recording of the people who have lived here.

Ultimately we hope to find a way of making the podcasts pay for themselves, at the moment we’re funding it entirely and we’re not sure what the business model will be. We have twenty five programmes on there and more are being added all the time.

I’ve lived in the area for quite a few years. I moved here after my car broke down in Malvern, I spent the day looking around and decided this was where I

In his workshop, Paddy is busy putting the finishing touches to another instrument. ‘When somebody uses a saw you get a beautiful rhythm, it makes a lovely sound. I use Spruce for the front, you can see the lines of the grain are very close because it grows high in alpine mountains so it grows very slowly, and its very resonant. This part will be the back, its also symmetrical but with a higher neck and this will be the scroll.

When you’re making an instrument its got to be functional. I make them for specific people, I build an audio picture of what this person wants and then try to construct a physical object that will allow them to produce the sound they want. Its also got to be beautiful.

I was at an exhibition once and an American gentlemen was very interested in my work. He asked ‘Where’s your power tools?’ and I replied ‘There they are!’, waving my hands. He said ‘No come on, you can tell me’ and he just couldn’t believe it! They’re all hand tools and that’s all you need; a saw, a gouge and a scraper, you can make violins very simply.

I run an evening class in violin making, because there are such a shortage of opportunities to learn. I think its an obligation to pass my skills on’.

Podcasts Paul White, Editor of ‘Sound on Sound’ magazine, and collector of guitars ‘This one sounds quite bright and spiky’ says Paul as he strums on one of his many instruments. ‘There are twelve guitars in the studio, another dozen in here, then in the utility are another fourteen, a few more are at my daughter’s house and I have a few tucked under the bed, and more in the cases behind you!

There are a few I bought because I like playing them.

Others are ones I made, or rescued, or reassembled from parts I bought second-hand. I like doing it, my original career was electronics and I like tinkering, getting something more out of what is a basic piece of equipment.

I made the body of this one from swamp ash, a nice American wood used by Fender for a lot of their guitars. This is another one made from a piece of ash, I hollowed out a big chunk to minimise the weight. Making the body is the hard past, assembling the rest is an Paul afternoon’s work.

White I’m in a band. We first started playing in the seventies before we got proper jobs, and reconvened a few years later. We have a lot of fun playing in pubs and clubs, its done for fun, there’s no money in it these days, its more like therapy for the inmates of the band!’

Anthony Griffiths, known as ‘Griff’, Artist ‘I guess its in my blood to draw and paint, there’s nothing you can do about it, you either pick up a pencil and sketch and doodle, or you don’t , its something I have no choice with really. I do it because I can’t help it and I love it.

I do two different styles of painting. I do oils inspired cornily enough by nature, mainly sunsets as I’m in West Malvern and every time you see it go down

Anthony Griffiths its completely different. The sunsets are infinitely variable so they can never cease to give you something new.

The other thing I do is illustration, inspired by social comment, that’s satirical and mostly political.

It constantly changes, a lot seems to be inspired by the unfair things happening to people in other parts of the world. oppressive governments and regime change.

This picture is called Mad Mickey, its a comment about the Iraq war and the part we played in that.

This one is a pen and ink picture about having a bad memory. So its a picture of a bloke with a sieve instead of a head. Its called Sievehead and might have been loosely based on my own rubbish memory! This picture is called Dream Induced by Enforced Repetition. Its about a dream my dad had, he was a plasterer and dreamt he had to plaster an endless wall.

Its difficult to make your way as an artist, its very hard unless you get some small pockets of success that might lead to more success. You need a bit of luck really, keep plugging away and you can have a good year. I’ve had a couple of years where I’ve made a bit of money. I’d rather be doing this because I’m not an office kind of person’.

All About... ...Fireworks in Colwall One of Colwall’s biggest events of the year, the school’s Fireworks Display, takes place at the start of this month, Saturday 5th November. Josephine Gunning, chair of the Friends of the School tells us more.

How many people make this event happen?

This is a massive community event that involves village folk as well as a big chunk of people connected to the school. In all there are about eighty people working on the night and we’re fantastically well supported. As well as parents whose children attend the school, many other people help including parents who’s children left many years previously.

Our fireworks display brings the whole community together, this really is an event for the village and people from the surrounding area are most welcome to join us as well.

What happens on the night?

There are several family-friendly themes to the evening. We have the ‘Sparkler Zone’, a supervised area in which children can purchase and use sparklers before disposing of them safely. There’s the ‘Glow Zone’ where we sell glow sticks and other glow-in-the-dark items which makes the whole event look wonderful as the children run around with their glow stuff on! Our licensed bar sells Black Pear ale and Westons Cider – both made by local companies and competitively priced. There will be some delicious home-made soup and we have mulled wine. There’s also a barbecue selling hot-dogs and burgers, the meat provided by the local butcher Wallers.

What about bonfire night traditions?

Each class will be making a Guy for this year’s event, we’ll be asking people to donate at least a penny to their favourite one, with the winner decided by the amount of money collected. The children have chosen to recreate their sporting heroes this year, so as well as challenging their creative skills we hope it will encourage their love of sport.

And what about the fireworks themselves?

We have two fabulous firework displays during the evening. The first usually takes place at about 5.45pm, then after a suitable break for refreshments, the second display is slightly later on in the evening.

The fireworks are organised and set off by a dedicated team known as ‘The Pyromaniacs’, a group of villagers who start each display with their own unique ‘Torch Dance’ which marks the start of each display; make sure you look out for it. I should add that despite their title, the pyromaniacs follow strict safety guidelines and are quite safe!

Can we turn up & buy tickets on the night itself?

Yes, the gate opens at 5pm and a ticket costs £5 for adults and £2 per child, with pre-school children let in for free. We do sell quite a few tickets in advance with a discount for adults, these can be purchased from the School Office or from the café in Colwall. The event raises valuable funds which the Friends donate to the school for use throughout the year.

West Malvern Friends of Majani Mapana – launch event Friday 11th November This is the new name of our charity supporting the link set up between St James CE Primary School and Majani Mapana school in Tanzania.

Orchard Madness

By Tim Dixon Writing this as the last few days of a fantastic spell of autumn weather drift away I can see the first of the Redwings and Fieldfares arriving from Scandinavia to spend the winter in our orchards. Colwall Orchard Group volunteers meanwhile are taking a welldeserved rest after running five fundraising events in eight weeks.

I sometimes think that we have all been struck with some sort of collective insanity in deciding to buy Colwall Village Garden and plunging a tiny local charity into debt to the tune of £50,000.

Whenever any of us visit the garden however we know that although we may be mad we are also right!

The intrepid allotmenteers smile without fail, despite the vicissitudes of wireworms and drought; the bees in the community apiary are whizzing about with the promise of loads of honey next year and the fruit trees are lined up, heeled in on their starting blocks, ready to be planted in the community orchard in December.

Autumn is our busiest time and this year we have been running flat out since September with 2 brilliant fundraising concerts by the Spookymen’s Chorale and Andrew Duhon. Then the Colwall Village Garden Open Day complete with double rainbows; the Chase Inn Cider and Perry Festival (how could we not be at that!) and our Apple Day celebration at Colwall Cricket Club. Not to mention helping at the Malvern Autumn Show and delivering a keynote speech at the Celebration of Apples event at Hergest Croft sponsored by the Royal Horticultural Society.

The Orchard group beavers away outside Colwall as well. This autumn we have been giving advice to orchard owners around the area, generously funded by the Malvern Hills AONB.

We are running our fruit tree and soft fruit purchasing scheme again for orchard owners and householders in the area. The scheme gets more fruit trees planted; allows local people to buy trees at much reduced prices and generates a bit of income for the group.

Finally, as if all this wasn’t enough, we have made our first commercial runs of Colwall Apple Juice. Do buy it if you see it – it is simply delicious.

Colwall Orchard Group volunteers are easy to spot.

They have a weary tread and a haunted look as they dread the next call to arms for another mad fundraiser – did I mention the solar panels project?

When you see one give them a pat on the back and a chocolate biscuit – they deserve it.

Oh, and please put some money in their tin.

Green Fingers At Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget has some advice on growing fruit and veg.

During the Second World War `Growing your Own` was common, but the end of rationing and the birth of modern farming techniques saw this need fade away, as the cost of food fell. With today’s high cost of oil and increasing food prices its coming back into the lives of anyone who can find a spare plot of ground.

The benefits of growing food and flowers are not simply economic. There are environment benefits with fewer food miles, less packaging, limited pesticide use and better habitats for wildlife all making an impact. On a personal level the feel-good factor of being outside and seeing nature in action is wonderful. Its difficult to think about anything else while munching a juicy home-grown tomato! With so many pesticides, genetically modified crops, preservatives and worse things going into our foods it is a joy to eat food that’s provenance from seed to plate is fully known.

Many people I have spoken to who have just started growing vegetables have been disillusioned by this

season’s difficult growing conditions. When you have been growing food for over thirty years, as I have, you eventually get the hang of it! Don’t give up, remember that every season will be different.

Of course we can’t predict future seasons and tend to sow the same seeds each year, hoping for the same crop yields. The secret is not to `put all your carrots in one basket` but instead grow a wide variety of vegetables. I grow all my green vegetables and salads, while I buy in organic root vegetables, as I haven’t got time to grow everything.

Finally, if you have time to spare in the garden this month, now is the time to start adding rotted manure and compost to free draining soil, this will increase the water retention for next season.

After this season’s drought conditions, think about rainwater harvesting for next year. And don’t forget to get the thermals out of mothballs, you never know what December might bring!

By Fiona Robyn from Malvern Recently I set out on an eight mile walk from Colwall to Ledbury. There were eight of us in the group and we had sandwiches in our back-packs, ready for a day away from the hustle and bustle of our lives.

I’m not the fittest of people. I’m still getting used to walking from the bottom of Church Street to the top, it never gets any easier! Ahead of the eight mile ramble, I was more than a bit apprehensive! I needn’t have worried; we had a wonderful day. We passed through harvested fields, the cut stalks a beautiful pale green. We admired cottage gardens in glorious bloom along the country roads. We watched butterflies sipping at the flowers that lined our route.

We ate our lunch at the very top of Oyster Hill, with impressive panoramic views, following an exhausting climb.

I often feel happier and healthier after I’ve spent time outside. But our lives can get hectic, and we can forget to appreciate the beauty on our doorsteps.

We can forget how good it feels to have fresh air in our lungs, and how satisfying it can be to come home again to cake and tea after an invigorating walk through the drizzle!

How can we get better at spending more time outside in our beautiful countryside? Here are my tips to entice you out; • Think small. You might not have an hour to spare, but do you have ten minutes? Go into your garden and have a look at the plants, or go out and post that letter. If you only have five minutes, stand at the window and watch the shapes of the clouds.

• Phone a friend. Arrange to meet a friend or two for a walk on the hills or through the woods. Once you’re committed to a walk its harder to back out. In any case it can be enjoyable to share your outdoor experience with somebody else.

• Get creative. Take your camera with you (you might even have one on your phone) or take a notebook so you can sketch what you see or write some notes.

• Find a favourite spot – by a stream, or a bench with a beautiful view, and visit it regularly. Introduce it to your friends. Notice how it changes with the seasons.

• Come to your senses. Keep your ears open and see what birdsong you can hear. Smell the flowers.

Touch that silvery bark. See the blue of that harebell.

• Learn curiosity. Take your children or your dog (or borrow someone else’s!) and watch how they interact with the environment. Let some of their excitement rub off on you.

My legs were aching afterwards and I did get blisters on my feet, but I was also full of fresh air and memories.
