Pension Income: A Comfortable Balance

B

ack in April I wrote about the radical changes to pensions concerning the new pension freedoms, but I was also at pains to warn of the dangers associated with such freedom.

Striking a balance between the need for income whilst maintaining the new freedoms was never going to be easy, especially not without taking some risks, in particular investment risk. However, it has not taken long for some providers to design innovative products to bridge that gap.

These products are a cross between a traditional fixed term annuity and an income drawdown, otherwise known as a Protected Fixed Term Annuity.

What is a Protected Fixed Term Annuity?

Protected Fixed Term Annuities (PFTA) are in effect a fixed term annuity which provides a guaranteed level of income for a specific term but with the added benefit of still allowing access to a substantial part of the original fund, usually at the end of the fixed term, that being typically between 3 and 30 years, or indeed at any point in the term with some providers. Another benefit is that the fund can provide all the recently given freedoms to your spouse on your death or pass to your estate for distribution accordingly.

At the end of the term a guaranteed maturity amount is provided, with which a further PFTA can be purchased, cashed in, drawn down or alternatively, a conventional Lifetime Annuity or Investment Linked Annuity could also be purchased. Other options may also be allowable at this point dependent upon the pension legislation and product availability.

Income Levels There is no minimum or maximum level of income that can be taken, the level of income you take is very much up to you and subject to market conditions. However, the income will have an effect on the pot available at a future date, in other words, the more you take, the smaller the fund remaining. Guidance should be sought as to the best scenario for you. A PFTA can be free of investment risk. The income payments are guaranteed, as well as the guaranteed maturity amount available at the end of the term, which is known at the outset of the arrangement.

Exit strategies PFTA contracts expire at the end of the agreed term and offer the investor the opportunity to review and select the most appropriate income structure at that time. It is now possible to exit the contract during the fixed term but some providers will make a charge. Some offer the facility to switch to an enhanced lifetime annuity on ill health.

You may be eligible for an Enhanced Annuity if your health has worsened in the period between establishing the PFTA and the maturity date of the plan. This may lead to a significantly higher income.

summer of arts h.Art Saturday 12th until Sunday 20th September Artists and craftsmen across Herefordshire open their doors to visitors for Herefordshire Art Week, giving the chance to peek behind the scenes and see some of these talented people at work.

West Malvern Arts Festival Friday 21st- Sunday 23st August 2015 Dozens of artists will be displaying their work around West Malvern over a long weekend in August.

Now in its sixth year, a wide variety of art will be on show and much of it is also for sale.

Displayed in gardens, garages and a wide variety of properties, all the venues are along the B4232 road between Elim College and The Brewers Arms, in West Malvern (use WR14 4BB if navigating by sat nav!). Refreshments will be available at Elim Café, in St James’ Church, and at the Brewers Arms pub.

Bad weather is no obstacle as arrangements are made each year to place all exhibits under cover if it’s wet. Supporting attractions this year include music around the village and a vehicle cavalcade will be passing through as well.

In Cradley, several artists will be working at Blue Ginger Gallery where a marquee is being erected especially for the week.

Anybody thinking of learning a new skill or becoming an artist or designer themselves can join tuition at many of the venues and there are talks, demos and workshops taking place as well.

NEW PRESIDENT FOR COLWALL ROTARY The Rotary Club of Colwall in the Malvern Hills has Tony Brook as its new President. After growing up in Malvern Tony moved away for work but returned here 12 years ago. This small, friendly club of 24 members meets twice a month at the Malvern Hills Hotel and draws members from around the area.

They spend a lot of time helping community projects and they raise money to support both local, national and international charities and projects. The club’s next big fundraiser is on Sunday 9th August in West Malvern when their duckrace in a local stream promises an afternoon of family fun (see page 25).

ice cream sundae Take a tall glass (or a bowl or just a plate...) drop in some chopped Fudge (Ruby’s traditional for us) follow this with two/three good scoops of ice cream, we love the Kelsmor Gold and drizzle the lot with home made butterscotch sauce, if you’re feeling indulgent a crumbling of a Nest brownie over the top makes this a real treat...

Place the butter, golden syrup and both the soft brown and granulated sugar in a medium sized saucepan and heat slowly, when the ingredients have melted and dissolved and formed a liquid, continue to heat gently for a further 5 minutes then turn off the heat under the saucepan.

Now gradually stir in the double cream and a few drops of vanilla essence, stir for around 3 more minutes until the sauce is completely smooth.. done. Serve hot or cold, store in a jar in a cool place... Have fun, play around with toppings and ice creams - the sundae is not just for Sundays after all!

green fingers Down at Caves Folly in Colwall, Bridget’s found plenty of jobs to to in the garden.

Summer is now in full swing with the warm air full of the scents of sweet peas, roses, and lime flowers. Make time to enjoy the garden and just sit and enjoy the culmination of your hard work!

Unfortunately, between the odd glass of cider, there are still some jobs to do. In the vegetable garden you can start lifting the main crop potatoes and summer-prune trained fruit trees such as fans, espaliers and cordons.

Keep tomatoes moist. If they show bronze or yellow marks between the leaves they are probably lacking magnesium. Avoid overfeeding the plants and spray the leaves with epsom salts.

Harvest garlic, onions and shallots once the stems start to go yellow. Let the bulbs dry in the sun before storing. Sow oriental greens such as mizuna, mibuna and pak choi. They will be less prone to bolting from now onwards.

Harvest early-maturing apples such as Discovery and James Grieve. It’s best to use them soon after picking as they do not store well. Harvest beans, tomatoes and other veg that can be frozen or made into chutney.

In the ornamental garden now is the time to remove dead flower stalks off lavender plants and dead-head other herbaceous plants such as Penstemons and Geraniums. Check that the dry weather is not causing camellias and Rhododendrons to loose their spring buds. Give them a good soak.

There are hedges to clip, wisteria to prune (the current season’s growth to five or six leaves) and if you have a wildflower patch, cut it at the end of August and leave to dry for a few days to allow the seeds to drop.

Collect flower seeds to store for next year. Keep in a paper bag somewhere dry and cool. Take cuttings of Penstemon, Salvia, Diascia and other summer flowering half-hardy plants. Keep moist in a shady place. Next year might seem a long way off, but now is the time to order spring flowering bulbs.

I have been at the Ledbury poetry festival this week listening to Michael Palin read some of his poetry and limericks and so I am going to write some of my own! Making up limericks is great fun, why not have a go and make up some garden limericks, send them to the editor, sascha@allabout-local.com and you never know, she might publish them in one of the magazines!

a jewel in the crown It’s in your laptop or your tablet, in your smart phone, your car and countless other modern gadgets. In fact crystal growth is the technology that underpins practically all modern electronic devices. This miracle only exists thanks in part to the work of pioneering scientists who were based in Malvern. book highlighting this part of our local history has been written by Keith Barraclough and Donald Hurle, two of the men involved in that ground-breaking work.

The emergence of the cold war raised the importance of the scientific work taking place in Malvern and raised the importance of the Royal Radar Establishment (RRE) which was later renamed the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment (RSRE) Crystal growth became a key technology following the creation of the first transistor in 1947, which spurred scientists to find ways of creating crystals to be used in miniaturised circuits.

Making such structures was a key challenge, to which the scientists in Malvern made important contributions.

The processes and materials involved are complex but the book does an excellent job of explaining how it was done. Working from ‘K’ Block at the site on St. Andrews Road from 1958, new equipment was created allowing scientists to generate a range of crystals which could then be processed to create ever more complex electronic circuits.

This new book offers a revealing glimpse into the remarkable things achieved locally and its authors feel the book serves as a permanent record of the work carried out in Malvern during the cold war years.

art exhibition in ledbury Sara Amery’s striking painting of the Malvern Hills is among the many exhibits at the annual exhibition by Ledbury Art Society. live near the hills’ says Sarah, ‘and took my inspiration from walks along the ridge.

I used acrylic paint to create a colourful and cheerful image, with a path drawing the eye into the painting.’

Sarah’s been painting for around twenty years and has been a member of the Society for the past ten years. ‘It’s very friendly’ she says ‘with interesting demonstrations and a very enjoyable hobby.’

For this year’s exhibition, the society’s members have created atmospheric floral scenes, coastal scenes, animal portraits, skilled still life and local scenes. Everyone that visits the exhibition will be asked to vote for their favourite painting.

Most of the paintings featured in the exhibition are for sale along with cards and prints. There will also be a sales table of everything to do with art at seriously low prices and a raffle includes original works of art.

The Exhibition at The Burgage Hall on Church Lane in Ledbury is free and can be visited between 10am and 4.30pm on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September. All About...

The FRIENDS OF LEDBURY & DISTRICT HEALTHCARE

A well-known local charity has broadened its remit to help more people who are struggling with their health. The Friends of Ledbury Cottage Hospital supported the old Cottage Hospital in the Homend and provided equipment and training when the new Healthcare Centre opened 13 years ago. It’s moving into a new phase and one of its trustees, Dr David Lloyd, tells us more.

How did this change come about?

As a result of discussions with the Charities Commission, the Friends amended their name and are now able to consider applications from a much wider field. We are known as The Friends of Ledbury and District Healthcare, our funds will support not only the hospital in Ledbury but also healthcare work in Ledbury and the wider area, taking in villages including Cradley, Colwall, Bosbury, Mathon and parts of West Malvern.

Who will you be helping?

The object is to help in the relief of patients who are sick, convalescent, disabled, infirm or in need of assistance. In addition the charity will facilitate the relief of sickness in the locality by promoting the efficient performance of their duties by healthcare workers.

We take each case on face value; we are not a substitute for social services but aim to provide something over and above. We might be able to provide peripheral equipment that helps with day to day living. For example, we recently contributed to the purchase of equipment in the homes of two local residents.

How does the charity raise funds?

When the new Community Health and Care Centre opened in Ledbury in 2002 there was a big fundraising push. At the time I was Practice Manager at the Surgery and The Friends were extremely generous. They gave a large amount of money which helped with the development

of of the Physiotherapy Suite. It helped with the provision of new X-ray and ultrasound machines as well as many other items of equipment.

Support was also given to many members of staff in their extended training courses.

Today the charity’s income is maintained by donations including bequests left in people’s wills.

We continue to be very grateful for any donation whether large or small.

Oliver!

This August, Malvern Theatres Young Company is delighted to present its fourth production: Lionel Bart’s musical version of Charles Dickens’s classic novel Oliver! The theatre is proud to announce that Andy Reiss, from the Beyond the Barricade Company, will be returning to the venue to direct this iconic musical.

Set in the cobbled Victorian streets of London, orphaned Oliver Twist sets out from the workhouse, searching for a home, a family, and - most importantly – for love. Cold, exhausted and in need of help, Oliver is picked up by a boy named the Artful Dodger before being welcomed into the gang of child pickpockets, masterminded by the criminal Fagin.

Whilst watching the child pickpockets swipe a handkerchief from an elderly gentleman, Oliver is left feeling horrified and runs off. Oliver is then rescued by a kind and wealthy gentlemen, much to the dismay of Fagin’s jealous sidekick, Bill Sykes.

Last year’s Young Company production of Jesus Christ Superstar received standing ovations and this year’s show promises the same.
