Happy New Year!

I won’t make predictions here for 2015, but I can tell you about some of the many things to enjoy around the city in January and February.

Firstly, the Swan Theatre is celebrating its golden anniversary. After a New Year’s eve party at the theatre, there will be many more events happening, and on January 29th there’s the launch of a book that outlines the stories making up the theatre’s history. See Page 28 for more information.

Over February half-term, the Love Worcester Heritage Festival returns with a packed programme of events, exhibitions and entertainment at local museums and historic locations in and around Worcester. You can pick up a leaflet with all the details from The Worcester Visitor Centre at The Guildhall.

A Family Mystery Unravelled Revealing the secrets of your family’s history is a bit like putting together a jigsaw, piece by piece. Sometimes you struggle to find the right piece, but in the end a previously unseen picture emerges.

HOW TO RESEARCH YOUR FAMILY HISTORY Perhaps the most important advice is to start by talking to other members of your family. Although often incomplete, a lot of useful information could be gained.

Using your own birth certificate as a starting point, it is possible to work your way back through your family tree by using birth, marriage and death records, parish registers and the census records.

After that, a visit to Worcestershire’s archive at The Hive will give you access to thousands of documents as well as online databases.

This is something Jacquie Hartwright from Worcester knows all about. She decided to try and find out more about an old writing box with the engraving ‘M.A.D. 1830’ which was handed down from her husband’s grandfather.

Trying to navigate through the archive can be difficult at first, but fortunately there are introductory courses held at The Hive.

There is a charge for courses, but access to the archive is free and available to all.

After extensive research the secret of the box was revealed. It’s not a dramatic story, but it paints a picture of how families lived in and around Worcester in the 1800s.

The internet has revolutionised the research of family history, but your research shouldn’t be confined to sitting behind a computer. There are several family history groups locally which offer help and advice to members as well as holding regular meetings and other events: See:

Using local marriage records, Jacquie discovered that Albert Hartwright married Minnie Mason in 1899. Minnie’s initials didn’t fit the engraving on the box, but a newspaper marriage announcement from 1869 revealed that Albert’s mother Fanny came from the Diaper family.

Fanny had lost her father at a young age, and the 1851 census shows her mother running her late husband’s bricklaying business and raising the five younger children in Kempsey.

Among those five children was Mary Ann Diaper - whose initials were M.A.D. - which made her the likely original owner of the box. Why it ended up with her sister remains a mystery, but a little more research revealed that Mary Ann stayed in Kempsey, married a farmer called Thomas Allington and raised eleven children.

The research can be like looking for a needle in a haystack, but there’s something appealing to people researching their family history. ‘There are plenty of ways to go about it online’ says Jacquie, but there’s no substitute for visiting the archive, you can discover so much more.’

All About...

Edgar Tower The Edgar Tower has stood on the south side of Worcester Cathedral since 1347. An important part of Worcester’s history, today its stonework needs urgent repair and so a major fundraising effort is underway. Nick Drew is Worcester Cathedral’s Director of Fundraising and tells us more.

Tell us why the tower is so important?

It’s believed there has been a defensive structure of some sort on this site since the reign of King John in the eleventh century. Over the centuries it has been called St Mary’s Gate and The Great Gate but was first called Edgar Tower in the 18th Century after the tenth century King, during whose reign it was believed to have been first erected. According to research by our former Cathedral Library Assistant Deirdre McKeown, it has served many purposes including a bulwark against unruly mobs, a prison, a schoolroom (up to the present day) as well as an office and home. It has a portcullis groove, and socalled murder holes through which all manner of unpleasant substances could be poured to defend the Cathedral! The building also bears marks left by previous generations, from graffiti to handprints left on its walls.

What is the scale of the repair work that’s needed?

Like much of the Cathedral, The Edgar Tower is made of sandstone which is prone to weathering.

It has been restored many times in its long history, most recently in the early 1990s, but part of the building is now showing signs of serious decay. As soon as the scaffolding went up at the start of December, we quickly realised the job was bigger than we realised. Our initial estimate was that we’d need £300,000 to complete repairs but that’s now risen substantially.

Technically, what’s involved?

At the Cathedral we’re fortunate to have a very talented team of stonemasons. They know the stonework intimately and have a good idea of what they need to do. They will check each stone individually by eye as well as giving it a percussion test to see if it’s re-usable. If new stone is needed, it will be cut from old stone as far as possible. The work starts this month and we don’t want to leave the tower for another winter in its current condition or it could be damaged even more by the weather.

How are you raising donations?

We’ve come up with a novel fundraising plan.

Individuals can sponsor a stone which will have initials carved on one of its interior faces.

These initials will remain an integral part of the tower even when the outside face begins to weather. Perhaps in another seven centuries a stonemason will uncover these marks once again! Donors will receive a certificate as well as a plan showing where the stone is placed.

There will also be a commemorative ledger with a longer dedication held in the cathedral’s library for posterity.

We’ve also received a grant of £69,500 from the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England, as well as a number of other smaller grants, but this still leaves us some way short of the total we need, so more help is essential to maintain this impressive building.

Local Talent

I’m Dave Webber and I present a weekly music show on Choice Radio, the service for Worcestershire Royal Hospital. Wes Dance is a multi-talented musician from Worcester who I believe is under-rated as one of our most creative local artists.

It’s been a few years since Wes recorded any of his music. His last album, Penance, was recorded five years ago but is filled with distinctive and catchy tracks. With strong vocals and acoustic guitar, Wes mixes in other instruments that give his music an eclectic feel.

‘I think that might be down to the guy who produced it’ he says. ‘I’ve known Phil Bridges since childhood but we lost touch. I came across his music again on Youtube and we got back in touch before recording the album.’

Wes has mostly taught himself to play different instruments. ‘You just keep practising until you get it right’ he says with a hint of modesty. ‘It was a friend who first got me interested in guitar’ he continues. ‘He leant me his guitar for a couple of weeks and before I knew it I was playing. I started transferring my music to piano, a few people showed me how to play it correctly and I was picking it up as I went along.’

He has been playing a lot of live shows throughout 2014, not just in Worcester but around the Birmingham area as well. It’s given him a chance to try out some of his new songs to lots of different audiences. ‘There’s a good music scene in Worcester, but its been good to play in Birmingham where people might come across your music by chance. At most gigs I’ve had people come up to me and ask where they can hear more of my music.’

Wes doesn’t have any more gigs pencilled in but expects to be up and running once the new EP is recorded. ‘I’ve had offers to play for December and January but I haven’t accepted them’ he says. ‘I’m hoping to start playing in London next year and I’m talking to contacts and old band members there.’

In a former life, Wes played in a band that performed at the Cambridge Folk Festival and

appeared on BBC Radio 2. As a solo performer he admits life is tougher as you only have yourself to rely on, but there are highlights as well. ‘I played at The Wychwood Festival which was good and I’m looking forward to rejoining Phil Bridges to record my new EP.’ The EP should be ready by the end of January.

‘I’ve been meaning to record something new’ says Wes, ‘but I’ve been gigging a lot and haven’t got round to it. I’ve got the songs ready and the drums are set up so I hope to start recording any day now.’

In pursuit of Exuberance

By Tracy Reck, Personal Fitness Coach in Worcester If, when you’ve exercised you feel great, and by eating better you feel better, then you already know that great health - and every step towards it - leads to exuberance, the quality of being full of energy, excitement, and cheerfulness.

Fitness, vegetables, water, protein, squats, sleep, meditation - all these things that we seek to master - are a means to find and experience exuberance as a permanent state. And you know what exuberance leads to?

Success. In every endeavour.

It’s not, as we most often think, the other way round.

We think that hard work leads to success and once success is attained, happiness (exuberance by another name) will follow.

But Shawn Achor has a different viewpoint.

He’s an American Researcher and Teacher of Psychology whose lecture “The Happiness Advantage” is one of the most popular TED talks (a nonprofit devoted to ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’).

He believes that every time you achieve success in something, you move the goalposts. Once you’ve achieved good exam results at school, you set your sights on better grades. Once you’ve got the job you wanted, you start hankering after a better one. In other words, once you hit your target, you immediately start working on a bigger, better target - which means you never actually reach success, you just keep pushing it further and further away. If you’ve tied success to happiness, you keep pushing that away too. You can’t reach it that way.

Luckily for us, the research Shawn presents in his talk shows that our brains work the other way around. By feeling more positive in the

present, your brain experiences what he calls a ‘happiness advantage’ which means you perform significantly better than you would if you were feeling negative. Your levels of creativity and intelligence rise and so does your energy. In a nutshell, this is how we can use happiness to create success, rather than hoping success will lead to happiness.

Recipe

Roasted Squash Nowadays squashes in many shapes and sizes are abundantly available. Grown on most allotments and available particularly from farm shops or in vegetable box schemes they are the essence of family food!

I was first introduced to squash when as a new mum I was looking for organic vegetables suitable to process for weaning foods and a South African friend who stayed with us at the time showed me a few tricks on dealing with these strange looking vegetables.

Ingredients 750g Squash 6 Beetroots 1 Medium Red Onion 75g Feta Cheese, Parsley or Coriander (optional) For the dressing 1tbsp balsamic vinegar 3 tbsp olive oil 1 crushed garlic clove salt & black pepper

Here is a recipe for a winter salad that has the advantage of using roasted squash chunks turning them into a sophisticated lunch dish (also ideal for a winter buffet if you are entertaining!), but who is to say you couldn't keep some of those chunks, to puree and feed the smaller members of the family at the same time!

Roasted Squash & Beetroot Salad with Red Onions 1. Firstly roast the main vegetable components. The beetroots will take about 1 hour to roast with a little oil, water in the tray which should be covered with tin foil.

2. The squash can be cut into wedges, deseeded, drizzled with olive oil and roasted with the skin on for about thirty minutes, then scooped out of the skin later.

3. The onions should be peeled and cut into wedges, tossed in olive oil and will take 20-30 minutes, you could squeeze them in the tray with the squash!

4. While the vegetables are roasting make the dressing by crushing the garlic clove and then whizzing together with the oil, vinegar, salt and pepper.

5. When you are ready to serve, toss the cool roasted vegetables in the dressing, place in a serving bowl and crumble feta cheese over the top. You can also add some freshly chopped parsley or coriander if you choose.

To dress this dish up further you could include some fresh orange zest and juice in the dressing and slice fresh orange segments into the salad.

Peter Pan Goes Wrong COMEDY AWARD WINNERS RETURN WITH A NEW SPIN ON A FAMILY FAVOURITE Celebrated West End newcomers and winners of the Whatsonstage Award for Best New Comedy 2014, Mischief Theatre is coming to Malvern Theatres with their new show Peter Pan Goes Wrong from Mon19th – Sat 24th January.

The play introduces ‘The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society’ who are attempting to stage J.M. Barrie’s classic tale of Peter Pan, but as the title suggests, everything that can go wrong… does, as the accident prone thesps embark on a thrilling adventure to Neverland with hilariously disastrous results. A highly physical comedy packed with finely-tuned mayhem and Buster Keaton inspired slapstick, Peter Pan Goes Wrong delivers a fast-paced show with split-second timing and ambitious daring. Terrific fun for all ages.

The production will be performed by an ensemble cast of ten, featuring: Laurence Pears, Cornelius Booth, Alex Bartram, James Marlowe, Chris Leask, Leonie Hill, Naomi Sheldon, Matt Cavendish, Harry Kershaw and Rosie Abraham.

The company will be casting local children at each venue to play ‘the Lost Boys’.
