3. pancake race Storridge’s 24th Annual Pancake Race takes place on Sunday 7th February at the Village Hall. Organised

by Moira Starkey, this family-friendly event starts at 2pm. Everybody is encouraged to take part in a race - every team involved wins a prize with one team chosen as the overall winner. The event helps to raise money for The Haven in Hereford, a breast cancer support charity.

Entry is £1.50 and Moira promises you’ll have a fun afternoon!

5. master's house anniversary The Master’s House in Ledbury celebrates the first anniversary of its refurbishment on Wednesday 9th March. Situated behind St Katherine’s Hall in the middle of town, it houses a library and hosts regular events, courses and history and literary groups. THE COMPOST BAND The Compost Band makes a welcome return to Ledbury on Saturday 19th March for a Ceilidh which will raise funds for Community Action Ledbury.

For Christian people the season of Lent, running from Ash Wednesday until Easter (this year from 10th February to 27th March) is a time of thoughtful preparation and reflection on the core of their faith. And in recent years it has often been an opportunity to share such reflection with those of different denominations. Thus, Anglicans, Methodists, Baptists, Roman Catholics, Pentecostal and others have come to learn of each other’s traditions and priorities.

Starting at 6.30pm, it will be lots of fun according to Ian Craigan who is the caller for the evening. ‘We play music from the British Isles and across the water. We play country dances with a few fun ones thrown in to keep you thinking! We make sure the dance is clearly explained beforehand, and it’s suitable for all ages.’ The ceilidh is at the Community Hall in Ledbury between 6.30pm and 10.30pm.

In Ledbury we shall be organising inter-church discussion groups which will meet in homes during Lent. Some groups will meet during the morning or afternoon, and others in the evenings – always on a weekday. We shall share the same study material, entitled: ‘Spot the Difference’, which asks what difference our faith makes to aspects of our lives.

Tickets are £10 and include supper, they are available by popping into Community Action Ledbury on Bye Street between 9am and 1pm Monday to Friday, or by calling (01531) 635339.

‘SPOTTING THE DIFFERENCE?’

The groups will be inaugurated with a short act of worship in St Katherine’s Hall on the evening of Wednesday 3rd February, followed by an informal opportunity to meet group leaders and others taking part in the programme. Although there will be signing-up sheets in each of the Ledbury churches in the new year, it will still be possible to join the programme on the 3rd February.

flicks in the sticks Flicks in the Sticks is a chance to watch recently released films, as well as the occasional classic movie – in local village halls. It’s run by dedicated groups of local volunteers who are busy organising their film showings for 2016 Bosbury Flicks in the Sticks Alison Archer helps Brian and Liz Clutterbuck to organise the film evenings at Bosbury Parish Hall.

‘Flicks in the sticks was set up by Brian and Liz who are very active locally. It was originally part of a fundraising exercise for the Parish Hall, something it continues to do today. In fact the only difference since inception is the films are no longer Reels on Wheels (35 mm film), but are now DVD. I have a lot of interest in film, and I visit the cinema in Malvern every week. At the end of each film I ask myself, ‘would that be suitable for Flicks in the Sticks?’ I make suggestions to Brian and Liz and we decide between us what will be shown. It’s a fine line, you have choose films that suit your audience, so we tend to show contemporary films that you might have missed, or would like to see again.

Coming to a Flicks screening is a social occasion.

We always have a break in the middle of the film for refreshments and people enjoy meeting so much that it’s hard to get everybody to sit down again! Our audience is not just from Bosbury, but from Colwall, Ledbury and Tarrington as well. We liaise with the Flicks team in Colwall, occasionally exchanging a film, but also making sure our programmes don’t overlap.

Just before Christmas we had a special screening of ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’, the classic film from the early 1960s, starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard. Everybody dressed up for the occasion and we enjoyed prosecco and canapes during the interval. The evening raised more than £800 for local charities.

Flicks in the Sticks is overseen by Arts Alive, an

organisation promoting the arts, who hold similar screenings across Herefordshire and Shropshire.

They help us with licensing for screenings and with publicity – they are a very helpful group of people.

Flicks in the Sticks is a fantastic night out.

There is lots to look forward to this Spring and Summer, and we hope to see you at one of our screenings.’

Colwall Flicks in the Sticks Colwall Flicks in the Sticks has a busy month this February, with a showing of Cinema Paradiso, the story of a famous film director returning to the village in Sicily where he discovered his love of film. Later in the month there will be a special Film Evening, still to be formally announced but you can receive details on request from the email address below.

In March the film Chocolat is an excellent adaptation of the Joanne Harris bestselling novel.

In April, Dark Horse is a lovely documentary about a racehorse and the story is so incredible you think it must be fictional. The Spring programme is rounded off with The Lunchbox, a charming story set in India, which has proved very popular at other Flicks venues.

To generate ideas for films to show at Colwall Flicks in the Sticks, the team of volunteers who run it would love to hear from you. They are setting up a group to choose future film showings, but even if you’d simply like to request a film, get in touch.

By Kaspa Thompson The Japanese have a tradition of starting something new when they hit sixty years old.

It’s called kanreki. There is a special costume to celebrate the day, and a sense that you can have a fresh start in life. They ask themselves, ‘What have I done in my past sixty years that I can build upon, what do I want to let go of, and what new things can I start?’

he New Year celebrations have the same kind of energy: the wonderful chance to start something new, to be invigorated and to move into the next part of life with a fresh burst of energy. I get this sense in springtime as well; as the natural world starts to flourish I want to take part in that growing and blossoming.

We don’t have to wait for a special time to think in this way. Every time the sun comes up in the morning is an opportunity for a fresh start. Every moment of every day contains the possibility for trying something new.

Dr Morita Shoma lived at the turn of the last century in Japan. He was a psychotherapist and his therapy centred around an important insight: how we feel is created by what we do.

If we want to live happy and satisfied lives we should take part in positive activities.

If you want to improve your life – choose to do something new, and positive, today.

In December last year (why wait until the New Year?) I started jogging again, after a six month break. How fit and healthy we are has a direct influence on our happiness. Our bodies and minds are strongly connected to one another.

When I’m running I not only enjoy the individual runs, I also feel generally better in myself. A sedentary life leads to a slow sluggish mind and low feelings.

Be realistic: if you haven’t moved your body much since P.E. in school, start small and choose something you will enjoy.

I also started sketching over the Christmas break.

Some of my drawings are terrible, but that’s not the point. I’m enjoying the creative process, I’m enjoying seeing myself improve and I’m enjoying

learning a new skill. It takes me away from my computer screen and into a quiet restorative space.

Is there something creative you would like to try?

Put an ‘artists date’ in your diary: Pick something that you will enjoy and make space in your life for it. Go to the theatre, visit a gallery, or buy yourself some clay to play with.

Sometimes we will hit resistance when we try new things. All change takes work, sometimes.

Talk yourself through the resistance and keep going. Remind yourself what the rewards are; something good is waiting for you.

Get yourself a buddy: if you both start something new you can support each other when the going gets tough, and celebrate your successes together.

Join a group or a class: it’s much easier to get into the swing of something new if there is a structure like a weekly meeting to help you.

Start volunteering: you’ll learn new skills, it will take you out of your ordinary life and into new areas, and you’ll be giving something back to the community too, what could be better?

Make some time to think about what you can do to lead a more satisfying life, and then do it.

All About...

HOME-START HEREFORDSHIRE Home-Start Herefordshire is a charity supporting vulnerable, fragile and hard to reach families experiencing difficult times.

For 34 years the scheme has given support to local families.

Among their volunteers is Judy Hooley from Ledbury who tells us more.

What training did you receive?

I received ten days of training over ten weeks, the most memorable of which taught us to look at our own attitudes. This was very insightful and made us appreciate the assumptions which we cheerfully lived with - and which could be wrong!

The importance of confidentiality was underlined, anything said in someone’s home remains private within Home-Start. We also learnt about the importance of Safeguarding in this modern world and the situations that face families in the present day.

Were you nervous when you met your first family?

Of course, but there was nothing to be nervous about. I was taken by a member of staff to meet the family which had been carefully chosen for me by the Home-Start Herefordshire Organisers. They take time and care in matching volunteers with families in need, as it is important that there is a good feeling between us when we first meet.

The first family had three tiny children so it was very busy, I was made to feel very welcome by the family and we formed a very good relationship. That mother said to me ‘The really nice thing about you coming is I don’t have to pretend I’m coping.’ If the washing up wasn’t done it didn’t matter to me!

Can the role of a volunteer be emotional at times?

It can be yes. In a lot of ways I’ve been quite lucky with my families, but you discover things which make you think ‘I thought my life was hard, but …’ It opens your eyes to the things that can happen in people’s lives.

What’s your advice to potential volunteers?

If you are prepared to be uncritical and genuinely enjoy contact with other adults and children, it’s a wonderful thing to give your time to. You might be nervous at first, but then if you started a new job tomorrow you might feel the same - what will they think of me? Will I be alright? Can I face their problems? Once you are through the door you will discover it’s a privilege to be treated as a friend to people who really need a friend. We aren’t forced to visit, we go because we would like to visit them and they are pleased to see us. You truly get more out of volunteering for Home-Start than you put in and for me it’s an enormous source of pleasure.

ORANGE MARMALADE Equipment You will need a large heavy-based saucepan with a capacity of 6.5 litres or a heavy-based preserving pan. A 30cm square piece of muslin or a double thickness of gauze from the chemist. Some string, a preserves funnel, a kitchen timer and 6 x 450g jars with lids and 6 waxed paper discs.

Method Begin by lightly buttering the base of the saucepan (to help prevent the marmalade catching), measure 2.5 litres of water into the pan, then cut the lemon and oranges in half (discarding any bits of stalk) and squeeze the juice out of them. Add the juice to the water and place the pips and any bits of pith that cling to the squeezer on the square of gauze or muslin.

Now cut the orange peel into quarters with a sharp knife, and one by one, fold and squeeze the quarters tightly together and cut them into shreds. As you cut, add the shreds to the water and any pips or spare pith you come across should go onto the gauze or muslin.

Now tie the pips and pith up loosely in the gauze or muslin to form a little bag, and tie this on to the handle of the pan so that the bag is suspended in the water and leave to soak overnight to help extract the pectin for a better set.

Bring the liquid up to simmering point and simmer very gently, uncovered, for 2 hours or thereabouts, until the peel is completely soft (test a piece carefully by pressing it between your finger and thumb, if you can squeeze it in half the peel is ready). Meanwhile, chill three side plates in the fridge or the freezer compartment of the fridge.

Next, remove the bag of pips and leave it to cool.

Then pour the sugar into the pan and stir it now and then over a low heat, until all the crystals have dissolved, do not boil before all the sugar has dissolved. Now increase the heat to its highest and squeeze the bag of pips over the plate to extract all of the sticky,

Ingredients 1kg Seville oranges 1 large lemon 2.5 litres water 2kg granulated sugar a little butter

jelly-like substance that contains the pectin. As you squeeze you’ll see it ooze out. Then using a balloon whisk, whisk it into the rest of the ingredients in the pan.

As soon as the mixture reaches a really fast boil, start timing. Give it an occasional stir, then after 8 - 10 minutes according to the size of your pan, as setting point can be easily missed, it is better to test too early rather than too late - remove the pan from the heat and spoon a little of the marmalade onto one of the cold plates from the fridge, and let it cool back in the fridge.

When it has cooled, you can test if you have a ‘set’ by pushing the mixture with your little finger: if it has a really crinkly skin, it is set. If not, continue to boil the marmalade and give it the same test at about 5 minute intervals until it does set. You may need to test it two or three times. If you have a sugar thermometer, setting point is 105C. After that remove the pan from the heat. If there’s a lot of scum, most of it can be dispersed by stirring in half a teaspoon of butter, and the rest can be spooned off. Leave the marmalade to settle for 10-20 minutes or until it starts to thicken. In the meantime, the jars should be washed in mild soapy water, rinsed and dried and heated in a medium oven for 5 minutes, or warm from the dishwasher.

Pour the marmalade, with the aid of a funnel and a ladle, into the warm jars, (so that it goes right up to the neck) cover with waxed discs (wax side down) making sure you cover all the surface and put the lids on while still hot.

Label when cold and store in a dry, cool, dark place.

Your marmalade should keep for up to a year.

green fingers At Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget Evans has advice on the importance of soil At the beginning of a new Year we often reflect on the past as well as make promises for the year ahead. This year I will have been working in horticulture for almost 40 years. For 36 of those years I have been self-employed, running Caves Folly Nurseries and selling plants to thousands of people all over the UK. Thirty years ago I made the decision to move from conventional growing to organic growing.

This was a big change, both culturally and financially. Many growing principels are the same in Organic growing, the main difference being the care and sustainability of the soil.

2015 was the International Year of the Soil.

Across the world, the subject of soil has reached maximum exposure, encouraging farmers and growers alike to think carefully about how we manage the top few inches of the world’s surface.

In many countries with extreme climates, the sustainability of the soil can dictate the survival of indigenous people. With no means of growing food people will migrate to more fertile areas, causing conflict and yet more pressure on the land through over-cultivation.

The simple principels of soil management should apply to every custodian of the soil. Even in our own gardens the fertility and health of the soil can bring all sorts of benefits. By adding organic matter to our soil we are feeding the bacteria and micro-organisms which help to sustain healthy and disease free plants.

Adding organic matter also helps the soil’s ability to cope wth extreme weather conditions, provide food for wildlife, and provide us with nutritious vegetables.

As I write this there are flowering snowdrops, scilla, daffodils and a birch tree in leaf, so who

knows what March will bring! Here are a few jobs that need doing in the next couple of months: Jobs to do in February Kitchen Garden Continue harvesting Brussels sprouts, parsnips and other winter veg.

Begin forcing rhubarb-place a bucket over the crown to encourage sweet, pink shoots.

Apple and Pear trees can be pruned even in frosty weather.

As crops are harvested,clear old woody debris, add organic matter and cover soil with black plastic or fabric to keep areas free of weeds.

Greenhouse Sow lettuce, summer brassicas, radishes, spinach, baby leaf salad leaves in early February.

At the end of February/March sow any other summer veg. such as Tomato, Courgette, Beans.

It is often beneficial to start some plants off early under glass, but many will prefer to be sown directly into position (check on the seed packet ) Try to plan a crop rotation over a couple of years to avoid replanting crops in the same place.

Ornamental Garden Cut back any deciduous perennials or grasses to allow the new shoots to emerge.

Weed and edge borders.

Cut back and shape deciduous shrubs and hedges such as Beech, Hazel, ‘Stool’ Cornus and Willow by cutting back to 3/4 buds from the base.

Prune Roses.

Cut back woody Lavender and Penstemon plants.

Finish any construction work in the garden ready for spring.

Sow annuals such as cosmos, cornflowers under glass to get a head start for planting out in May. Enjoy the longer days and get fit for the gardening frenzy of Summer!

Volante Strings aims to bring music making into the heart of the community with lovely, interesting programmes that are easy to listen to and performed with skill, enthusiasm and a great sense of enjoyment. Quick Chick pea & spinach curry

Serves 4 Ready in 20 min

Ingredients • 2 large onions, chopped • 2 cloves garlic crushed • 1 red chilli crushed • ½ tsp ground turmeric • 1 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp ground coriander • 2 tsp garam masala • large pinch of salt • 1 tin of chopped tomatoes

A quick healthy supper for a cold evening.

1. Heat oil in a pan, sauté the onion and garlic in oil, add the chilli and spices and salt and cook for two minutes, stirring constantly.

2. Add the cooked chick peas, tomatoes, spinach and a little water if needed.

3. Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for at least 10 minutes.

Serve with rice or chapatti bread.

country music The Rushall Country Music Club near Much Marcle is a local mecca for fans of country music. Many well-known artists appear at the evenings which are run by Ian Wheeler and his wife Jean, who estimate it’s raised thousands of pounds for charity since it began. he music evenings began almost forty years ago, back in 1978. ‘We started going to see music and thought rather than going out, we could run something ourselves’ says Ian. ‘At first we organised evenings for local sports and other clubs but then decided we would organise it to raise money for local charities.’

After a few years moving from venue to venue, they settled on the Rushall Club near Much Marcle. People travel far and wide to hear the music, with some of the better known Irish artists attracting audience members from as far away as Devon.

In March Kenny Paul, a country singer and musician from Northern Ireland will be performing.

‘We hold an evening roughly one a month’ says Ian, ‘a lot of our artists come from mid-Wales but there are also Irish artists who might be on tour.

Liam McLaughlin from Northern Ireland is one of our favourite artists. We saw him perform in Spain and told him we ran a club. He said he would come and perform, and that’s how he started to visit us.’

Entry to the evenings is usually £5, or slightly more for better known artists, and includes a buffet. The evenings help to raise money for charities including St Michael’s Hospice, Acorns Children’s Hospice, and Marie Curie, and Ian

estimates they’ve raised more than £100,000 since they began all those years ago. ‘I feel very satisfied, and all the more because the supporters of those charities come and support us.’

COMING UP at the Rushall Country Music Club 13th February: Tony Hughes – A talented solo artist playing a mix of music. Starts at 8pm, entry £5 12th March: Solo artist Mark Brown - Entry £5 18th March: Kenny Paul. Born and raised on a farm in Northern Ireland, Kenny’s talent was quickly spotted after he began performing in local clubs. Today, he often tours and to date has released 18 albums. With regular radio and tv appearances, he still enjoys performing live and says he’s ‘looking forward to playing for Ian in the cow shed again – it’s always a good night there.’

confusions & Hero's welcome Alan Ayckbourn’s 79th play and first major revival of Confusions on national tour to Malvern Theatres.

In its 60th anniversary year, the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, in association with Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, is embarking on a national tour with two productions written and directed by world-renowned playwright Alan Ayckbourn. Malvern Theatres welcomes the world premiere production of the author’s 79th play, Hero’s Welcome, and a major revival of the 1974 hit Confusions.

In Confusions, from a devoted and isolated mother to her unfaithful travelling salesman husband, through a solicitous waiter to wellheeled diners and an utterly shambolic garden fete, human frailty is laid bare as one hilarious situation after another unfolds. Each of the plays connects to the next through one of its characters until the final one is reached when four people sit alone on park benches. From high farce to poignant observation; the laughs, however dark, keep coming.

Ayckbourn’s latest play Hero’s Welcome recently had its world premiere in Scarborough.

Seventeen years ago, Murray fled the neighbourhood under somewhat of a cloud and certain local folk have long memories, not least Alice, the mayor, whom he left standing at the altar. Once the welcome flags have stopped waving and the town band has ceased playing, few of his friends seem particularly happy to see him back. Murray’s declared intention of staying put and settling down with his new bride threatens to stir up all sorts of old rivalries and resentments.

Hero’s Welcome can be seen on Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd March. Confusions can be seen on Monday 29th February, then from Thursday 3rd to Saturday 5th March. Book to see both plays for a special price of £34.72.
