For this month’s magazine we’ve been up a belltower and taken to the river, all in the name of keeping Worcester’s traditions alive!

The bellringers at St John’s Church are a friendly bunch who meet weekly, but just a few years ago they had to stop when major problems were uncovered in the bell tower.

Fortunately that’s been solved and now the sound of the church bells rings out across the city once more.

Meanwhile a group of volunteers has been running a ferry service across the Severn near to the cathedral. This has been running since medieval times and possibly much earlier, but it nearly disappeared completely until a fundraising effort helped to re-start the service around 30 years ago.

Both of these activities continue thanks to the dedication of local people offering their time to volunteer.

They are part of what makes our city special, and its nice to see these traditions continue in a modern place like Worcester.

volunteers needed

for the cathedral ferry Wanted – volunteers to crew Worcester’s oldest surviving ferry service across the River Severn. The job involves rowing visitors and locals across the river on weekend afternoons during the summer months. Can there really be a more idyllic place to be a volunteer? Mark Glossop who has been involved in running the ferry for more than 30 years tells us more.

The ferry service we run today started just over thirty years ago. The ferry was set up thanks to the wife of the Headmaster at the King’s School, who had collected money in memory of Doris Kinnersley, a local woman who had done much for local good causes.

We decided to re-start the old Cathedral Ferry at the crossing point where it had run for hundreds of years up until around 1960. We know it was one of six ferries on the river in the city. One was at Diglis before the lock was built, others at the racecourse grandstand and The Dog and Duck and there were others upstream at Barbourne and The Camp at Grimley.

We spent quite a lot of money buying and kitting out our boat, and received a lot of co-operation from British Waterways. Although the steps on the cathedral side still existed, those on the far bank had disappeared and so we started digging and eventually uncovered a low step. We had actually been looking in the wrong place. The steps were not quite in line with the steps on the opposite bank but were slightly upstream.

We currently have seven active volunteers but would welcome one or two more to help with running the service during weekends through the summer. You need to be over 18 years old, reasonably able-bodied and willing to give up a few weekends of your time. You also need to enjoy being in a boat.

We provide full training which begins with the new volunteer accompanying an existing ferryman and ‘learning the ropes’. Once we’re happy with your competence there is a test, and if you pass then you are ready to become a ferryman.

The job involves fetching the boat from its moorings at Diglis and bringing it up to the crossing point. You will then spend the afternoon ferrying passengers across the river before returning the boat to its mooring at the end of the day. If the weather is awful or the river is too high we do not run!

Why do our volunteers enjoy their work so much?

It’s fun and a different sort of thing to do. My wife claims I do it to ‘get away from the old woman’!

It’s actually a very pleasant way to spend a day, especially a sunny summer afternoon. It’s not too arduous and you meet many interesting people.

Our work also raises money for charity, and since we began we’ve given away nearly £15,000 to many local causes. As well as regular donations to the cathedral and local hospices, volunteers can suggest charities of their own.

Halfway up the narrow stone staircase that spirals up the inside of the tower at St John’s Church is a stout red wooden door. Pushing it open reveals a brightly lit square room, where small groups of people are clustered around the bell ropes, animatedly discussing the ancient art of bellringing.

It’s a timeless scene, with conversation and chit chat that must have been taking place in this church tower for many centuries. But six years ago all of that nearly came to an end when death watch beetle was discovered boring into the frame that supports the bells.

it weighs nearly as much as a small car. It can be a challenge to ring unless you are a more experienced bellringer. If you sit in the corner of the tower room when ringing is in full swing, you can literally feel the walls of the tower swaying slightly under the weight of the bells.

‘I’d only been ringing for three years when that happened’ says John Sheehan, who at the age of 19 is one of the younger members of the band that rings here. ‘It took until 2011 to re-open the bell tower and by then we’d lost a lot of the old ringers.’

The band at St Johns is led by three Ringing Masters who help beginners. Bellringing itself is straightforward to learn, but becomes more complicated as you progress. ‘There are tricks, certain things to look out for’ says John Sheehan.

‘You can go as far as you want with ringing, but learn at your own pace.’

Fortunately new people stepped forward and today there are around sixteen regulars coming every Thursday for ringing practise.

The first thirty minutes are given over to newcomers and new members are always needed. ‘It would be lovely to get more people involved’ says Jo Pride, one of the band members. ‘I learned when I was nine or ten but only came back to it recently. We’re particularly proud of the range of people here’ she says, ‘it’s a real mix and a good atmosphere. It becomes a little family really.’

Members believe the group thrives because of the many social outings, from meals out, ghost walks, theatre trips and picnics. They organised an open day at the tower to mark St Agatha’s Day in February and helped to raise £500 for the Worcestershire Breast Unit Appeal.

Bell ringing is an ancient tradition and has its own language. The coloured grip on the end of the rope is called a Sally.The group who ring are known as the Band and they are led by a Captain.

There are eight bells hanging in the church tower at St John’s. The tenor bell is the heaviest and

There are many highlights for bellringers but Jo Pride’s favourite is Christmas. ‘It’s really special’ she says, ‘I especially love midnight mass but Easter is also very special. You don’t have to be a churchgoer to become a bellringer, everybody is welcome to come along.’

‘We mark many special occasions’ says Gemma Ward whose another member of the band, ‘not only weddings but we do all sorts.’ At 6pm on April 23rd the bells at St Johns Church will be rung as part of a national ring to mark St George’s Day.

Three ways with purple sprouting broccoli As vegetable growers there is a frustrating gap in the year between March (the end of last season) and late April (the start of the new season) – six weeks of “what can we offer our customers” to break the boredom of stored potatoes, parsnips, swede and carrots!

The answer for us is always ...Purple Sprouting Broccoli. Socalled because of the delicately purple tinged florets and leaves that sprout from the main stem which are picked as they mature leaving other florets to mature for the next cut.

Allotment growers and keen gardeners have kept this one up their sleeve. I had never seen “PSB”, as we call it, until moving to Worcestershire and it is a crop I truly look forward to now, at its best in March/April. Of course the reason for its popularity in this part of the world is that like the other Worcestershire favourite, asparagus, our soils and favourable climatic conditions grow the best plants and there is a ready market for it sold freshly picked straight from the field. It is not the sort of vegetable that lends itself to the supermarket supply chain and you are unlikely to get hold of a perfect sample unless you visit a local greengrocer or farm shop – buy it freshly picked, then...

As you are going to eat this vegetable whole it is a good idea to rinse it thoroughly (remember it has been standing in the field all winter!), trim the end of the stems, thicker stems may need to be shaved slightly, and then toss it into a pan of generously salted boiling water for 3-4 minutes.

Test the stems with a sharp knife to see that they are cooked to your liking. Serve immediately with a knob of butter, salt and pepper.

In a Stir Fry This is the “whole-ish” version of the vegetable! It is best blanched as above then plunged into cold water to stop it cooking and drained. Prepare the rest of the stir fry as you choose, then roughly chop the broccoli and toss it in for the last few minutes of cooking.

Griddled with a Poached Egg This might seem a lot of fuss for such a simple vegetable, but believe me, the flavour brought out by the hot griddle is delicious. Blanch and drain the broccoli. Scorch the stems on a hot griddle pan by laying them alongside each other like soldiers. Then season with salt and pepper.

A Softly poached egg on the side makes this a delicious light meal.

Local Talent

I’m Dave Webber and I present a weekly music show on Choice Radio, the service for Worcestershire Royal Hospital. This month I’m telling you about a talented group of musicians who count the Poet Laureate amongst their fans.

Bitterroots are no ordinary band. They’re a talented group of musicians playing traditional and Americana influenced melodies who can often be heard in some of the smaller, downhome pubs of Worcester.

The group is made up of five musicians – Helen who plays the fiddle and sings, Mark on the button-accordion, Anthony on the bass, Rupert on guitar, hamonica and vocals and Ali on the bouzuki, lead guitar and dobro which is a type of slide-guitar with a very distinctive sound.

The group describes its music as a transatlantic mix of Appalachian, Irish, Scottish and English tunes and they came together thanks to the regular music sessions at the Lamb and Flag pub on The Tything. ‘I knew Ali, Helen and Mark through those session which were an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary stuff’ says Rupert Brakspear. ‘We’ve been playing together for three or four years now - after Beth our original bass player left a year ago we’ve been playing with a young guy called Anthony who is an extraordinary, multi-talented guy.’

The group performs a lot of its own music and during a typical performance they will throw in some traditional numbers. They might even play a few covers from groups they admire like Hurray for the Riff Raff and Old Crow Medicine Show, both of which are American string and folk-blues bands.

One of the group’s many pub gigs in Worcester led to a surprise performance with Carol Ann Duffy, the Poet Laureate. ‘We met her when she was performing at The Lamb and Flag and since then she’s asked us back’ says Rupert. ‘We performed with her at The Chase High School in Malvern which was a sellout performance and went down really well. She’ll read some of her poetry and we’ll play a couple of numbers.

Basically it’s great to have that link with those

events - the audiences come for Carol-Ann, which means we get to share our stuff with a wider audience!’

The band are constantly working up new material when time allows – they all lead busy lives and have to fit their music around everything else.

They are clearly a band that would rather play a live set rather than record something to raise their online profile. They’ve recorded a couple of tracks which you’ll find at the Reverb Nation website and there are a good number of video performances on their Facebook page as well.

If you read this in time Bitterroots play at The Lamb and Flag on The Tything on March 28th. At the start of July they’re playing in Malvern and have another gig pencilled in this autumn alongside Carol Ann Duffy. You’ll find their upcoming dates on their Facebook page – search for bitterroots.uk

Group News

Black Pear Gardening Club The Black Pear Gardening Club is an active group, with regular meetings and talks as well as visits to gardens. There are around 80 members and the club meets in Powick on the third Saturday of every month. Brian Skeys is the Chairman and tells us more.

We are a relatively new club which brings together people who share a common enthusiasm for plants and gardens. During the winter we hold indoor meetings and invite speakers who tell us more about their own interests in horticulture or wildlife.

As the weather improves we organise various trips and events. In May we are holding a Gardener’s Market & Cafe, where local nurseries will be selling plants and garden related products.

During the summer months we have a coffee morning at a member’s garden and we arrange visits to gardens further afield. In August we’re arranging a coach trip Waterperry Gardens in Oxford. Because we are affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society, a group of up to 55 of our members can gain free entry to RHS gardens.

Our annual subscription is £5 and if you’d like to come to one of our meetings before joining, you will be made very welcome and there’s absolutely no obligation to join. Well-Being

motivation is overrated...

By Tracy Reck, Personal Fitness Coach in Worcester Why is it, when someone really wants to lose weight and get healthier, they can get started but they can’t finish? Why do they end up drifting off into the self-sabotaging behaviours they’re trying to change, after such a promising start?

The answer, I suspect, is rooted in Zig Ziglar’s idea that motivation is just like bathing - it doesn’t last.

My observation from Personal Training for years is the difference between someone who succeeds at getting into shape and someone who doesn’t is that the successful person doesn’t need motivation in order to take action.

They’ll just go and do what needs to be done, even in the absence of any inclination to do so.

Motivation is a very fickle friend. Some days it’s with you, some days you won’t see it for dust. If you can get on board with that and learn how to act in its absence, your results will go through the roof!

One thing that kills motivation stone dead is the lack of results. But sometimes results aren’t missing, they’re just shy and happening below the surface.

They may not be showing themselves, but that doesn’t mean stuff isn’t happening.

The more good choices you make, the more good choices you’ll go on to make because your brain will develop new pathways. The more good food you eat, the more good food you’ll go on to eat because your palate will shift. The more workouts you do, the more workouts you’ll go on to do because you’ll create a habit.

All that equals a changed you, just a bit further down the line. You can’t build without first laying the foundations.

If you just keep going, even in the face of incredibly slow progress and the appearance that nothing is changing; if you just keep going, even if you have

breaks and sabbaticals and lose your way from time to time; if you just keep going: you WILL get there.

Just because you have a goal doesn’t mean you’ll have non-stop, wall to wall motivation to help you achieve it. If we were to draw a graph of what motivation levels really look like over the lifetime of a human goal, I reckon it’d look like a roller coaster.

Some ups and real highs, but loads of downs and lows too.

The people who succeed in getting fit, lean and healthy over time are the ones who continue to take action even when they’re on the steepest downward slope of that rollercoaster. They’re the ones who just keep doing the do, to quote the Betty Boop song.

Don’t wait for your motivation to reappear if it’s gone off for a wander. It may be gone for some time. Find a way to do it anyway.

STARRING DAVID SUCHET as LADY BRACKNELL Prior to a West End run, David Suchet will star as Lady Bracknell in Oscar Wilde’s much loved and exhilarating masterpiece The Importance of Being Earnest at Malvern Theatres from Monday 25th to Saturday 30th May. Wilde’s superb satire on Victorian manners is one of the funniest plays in the English language – the delightful repartee and hilarious piercing of hypocrisy and pomposity can still make you laugh out loud.

Written shortly before Wilde fell foul of society’s unbending condemnation, The Importance of Being Earnest fizzes with wit as he delights in debunking social pretensions. Two bachelor friends, upper crust dandy Algernon Moncrieff and the most reliable John Worthing J.P., lead double lives to court the attentions of the desirable Gwendolyn Fairfax and Cecily Cardew. The gallants must then grapple with the uproarious consequences of their ruse, and with the formidable Lady Bracknell.

David Suchet is one of Britain’s most respected actors on both stage and screen. Best known for his title role in television’s Poirot, his most recent stage credits include Long Day’s Journey Into Night and All My Sons in the West End. Winner of an International Emmy award for his performance in BBC drama Maxwell, he has been nominated for numerous Olivier, Tony and BAFTA awards throughout his career, and was awarded the CBE in 2010.
