For this month's magazine, we visited the Museum of Royal Worcester to see some of the work going on to conserve and display the company's archive. Together with staff, a team of volunteers is painstakingly working through old documents, drawings and books to clean them up, repair damage, and catalogue them so that future generations can truly appreciate how important the production of porcelain was in Worcester's past.

We also met a husband and wife, who together with their children and other talented musicians, have started a group.

Drawing from the huge range of folk music, but with their classical training, their music really is amazing. You can read about Kings and Folk on Page 26.

museum of royal worcester The displays at The Museum of Royal Worcester are a breathtaking reminder of a company that was once famed the world over. As well as the many examples of exquisitely decorated porcelain, is an important archive that is being painstakingly catalogued and restored.

n a room at the museum away from the public gaze, is the museum's archive.

Row upon row of leather bound books line the shelves, from pattern books to order ledgers and other historic documents.

'There's a wealth of material here' say the collection's archivist, Sue Fairchild. 'Especially good are the pattern books which are an amazing resource.' These books, dating back a century or more, contain detailed drawings, dimensions and decoration used to make the company's dinner services, vases and figurines.

Also in the archive are the company's old order books and records of employment. 'It's a good insight into what happened here' says Sue, 'and reveals much about the life of the employees and the social history of Worcester.' Work to conserve these books and documents falls to a small but dedicated team of volunteers, painstakingly cleaning and repairing the old documents.

On the day we visit, three women are seated around a table, using an array of tools from pony hair brushes to special sponges, to clean up documents. They carry out other work including the repair of torn pages, strengthening damaged book spines and re-threading broken book bindings.

This is highly skilled work for these members of The National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS). 'A small group of us is trained in paper repairs' says Isobel Nicholls as she works. 'It is delicate, specialised work and every year we receive refresher training. This is rewarding work as when repairing something, you are protecting it for future generations.'

'You never know what you'll find' says Ruth Reeves, another of the team. Last month, a

book opened for conservation work revealed illustrations of eighteenth century fashions from revolutionary France. The book has been on display in the museum for visitors to see - after decades of sitting on a shelf it has been restored and can be marvelled at once again.

The Museum of Royal Worcester is open Monday to Saturday between 10am until 5pm until the end of October, and between 10am and 4pm from November onwards. It can be found on Severn Street close to the cathedral.

There are more than 10,000 pots in the museum's collection, and to date only a tiny amount have ever been photographed.

As a result, the '10,000 to 1 Appeal' has been launched to raise ÂŁ20,000 to allow this important collection to be properly photographed and catalogued. As little as ÂŁ10 will allow the photographing of five items and donations are welcomed.

why health is nothing like crime reduction

By Tracy Reck, Personal Fitness Coach in Worcester In my old life, I used to manage a Crime Reduction Partnership. I know, right? Hard to imagine. Then, I used to present reports at board meetings, manage budgets and deliver projects to reduce crime. Now I bounce around in a gym, talk to people about their eating habits and present workshops about health.

nd smile a lot more. Life is interesting how it brings you round to where you're supposed to be, huh?

Anyway, the relevance here is how we use to measure things in Community Safety. I remember we were always hot on the tail of outcomes constantly looking for outcomes. We hated outputs.

People would always try and use outputs when talking about a project's success or when applying for project funding, but it just didn't cut it. Even though outputs were lovely, tangible, measurable things, outcomes were all that mattered.

Outputs are all numbers, for example the number of young people engaged, the number of football sessions delivered or numbers of window locks fitted. We didn't want those because they didn't count towards our Home Office targets. We needed outcomes, like a percentage reduction in disorder incidents, fewer burglaries in a particular area or an increase in perceptions of safety.

These things were like the holy grail. Really hard to measure. Really hard to attribute to any particular project we might run. Subject to a time lag between what we might do and when the data was collected.

But we pushed on, trying our best to plait fog and give the Home Office the information they wanted.

Thank goodness I don't still work there - for oh, so many reasons, but also because now one of the biggest things I do is try to stop people, yes, STOP them, getting completely obsessed with outcomes.

In health, the outputs are SO much more valuable.

I want my clients to focus on their key outputs like

the number of exercise sessions done, the number of veg portions eaten or the number of times negative self talk was swapped for self compassion or perhaps even the number of hours spent meditating.

Does that sound odd? Are you thinking that surely the most important thing would be the outcomes, like weight lost, strength gained or body composition changes? Well, they are important, sure. But they are not MORE important. When it comes to health, the better your outputs, the better your outcomes.

That's not true in crime reduction. It's too multifaceted and there are too many factors not in the control of the agencies who seek to reduce it. But whereas health, too, is multi-faceted, the great thing is that all those outputs ARE in your control.

Use your outcomes to drive your performance in your outputs, but remember the outputs will drive the achievement of your outcomes.

Even out here in the wonderful world of health improvement, there's a tendency to give weight to outcomes much more than outputs. I reckon that needs flipping around. Outputs are the key.

Local Talent

I’m Dave Webber and I present a weekly music show on Choice Radio, the service for Worcestershire Royal Hospital. This month I'd like to tell you about a group started by two talented musicians who also happen to be husband and wife.

Claire King and her husband Ian are both classically trained musicians but with a broad interest in many different kinds of music.

Claire plays the violin, and growing up in Scotland, she learned to play a lot of traditional Scottish jigs and reels. Ian grew up singing in the choir at Hereford Cathedral before he became the organ scholar at St Peter's College, Oxford and received a first class honours degree in Music.

Together, their love of music has turned into something very special. With Ian composing the music and playing piano, and Claire on fiddle, their band Kings and Folk have created a very unique sound. Often joined by other musicians, the current line up includes their son David on djembe drum and local flautist/whistle player Helen Izod; with regular guest singer Hattie Amos from Worcester and percussionist Steve Martin from Cheltenham often joining them in concerts.

Their music can't really be put into a category, and I will struggle to explain it, but it has been described as classically influenced arrangements of traditional music. Some of the folk tunes come from Britain, Ireland and Eastern Europe, but with their own clever arrangements. There are plenty of original songs at their gigs as well.

Ian has written and performed a lot of music himself. Together with Chris Jaeger from Worcester Live he wrote 'A Worcestershire Song Cycle' for the Three Choirs Festival in 2011.

He's recently been commissioned to write a new choral work which will be performed at next year's Three Choirs Festival and broadcast live on Radio 3.

Always open to new influences, Ian was introduced to traditional music during visits to Claire's family in Scotland. 'Christmas and New Year were always an excuse for a family get together' she says, 'my dad would get the guitar out and we'd have a play and a sing song.'

Kings and Folk's latest CD, called 'Branching Out', was released at the end of last year. Claire says it took them several years to record, edit and produce. 'It took all our spare time and weekends finding the time to record - some tracks live, some tracks laying down each instrument individually'.

'We were also fortunate enough to have some wonderful guests record with us on the album including vocalist Colette Todd, a former soloist in world tours of Riverdance and Lord of the Dance and David Cowell, a guitarist and cellist from Malvern. Everyone put their heart and soul into it.'

Two of the tracks on the CD were recorded at Peter Gabriel's Realworld Studios in Wiltshire, as a result of the group winning the Bath Folk Festival New Shoots Competition in 2013. The album was engineered and co-produced by Ian and Claire's son James, who is one-half of the dance-music duo NVOY. Now based in London, they have just landed themselves an album deal with Black Butter Records.

Kings and Folk put a lot of time and effort into playing live and perform at many local festivals and concerts around the Midlands. Word is spreading fast and they get bookings all over the place.

roots roast chicken dinner There cannot be anything more comforting and satisfying than a proper Roast Chicken Dinner!

Indeed nothing quite brings on the ooh's and ahh's in our house more than the aromas of such a dinner cooking.

A popular Sunday lunch "go to" or a midweek treat to boost energy levels until the weekend ‌ Roast Chicken has it all!

Get your oven hot to start with, 200C.Prepare some root vegetables, peeling and chunking as you go, toss in a little sunflower oil and season.

Prepare the bird (if it's one of ours don't forget the giblets will be packed in the cavity, essential for good gravy).

Place the bird in a large roasting tray (big enough to leave some space for roasting veggies). Peel and quarter an onion, halve a lemon, stuff them inside the cavity with a handful of herbs.

Sage is a traditional herb for roasting with chicken, but parsley and thyme will also flavour the bird well, a combination is ideal!

A Roots Chicken has plenty of fat under the skin so oil isn't needed, but do scrunch sea salt and pepper over the breast and legs that will crisp up during roasting.

Allow to cook for a few minutes (cooking out the starch) and then you can let down the gravy with stock from boiled giblets, vegetable cooking water or maybe a splash of wine. Keep whisking until the gravy thickens a little. Enjoy!

Last of all pour a mug of water into the bottom of the tray which I find helps to keep the bird moist during cooking and gets the gravy off to a good start too.

Place the bird in the hot oven for 20 minutes. This is a good point at which to surround it with your prepared veggies for roasting. Turn the oven down to 180C and cook for a further 30 minutes per kg plus 20 minutes.

Once cooked do allow the chicken to rest somewhere warm for 10 minutes or so before carving. This will be enough time to make the gravy with the delicious juices in the roasting tin.

With a heavy bottomed roasting tin this is easily done on the stove. Mix 3 teaspoons of cornflour and a good pinch of mustard powder with a little cold water and tip into the cooking juices. With the heat on low use a small whisk to bring the gravy together.

contact the elderly Contact the Elderly is charity that organises tea parties for groups of older people in Worcester who live alone. These social events offer a regular and vital friendship link every month. Catherine Templeton is the charity’s joint co-ordinator for Worcester and tells us more.

Do you need volunteers or other help?

We hold regular afternoon tea gatherings at the house of a host. One of our hosts is a ‘vintage’ entertainer and entertains our guests with a sing-a-long. Mostly though it is just afternoon tea at a host’s house and the ladies (for we have no men at the moment) enjoy catching up with each other. Each guest receives a birthday cake and a card in their birthday month.

Like most charities, we are always on the look out for more volunteers. We particularly need hosts.

The criteria for hosting is that you have space to seat all the guests, have easy access into the house and have a downstairs toilet. The host provides the tea and cakes.

Occasionally we do something different - for the last three years, Worcester Lions Club have given us tickets to the pantomime in Worcester.

Our Christmas tea party is a very special event always hosted by the same couple, who lay on a wonderful, old fashioned, Christmas tea. We sing carols round the piano and everybody leaves with a small present. It is a highlight for the drivers, never mind the guests!

Who comes along and what do they get out of it?

We have nine guests at the moment who are nearly all well into their nineties and for them it is something to look forward to every month. For some, it is their only outing. They know that they will be picked up from their door and brought home again by usually the same driver each month. In this way a friendship develops between the driver and guest. Friendships develop between the guests and some will phone each other during the month.

We like to have a pool of drivers so that we can always find the three or four that we need for each tea party. It is more convenient if the driver has a four door car, but it’s helpful even if they can only take one person. All our drivers have DBS clearance. The drivers donate not just their time but also their petrol costs.

It would be lovely if we could get the occasional donation, such as we have had from Worcester Lions, to fund extra outings.

What do volunteers enjoy about helping?

For me, it is something that does not take up very much time, but it can make a big difference to a lonely and isolated older person. Seeing the obvious enjoyment our guests get from our afternoons makes it worthwhile.

A new play by Mike Bartlett Directed by Rupert Goold with Whitney Mosery Following a sold-out run at the Almeida Theatre and a critically acclaimed West End run, the award-winning new play King Charles III will be coming to Malvern Theatres from Monday 2nd to Saturday 7th November.

The Queen is dead: after a lifetime of waiting, Prince Charles ascends the throne. A future of power. But how to rule?

Mike Bartlett’s play explores the people underneath the crowns, the unwritten rules of our democracy, and the conscience of Britain’s most famous family.

Robert Powell will play the role of King Charles alongside Penelope Beaumont, Jennifer Bryden, Richard Glaves, Dominic Jephcott, Lucy Phelps, Ben Righton, Giles Taylor, Parth Thakerar, Tim Treloar, Beatrice Walker and Paul Westwood.

This year King Charles III has been awarded the Olivier Award, Critics’ Choice and South Bank Sky Arts Award for Best New Play.

King Charles III will be appearing at Malvern Theatres from Monday 2nd to Saturday 7th November.
