Investing...facts versus fears

T

he first two months of 2016 have certainly tested investor nerves, and whilst it’s not quite annus horribilis yet, there has been no hiding place with virtually every asset, sector, indeed country, being adversely affected.

Continued concerns about Chinese growth and a weaker global economy have been fanned by new worries over central banks’ ability to stimulate growth. I have no problem with going on record to say I believe this is one of the most spectacular disconnections between prices and fundamentals, the global economy is still growing, but markets are pricing a global recession, and I believe this is still highly unlikely. That said, the key is to remain invested, and to ensure diversification and risk management. When the upturn comes, you need to be ready to take full advantage of it.

Here are some tips to ensure your portfolio is ready.

Asset Choice The single best way to protect your portfolio is to spread your risk across several different types of investments. There are many different assets in which you can invest, each with different risk characteristics. While the risks attributable to assets cannot be avoided, when managed collectively as part of a diversified portfolio, they can be diluted.

Company specific risk One of the best things you can do is to diversify within the assets. For example, you can spread your investments into different shares or bonds to ensure your portfolio is exposed to lots of different types of investments rather than, for example, having shares in just a few large companies.

Sector exposure It is just as important to spread your investments across different sectors. For many reasons, companies within different sectors perform in very different ways. By diversifying across sectors you can access shares with high growth expectations,

without over-exposing your portfolio as a whole to undue risk.

Geographical Location It’s natural to feel more comfortable investing in your home market, but this is not necessarily the most sensible option. Because investments in different geographical economies generally operate in different economic cycles, they have less than perfect correlation.

Investment funds Keeping track of lots of individual assets can be a daunting task. A much simpler solution is to buy investment funds containing those assets and leave the diversification worries to professional management where one can easily spread investments across hundreds of different assets.

Risk profiling There are now many sophisticated risk profile questionnaires and online tools available to financial advisers to help measure your appetite for risk more precisely, and even your tolerance for loss. The more accurate your risk profile, the greater the chance of recommending the most suitable investments for your needs.

will be appearing in concert on 7th May in the beautiful setting of Mathon Church. The choir, which was formed in 1922, is one of the foremost of its kind in the area and regularly gives concerts for good causes. Proceeds from this concert will be donated to the Mathon Church Fabric Fund.

A performance with a difference, as Ledbury Amateur Dramatic Society brings The Master’s House to life. Based around household preparations for a very important visitor, Master Cowper and his staff walk the halls once more in a promenade performance.

2. multicolour fun run There’s a fun run with a difference taking place in West Malvern this April. The Malvern Multicolour Fun Run follows a course through the grounds of the Elim Estate, with runners getting covered in brightly coloured biodegradable powder paints along the way! You can sign up for 1, 2 or 3 laps of a 2 kilometre circuit, and help raise money for a charity of your choice or for ELIM. The event takes place on Saturday 23rd April from 10am and continues through the day.

Garden Inspiration

A garden celebrating Malvern’s water heritage will be one of the show gardens at this year’s RHS Malvern Spring Festival. Called ‘The Water Spout’, it’s being designed and created by Christian Dowle who runs Garden Inspiration, a garden design and landscaping company based in Colwall. The choice of plants is based around native species found on the Hills.

‘All the plants I am using come from this country and in particular from one nursery in Hereford’ says Christian. ‘I’m also using locally sourced sweet chestnut to create a shelter at one end of the garden and a paling fence.’

Christian has been involved with many RHS Gold winning gardens – his father regularly exhibited at RHS Chelsea for many years and the family has an enviable reputation for their award winning designs.

WESTONS VISITOR CENTRE Whatever the weather throws at us this Spring, Weston’s Cider in Much Marcle offers days out for all ages. The play park for younger visitors is open daily from Good Friday onwards (March 25th) and there are also daily tours around the Cider Mill as well as a Cider shop where adults can sample some of the ciders and perries. Various Shop offers are always available.

There’s a Tea Room serving fresh cream teas and your favourite snacks as well as the Scrumpy House Restaurant, offering delicious meals using fresh local produce. There are a number of special events too – Weston’s is part of Blossomtime in Putley, a special weekend on 1st and 2nd May, there is Open Farm Weekend on Sunday 5th June (10am until 4pm) and then in the autumn there’s a weekend of events for The Big Apple (8th and 9th October) and Harvest Suppers on 21st and 28th October.

SCULPTOR CARO BULBERRY Local sculptor Caro Burberry is facing a series of challenges this year to help raise thousands of pounds for Acorns Children’s Hospice. Caro, who lives in West Malvern, will be learning to speak Italian, learning to drum, and singing in an a capella group which will give a performance at the end of this year. She’s also taking lessons in Falconry, with Flash, a Harris Hawk. ‘I did my first flight training with him last week’ says Carol. ‘It always looks so easy at displays but it needs a huge level of trust for a wild hawk to do this.’

Acorns Children’s Hospice is encouraging others to set their own challenges and help raise money to support their work with children with life limiting conditions.

COLWALL PLAYERS PERFORMANCE The Colwall Players are busy rehearsing for an upcoming performance of The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht. A morality masterpiece, the play powerfully demonstrates Brecht’s pioneering theatrical techniques, and yet is also described as Brecht’s most cheerful and charming play, and, unusually for Brecht, the play has a happy ending. Several plots run through it, all merging at the conclusion.

green fingers At Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget Evans is drawing inspiration from two gardens Spring is now with us in all its glory. Each day there are new plants coming to life, the hidden winter buds of perennials showing colour and alpines triggered by the longer daylight hours pushing up their flowers.

There are so many jobs to do at this time of year that it can seem impossible to keep up with it all.

Try to stand back and make time to appreciate this abundance of beauty - sit in the garden or go for a walk.

There are lots of gardens to visit in our area too.

Have a look at the NGS website and have an afternoon off. Last year I visited two fabulous gardens in the Forest of Dean. They are both near each other and well worth the trip. Driving through the Wye Valley is a beautiful prelude to the visit!

The first garden is at Wyndcliffe Court in St. Arvans near Chepstow. The court is a Grade II Listed country house and gardens in the Arts and Crafts style. The gardens, designed by Henry Avray Tipping, overlook the Severn and Bristol Channel. The formal gardens are planted in a soft cottage garden style which creates an intimate atmosphere as you stroll through the terraces and sunken gardens and enjoy the views.

The new owners have worked hard at restoring the walled kitchen garden. Fresh vegetables and fruit are used in the cafe and to sold to visitors.

In the summer there is an exhibition of sculptures which are laid out all around the garden which is truly inspiring.

• Cut back summer flowering clematis to about a metre from the ground.

• Mulch or feed roses.

All About...

malvern walking festival With more than forty walks ranging from a stroll to a 60 mile hike, there’s something for everyone at the Malvern Walking Festival. Derek Starkey has been involved since it started and tells us more.

How do you decide on a programme of walks?

The planning begins in September when we all put our ideas together to produce the programme with the intention of printing the brochure, updating the website and beginning the publicity by the end of the year. We look for local interest and over the years we have developed the festival according to the ability and needs of the people who come along. Some people wanted something more ambitious which is where our 60 mile walks come from. We even had people who wanted 20 miles or more in a day, so we introduced an end to end walk of the hills and back again. We’ve done 35 miles along the Worcestershire Way in a day, which is well supported. Some people just want to walk two miles and hear the dawn chorus, or a walk around the town learning about its history, so we make sure we always meet the demand for themed walks.

Who comes along?

Together with the district council we also do the Malvern Munch, part of the Food Festival, where we take people on a six mile walk with stops to sample local food and drink.

We have quite a few local people from the immediate area as well as people from Gloucester and in the future we’d like to push towards Birmingham. In the past we had a lady form America as well as people coming from Wales. Some return year after year and stay in the town which is what we want. We want to attract tourists who might stay for two or three days and spend money locally. There’s a feeling in the local tourist industry that visitors might pull up in a car park, walk a few hundred yards on the hills before returning to their vehicle and driving home. Our aim is to take people on the hills and show them paths and places they might never otherwise discover.

How did the Walking Festival start?

What’s the future of the festival?

We began in 2002 and originally everything took place over one weekend. We had no more than ten walks, starting and ending in Malvern, whereas now we have in excess of forty walks over nine days. For the first two or three years things were patchy but Robin Elt was instrumental in getting things going, and arranging our first brochures. Ray Roberts created a website for us and took on a coordinator role, making a big difference. Although the festival is now larger, we have stuck with the original intention which is to attract tourists to the area. Today, I believe we stand up against any of this country’s best walking festivals.

We’ve only got a future if new people can help with the organising. I am now 75 and several other members of the organising committee are of a similar age and we need some successors!

We also welcome new walk leaders, our pool of dedicated volunteers have been with us for some time but we’re always looking for new ones, so if you’re interested then please get in touch.

Local Book

gallipoli 1915 Staring out from photographs taken more than a century ago are the faces of local men who went off to fight in the Great War. For many years these photos were on display in the church at Coddington before they were spotted by David Hodgson who helped record and conserve them. This work set him on a trail to uncover these men’s stories which has resulted in a new book.

M

any of the young recruits were still teenagers. As they joined up, their occupations were listed - gardener, gamekeeper, carpenter, saddler as well as many agricultural labourers. David found addresses for many of them, including three brothers from the Beatley family who worked at Woofields Farm on the edge of Coddington.

‘Many of these lads were probably working for a pittance on local farms, living in tenanted cottages, and living hard lives’ David says. ‘It must have been quite something on the day they told their landlords and employers they were leaving.’

By chance, one of the men in the photographs was the great-uncle of a customer at David’s butchers shop in Colwall, who mentioned she didn’t have a photo of him. David showed her the photo of Great Uncle Fred, which led him to a written account of local men’s experiences in the First World War. The account, together with other material, has now been turned into the new book. Called ‘Gallipoli 1915, We Were There’, it outlines experience of the men who joined the Herefordshires and went on to fight in the Middle East.

Fred Price was wounded by a sniper’s bullet and sent to England on a hospital boat, then returned to Egypt where he saw further action. He was captured by Turkish forces after being badly wounded by a grenade. Over following weeks he was moved between hospitals and internment camps before eventually making it home to Coddington just before Christmas.

Another man, Walter Greening, was injured while carrying out trenching work. He was treated in hospital before returning to the front line. He then experienced horrendous conditions in the trenches

before suffering further injuries and a diagnosis of ‘shell shock’. His state of mental health was considered so bad that he was discharged from duty and spent time at a hospital in Glasgow.

‘These were men who never complained’ says David, ‘they just shut up and got on with it.’ Official records show that some twenty years after the war ended, many of the men had returned to the local area and picked up their working lives. Both Fred Price and Walter Greening made it back to Coddington – Walter worked on local fruit farms and Fred found quarrying work.

Among other stories and artefacts uncovered are signed pages from a hymnal which belonged to Harry Hill. The book was lost at Dardanelles in Turkey in 1915 but was found and returned safely to his family a year later. During his research, David met a woman whose great grandfather served with his son. As a shell exploded, the son shouted ‘watch out dad’ only to turn and find his father had been hit – and had simply vanished.

spring clean for your head

By Satya Robyn As the Spring sun gets stronger it starts to shine into all our dusty corners. This can be a cue for us to get out the duster and give things a more thorough clean. It can also be an opportunity to start getting rid of all that clutter that builds up and up. Books we’re never going to read, clothes we never wear any more, that thingumajig we thought might come in handy…

pringtime also gives us an opportunity to look at some of the dusty old things we’ve been carrying around in our heads.

These might be simmering resentments against people or companies that take up our time and energy, decisions we’ve been putting off, people we’ve been avoiding because there’s something we should have said but we haven’t, feelings of grief, annoyance or disappointment, and all kinds of other head furniture that takes up space and adds to our general levels of stress.

There are a couple of reasons for things in our head getting dusty or mouldy. One is that, just like cleaning, sometimes it’s easier to ignore the things that need our attention rather than face them. And it is easier – in the short term. This is especially true if they are complicated or painful things, like the terrible mess in the cupboard under the stairs, or if we don’t know what to do about them, like the plug that needs changing.

It’s also more difficult if we’re feeling low on energy, or if we have lots of other complicated or tiring things happening in our lives.

The other reason is that, as human beings, we are strongly habit-forming. This habit-forming often works to our advantage - it allows us to drive to work without having to think consciously about every turn of the wheel, or to deal with social situations easily by putting on our usual ‘social persona’. It also has the disadvantage of lumbering us with habits we’d rather not hold on to. Responding to feeling insecure by using sarcasm? Eating chocolate when we’re

bored? This Spring we might want to identify an unhealthy habit that has outlived its purpose and find an alternative coping strategy instead.

If you like the sound of a Head Spring Clean, start by putting some time aside to take stock of the inside of your head. You might want to make a list of all the habits you want to let go of, the things you’ve been avoiding, anything that feels like it draws energy or is taking up space. Then be realistic about what you’d like to tackle. If your house gets into a mess, it’s best to start with a small corner of a room – choose one or three things from your list and start there.

If you feel daunted, get some support from a friend. You could also book an appointment with an appropriate professional depending on your head clutter - a dentist if you’ve been putting off getting a check-up, a therapist if you have a problem in a relationship etc. Above all, remember that the dust might have been gathering for many many years, and so it might take some time to clean it out. Be kind to yourself, and enjoy the results of your Spring Clean.

ELGAR CONCERT Ledbury Choral Society will be performing one of Edward Elgar’s most impressive works in an ambitious concert this April. Together with Bromyard Choral Society and the Bromyard Sinfonia, they will perform The Kingdom at Hereford Cathedral on 30th April.

It’s not the first time the two choirs have joined forces. ‘In November 2014 we held a successful evening at Malvern Theatres where we sang Verdi’s Requiem’ says Sue Embrey from Ledbury Choral Society. ‘The concert was very well supported and we raised £1,800 for Help for Heroes and The Salvation Army.’

This next concert will raise money for Christian Aid and is conducted by Sir Richard Mynors.

The four soloists are Lucy Bowen (soprano), Louise Crane (mezzo-soprano), Jon Weller (tenor) and Paul Mocroft (bass-baritone). Elgar wrote The Kingdom during his years of living in Hereford, and this performance marks 110 years since its premiere. ‘If you love Elgar’s music this

is definitely a concert to go to’ says Sue. ‘It is sustained and passionate, showing Elgar’s genius and love for great choral works.’

well dressing festival May bank holiday weekend The theme for this year’s Well Dressing Festival is ‘Friendship - L’Amitié’ which celebrates Malvern’s twinning with the French spa town of Bagnères-deBigorre. round 40 wells, springs and spouts will be transformed by dressers for this year’s festival over the early May Day bank holiday weekend. ‘This is a fantastic theme and we are expecting to see all manner of creative interpretations’ according to Lionel Shorstone, who has been involved with the festival for years.

Well dressing in the area is thought to date back to the 12th century, with records indicating that Holy Well in Malvern Wells was dressed annually. From 1870 Royal Well in West Malvern was regularly dressed, and the Wyche Spring was also dressed by local residents in the 20th century.

Many volunteers return year after year to decorate particular wells, but new well dressers are always welcome and a meeting is being held on Monday 4th April for anybody who is interested. Organised by Malvern Spa Association, the festival sees all kinds of activities including minibus trips to view the decorations and water blessings by different faith groups.

As always the Malvern Tourist Information Centre in Church Street will have information for visitors, telling them how to visit the various sites.

There’s also a Facebook page called ‘Malvern Well Dressing’ which encourages dressers and visitors to share photos of their preparations and decorated sites in full glory.

Judges tour all of the entries, with the winners competing for gold, silver and bronze rosettes.

This year will see the return of the ‘People’s Award’ where members of the public are encouraged to visit the various sites and vote for their favourite children and adult entry.

Wells will be dressed on Friday 29th April and then decorations will be left in place over the Bank Holiday Weekend and into the following week.

wild garlic pate The local wild garlic* is springing into life. Use these seasonal leaves to make a quick and easy pate.

1. Wash the leaves and pat dry. Or blanch them in boiling water, and then pat dry.

2. Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend.

3. Season, more lemon juice could be added to taste. A small amount of water may be added to achieve a dip-like consistency.

Serves 4 Ready in 10 min

Ingredients • 1 tin white beans e.g. butter, cannelini • handful of wild garlic (approx25g) • 1 tbsp olive/ rapeseed oil • 2 tbsp lemon juice • salt and pepper (to taste)

4. Garnish with fresh herbs. Serve with fresh crusty bread or oatcakes. * Only pick if you are sure you have the right plant, the smell should make it obvious.

ALE HOUSE & CHURCH FESTIVAL The organisers of this year’s Colwall Church and Ale House Festival tell us about their plans.

The first festival two years ago was such fun and such a great success that there is going to be another in 2016. The big Festival Day is on Saturday July 16th. ‘This time there will be even more fun opportunities for people to get involved in the Festival’ says Phil Hitchen, who is Team Leader for the Festival. ‘We would like to talk to anyone who has a cause they hold dear, or who wants to support the festival and be part of the Festival buzz in some way.’

This year’s Festival will include favourite attractions from the first festival. The Classic Car Cavalcade rides again and the Food and Drinks Fair will be back. This time around the Arts Exhibition in the church will feature more of our fabulous local crafts and artists. There will be more activities in the Fun and Games field and more rides for children. And a special attraction that the organisers are keeping under wraps until later.

easter chocolate biscuit cake Melt chocolate, butter and syrup. Using your hands, break the biscuits to have nice big chunks and add to the melted mixture. Add any extras such as a dessert spoon of cocoa powder, 100g of chopped nuts, glace cherries, mixed fruit, coconut...whatever takes your fancy.

Ingredients 125g chocolate ( I use dark Chocolate) 75g butter 250g Biscuits 1 tablespoon of syrup

Spread into a baking tin lined with baking paper or cling film - a 6� square tin for thick slabs, an 8� round tin for thinner slices - and leave in a cool place to set, ideally overnight.

Cut into slab or slices with a warm knife... decorate with mini eggs, or crumbled chocolate flake... enjoy!

travels with my aunt

Four actors will take on over 20 characters in this hilarious mad cap dash around the world with Henry Pulling.

He is a retired suburban bank manager with a penchant for dahlias.

He meets his eccentric Aunt Augusta at what he supposes to be his mother’s funeral. She persuades him to abandon his dahlias and travel with her to Brighton, Paris, Istanbul and across the world to Paraguay.

Through Aunt Augusta, a veteran of hotel bedrooms and shady associates, Henry joins a shifty twilight society of pot smoking hippies, war criminals, men from the CIA and hard core art smugglers. To his aunt’s great delight, he finds himself coming alive as he puts his former dull and predictable life behind him.
