Welcome to the Winter Edition of All About ‘West of the Hills’.

Welcome to a special winter edition of West of the Hills magazine. This is the first time we’ve created such a magazine which covers both December and January, so be sure to keep this handy for the coming two months. Its hard to believe the photo on the front was taken at the start of this year, when temperatures sunk so low. Despite the discomfort, Colwall Green really did look its best as children made their way to school.

In the intervening months, many people have helped make this magazine a success, from the businesses who advertise, my fantastic team, our writers, to the deliverers who brave all weathers to put it through your door. Of course none of this would be possible without you picking it up and reading, so I’d like to say ‘Thanks’ to everyone and you as well! Christmas in Malvern big light switch on From 9am until 6pm on Saturday 3rd December

This year, Malvern’s Big Christmas Lights Switch On takes place on Saturday 3rd December. The whole day will be packed with fun and entertainment with something for everyone. Throughout the daytime there will be a Craft and Winter Food Fair in the grounds of the Priory, where there is also a full and varied programme of events taking place.

A selection of the highlights: Musical entertainment involving local choirs and bands will take place on a stage at the top of Church Street, on Belle Vue Island. For children who have completed their christmas present wishlists, Father Christmas will be ready to speak to them in his Grotto at Malvern Library. Street entertainers will be wandering the streets, completing the fun and festive atmosphere throughout the town centre. The Grand Christmas Parade starts at 5.45pm, and this year features pirates, stilt walkers and musicians. The parade culminates with the lights switch on, which this year is carried out

by Philip Martin Brown from Waterloo Road on BBC One. For more details on all the Christmas activities, take a look at the website www.christmasinmalvern.co.uk or pick up a leaflet and more details from the Tourist Information Centre or the Library.

Festive events continue throughout December.

Three years ago BCMB had a dream to take their long established teaching to other parts of the country. November 2008 saw the first introductory workshop at The Fold.

It was a cautious wondering start but soon became apparent that their roots had found rich soil. A complete Massage College firmly established itself at The Fold, Bransford near Worcester.

A regular and well supported programme of introductory workshops unfolded. The second professional diploma course is just finishing and the graduates are starting to practice. Green Fingers Bridget from Cave’s Folly Nursery is in the kitchen, going back to her roots!

One of the things I like best about the winter months is having time to cook. With the long evenings confining me to the` Great Indoors`, I enjoy preparing and cooking meals. Being a vegetarian makes me more imaginative with my veg and sometimes I have been known to go over the top. When my daughter was about four, as she munched her way through a plate full of veg, she announced there were seven types of veg on her plate and asked if I had gone mad! My favourite veg in winter are the roots. Easy to grow and cheap to buy, they are a low-cost staple food that’s full of starch which fills us up as well as providing essential nutrients. Potatoes are so versatile that they have become a regular part of all our diets. But don’t forget the amazing selection of other roots; swede, carrot, parsnip, sweet potato, kohlrabi, beetroot, turnip, celeriac, salsify, Jerusalem artichoke, onion and garlic; the list goes on and on.

Here are some of my favourite recipes to liven up your roots.

Honey Carrots Boil up some carrots, shallots and large pieces of celery for 10 minutes. Drain and put in a casserole dish. Melt a knob of butter in a pan, add chopped Rosemary and a spoon of honey. Pour the melted mixture over the veg and leave to marinate in a low oven.

Celeriac Bake Peel a couple of large potatoes and a medium celeriac; grate them into a bowl. Mix up and add to a frying pan of melted butter and cook until slightly brown. Add a handful of grated cheddar and press into a shallow oven dish , cook for about half an hour in a moderate oven.

Parsnip Fritters Boil about one pound (half a kilo) of Parsnips until tender. Heat some olive oil and sauté a small onion and a clove of garlic. Puree the parsnips in a blender with a little of the water (not too much), beat an egg and add black pepper with a pinch of nutmeg. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl, then heat olive oil in a frying pan and drop a large spoonful of the mix in. Press down with a spatula and cook until brown.

Winter on the hills Winter can be an excellent time to explore the hills, but the popular routes to the top can get busy. Helen Stace, from the Malvern Hills Conservators, offers some tips to find peace and quiet on even the busiest days.

This will hit your doormat as we approach the festive season, when days off work give lots of people more time to walk on the hills. The hill ridges can get pretty congested and if the paths are wet they become more vulnerable to erosion, so why not take time to explore some of the lesser known paths?

The Conservators manage many miles of paths, including some lovely Victorian contour paths which are well surfaced and offer a range of walks and views through woodland, scrub and open grassland.

There is lots of information about alternative routes from a variety of sources. Perhaps the easiest, if you have access to a computer, is the Malvern Hills Conservators website which includes information on the location of grazing animals and details of walks on the northern hills.

There are plenty of publications available as well.

The Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Partnership has produced Discovery Walks and ‘Miles Without Stiles’ leaflets. There’s a Geopark Way running right through our area and lots of accompanying guidebooks and Trail Guides produced by the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Earth Heritage Trust. And in Colwall the Parish Council has produced an excellent map of local footpaths. In all cases you should find literature available for sale in local shops or from the Tourist Information Centre in Malvern. Much of it can be

downloaded from the internet for free, the Malvern Trails website even offers electronic ‘tracklogs’ for those of you with GPS equipment.

Whilst you are out enjoying the hills this winter, you may come across some of our contractors, staff and volunteers carrying out scrub clearance. This winter, scrub clearance work will focus on conservation of the Grayling butterfly. This butterfly has declined in numbers by 50% in recent years, but has strong colonies on the hills. It likes sunny sheltered ground including short turf, bare ground and rock, so we will be clearing around some of the rocky outcrops. There will also be further coppicing works at Park Wood to benefit the flowers and butterflies there. Our workers do an excellent job, so be sure to give them some encouragement when you meet!

All About... ...The Bridge Club The Hills Improvers Bridge Club is an enthusiastic group that meets every Thursday in Mathon. The Chairman, Paul Clayburn, tells us more.

How did the club start?

In 2005 a small group met at Cradley Village Hall to play duplicate bridge, the club was soon set up and we moved to our home at Mathon Parish Hall in 2008. We’re fortunate to have my wife Mary, who trained with the English Bridge Union and has been teaching bridge for about ten years. She found that after beginners classes her students wanted to go on playing socially and improve their skills in a non- threatening atmosphere. We’re fortunate to have Mathon Parish Hall, which has good parking, comfortable chairs as well as wheelchair access and a disabled toilet. The village is also a central point for our members.

Who are your members?

Usually we have five or six tables a night, our forty members come from the villages around Mathon as well as Malvern. Some have gained confidence and experience and play at other clubs as well. Member’s comments include “ enjoyable”, “friendly” “helpful”, “positive progression” and “keeps the brain ticking over”.

How long does it take to learn?

You can pick up most card games in an evening, but not bridge. You never stop learning and that’s another reason I think people like it, you can never get bored of it. You need around ten lessons to learn the rudiments and from there you can start playing. For the Improver’s Club, although our standard is mixed, you will need to be able to complete a basic game. If you want to learn then please get in touch and we can help you, we regularly get a group together and run courses.

What is the attraction of bridge?

No two hands are ever the same and so you never know what’s coming! Its about trying to marshal your skills and knowledge to defeat the opposition, but it doesn’t always work so inevitably you come back for more!

What is your programme?

We meet on Thursdays, starting at 7.15pm and finish around 10pm. We break for a sociable drink half way through the evening. We have a mixed programme of duplicate bridge. We have two hosted evenings when you can always get a game. Once a month we have a teams’ evening which is hotly contested! On the first Thursday of the month we all cut for partners, so members get to know each other. When there is a fifth Thursday in the month we have an improvers’ workshop covering a topic of interest. The highlight of the year is the Christmas party with fun bridge.

We have a regularly updated website with the programme. Each week members can look at their results and check on how they compare with others.

We run two competitions with trophies as well as a slam race.
