eldom do I allow my mind to wander back to the financial crisis of 2008 as I find the whole saga far too traumatic. Worst of all, very few saw it coming, yet the ‘experts’ have been blind-sided once again.

Fortunately the unfolding result of Brexit isn’t likely to cause anywhere near the same amount of turmoil. The world is a different place, however, we must proceed with caution as this will take years to sort out and we must all prepare for the choppy conditions ahead.

Lessons were certainly learned back in those times, not least how to handle volatility and these same rules apply today. The key word here is diversification. Maybe the pound has dropped in value, maybe UK-biased companies will struggle until trade agreements are negotiated and interest rates are reversed, but a portfolio should never be based in one geographical region any more than it should be invested in any one single asset class. When certain areas of our economy suffer, other areas benefit; when one country struggles, another benefits and so forth.

It is worth reflecting that there is no change immediately as a result of the vote. Indeed it is widely anticipated that it will be at least two years before any UK exit takes place. There have been a number of sensible calls by major business organisations like the CBI and TheCityUK to emphasise business confidence and avoid kneejerk reactions.

It is important that the need to focus on planning for the implications of ‘Brexit’ does not crowd out other actions you are going to take such as taking retirement benefits or starting to plan for events such as long term care, mitigation of IHT or indeed starting to save. As the Governor of

the Bank of England said recently, ‘the question is not whether the UK will adjust but rather how quickly and how well’.

Uncertainty is likely to continue over the coming weeks and months, however the UK Government’s decision to set up a unit to oversee the exit should start to clarify the broad outlines and begin to provide some much needed signposts.

The advice is keep calm, keep invested but make sure diversification is applied to your entire investment holding. I make no apology for repeating myself from previous articles; the key rules and measures to check against your own investments remain and if in doubt, seek qualified help. In March I laid out diversification rules and their importance.

Frankly, no matter what the impending crisis is, we go from one to the next. The American presidential election beckons and diversification has to be the standard, not the exception.

Enjoy Local 1. art exhibition Ledbury Art Society holds its next exhibition on the weekend of 10th and 11th September. Work will be on display at the Burgage Hall on Church Lane, which is open each day between 10am and 4.30pm. Admission is free. Back in June, the society put on an exhibition of art showing local scenes at Ledbury Community Day and invited people to vote for their favourite picture. community NEWS WALKING FOR CHARITY Over ten days in September, John Raine will be walking the length and breadth of the Malvern Hills District to raise money for local mental health charities.

John, who is from West Malvern, is also Chairman of Malvern Hills District Council and has nominated local charities Link Nurseries and Positive Thoughts.

‘I shall be completing a long distance walk of 120 miles through all the local wards and districts of the Malvern Hills District Council and meeting as many people along the way as possible. I might even stop and play some church organs along the way!’ says John, who plays the organ for services at St James’ church in West Malvern.

LEDBURY SWIMMING POOL As major improvement works continue on the swimming pool in Ledbury, exercise classes and the gym sessions take place in a temporary fitness studio. Halo Leisure has opened up a temporary gym in the former Youth Centre building off Bye Street and is offering a special membership price of £19.95 per month while the re-building work on the pool site continues. A total of £2.3 million is being spent to upgrade and extend the gym and exercise studio, makeover the reception and changing facilities and build a new sauna and steam room. It’s due to re-open in April next year.

HOMESTART HEREFORDSHIRE More volunteers are needed to help Homestart Herefordshire with its work supporting local families in need. The charity has recently seen a rise in the number of parents asking for help in and around the Ledbury area and it needs more volunteers to deal with the increased demand.

‘Our volunteers are carefully matched with a suitable family’ says Alison Jones from the charity, ‘and they are given the choice of whether they think the family is suitable for them. Before that, we give them full training in all aspects of family life including the development of children from newborn to teenage years, aspects of safeguarding and much more.’ The next training course beings on 22nd September and runs weekly on a Thursday until the end of November. Travel expenses are paid for all those attending.

‘Our volunteers are vital to what we do’ says Alison Jones, ‘and we simply wouldn’t be able to offer such a fantastic service to our county without the help of dedicated volunteers.’

adisthana In recent years Coddington Court has been home to an oil company and a school for children with autism. Today it has new residents: a community of Buddhists.

t

he Triratna Buddhist community has been in its new home here for a little over three years. It’s been a busy time, renovating the buildings and making the place suitable for use both as the hub of the Triratna movement, a place of learning and a spiritual retreat.

There are around 25 people who live and work here permanently. Others visit for retreats, courses and spiritual training. Yashodeva moved here three and a half years ago, after the Triratna community purchased the building and its grounds. Originally from Brighton, he spent many years in Spain until coming here to help breathe new life into the building.

‘It’s been a lot of work’ he says, gazing around the many buildings on the site, ‘not least with fifty toilets to maintain!’ At the heart of the site is a large Georgian house, surrounded by modern buildings. Repairing and renovating it all has been a mammoth task, but has been achieved by volunteer help as well as from local building firms and contractors.

There are international visitors too. ‘At the moment we have a group of women here on retreat, who have come from Mexico, Turkey, Australia and Sweden as well as the UK’ says Yashodeva. The Order has attracted followers who engage with Buddha’s teachings and give them relevance in the modern world. It doesn’t make a distinction between monastic and lay members of the community which covers a wide range of ages and backgrounds.

‘For those of us living in the west, it might be about finding a way to deal with stress or finding a direction in our lives’ says Sanghadarsini, another of the community here. ‘All sorts of people come here, from those who work fulltime, to those with families. Some take a more devotional line while others simply come to learn.

It’s not just about following an imported tradition but about making the teachings of Buddha relevant in the modern world.’

The grounds extend to several acres and are lovingly maintained by Sanghadeva. A member of the community since 1980, he’s created beautiful gardens in front of the old house and maintains the wider area as well.

The community here is keen to be a good neighbour and holds an annual open day to give local people the chance to meet them and have a look around. They also created the walking routes around the site in response to concern from some local people about visitors walking along the narrow roads and lanes in the area.

Many local people come here to attend classes in meditation and Buddhist learning. A drop-in class is held on Wednesday evenings for people

We held Nest Fest for the first time last year, and it was a great success despite the rain at the end of the day! If you remember, it was a night of really heavy rain which caused problems elsewhere around the area, but it didn’t spoil our day. Stall holders were just packing up when the heavens opened and we still managed to have a great day.

We welcomed 700 people along last year.

We’re offering a free family day out along much the same lines this time around. The day runs from 10am until 6pm and there will be music throughout, with each musician or group playing a 45 minute set. The bouncy castle was hugely popular last year so we’ve made sure there is lots to keep the kids entertained this time.

A big part of the idea behind Nest Fest is to create an opportunity to meet local food and drink producers in person. We sell a great range

of local produce at The Nest and wanted to give people a chance to meet the people who make it.

We will have plenty of local food and drink stalls to browse which will include ice creams for the children and Wilce’s Cider and the Friday Beer Company for the grown-ups!

Last year, I was really happy that people arrived and then stayed all day. I like to think of it as an overgrown village fete! Admission and parking is free, we welcome everyone including dogs. Do come along on 20th August and join us for an enjoyable – and free – family-friendly day out.

Malvern Hills Challenge The Malvern Hills Challenge is a fundraising walk across the Hills to raise money for Help for Heroes. Taking place on September 17th this year, there’s a short as well as a longer route to sign up for. Tim Kidwell is the Challenge Organiser and tells us more.

How many years has it been going, and has it developed in that time?

The first Challenge took place in 2011, we had a break for 2 years and the event was re-energised last year, with the current committee building on the original scheme and looking to the Malvern Hills Conservators to authorise a permanent ‘Heroes Trail’ along the length of the Hills.

Who takes part and what do participants tell you?

The 2015 Challenge saw 248 entrants from all over the country, coming from as far afield as Bedford, Colchester and Portsmouth as individuals and teams. However, the bulk of those participating were locals from Worcestershire and Herefordshire. Supporting volunteers came from across the Two Counties from Help for Heroes, St John’s Ambulance as well as Army Cadets and local schools. Local businesses were hugely generous in their contributions; providing sponsorship, raffle prizes and stands at the finish in Rosebank Gardens. The Mayor presented medals.

Helen does all the advertising, graphics and social media. Lots of other volunteers make it all possible in the build-up and on the day.

How much has the event raised to date?

People have been hugely generous, raising just over £3,000 last year with £32,000 raised by Malvern Help for Heroes over 2015. Anyone can enter either the longer, 15km walk, or the shorter 7km walk at www.malvernhillschallenge.org.

There are goodie bags and t-shirts for all as well as medals for everyone who finishes.

All About...

ledbury quilters This active, friendly group meets in Ledbury every month for talks, workshops and a social sew. Bobbie Turley who is the Secretary of Ledbury Quilters tells us more.

Tell us what you do We are an active group of around 40 members of all ages who range in experience from beginners to those with more expertise in all types of patchwork and quilting, from traditional to contemporary quilts to wall hangings.

We meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month, in the evening at the Baptist Church in Ledbury. We often have a visiting speaker who will talk and demonstrate a technique. At other times we’ll bring our sewing bits and pieces and one of our members will give us a project to start on before taking it home to finish. Apart from anything else it’s a social and friendly get together!

The group itself is 24 years old and so next year we are celebrating our 25th anniversary. We are already planning our celebrations which will include a special exhibition.

What is the attraction of quilting as a hobby?

I think the real attraction of quilting is creating something from nothing. Some of us follow a traditional route while others use their artistic flair to create some incredible pieces of work! There really is so much scope to create something special to you and it is very satisfying. There’s a lot to learn about patchwork and quilting, but there’s something to suit all abilities.

Another of the rewarding things we do is to create quilts for charity, including Project Linus UK which delivers thousands of quilts and blankets to sick and deprived children across the UK each month.

We are also working on several large pieces of work for next year’s exhibition.

Tell us about the workshops you hold During the year we hold four or five workshops which last for a whole day. These take place in the Memorial Hall at Wellington Heath and concentrate on learning and improving a single technique.

The people leading the workshop are invited from across the UK and some of them are very well known. It’s a chance to learn something new and develop our skills further. At the start of June, Amanda Wright from The Weavers Gallery in Ledbury taught us a technique called “French Braid”, which is a particular way of setting out a quilt.

Our workshops are open to all, but our members have booking priority and receive 20 percent off the cost of the workshop. Places do sell out fast when the person leading it is well known.

Are you seeing an increasing interest in crafts like quilting?

I joined four years ago when there were around 25 members and we now have more than 40 members. Some people travel from Ross on Wye and Hereford to attend each month.

Each year we put on a small exhibition for Ledbury Community Day and there’s always a lot of interest from the public, particularly when they see the range of work we produce. There is something for all abilities. We are a friendly group and if people are interested in finding out more, they are welcome to come to one of our meetings before deciding whether to join us.

deep listening

I had been on retreat, a regular fixture of my summer. The group there had spent ten days watching coal-tits and swallows, flitting from the house to the barn, to the walnut tree; practicing Buddhism together; attending talks by our teacher; moaning about the mosquitoes and deer flies; and deeply listening to each other’s stories. It was that deep listening which brought the group into harmony, and allowed us to be at ease with ourselves and each other.

Deep listening to people is part of my life now: it’s part of my work both as a therapist and a priest, and, I hope, happens in my personal relationships too. However it wasn’t something that I always knew how to do.

Often when we are listening we are not really paying attention to what the other person is saying, but doing a whole host of other things instead. We might just be listening out for the something that relates to us, so that we can say ‘me too’, or share our own story – cutting into the conversation regardless. We might have already made up our mind about what’s been spoken about, and then just hear what agrees with what we already think. Sometimes people will say to me, “I followed your advice and did so and so”, and I think “I never suggested anything of the sort”. We hear what we expect to hear.

If our minds are rigid, or full of our own ideas,

A few days ago I drove home from my teacher’s old farmhouse in the centre of France. Twelve hours of travelling through sleepy rural villages, on motorways cutting through huge golden wheat fields, and lush green forests, on into suburbia, Paris, and then the flat landscape of Normandy, before the ferry back to Dover, and the feelings in the UK around Brexit. how can we expect to learn anything new?

Once, during the Meji era of Japan, a professor of Buddhism went to visit Nan-in, a great Zen master. They greeted each other, sat down, and Nan-in served tea in the elaborate Japanese way.

The professor talked and talked, filling the room with his own ideas. Nan-in poured tea into the professor’s cup, and kept pouring. The cup filled, and he kept pouring. The tea spilled over the rim.

“What are you doing?” the professor asked, “It’s full up – no more will go in.”

“The cup is just like you” Nan-in replied, “how do you expect to learn anything when you are so full of your own ideas?”

If we are the person being heard, having someone deeply listen to us brings a sense of being understood, a sense of deep connection, and the space we are given allows us to work things for out for ourselves.

If we are the person deeply listening, we are able to come closer to what is really true, move towards a state of being at ease with difference, and work towards ways of living together that are good for everyone.

Over the past few weeks, with conversations around the E.U. referendum, I have seen high feelings and failures to listen to each other. I have seen friendships strained, and arguments in real life and online.

At times like this, when we are feeling stirred up, or around others who are stirred up, it is even more important to engage in deep listening. Who is this person in front of me, really? What are their hopes? What insecurities lie underneath their strong feelings? It is a cliché to say ‘walk a mile in someone else’s shoes’ but how often do we really do this?

Deep listening doesn’t mean we always agree with each other– it simply means having a more spacious kind of conversation.

If we make space for understanding the other, rather than being a ‘too full cup of tea’, we can begin to build a sense community, and to move forwards together.

green fingers Bridget from Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall has some ideas for making your garden more attractive to pollinating insects.

As we are nearing the end of summer, there’s a chance for a break and a chance to enjoy the garden. This is a perfect time to watch insects such as bees and butterflies. Increasing numbers of people are interested in gardening for bees and other pollinators. It really demonstrates that people care about bees, and want to do their bit to help, by providing food and habitat.

This month I want to highlight some plants to include in the garden which provide food for pollinators all through the season. Due to variations of local climate and conditions the flowering times may be different. This will affect foraging and different species.

Bumble bees, with their big fluffy coats, are often seen out on a mild winter day foraging. It is important to include early flowering plants such as Lonicera fragrantissima (winter honeysuckle), Erica carnea (winter flowering heathers), Mahonia or Snowdrops.

When selecting plants for pollinators choose the more traditional varieties with single flowers, try to avoid big double flowers.

Winter/Spring: Mahonia, Genista, Lonicera, Clematis armandii, Ribies, Cornus mas, Hamamelis, Berberis, Erica carneas, Fritillary, Scilla, Gallanthus, Primulas, Crocus.

Spring/Summer: Digitalis, Phlox, Campanula, Symphytum, Penstemon, Gaura, Salvia, Honeysuckle, Clematis, Jasminum, Echium.

Summer/Autumn: Sedum, Lythrum, Lavandula, Scabious, Hyssop, Nepeta, Oreganum, Helianthus, Monarda, Verbena, Buddleja Autumn/Winter: Hedera, Viburnum, Cornus mas, Helleborous, Erica, Sarcococca, Mahonia, Jasminum nudiflorum.

These are just a few plants to include in your garden. Generally, a more diverse range of plants creates a better habitat.

In the nursery the large clumps of Oreganum Herrenhausen are always covered in honey bees, bumble bees and all sorts of butterflies, especially Tortoise shell and Coma. We have lots of nettle patches in the field on which the Peacock butterfly lay their eggs and we are then rewarded in summer by a Buddleja full of butterflies.

Insects such as bees provide an essential service by pollinating our crops. All over the world farmers are dependent on these little creatures to produce most of our food. With the decline of bumble bee populations, it is important that we all create a network of garden feeding stations for these amazing little creatures. So check your garden each month and monitor the bees, if there is a time with no flowers pop down to your local nursery and buy a flowering plant.

Remember not to be too ‘tidy’. Many creatures lay their eggs or overwinter in the garden, so leave piles of leaves. They can provide a habitat for overwintering butterfies such as the Coma as well as warm shelters for hedgehogs, toads, beetles and a host of other insects. Tiny bees can also overwinter in the hollow stems of plants.

Insects are a very important part of our eco system, without them we would have no soil or food!

Enjoy the last bit of summer and prepare to harvest all those fruit and vegetables for the winter.

ledbury scouts The Cubs are 100 years old! The centenary of Cub Scouts has been marked with events across the country, and cubs from the First Ledbury Scouts recently joined a gathering of 900 cubs in north Worcestershire.

T

he First Ledbury Scout Group itself is almost one hundred years old – established in 1919, it’s one of the oldest groups in the country. The group runs a busy programme of events including cycling, kayaking, camping, backpacking, climbing and even a recent water fight!

‘Our work couldn’t happen without our volunteers’ says Steve Kerridge from the Group Executive Committee. ‘After thirteen years, Carol Merryman recently stepped down as a Cub Scout leader.

To acknowledge the countless hours and huge commitment Carol gave over the years, we presented her with an engraved vase at our AGM’.

‘We are looking for someone to fill Carol’s shoes’ says Steve. ‘The cubs are very important to us as they eventually move on to become the scouts and the explorer scouts of the future.’

The group meets at its HQ in the Homend but space is limited. As the town of Ledbury expands

further, the group may find itself with even more young people to work with. They want to look at all the options, including the possibility of moving to a new site. ‘We are seeking people who could suggest what’s possible for an organisation like ours’ says Steve. ‘It’s not only about seeking funding or planning for a new building, but the knowledge to make sure we are ready for the next generation of local children.’

In the meantime, the group’s activities continue.

‘We are lucky to have some great local places for our outdoor activities’ says Steve. ‘As we go into the autumn we’ll have a new programme which includes a number of initiatives to help the local community.’

strawberry chase A perfect summer coctail treat, strawberry, basil and gin, subtlety sweet, a little tart and properly refreshing...

1. Slice strawberries and place in a small bowl with sugar, let sit in the fridge for 10 minutes to get the juices going.

2. Combine strawberries/ sugar and lemon juice in a blender and zap till smooth 3. Strain the mixture into a measuring cup 4. In a shot glass gently muddle two basil leaves and fill with ice 5. autumn in malvern festival Now in its 27th Year, the Autumn in Malvern Festival continues to bring world-class performers, art and discussion to the town during September and October.

This year, the brilliant young violinist Fenella Humphreys joins the chamber choir Aldwyn Voices, to present a programme of choral music and works for solo violin. Fenella performs internationally as a soloist and a number of eminent composers have written music especially for her to perform.

For her appearance in Malvern she will play Elagie, commissioned by the festival from the Scottish composer Rory Boyle. It is performed on 30th October in Great Malvern Priory.

Among the talks taking place is Light in the Darkness: The Malvern Conference 1941.

During the dark days of World War Two, eminent members of the clergy met in Malvern together with T.S. Eliot and Dorothy L. Sayers. Here, they discussed their vision for a post-war society based on social justice and he unification of Europe as a cooperative commonwealth.

Professor Christopher Baker presents his talk in the Great Hall at Malvern College on Friday 21st October at 7.30pm, entry is free.

Before that, the European Union Chamber Orchestra opens the festival at Great Malvern Priory on Saturday 17th September, when they play music by Bach, Faure, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Walton and Bartok. Another internationallyrenowned performer, the pianist Emma Abbate, will appear with The Tippet String Quartet as they play music by Dvorak and Benjamin Britten at Malvern College on Saturday 22nd October.

As in previous years, the festival marks The Big Draw, and on the morning of Saturday 15th October, free professional tuition is on offer at an event being held at South Worcestershire College on Albert Road North in Malvern.
