It’s been a good year according to many local apple farmers, with bumper crops of fine, juicy applies. All around our area, in orchards old and new, in back gardens and poking out of hedgerows, are trees bursting with fruit.

Traditionally this has been a prime area for growing apples and other fruits, indeed at one time there was quite a local industry built up around it. Later this month there are two local events to celebrate this heritage - the first at Westons Cider in Much Marcle, the other in Colwall. Apart from the fun and games there will also be the chance at different events to press your own apple juice, and sample cider.

And its not just about entertainment, in her regular column Allison Maxwell tells us about the benefits of eating local produce, freshly harvested and in season. As we head into autumn there’s still so much to do, this months’ ‘What’s On’ listing is positively bursting with ideas to make the most of October.

The Big Draw This month, a huge art project spanning twenty countries and five continents is coming to Cradley. Launched ten years ago, the idea is simple. Anyone, from professional artist to school child creates a picture on a blank postcardsized piece of paper. The results are sold or auctioned and the money raised goes to a locally based charity.

Its called The Big Draw, and it uses art to bring visitors to museum and gallery collections as well as bring them into contact with urban and rural spaces, in new and enjoyable ways. It’s aim is to include everybody, especially those who love to draw and those who think they can’t.

involved too, children will be encouraged to get out their pencils and paints to create original artwork that will form part of the gallery’s exhibition. ‘Many local and professional artists have also been asked to join in, so there should be a fantastic variety of work on display’ says Sue.

Sue Lim from the Blue Ginger Art Gallery is running the local event this year, and is asking customers, artists, schoolchildren, in fact anybody at all to submit postcard sized portraits of a person, an animal or a fantastical creature. Entries will be exhibited on the gallery walls and will then be auctioned off to raise money for the Acorns Children’s Hospice in Worcester.

The event culminates in an afternoon sale and auction of the pictures on Sunday 24th October, a free event with free tea or coffee and cakes.

Someone from the Acorns Hospice will also be there to explain more about their work and how the money raised will help them.

“Last year we asked for portraits of pets’ says Sue, ‘and we were delighted to have nearly 500 pieces of original artwork which were donated for sale. In the end we raised over £700 for Acorns Children’s Hospice. This year we aim to get more people drawing and raise even more money.”

Postcard Portraits need to be submitted to Sue at the Gallery before Sunday 10th October. All the drawings will then be displayed there from Wednesday 13th October until Sunday 24th. Local schools are getting

The Big Draw is organised by an independent charity called The Campaign for Drawing whose aim is to raise the profile of drawing as a tool for thought and creativity. Its long-term ambition is to change the way drawing is perceived by both the public and the education system. Since it started it’s been supported by some leading figures in the world of the creative industries and in art, architecture and design colleges. The charity says its work will be finished when the words ‘I can’t draw’ are dropped from our vocabulary!

Two Local Plays The Colwall Players present CONFUSIONS by Alan Ayckbourn Thursday 28th – Saturday 30th October Colwall Village Hall, Evenings 7.30pm Confusions is a set of five loosely linked playlets which, although first staged in 1976, seem stunningly relevant to the 21st century.

Ranging from the frenetic “Gosforth’s Fete” to the melancholy “Talk in the Park” the plays explore, through comedy and farce, the often tragic subtext of everyday life. Together, they are a charmingly observed study of middle-class marital anxieties, reflecting common themes of social isolation, lack of communication, and loneliness.

We see a young housewife whose unsupported responsibility for childcare has taken over her entire personality, followed by an inept seduction scene as her travelling salesman husband attempts to chat up two young women in a northern hotel. In the restaurant of the same hotel there is a fraught encounter between two

couples – not helped by an interactive waiter! Next, we by visit a Summer fete which becomes chaotic as eveything Alan Ayckbourn goes wrong, the weather worsens, and the whole thing heads towards total disaster.

The Cradley Players present THE HOUSE OF HORRIBLE HORRORS

by Christopher Lowder Wednesday 27th - Saturday 30th October Cradley Primary School, Evenings 7.30pm This production will maintain the group’s commitment to novelty and surprise, promises Chairman David Robertson, because the company is tackling a genre that has a long history but which they’ve never tried before. That ‘genre’ is the ghost story and the play in question is the world premiere of a new work by local author Christopher Lowder - who writes professionally as Jack Adrian. The play, which Chris will also direct, is called The House of Horrible Horrors and he describes it as a ‘macabre entertainment for the long winter nights’.

‘The golden age of the ghost story was the last quarter of the 19th and the first fifty years of the 20th centuries, Chris says. ‘They were especially popular just after the First World War when those who’d lost loved ones sought comfort both from spooky dramas and from séances and spiritualism’.

In this spirit, The House of Horrible Horrors has many of the traditional ingredients of its type, starting when two strangers - Tony (Russell Shalofsky) and Felicity (Trish Rogers) - meet by chance in what we and they soon discover is a far from ordinary country

house. As well as sinister chatelaine Mrs Molesworth (Jill Nicklin) and her menacing butler Mordaunt (Paul Bannister), the pair also encounter a cast of eccentrics who have increasingly bizarre stories to recount. These range from the world’s youngest ghost (Olivia Shalofsky) and a spurned lover (Sue Lim) to Meg Monk’s tale of a hospital patient with a weird stalker and Roger Gill’s spooky story of a former soldier’s visit to a haunted mansion. Add in Charles Dickens, Sweeny Todd and a coffin-full of vampires (one of whom, played by Roseanna Upton, has the world’s loudest scream) and you have the makings of what has also been called a ‘comic chiller with a devilish twist’. To discover exactly what the ‘twist’ is you’ll have to see the play for yourself as cast members have signed a written promise not to reveal it.

Eating with the Seasons Eating seasonally means eating food that is at its peak in terms of flavour and nutritional content, while at the same time cutting down on food miles, says our resident health expert Allison Maxwell from Colwall.

Produce is at its peak nutritional value when it is ripe. But fruit and veg travelling long distances to market are often picked before they’re fully ripened. While the produce might gain colour and softness on its journey to the supermarket, nutritional value comes through the stem from the living plant.

Once harvested, a vegetable is as nutritious as it will get. Therefore, eating seasonally means eating food that is at its peak in terms of flavour and nutritional content, while at the same time cutting down on food miles.

At this time of the year there is an abundance of fresh produce in season including apples, pears, mushrooms, butternut squash, elderberries, watercress and figs, to name but a few! The humble apple is among the most popular of fruit eaten in Britain, it has many health giving properties. The adage “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” may be truer than you think.

Recent studies have suggested the consumption of apples can help control weight gain, lower the risk of heart disease and help protect against some cancers.

Though most people think the flesh of the apple is the delicious part, the skin is definitely the most nutritious.

The pectin in apples lowers LDL (“bad”) cholesterol.

Apples also help to maintain a healthy digestive tract, helping to eliminate toxins in the bowel.

Watercress is a highly nutritious vegetable, a dark green plant with a pungent acidic flavour. Watercress

has been valued since ancient times for its health benefits, bright colour and refreshing taste. The name refers to the fact that it grows in clear running water. Watercress is rich in vitamins and minerals, especially iron. These days watercress is a proven antibiotic, so it is interesting that Hippocrates is reputed to have sited the first hospital by a stream in order to have it in ready supply. Modern cultivation is based in beds around freshwater springs. The main British season is from October to May. Walking around Colwall village I noticed an abundance of elderberries ripening on the trees.

Elderberries are distinctive dark blue or indigo to black small fruits that hang from the elder trees in dense umbrel clusters. Aware of their immune boosting properties I decided to use them to make a cough syrup, but there are many other delicious recipes for these berries, especially elderberry wine!

Lastly, if local food and drink is your thing then be sure to try and visit the Flavours of Herefordshire Food Festival on Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th October. The annual festival is now in its fifth year, and celebrates simple, natural, local food. All About... ...the Organist St James the Great Church in Cradley is looking for a new organist – a job described as enjoyable and rewarding. It comes as improvements to the building get underway making it more accessible for the community as a whole.

Why does the

church need a new organist?

Sue Scot who lives in Bromyard has been Cradley’s organist for some ten years but has decided to stand down as she wishes to reduce her commitments.

Her final Service at Cradley was on Sunday 19th September. The next day builders moved into the nave of the church to take up parts of the old wooden floor and replace it. As a result the organ has been ‘mothballed’ whilst the refurbishment takes place.

What kind of person is needed to replace Sue?

The rector says ‘we are immensely sorry to lose Sue, who has served us very faithfully and helped develop our music and our choir. With the renovation work underway, the Church and the organ will be out of commission for five to six weeks, so from Sue’s point of view it seemed a good time to stand down. We shall certainly miss her.’ The replacement organist also has the opportunity to lead the choir, a dedicated group many of whom have long experience of singing. ‘We do have another attraction’ says the Rector, ‘the early Nicholson organ, which is described as being “a Rolls-Royce of an organ” by some of those who have played it’. Nicholson was based in Worcester in the Victorian era, but in the 1950s relocated to Malvern. The organ

recently underwent a minor refurbishment paid for by donations. Sue Scot says it helped “make it a delight to play.” The Cradley organist will be expected to play at three services each month with occasional playing at other services and the work attracts a fee.

Why is the

church undergoing refurbishment?

Part of the wooden floor in the nave needs replacing, in the process small steps and changes in level will be eliminated, making access and movement within the Church easier for all, especially for the infirm and the very young. At the same time the font will be moved closer to the door, freeing up space for social activities within the Church and for displays. The display area is being created in partnership with the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Earth Heritage Trust.

Cradley Church is also looking ahead to possible future projects which could see the area underneath the tower transformed into a meeting space. There are also plans to eventually create new kitchen facilities and a toilet. All of this is intended to make the Church more adaptable not only for worship but also for use by the wider community.

During the renovation work Cradley’s Church Services will be held in the Village Hall and at Cradley School. It’s hoped the work will be finished and services can be resumed at the church in time for Remembrance Sunday.

The use of shrubs for autumn colour can be stunning.

Plants such as Cornus (Dogwoods) have wonderful yellow and red autumn leaves, Acers (Japanese maple) are also useful and there are hundreds of different varieties. Acer Griseum is a useful small tree, the green leaves gradually colour to scarlet and when the leaves fall the shiny bronze coloured bark is beautiful in the winter. As well as stems and foliage there are a huge range of shrubs and trees which produce every colour of berry imaginable. Colwall Apple Day How quickly autumn seems to have come around! There’s a celebration of the apple harvest taking place on 16h October at Colwall’s annual Apple Day. ‘Last year’s event was a great success’ says Helen Stace from Colwall Orchard Group, which organises the event. ‘This year, due to popular demand we’ll be holding some of the same events again. Our wheelbarrow procession begins at 1.30pm outside the village school on The Green. Its a chance for people to decorate their barrows and bring their apple harvest to the event in style! The procession will be led by local minstrels of great musical talent.’

The village’s orchards and gardens have an enviable diversity of apple varieties and other fruit, including some rare old varieties. If you’re lucky enough to have fruit trees in your garden but are not sure what varieties they might be, then help is at hand. John Edgely, formerly of Pershore College will be at the event to help identify the variety of your apples if you bring along three examples and a sprig from the tree.

A charge is made for the service but all proceeds go

towards the running of the group.

Throughout the afternoon volunteers will be juicing apples.

You’re welcome to bring your spare apples along and swap them for juice. You’ll also be able to learn how to make and keep fresh apple juice yourself. There will be lots of old fashioned apple themed children’s games, with prizes, an apple pie competition and musical merriment to accompany medieval dancing.

Refreshments in the form of tea, home made cakes, beer and cider will be available.

The event at Colwall Cricket Club starts at 2pm on 16th October. Entrance costs £1 for adults, 50p for children. Scrumptious Mussels Mussels in cider, garlic, chilli & cream By: Head Chef Chris Murphy, Scrumpy House Restaurant Top tip: Choose your mussels with care, they should be shiny, unbroken and, most importantly alive.

Ingredients: 2kgs / 4½lbs mussels, scrubbed and de-bearded 4 cloves garlic, chopped 1 fresh chilli, chopped (optional) 2 shallots, chopped 300ml / 10fl oz of Westons Stowford Press, Medium Dry Cider 300ml / 10fl oz of double cream

Serves 4

1. Scrub and de-beard the mussels and dry in a tea towel 2. Heat a heavy pan on a high heat and, when hot, add garlic, shallots, mussels, cream and cider..

3. Cover with a tight lid and cook for 5 minutes, shaking pan occasionally.

4. Drain the mussels into a colander, reserving the hot liquid.

Add the tomato topping. Season.

5. Remove and discard any unopened mussels and keep the remainder warm.Serve topped with basil leaves.

6. Return the liquid to the pan, turn the heat up high and continue to cook until it has reduced by half.

7. Add chilli and seasoning to taste.

8. Divide mussels into 4 bowls, pour the hot liquor over and serve immediately with good quality, fresh bread.

Special request: Rotary Club of Colwall - SPOKES

SPOKES is a registered charity working with young people who have severe learning difficulties. They are employed by servicing, repairing and refurbishing old bicycles for re-sale, which funds the charity. It is based in Kidderminster and they have a constant need for donations of old bicycles that people no longer need. They can be any size, both adults and children’s and in any condition.
