All About...

tudor house worcester With it’s leaded windows, timber beams and decorative plaster ceiling, Tudor House Museum is one of Worcester’s most beautiful historic buildings. The museum on Friar Street is run almost entirely with volunteer help, and Elizabeth Pimblett, their Curator Manager, tells us more. love the historic building and want to be part of the band who keep it open and free to the public.

We have social occasions to bring everyone together. It’s also really nice for us to be able help the younger volunteers get the experience they need to find a paid job in the heritage sector.

And what events do you have coming up this year?

What is there for visitors to see and do?

The house was built in the 1500s and our displays show some of what has happened in Worcester since it was built: we used to be famous in Tudor times for our high quality broadcloth, so we have a replica loom to tell the story of the weavers who lived here, and then fun things like a sheep costume for small children to try on. There is a World War 2 room, a school clinic from the 1930s, horse-drawn carts which used to bring milk to the streets of Worcester and the Industry Room focuses on the richness of Worcester’s working past. Best of all is the wonderful plaster ceiling from the early 1600s in the Tudor Room, restored by Richard Cadbury.

We were very proud to receive the Worcester BID Customer Service Award (Entertainment and Leisure) in 2014 for the third time and we’ve also been awarded Trip Advisor’s Certificate of Excellence 2015.

You are currently asking for new volunteers, what kinds of things will they do?

We always need more stewards and Coffee Shop helpers, as we are open three days a week in the summer but our staff also have to go on holiday!

At the moment we need an Events Marketing Coordinator in particular. A curatorial helper would also be great.

People volunteer here because we are relaxed, welcoming and supportive, but also because they

In September we are Going Back to the 40s for Heritage Open Day, there will be all kinds of activities to enjoy. Tudor dance, cellar and attic tours, vintage motorbikes; these are just some of the things coming up this year.

Worcester festival There are dozens of events taking place for this year’s Worcester Festival between 15th and 31st August.

his popular annual festival welcomes new and completely different activities this year, from a junior chess tournament to the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships taking place at the University of Worcester Arena.

Gugge 2000 Saturday 15th August, 11am outside the Guildhall FREE - Live, loud and entertaining music from this feel-good brass and percussion band. With up to 50 musicians in exuberant costumes playing in public, this is always a popular opening event at the festival.

Battle Of Worcester – City Walk Monday 17th August, 11am until Noon FREE

Many popular activities make a return, including a street performance by Gugge 2000, a percussion and brass band which always goes down a storm at the festival’s official opening!

Battle of Worcester Society Guides take you on a fascinating tour of some of the key sites associated with the battle.

There are plenty of children’s activities, tours around historic buildings and a Free Family Fun Day and Dog Show on 23rd August at Worcester Woods Country Park.

Local Talent

I’m Dave Webber and I present a weekly music show on Choice Radio, the service for Worcestershire Royal Hospital. This month’s band only exists thanks to a dare between two friends and the manager of a local venue!

It all began for the Woo Town Hillbillies when two founder members went along to a blues evening at the Re-con in Malvern. After listening to the music for a while, Simon and Andy thought they could do the same. ‘Good’ said the manager, ‘because you’re going to be headlining next month’!

Simon and Andy rose to the challenge, pulled in a few mates, and began a band from scratch.

After a few comings and goings, the Woo Town Hillbillies were formed and today their bluegrass, jugband mix of music is popular the length and breadth of Britain and beyond. Not bad for a bunch of musicians from Woo Town!

Live performance is the group’s lifeblood and they admit they’ve created some of their best songs during gigs. They recently created their own version of Duelling Banjos while playing in front of an audience, and with sixty plus gigs this year, they’ve had plenty of opportunity to fine tune their songs.

Luke Warm leads on vocals, five string banjo, guitar and is also a talented harmonica player who sometimes works as a session musician for other artists. The group’s distinctive sound is made up with Mr Meaner on lead guitar and mandolin, Emmy Lou on ukulele and banjolele, Paul Smith on double bass and Goose Goldberg on the washboard.

Their first CD, Hay Fever, was launched back in April with a special gig at Rise Records in Worcester and after some radio airplay it’s selling well. You can see why the band is popular, with songs like ‘Dartmoor Girl’ it’s full of memorable tunes and lyrics.

Some of The Woo Town’s recent local gigs included Cathedral Chaos when they were on stage with The Delray Rockets, Nigel Clarke and Skewwhiff. This summer they’re playing around

Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Somerset and head off for a tour of Holland in the autumn.

‘You have to work hard at it’ Luke tells me, ‘we’ve played some great festivals and it’s such a lot of fun.’

Just recently the band has been looking to develop it’s sound further and wants to add a violin to their line-up. Just get in touch with them if you can help!

If you want to catch them this month, they’re playing at Lakefest near Tewkesbury on 8th August and at the Pershore Plum Festival at the end of August. In September they’re due to be playing at Ye Olde Talbot Hotel in the centre of Worcester.

roots saturday night burgers The best burgers are really simple to make and you can add delicious burger bun fillers that reflect your family’s tastes … Enjoy!

1. Mix the mince, the bacon, onion, herbs, spices and egg by hand then shape the whole mixture into a large sausage. Mark the “sausage” into the number of portions you require. Shape each portion into a rough ball shape squeezing the mixture firmly together. Flatten to make the burger patty shape about 1 inch thick.

2. Put a tablespoon of vegetable oil into a frying pan and bring up to a medium hot temperature.

3. Put the burger patties in the frying pan and leave for two minutes to seal before turning over and repeating on the other side.

4. Once sealed on the second side, turn them back over and turn the heat down a little for them to fully cook on each side (about ten minutes in total).

Getting out of your comfort zone

By Tracy Reck, Personal Fitness Coach in Worcester There’s a quote from the American entrepreneur and author Seth Godin that inspired me when I first started out and continues to inspire me today. Seth Godin argues that you can identify the thing you need to do the most because of your resistance to it. This is because resistance identifies the thing it most wants to stop. ow true.

What have you wanted to do lately that’s been a real struggle, because although a big part of you wants to do it, another part of you is running scared?

H

A lot of people experience this with their body change attempts. They start out on a plan to get fit, kick-off with all guns blazing but are then overwhelmed by the scale of the task and how far outside their Comfort Zone they find themselves.

In our enthusiasm for reaching a goal, we jump into action feet first. What we don’t know at that point is that we’ve just launched ourselves so far from our Comfort Zone that we land slap-bang in the middle of our Panic Zone.

Being in the Panic Zone is what brings up those feelings of resistance. It feels like you’re out of your depth. It feels like you don’t know what you’re doing. It feels pretty horrible, to be honest, and any of us would be forgiven for doing a fast about-turn and paddling full pelt back towards your Comfort Zone.

Thankfully, there is a way out of this back-and-forth.

We shrink the change.

• Instead of going from eating three bars of chocolate a day to eating none, we switch to eating two • Instead of going from not exercising at all to

exercising six times a week for an hour at a time, we aim for 15 minutes, twice a week.

This approach puts you into the Stretch Zone. The Stretch Zone is a whole lot less scary. It doesn’t bring up as much resistance, so it won’t have you scuttling away into the safety of your Comfort Zone.

And although it might seem like a drop in the ocean to make a change that is small and simplistic, it’s actually the only way to reach your ultimate goal.

You’re trying to build a bridge from where you are to where you want to be and that bridge can only be built with several small actions. If you try to build it with one big leap, it won’t be strong enough to hold.

If you want to escape your Comfort Zone into a better place, you need to reach carefully out into your Stretch Zone to avoid the resistance coming up and driving you back into the safety of the status quo.

But know that resistance doesn’t mean you should stop chasing your goal, just that you need to shrink the change you’re asking of yourself.

Oliver!

This August, Malvern Theatres Young Company is delighted to present its fourth production: Lionel Bart’s musical version of Charles Dickens’s classic novel Oliver! The theatre is proud to announce that Andy Reiss, from the Beyond the Barricade Company, will be returning to the venue to direct this iconic musical.

Set in the cobbled Victorian streets of London, orphaned Oliver Twist sets out from the workhouse, searching for a home, a family, and - most importantly – for love. Cold, exhausted and in need of help, Oliver is picked up by a boy named the Artful Dodger before being welcomed into the gang of child pickpockets, masterminded by the criminal Fagin.

Whilst watching the child pickpockets swipe a handkerchief from an elderly gentleman, Oliver is left feeling horrified and runs off. Oliver is then rescued by a kind and wealthy gentlemen, much to the dismay of Fagin’s jealous sidekick, Bill Sykes.

Amongst all, warm-hearted Nancy, who is trapped under Bill’s thumb, feels sorry for Oliver and is secretly desperate to help him, however only ending in tragic results all round.

Last year’s Young Company production of Jesus Christ Superstar received standing ovations and this year’s show promises the same. So come along and support this young company of performers all aged between 8-24 years old and enjoy this musical classic famous for its spirted and timeless songs, such as ‘Food Glorious Food’, ‘As Long As He Needs Me’, and ‘Where is Love’.
