ou’ll have heard me on this subject before, but it really is so important I thought I should write on the subject again, to make sure you’re aware of these important changes and what to do about them.

New and far-reaching pension changes have taken effect from April 2015 – the “most radical… in almost a century”, as the Chancellor put it.

They could transform the retirement prospects of millions of people, especially those who have wisely built up their pension savings over the years.

In a nutshell, from age 55 you’ll have total freedom over how you take money from your pension, you can even take the whole fund as cash. In addition, your pension needn’t end with you, you may be able to pass it on, in many cases tax free when you die.

What to do…

As a result, we’re seeing more and more people taking action already. Those approaching retirement are looking into what makes most sense for them. Those with some years to go are considering adding what they can to their pension, thus benefiting from the automatic boost of tax relief.

The flipside of all this freedom and flexibility is that as a saver you now face what may seem a maze of options – whether you’re retiring this year or in a few years’ time. How can you avoid unknowingly making ill-informed decisions which could backfire or miss the benefits of these new opportunities?

The procession leaves Colwall Stone and processes to the Community Orchard where there will be a ceremony followed by food, drink and singing. VENUE FOR HIRE: COLWALL ALE HOUSE

If you’re looking for a venue to hire for an event or a party, Colwall Ale House is now available for bookings through December and into next year.

This beautiful black and white timbered hall stands next to the church on the edge of the village. Constructed in the 1530s during the reign of Henry VIII, it was originally used for church festivities and a place to sell ale for church funds.

In 1614 the Bishop decided that too much ale was being consumed so it was converted into alms houses for the parish poor and it was used as housing until the middle of the 20th century. In the late 1980s the Ale House underwent a full renovation and was transformed into a lovely, atmospheric hall.

Now fully equipped with kitchen and toilet facilities, it is an excellent venue for parties, concerts, classes, club meetings, lectures and rehearsals. With chairs and tables for 60, as well as china, cutlery and glasses, the Ale House can be hired for just £8.50 an hour.

simple cheese straws Bake ahead and store in an airtight container, enjoy with drinks, dips, hummus and more as an alternative to crisps, serve with cheese and port... snack when you are feeling peckish.

Lay the pastry on a cutting board, brush generously with the beaten egg, cover with your favourite cheese and your choice of sprinkles or shakes ...

Cut with a sharp knife 0.5cm strips and lay flat on a baking sheet lined with baking parchment and cook in pre heated oven 200c/180c fan/gas 6 for 25/30 mins or until golden and crisp. Check during cook and turn in order to cook evenly.

CIRLCE DANCE & harmony SINGING New Daytime Circle Dance and Harmony Singing groups are starting in West Malvern Village Hall in January. They are run by Sunnara Vivian who tells us more.

oth groups are very accessible for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy with the emphasis on the pleasure of taking part.

You can come to Circle Dance on your own or with a friend and simply join in. Each dance is taught. No experience of dance is needed, being in a circle and holding hands means you are supported, which is a great help for beginners.

Dancers come for many reasons including getting exercise, making friends and socialising. It’s some ‘me’ time away from the stresses of work and everyday life.

Circle Dance draws on the rich and diverse traditional dances and music of many countries.

New dances are also created by the circle dancers to both traditional and contemporary music.

Harmony Singing is unaccompanied, simply singing with friends for the joy of it. The songs are

all taught by ear and include rounds and songs with glorious harmonies in two, three or four parts - we make an amazing sound together!

All voices and all levels of experience, or none are welcome. Our groups are not choirs. There are no auditions, we don’t give performances and no-one will ever be asked to sing on their own. It’s all about listening to each other and singing together that counts.

We sing a variety of songs from all over the world.

We do have our own song books to help us, but after a while most people find that learning by ear means they can put them down and simply sing.

There is a free ‘Taster’ session the first time at both of the new Harmony Singing and Circle Dance sessions.

colwall orchard group After a busy autumn harvesting apples for juicing, Colwall Orchard Group heads into winter with two of its most popular events.

Mistletoe Fair On 12th December the Orchard Group holds its Mistletoe Fair in Colwall. The mistletoe for sale is sustainably harvested as part of the Orchard Group’s winter tree rescue programme around local orchards. It is tied into decorated bunches for sale and the money raised is used in the upkeep of the village orchard in Colwall. As well as the mistletoe, apple juice and preserves will be on sale as well as other seasonal goodies, offering the chance to find an early Christmas present for those ‘hard to buy for’ friends and relatives.

Wassailing On 16th January the Orchard Group holds its annual wassail, an old custom to wake the orchard up from the winter, and encourage a good crop in the coming year. Gathering from 5.30pm at Colwall Stone in the middle of the village, a procession moves off around 6pm, heading along Stone Drive and Old Church Road.

After arriving at the orchard, cider is poured into the roots of the trees before a young boy is lifted into the branches of a tree while the crowd makes as much noise as possible! There will be food, drink and singing at the event – if you’re planning to go then wear suitable clothing and footwear and bring a silly hat if you have one.

The Orchard In the meantime, the group is busy maintaining Colwall Community Orchard, replanting a few trees, repairing the cages that protect the trees from damage, putting up sponsorship plaques and looking after new hedges which are doing well. Volunteers help in other orchards and gardens around the area, carrying out rescue pruning on trees and managing mistletoe. If you need any help or advice, they’d be happy to hear from you.

The group gets involved in other Herefordshire orchards as part of the Three Counties

Traditional Orchard Project and is currently working with communities in Breinton, Hildersley and Whitbourne, teaching them about orchard management and passing on skills to their volunteers.

Hedge and Tree Orders

The Orchard Group’s tree and hedge ordering service is running again this year. By gathering in orders from the area, they get a favourable rate from suppliers which is passed on to customers, while retaining a small margin which goes towards the maintainance of the village orchard.

all about teamwork When Sascha McDonald, the Publishing Editor of All About Magazines, started All About West of the Hills, she never thought that nearly seven years later her magazines would win the national ‘Community Magazine 2015’ award at the Independent Magazine Publishers Conference this October. But it did and she did, alongside two other awards – highly commended Inspirational Business Woman 2015 and Best Social Media Presence 2015 for our Facebook page. Here she tells her story.

C

asting my mind back to the end of 2008 I see myself and my computer, in a little office in our house, working really hard at the start-up of a new local magazine for the area west of the Malvern Hills. I had never done anything like that in my life and I remember living on adrenaline for months on end. It was the most scary, exciting and challenging time! There were lots of firsts; selling space to businesses, designing adverts, laying out and putting together a magazine, invoicing, chasing payments, distributing thousands of magazines… but some kind of deep drive got me through it and the very first magazine went off to print by the deadline I had set myself.

After that first edition, called ‘Colwall & Area and delivered by hand to 2,500 houses initially, the magazine went from strength to strength and very soon I called in the help of an accountant – Steve Ollis from Active Accountants, who is still with me, someone to keep the finance admin in order and Tina, our fantastic and dedicated sales person for Malvern. She helped me launch our second ‘All About Malvern’ magazine within the first year of starting the business, and is still working very hard behind the scenes to fill our magazines with local business and services.

With launching a community website (www. allaboutmalvernhills.com) in 2012 and a third magazine in Worcester in 2013 the group of hard workers behind the scene now includes Julie,

who does a lot of administration and finances, and Teresa, who takes care of the sales in Worcester. What a team! Without them All About Magazines would not be where we are now.

Winning these three awards has humbled me, has excited me and has made me proud and thankful. Of my team, including James, my husband, who writes most of the content of our magazines. Of my children, who sometimes have to be patient with a hard working mother, especially when it is close to deadline. Of our fantastic team of deliverers, including John from Mitchell Distribution in Worcester, who works so hard in all weathers to get the copies out to everyone. Of our loyal customers, many of whom stay with us year in year out. Of our printers, Warwick Printing, who print the highest quality magazines time and time again. Joyful Music is a concert for the whole family with carols old and new. Performed by Ledbury Choral Society and conducted by Malcolm Macleod, the programme includes Hymn to St Cecilia, an enjoyable choral work by Benjamin Britten. It is based on a poem by WH Auden, who has plenty of local connections as he taught at The Downs School in Colwall.

Join Ledbury Community Choir at The Market Theatre on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th December 7.30 pm for their Christmas Concert.

The event, which raises money for charity, is one of the choir’s most popular annual events.

green fingers It might be winter,but the garden still offers greenery to decorate your house with for Christmas, as Bridget from Caves Folly Nursery explains.

As I am writing this it does not seem much like winter. There is still a lot of colour on the trees and the weather is very mild. The grass is still growing and many perennials are still flowering!

Well folks, it’s almost ‘that’ time of year again when we indulge in excesses and forget about work!

With the imminent arrival of Christmas, as our thoughts become occupied with organising families and food, it is important to spare a thought for any tender plants and put them under cover or wrap them up in fleece before the cold weather arrives. The rest of the garden can sit and wait until the new year!

With so many artificial and plastic Christmas decorations around it is fun to bring some of the natural world into our homes. There is an abundance of vegetation to make wreaths, garlands and table arrangements from evergreens, flowers and berries. Ivy, Laurel, Holly, Viburnum and Eucalyptus leaves all make a good foliage base in which to add berries, cones and fresh flowers such as Chrysanthemums.

And don’t forget the mistletoe. You can always have it on a piece of string to lower at an opportune moment! (See details of the Colwall Mistletoe Fair on Page 28.)

Pot plants are an easy way to brighten our houses up with natural decoration, they also make great presents. Plants such as Cyclamen and Primroses do well in a cool house with Poinsettia and Christmas cacti thriving in a warm atmosphere. Many pot plants such as Cyclamen are great value and will carry on flowering through to February.

With Christmas over and the decorations and lights put away, the countryside and house can seem very drab. Invest a few pennies on some pots of winter pansies and primroses - these will brighten up your doorstep until the arrival of the early bulbs in February.

Work off some of that chocolate by digging over the veg plot, pruning apple trees, cutting back perennials and tidying up ready for spring.

Remember if there is ‘no’ frost or rain there is ‘no’ excuse to sit inside! Get out and garden, go for a walk, top up those vitamin D levels in the sunlight, there is still so much outside to enjoy in winter.

One of my favourite jobs on a wet winter’s day is to browse through my seed catalogues and order exciting new varieties. After all, it is only a few weeks to February when I will start the seed sowing for 2016.

the reality principle

By Kaspa Thompson Yesterday afternoon I was tired, and I was grumpy. I was upset with someone for not having behaved how I wanted them too, or how I thought I would have behaved in their situation.

I worked over the situation in my mind. I was justifying my upset feelings to myself, but of course this just kept the frustration alive.

watched the rain running down the window as I did the washing up after lunch. The view across the valley was obscured by a fine grey mist.

that had upset me, but I also saw his reasons for making those choices. I was also able to see the version of reality that I was trying to protect, and that it was simply a misplaced expectation.

Somehow I managed to catch sight of what I was doing: I was resisting reality. I couldn’t change what had happened, and every time I went over events in my mind I was getting more upset.

I was pitting what I wanted against what had actually taken place and, naturally, reality won out.

Once I had seen more of what was real I was able to sit down with my friend and talk over what had happened in a pretty relaxed way.

We create a huge amount of pain for ourselves by resisting reality. We’ll all have our own style of doing this, and different styles at different times.

Perhaps we distract ourselves by opening a bottle of wine; or reaching for another chocolate; or ordering a new pair of shoes, or that latest collectable online. Perhaps we’ll try to push reality away, getting upset with other people, or inanimate objects. Often anger is an attempt to create distance between us and something unsettling. Perhaps we’ll simply try to pretend that what we don’t like isn’t there, and become exhausted or even depressed as it takes all of our energy to hold reality at bay.

When I stood at the sink, as soon as I noticed what my mind had been doing my tiredness started to lift. I felt awake again. As I had started to accept reality the energy that I’d been putting into railing against it, or just ignoring it, was suddenly available for other uses.

Along with giving us some energy back, accepting what is means that we can then give ourselves options: the more we resist reality the less options we have.

With my hands in hot water, washing the dishes, I not only saw the choices my friend had made

One common thing that affects how well we are able to accept reality is a confusion between things that are inside our control and things that are outside our control. I couldn’t change what had happened, or my friend, but I could change my response. Many situations that we struggle with are like this, and thinking clearly about what is and isn’t in our control can help us move towards acceptance and creating options.

There’s a simple exercise I use sometimes to help with this. I create three columns in my journal, the first for elements within my control, the second for elements I can influence, and the third for things completely outside my control.

Then I fill in the blanks.

Anything that brings us closer to seeing what is really there is a good thing. The more clearly we can see, and accept what is in front of us, the more likely we are to be at ease with what is happening and to make a good response.

couch to 5k A PERSONAL STORY

‘I never thought I’d be able to call myself a runner, but now, thanks to the Ledbury Harriers’ “Couch to 5k” programme, I can!’

In the autumn Ledbury Harriers Running Club started a course for people new to running. It proved so popular, it’s starting again this January. Here, Hannah Phillips tells us her experience of the new Couch to 5K running programme. spotted an advert for the programme on Facebook back in September and thought I might give it a go. Like most people, I knew I should be doing a bit more exercise but had never really had the motivation or encouragement to get started. The “Couch to 5k” concept seemed to offer a way in, so I decided to give it a go, along with four of my work colleagues I had managed to talk into joining me!

So there we were, along with about 40 others, on a Tuesday evening at Ledbury Rugby Club: off our couches, but not sure what we were letting ourselves in for! We needn’t have worried, the programme is designed so that beginners like us start off very gradually, initially just running for a minute at a time, with plenty of recovery time built in. Very quickly, over just a few weeks, we found our fitness and stamina levels improving, meaning we could run for longer with fewer rest breaks.

Getting together regularly as a group really helps keep everyone motivated, and we are encouraged to complete two more training runs each week, independent of the group, to increase our fitness.

My work colleagues and I also decided we would use the opportunity of the final 5k run to raise money for our chosen charity, Macmillan.

The Couch to 5k programme really does allow everyone to get involved and achieve something worthwhile. We have all noticed a difference in our fitness level and had lots of fun along the way too. So if you’ve always wanted to be a bit fitter, or if you’ve never considered taking up running but think there might be something in it, get off that couch and get involved!

Topic of the month: Cycling and your neck The sporting success of Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins and Victoria Pendleton has given cycling in the UK a massive boost. People of all ages are getting back on bikes and enjoying the sport. This has spawned the amusing acronym “MAMIL” which for the uninitiated stands for “Middle Aged Man in Lycra”.

Dropped handlebars For many the appeal of the classic road bike far outweighs that johnny-come-lately sport of mountain biking. However the riding position with dropped handlebars is far from ideal from an anatomical point of view, especially in the more mature rider. On a long ride, the lumbar spine is held flexed for hours at a time, leading to increased compression of the lumbar discs. Conversely the neck is held in significant hyperextension which reduces the space available for the nerve roots as they exit the spine. With tyres at 120 psi and no suspension there is the added hazard of shock and vibration being transmitted through to the rider.

This clinic is privately run by David Jones DO. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.

The ageing neck

Most pro cyclists will retire aged 35 years or younger whereas recreational cyclists are often much older than this when they take it up. Even at 30 years of age the discs between the vertebrae may be beginning to dehydrate (spondylosis) and the facet joints will gradually become arthritic. With the boom in road cycling I have seen many cases of riders suffering neck and shoulder pain, often with pins and needles or numbness in the hands.

What can be done?

If you love cycling but have associated symptoms the good news is that you may not necessarily have to give up. Most manufacturers produce comfort orientated versions of their road bikes. The geometry of the frame is different to give a more upright riding position.

Additionally components can be changed to further enhance the effect. Stem risers are available and a shorter handlebar stem will bring the rider more upright too. The saddle is also on a slider which can be brought forward. Additionally some hands on treatment and/or acupuncture may be enough to free the troublesome joints. As a cyclist who has suffered with this problem myself, I am very sympathetic to fellow sufferers.

Serves 4

A great way to cook vegetables.

The cranberries give a lovely jewelled effect.

• 500g selection of carrots, parsnips, sweet potato • 2 tbsp extra virgin rapeseed oil • 1 tbsp brown sugar • tsp ground nutmeg • tsp mixed spice • 50g cranberries fresh or dried • 75ml local cider or apple juice • water as needed • salt and black pepper

1. Peel and chop the vegetables. Steam or boil until part cooked. Drain.

2. Put the oil, sugar spices and cider into a pan. Mix well then add the vegetables.

Bring to the boil and simmer until cooked.
