The actions of many different people make up the heart of any community, and in all sorts of ways. Its might be occasional help given to a neighbour, it might just be a friendly ‘hello’ exchanged as complete strangers pass each other in the road. In Cradley, Nigel and Helen Thomas have recently taken over the local store. Shops like this provide a vital service for many people, particularly when the nearest store is a few miles away. We wish them well in this vital function for the local community.

Jane Williams runs Home at Heart, a local giftware company, and next month will be involved with a brand new community event. She is one of many people gearing up for the 3 Villages Festival. Keep an eye out for her advert (page 8), and read all about this great new event in our main feature.

3 Villages Next month the villages of Cradley, Storridge and Mathon are putting on a special festival for the first time. With last minute preparations underway, the organisers hope it will become a regular event.

The village of Cradley is used to staging grand events. Four years ago they put on a large theatrical production, ‘The Crowns’, charting life in the village during the previous century. Next month The Three Villages Festival sees Cradley joining with Mathon and Storridge for a weekend of activities. ‘It’s certainly ambitious!’ says Peter Diamond who’s overseeing the festival. ‘We’ve chosen a theme linking all the events which is ‘Masquerade’. From Friday 24th June three days of events will be linked together by the use of masks. ’We’ve not done a festival of this size before, certainly never as big in ambition and scope as this, which is not really surprising as it takes a lot of time and effort. It’s not just a case of putting a few tables out!’

Already a hundred people have volunteered their time and their skills to help make the weekend a success. Some offered financial support to make sure the venture got off the ground in the first place.

‘One of our sponsors, a local man, was keen that we joined our three communities together and that’s an ambition we’ve kept in all of our planning’ , adds Peter.

Some of the creative highlights include a dramatic performance called ‘Mystery and Merriment’, written

by Peter Diamond and originally staged in Worcester Cathedral more than 25 years ago. It’s been reworked and with the help of a professional musician and a choreographer will take place at the church in Cradley over several successive nights.

Students from schools and colleges in Worcester and Hereford are helping to create what is perhaps the weekend’s grandest spectacle. A masked costume parade on two afternoons will wind its way through the village accompanied by a samba band and morris dancing. A street market will complement the entertainments and Peter promises ‘proper quality’ food, drink and crafts. A mini-showground will play host to maypole dancing and other activities. A selection of local gardens will be thrown open for viewing, while guided trails will take walkers through the local countryside between Cradley, Storridge and Mathon, stopping for cream teas and refreshments along the way.

Its not just about fun. Money raised from the weekend will be donated to community groups in the area. There’s also a hope that working together over one weekend will bring greater social cohesion to the villages; not that it’s exactly lacking. ‘’We’re extremely fortunate in this part of the world to have such a community’ says Peter, ‘and if things turn out well next month, we hope the Three Villages Festival will become an annual event’.

Proceeds benefit NGS Charities. £4pp, children free Nestled under the Worcestershire Beacon,this stunning garden is open in 2011 under the National Gardens Scheme and is well worth a visit.This tranquil garden has been created gradually by owners Deirdre and Phil Drake over the past 11 years. The owners have been developing the garden at Model Farm working with the the natural contours of the land to create features including a stream bed, several ponds and a bog garden. Rather than drawing out a plan, they have encouraged the garden to evolve into a beautiful, peaceful place.

The two acres spread up and to the back of the timbered Victorian house, with the boundary fringed by ancient oaks and an array of specimen trees.The land falls naturally from a rediscovered shady upper Victorian pond through a series of planted borders to a large plateau and a meandering stream bed to a fish pond resplendent with lilies below.

There is a flourishing mixed orchard, a meadow area and a well stocked fruit garden producing a bounty of berries from midsummer onwards. The bog garden, ponds and a trickling stream have provided an excellent habitat for bank voles. There are 20 different acers and over 60 trees , many of which are original Bonsai specimens, now free to reach their natural splendour.

The trees include a Forest Pansy, Liquidambar,

Copper Beech, Cedar Atlantica, Deodara, Dawn Redwood and various Japanese specimens. The 70 foot pergola was built by Mr. Drake and looks spectacular clothed in clematis, wisteria and roses.

They have hand-built a stone bridge, walls and semi-circular steps, using many tonnes of stone dug up from the garden.They have hand-made all the features and do all the gardening themselves.The property was originally Lady de Walden's home farm, which supplied the Manor- which stretched 260 acres through to Herefordshire - with meat, eggs, milk and produce.

Now Model Farm has two acres nestled under the Worcestershire Beacon and has stunning views towards Hay Bluff and the Welsh Black Mountains.

There is no traffic - only birdsong and sounds of the countryside can be heard.

Do come and enjoy a wonderful afternoon visit.

Hill Adders

By Helen Stace Last month, our local snake expert, Nigel Hand, was in all the papers and on TV and the radio. He is working with Natural England, the Zoological Society of London and The Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust to assess the size and health of adder populations across England. So, I thought I would ask Nigel for the latest update on adders in the Malvern Hills.

In central England, there are significant populations in the Wyre Forest, Cannock Chase, the Forest of Dean and Mortimer Forest. Adders are very distinctive snakes with the black zig zag markings along their backs. In fact, each has unique markings on the back of their heads, so Nigel can identify individual adders on the Malverns from his photo gallery, built up over years of study. Nigel thinks there are 9 main adder populations on the Malverns, the largest of these with only 15 – 25 adults.

The adders live in areas of rough grassland and low scrub with scattered groups of trees where they can hunt for their prey - voles, lizards and amphibians.

This habitat mosaic also provides the cover the adders need, particularly for their winter hibernation.

They are cold blooded animals, so they need open sunny patches, close to cover, where they can warm up in the mornings – areas of dead bracken fronds in patches of bramble are ideal for this. The adders are shy and will slip off quickly if disturbed, so they rarely bite people or dogs. They favour the quieter areas away from urban encroachment, public access and busy roads. farmland can act as a barrier to the movement of these snakes and isolate their populations.

As described last month, natural succession on the hill means that the grassland, bracken and scrub habitats are being colonised by secondary woodland, which is not suitable for adders. So, we hope that the grazing management, scrub control and tree clearance will help adders to survive on the hills. The national study Nigel is doing will throw more light on the genetic diversity of adder populations and should help us work out how better to conserve the species.

In the meantime, you should consider yourself very lucky if you spot an adder.

By cutting out wheat from your diet

The stomach and digestive organs are the hub of the body, where life-giving nutrients are absorbed before waste is transferred into the bowels that rids the body of toxins. One of the most common problems I experience as a nutritionist is bloating. It causes discomfort and pain to many people. Bloating is defined as a general swelling or feeling of tightness in the abdominal area. Clients often describe it as feeling ‘very full’ after eating, even after only small amounts. It is usually accompanied by abdominal distension and, embarrassingly, an over-production of gas, which is naturally produced in the body and not normally a problem.

In some cases the bloating may be a symptom of an underlying health problem such as irritable bowel syndrome, a gut condition that can cause severe gastric upset. Others may have a food intolerance and its often wheat. Wheat intolerance is remarkably common but difficult to identify. Classical food allergies are characterized by an extreme, immediate reaction to a particular food and are relatively rare, affecting less than one person in 50, but food intolerances are far more common. According to the British Allergy Foundation (BAF), 45 per cent of us will develop one at some time in our lives. A food intolerance - or sensitivity - is chronic rather than acute.

So how does cutting out wheat help improve digestion?

Eating foods we are intolerant to affects our ability to digest foods properly and poor digestion causes constipation. If this becomes prolonged, it leads to the inability to get rid of waste products causing the

level of toxins in our body to rise. If we continue to eat a food that we have become intolerant to, such as wheat, it can cause bloating and water retention.

What is a wheat-free diet?

A wheat-free diet is when you cut out all products made from wheat and wheat flour including many breads, cereals, pasta and pastries. A wheat-free diet is not the same as a gluten-free diet; wheat-free diets only require that you cut out wheat products, gluten-free diets require cutting out all wheat, spelt, rye, oats, and barley, because these foods all contain gluten. While it is not easy to eliminate wheat from the diet, it is easier than eliminating gluten as there is a much larger range of wheat-free foods available. Any foods labelled ‘gluten-free’ can also be consumed on a wheat-free diet, but not vice versa.

Getting started on a wheat free diet • Exclude wheat and wheat products from your diet for six weeks • Plan a week of wheat-free meals. Include proteins, fresh fruit and vegetables, rice , polenta and wheat free pasta. The less processed the food the better, as many processed foods contain modified starch which is a wheat product.

• Read food labels to check that there is no wheat flour and modified starch • Substitute bread and pasta with wheat free alternative; rice bread, sprouted grain bread and rye bread are available from health shops • Take time to eat your food slowly and chew it thoroughly. Bolting down your food means that the stomach does not have time to secrete the digestive juices needed for its breakdown A wheat free diet is not an easy option but in my experience it can help improve the digestion of many of my clients.

All About... ...George Baker, local musician George Baker from Colwall is sixteen and a keen musician. He’s just launched his first album, a collection of songs he wrote himself.

How do you

describe your music?

Its pop, but with an upbeat-folk element as well. I listened to a huge range of music throughout my childhood and I like to draw all sorts of influences into my music.

On this album I played every instrument & produced it all myself with the exception of one track, produced with my previous band. I was fortunate to use the recording studio at John Masefield High School where I am a student. I also have a small studio set up at home.

Do you have any

advice for others who want to pursue a career in music?

You must give everything for the music, give it all your energy and draining yourself in order to get just an ounce of recognition.

Even today, contacts and links are still vital.

Recommendations from anyone already in the industry, gigging (most of the time for free) and any airplay you can get is crucial to have a career in music. Therefore I suggest playing and doing what you like in music as a hobby so that you don’t lose out, but can still take any chances that might come your way.

Does modern technology make what’s your ultimate ambition? it easier than ever to produce To earn a living out of doing what I love and enjoy your own music?

It makes it easier in one way but harder in other ways. Software such as Logic and Pro tools are fantastic and enable even non-musical people to produce music on a home computer. Such equipment comes at a price but its readily available and relatively easy to set up a home studio and record some tracks. On the downside, the easy access to modern technology means more people than ever are producing their own music. Handing someone a demo album is no longer enough to get your foot in the door. Building a reputation through live music is becoming more important than producing the music.

doing. I want to write music, perform and just live for my music. Whether that will happen is impossible to say in the current climate. Touring the world, playing sell-out concerts, and producing chart topping albums is obviously the ultimate dream but to be able to fulfil a career in music, whether through composing or teaching will make me happy. In the meantime of course I will not give up my dream easily and I will give it my best shot.

Where can people hear your music?

It is all easily available on the web. As well as a MySpace page, the music is on i-Tunes and on Amazon as well. Despite being bogged down by A-Level studies I will be playing locally at ‘open-mic’ nights through the rest of the summer. I will be playing acoustic covers of the tracks from the album as well as a range of popular cover songs.

In May & June Colwall Players Present ‘Kindertransport’ by Diane Samuels

2-4 June

In 1938 and until the outbreak of war in September 1939, almost 10,000 children, mostly Jewish, from families at risk in Nazi-occupied Germany were sent by their parents to safety in Britain. Nine year old Eva ends up in Manchester with the Miller family. She takes time to settle down but slowly starts to trust and depend on her foster mother, Lil. When her parents fail to escape from Germany her attachment to Lil increases and a new identity starts to form. Not long after the war has finished, she changes her name to Evelyn and acquires a British passport. Over thirty years later, her own grown-up daughter, Faith, discovers some old letters in the attic and Evelyn is confronted with her hidden past. There are some secrets that she has even kept from Lil. The production features a cast of 2 men and 5 women, including Harriet Duddy and Holly Daniels who are both recent graduates of the fantastic Young Colwall Players company. “Kindertransport” is directed by Lee Farley.
