Adopted Phone Box A Lifesaving Future for Wellington Heath’s Phone Box!

The traditional red phone box standing in the heart of Wellington Heath is a local landmark.

After its phone was de-commissioned, the Parish Council took the box over and is looking at using it to house a defibrillator, a piece of medical equipment which could save the lives of people suffering from sudden heart failure.

More and more of us have mobile phones.

According to Ofcom, which regulates the communications sector, 93 percent of adults own a mobile in the UK. It’s little wonder then, that the use of public phone boxes has dropped steeply.

In fact it’s dropped so steeply, that BT has been taking more and more of them out of service in recent years. In Wellington Heath the telephone kiosk next to Pool Piece is one such ‘victim’ of progress, but after de-commisionning, it has now been taken on by the parish council.

‘We held a survey in the village and forty percent of the people who responded were adamant it should stay’ says Marc Low, who is Chairman of Wellington Heath Parish Council. ‘A few people weren’t bothered about it, but red telephone boxes are an iconic, and in my view, an important heritage feature of this country and this one is a trusted icon of our village.’

landscaped picnic and nature area next to the box. ‘We even looked at placing a solar panel on the roof of the box, and using it as a place to charge batteries for mobile devices and gadgets’ says Marc, ‘but the equipment was a bit complex to install and maintain, and we felt it just wouldn’t get used enough. Many others just wanted to keep the box as a village heritage feature’

The phone box is a bit of a landmark in Wellington Heath and is sometimes used to give directions. Turn right, twenty metres past the box, and you’ll find the Farmer’s Arms Pub. Some locals use it to direct people to their homes.

According to Marc, BT handled the ‘adoption’ process very efficiently and he’s grateful for the opportunity, not least because many older residents look on the phone box with fondness.

Instead, the idea which looks most likely is to use the box to house a defibrillator unit. Defibrillators are becoming more and more common in public places and one was recently installed outside Cafe H20 in Upper Colwall. If someone is having a heart attack, the defibrillator delivers an electric pulse that can re-start the patient’s heart. With minimal training, members of the community can be taught to operate the equipment. In a rural area where paramedics are sometimes far away, it could literally be a lifesaver.

‘We asked people for their ideas about what we should do to give it a new lease of life’ he says. ‘A popular idea was to use it as a book exchange, but because the box isn’t insulated, the books would get cold and damp.’ Another idea for a magazine exchange was disregarded for the same reason. One suggestion was to store children’s outdoor toys and games in the box, which could be used on Pool Piece, the

The Parish Council is looking at the idea in more detail before a final decision is made, and in the meantime there are other issues to consider. ‘The phone box will need to be re-painted’ says Marc, ‘we need to use the right kind of paint to make sure it’s durable and the right shade of red! Once it’s painted the phone box will look fine once again and retain its rightful place at the heart of the village.’

Community News

New friendship group If you have lost a loved one, or live alone, then Christmas and New Year might have been tough, but Valentine’s Day might just be the toughest of all. Fortunately in Ledbury there are ways to end the loneliness as Clive Gunn from Ledbury Community Action explains.

Barbara Langlois is the organiser of The Evergreens, a weekly club that has been meeting for over 50 years. There’s a varied programme of events including visiting musicians and entertainers, easy physical activity, talks and trips. There’s always time for a chat and of course, tea and home-made cake. A lively bunch of volunteers give up their time every week and make things go with a swing.

Some people arrive by mobility scooter or are given a lift, but many more arrive by minibus.

This door to door escorted service is provided by Community Action Ledbury and the bus even has a lift for those who can’t get up steps.

Numbers at the club have swelled and there is now a waiting list, and so a new group is starting, initially supported by The Evergreens

and Community Action Ledbury. Its working title is The Ledbury Friendship Group and it will be an opportunity to come together in Ledbury but perhaps also offer an initial visit or two in the home to help people get back on their feet, or a telephone call when things are tough.

Perhaps for some, joining a newly formed group will be easier than an established one where everyone knows each other already. In addition the new club might appeal more to younger residents of Ledbury as you do not need to be elderly to be lonely. It is intended to have the first meeting on Monday 9th February at 11 o’clock in The Market Theatre Foyer. Coffee, tea and cake will be available, of course!

Recipe

Carrot, Parsnip & Ginger Soup Preparation time 30 minutes Serves 4 - 6

Ingredients

This recipe was kindly provided by Neil from The Nest near Ledbury, a Family Friendly Deli Cafe serving local and Artisan produce.

You can find The Nest on the Hereford Road, a few miles outside Ledbury.

2 carrots 2 sticks of celery 2 medium onions 800g parsnips A thumb-sized piece of fresh root ginger 2 cloves of garlic Olive oil 2 chicken or vegetable stock cubes Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 sprigs of fresh coriander

1. Peel and roughly slice the carrots.

Slice the celery. Peel and roughly chop the onions, parsnips and ginger. Peel and slice the garlic. Put a large pan on a medium heat and add 2tbsp of olive oil. Add all your chopped and sliced ingredients and mix together with a wooden spoon. Cook for around 10 minutes with the lid askew, until the carrots have softened but are still holding their shape, and the onion is lightly golden.

2. Put the stock cubes into a jug or pan and pour in 1.8 litres of boiling water from the kettle. Stir until the stock cubes are dissolved, then add to the vegetables.

Give the soup a good stir and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes with the lid on. Pick the coriander leaves and discard the stalks. Season with salt and pepper.

3. Using a hand-blender or liquidiser, pulse the soup until smooth. Divide between your serving bowls, drizzle with cream and sprinkle over the coriander leaves.

Ledbury Master’s House It has been a medieval home and a hospital, a rectory, a Ministry of Food office in World War Two and more recently a doctor’s surgery and council offices. Now, after a major restoration, The Master’s House takes on a new role as a community hub in the heart of Ledbury.

Seven centuries ago St Katherine’s Hospital Site was founded in Ledbury. Successive Masters managed the care provided and in 1487 a splendid home and administrative building was constructed for the then Master.

Over its 500 years it has undergone so many structural changes and additional building that it was completely hidden inside the much larger building.

Public engagement was an important part of the project – the restoration plans weren’t universally supported in the town, but Robert is confident that many people’s minds will be changed once the building is in use. ‘I was at a talk this afternoon’ he says, ‘and one person who’d been totally opposed to the idea came up to me and said that he’s changed his mind after seeing how it now looks.’

When it re-opens at the beginning of March, the Master’s House becomes the new home of Ledbury Library, offering far better access as well as modern facilities. The building will house a host of other organisations and will be the home of the Customer Service Centre for Herefordshire Council. There will be public meeting spaces and regular events will be held.

Community Action Ledbury will be moving into the building from where it will continue to operate its local transport and support services. The charity wants people to know it’s services will continue throughout the move, but if people have questions they are welcome to call on (01531) 635339 for Mobility or Minibuses and (01531) 635503 for Ring & Ride.

The Master’s House is one of the oldest buildings in Ledbury, which is quickly obvious when you see the oak beams and plaster that make up the central part of the building. The restoration has taken several years and gives particular satisfaction to the Friends of the Master’s House, an action group formed of local people who supported moves to restore the building when it was first talked about back in 2008. ‘There have been many ups and downs since then’ says Robert Waddington, the Chairman, ‘but once the decision was taken to restore the building and move the Library we have been pleased to support the process throughout.’

The Friends have worked closely with the contractors restoring the building and home given a voice to local people in the process. They have also taken hundreds of people on tours around the site throughout the restoration process.

Among the staff at Community Action Ledbury, Clive Gunn plays a rather unusual role in the re-opening of The Master’s House, as he stars in a film that will be seen by visitors coming to the newly re-opened building. ‘I was one of about seven people selected in auditions’ he says, ‘and in the film we all play the part of people associated with The Master’s House in the past.’

The film sees Clive dressed as George Hodnett, Master Cowper’s Cook, and has been made by The Rural Media Company based in Hereford.

As the building enters a new phase of use, Rachel Lambert, Heritage and Volunteering Coordinator is keen to hear the stories of its recent past. ‘It’s really important we don’t forget the part this building has played in Ledbury within living memory’ she says. ‘People might have a photo or a story of a time when they came here – even if they think it’s nothing much, please come and talk to me.’ There will be an ongoing project to create a digital archive of the Master’s House and volunteer help is needed with it. ‘Please come and get involved’ says Rachel, ‘because ultimately the work of creating a digital archive will help keep the history and the stories of this amazing building alive.’

When the Master’s House opens at the end of February there will be many different events in the building from music and talks to bounce and rhyme mornings in the library for babies. ‘We really want to see everybody come in and make full use of this amazing building’ says Rachel, ‘and create a few new traditions for the town.’

What was the Master’s House?

The building was part of a complex of buildings: nearby St Katherine’s Hall was originally a hospital founded in 1231 and the almshouses are still in use today. It held a wealthy estate but by 1384 it seems the money was being siphoned off for other purposes, and, following reforms made by John Prophet, the Dean of Hereford Cathedral, the Master was provided with a suitable house to ensure he was properly maintaining and running the Hospital and its properties.

The earliest part of The Master’s House dates from 1487 and was often added to over the following centuries. It remained in church hands until the estate was finally sold by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 1945.

News from Malvern

Chinese New Year Celebrations Sunday 22nd February North Malvern will resound to the sounds of traditional Chinese music at the start of February, as The Star Inn holds its annual celebrations to mark the start of the Chinese New Year.

For several years now, the Star Inn has hosted a traditional lion dance, which is performed by professional dancers brought in especially for the event. ‘They tell a traditional story’ says Ken Tse Wai Kwong, who runs the restaurant. ‘Their dance chases away bad things and brings luck and fortune, not only to our restaurant but also for everyone who attends!’

According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2015 is The Year of The Goat, and in China the start of the year is an important festival. It begins on the first day of the lunar month and the festivities continue until the moon is at its brightest. During the first week, friends and family will pay visits to one another and observe rituals which are designed to bring fortune in the coming year.

The annual event at The Star Inn has become a regular feature in North Malvern, and in some years attract a crowd of more than a hundred people. This year the celebrations take place on Sunday 22nd February, with the Lion Dance due to start at around 2.40pm outside the restaurant on Cowleigh Road.

A lunch buffet will be served at 12.30pm and 3.45pm and costs £12 per person. Tickets for the buffet should be booked in advance by calling (01684) 891918.

navigating big change

Six weeks ago Kaspa & I moved from our quiet little terraced house to a four storey property on the Worcester Road close to town - built around 1820 and run for many years as a guest house.

We are now living with three other residents and a couple of guests, holding Buddhist services for members of the public several times a week, and responsible for the financial, physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of our Buddhist Order’s only temple in the UK. Sometimes big change is something we choose, like deciding to start a new career, and sometimes it is thrust upon us, like relationship breakdowns or redundancies. Sometimes they are mostly positive, sometimes negative, and often a mixture of the two. Regardless of the details, major changes in our living conditions, responsibilities and day to day activities often have a bigger effect on us than we think they do.

The impact of change manifests in various ways, including the practical things we need to do and the way we react both physically and emotionally.

With our own move, there were plenty of practical tasks that we needed to negotiate – applying for planning permission, finding tenants for our old house, finding residents for the new temple etc. These took up a lot of time and energy and sometimes tested our patience.

But if I’m honest the real challenge for me was the psychological one. As I gradually got more used to the idea of being in this new position ‘stuff came up’– how I feel about living with other people, worries about getting things wrong in a more visible position…

This processing will continue, but I feel like the most challenging part is over. We had a good rest over Christmas and we’re already enjoying the new schedule here. In fact in between appreciating that amazing view and feeling extraordinarily grateful to be here, life feels quite ‘ordinary’ again. Humans are remarkably

adaptable creatures. Given plenty of time and a little bit of loving attention, we can adapt ourselves to circumstances we never thought we’d feel comfortable in.

If you are planning on a big change of your own, or if you’re already bang in the middle of one, here are my guidelines to staying sane.

1. Give yourself lots of slack. Now is probably not the time to start a new diet or catch up on your paperwork. Do what is necessary, and try to spend some extra time looking after your physical and emotional wellbeing – walks on the hills, coffee with friends, gardening, going to the gym, getting enough sleep etc.

2. Try to distinguish between the things that you are and aren’t in control of. Do what you can about the things you can, and hand the rest over to the Universe to handle. There’s no point in losing sleep over what might happen.

3. Ask for support. This support might be practical (a friend could have you round for dinner if you can’t think about cooking) or emotional (write down your feelings in a journal).

4. Remember gratitude. Some changes are easier to feel grateful for than others, but if we start getting tangled up in all the difficulties it can help to step back and see the advantages of your current situation.

Good luck with your own changes, and I hope you can see some light at the end of the tunnel. If you can’t see it yet, trust me - it is there!

Mathon Village Hall After a major refurbishment of its kitchen, Mathon Village Hall is hosting all kinds of classes, events and activities that take place every week. The improvements were made possible by a grant from The Big Lottery Fund and have created a popular venue in the village.

The new kitchen was put to its first big test just before Christmas with ‘Tea at the Ritz’.

This popular annual event in Mathon sees paying guests served high tea, with musical entertainment from a pianist and string quartet.

Further fundraising has provided a new modular stage unit for the hall, allowing musical performances and other events in the hall which need a raised platform.

Regular events include a bridge club, exercise classes and a fitness ‘bootcamp’ and it’s also available throughout the week and at a weekends for privately for children’s parties and family celebrations. One of the more lively weekly classes is a ‘Bootcamp’ run by Simon Gwilliam, with exercise, nutrition advice and fun three times a week.

Every Friday morning from 10.30am is the ChitChat Coffee Stop, a community coffee morning with free drinks and biscuits. ‘Everybody is welcome’ says Margaret Ainscough who looks after bookings at the hall. ‘It’s not only locals but anybody passing by as well as people from surrounding villages. It’s a great opportunity for a free coffee, biscuit and a catch-up!’

The running and maintenance of the hall is carried out by a dedicated team of volunteers.

‘We work really hard on it’ says Margaret, ‘one of our committee members regularly maintains the gardens while others look after the cleaning.’

The newly refurbished hall is available to hire and people hiring it get full use of all the kitchen equipment, crockery and the platform for performances.

www.cavesfolly.com 01684 540631 Once again spring is almost upon us and I am ordering seeds. It is heartwarming looking through all the glossy photos in the seed catalogues and planning the season ahead.

Although I have been growing plants for years, the germination of a seed is always a delight.

Each year I collect thousands of tiny seeds from my stock plants and produce thousands of plants, following in the same path as millions of farmers and growers over the centuries.

From tiny acorns grow giant oaks, and seeds the size of dust specks produce the hardiest of Alpine plants. For millions of years our planet has only survived because of the ability of plants to adapt and store seeds.

Recently a team of scientists uncovered a cache of the seeds of Silene Stenophylla, a flowering plant native to Siberia, that had been buried by an Ice Age squirrel near to a river in the far northeastern corner of Siberia. Tests using radiocarbon dating showed the seeds were 32,000 years old.

These seeds had been encased in ice 38 metres below the surface and were damaged. The scientists managed to extract material from the frozen seeds and successfully germinated the plants. These plants were identical to each other but had different flower shapes from the modern S. Stenophylla. They flowered and created seeds of their own.

This new study suggests that we can store seeds successfully in low temperatures for thousands of years. The most famous Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway or so-called Doomsday Vault is

already storing thousands of seeds for the future, or not!

Until this latest discovery, the oldest seed which had been grown was from a 2,000 year old date palm, when the seeds were found in a cool, dry area.

So the next time you are reading your glossy seed catalogue, just remember the incredible work of scientists and growers, that lead to perfect high yielding vegetables or the most floriferous flowers.

Now to practicalities. Here’s what needs to happen during February.

- Sow vegetable seeds indoors such as Tomato, Courgette, Squash, Cucumber, Aubergine, Lettuce and Broad beans. Prepare flower seeds for summer flowering perennials such as Penstemon, Lobelia or Gallardia. You need to finish weeding and preparing borders and seed beds. Roses, fruit trees and ornametal grasses need to pruned around now.

When March arrives, just sow everything indoors that you need to grow for the summer. Be sure to keep seedlings protected from late frosts and don’t let them dry out. Prune back lavender and penstemons.

You can wait until April to start with outdoor annual flowers and direct soil sown vegetables, when the soil is warmer.

There’s only a few weeks to go until Spring arrives and nature will once again surprise us with its ability to transform our world.

winter sunshine Presented by The Colwall Players Saturday 21st Febaury at Colwall Village Hall Colwall Players are bringing a little warmth and light into the village this February with ‘Winter Sunshine’, an evening of music, sketches and dramatic interludes on a seasonal theme. It promises to be an entertaining night.

The event follows on from last year’s February show ‘Funny Valentine’, an evening of variety entertainment. The evening proved to be a great success, so the Players are repeating the formula this year with Winter Sunshine. Individuals and groups have stepped forward to offer short performances, which are then chosen by a team of three co-ordinators who are organising the evening.

‘We were very happy with the positive response to last year’s event and decided to do it again’ says Nigel Turner from The Colwall Players.

‘It was an unknown for us but in the end it was alright on the night. A number of people said we should do it again so here we are. You start with nothing and then as more and more people come forward with ideas, see it steadily grow and come together. Last year there was quite a lot of music as well as sketches and it’s a formula we’ve settled on again.’

Traditionally the Players has always put on three productions a year, but rehearsals and performances in February could be beset with problems caused by bad weather. Nigel still remembers one year when heavy snow left some of the technical crew stranded. ‘Trying to complete rehearsals could be a nightmare if the weather prevented people from attending’ he says. ‘In any case, the Christmas break meant there was little time to fit in a rehearsal schedule.

With the new format, the individual sketches and musical numbers are rehearsed all over the area and are only brought together in the final stages of the rehearsal process.’

The ticket cost includes supper for the audience during the interval, which can be a highlight of the evening in itself. ‘Last year most of the cast ordered a meal as well’ says Nigel, ‘which meant they came out and chatted with the audience.

Then of course with five minutes of the interval remaining, they had to quickly shoot off and prepare for the second half!’

Winter Sunshine promises to be an evening of sparkling talent, lively humour and plenty of catchy music, to bring some warmth and glitter into the dull and chilly days of February. A melange of musical items,witty sketches and dramatic interludes on seasonal, or purely escapist, topics will make up the bill of fare.

The show is for one night only, on Saturday 21st February at 7.30 pm, in the Village Hall.

Flicks in the Sticks Flicks in the Sticks has a new programme of films at Bosbury Parish Hall for February and March.

Friday 20th February: About Time – A Family Comedy (Certificate 12A) At the age of 21, Tim’s father (Bill Nighy) tells him (Domhnall Gleeson) that the men in his family have always had the ability to travel through time. Tim discovers he can change what has happened in his own life - so he decides to make his world a better place by getting a girlfriend.

Sadly, that turns out not to be as easy as you might think. Tim finally meets the beautiful Mary (Rachel McAdams). They fall in love and then an unfortunate time-travel incident means he’s never met her at all. All About...

the electric car club Electraa is a newly formed group in Malvern promoting and advising on the use of electric vehicles (EVs). It was formed by five local men who met by chance at an EV event in Bristol and the groups’ objectives are the promotion and the enjoyment of EVs and their technology. Jim Murphy tells us more.

What have you done so far?

Our first event was attended by 100+ members of the public and several EV companies who enjoyed presentations from industry leaders.

These included The Morgan Motor Company and their production electric 3 wheelers - we will expect to have the 4 wheeler too this year.

There were also industry experts from the charge point network - there are over 7,500 across the UK of which 800+ are the rapid type enabling 80% charge in 30 mins, mainly in Nissan dealers and on the motorway network. There was also a Q&A session for the audience to interrogate the assembled panel of industry leaders.

We have also established local support from relevant Government bodies. The District Council had the foresight to install six chargers whilst central government money was available. Our local MP Harriett Baldwin is our patron. We attracted sponsorship from Indra - custom electric vehicle specialists.

And what are your plans for this year?

We have three events at the theatre this year in April, July and October. Each event will run lectures and demonstrations of the EV technology. 11th October will see our collaboration with The Malvern Festival of Innovation. July 19th sees the culmination of Malvern Civic Week for our open-to-all Electric Car day with lectures and demonstrations of the full range of UK electric cars. April 26th will be our first event this year showcasing amongst others the Tesla, Morgan, Nissan and Renault offerings alongside lectures from industry leaders and our famous Q&A session where the public can have their queries resolved.

Why is Malvern a good place for a group like yours?

Malvern is unique in having a large pool of technology aware citizens, largely due to its current work in the science park and QinetiQ but also retirees from the academic, radar

and defence industries. Geographically, it is in the centre of the Birmingham, Bristol, Wales, Stratford catchment so well suited with its entertainment capacity in the theatres to hold events here.

In other words, there is a ready made pool of local talent and the necessary infrastructure for us to deliver our programmes. Local government has committed to significant investment including more than £400,00 from Worcestershire County Council in rapid chargers which can charge a car to 80% in 30mins. Malvern Hills District Council has helped with the installation of six charging points in the car park opposite The Splash, and Malvern Hills Car Club now has an electric car for hire at Clarence Court.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas John Boyne’s highly acclaimed and best-selling international novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas will be appearing at Malvern Theatres from Tuesday 10th to Saturday 14th March, following its world stage premiere at Chichester in February.

Adapted for the stage by Angus Jackson, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is an emotive tale of an unlikely friendship between two innocent boys.

Set during World War II, the story is seen through the eyes of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of the commandant at a concentration camp, whose forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence has startling and devastating consequences. Bruno’s friendship with Shmuel takes him from innocence to revelation, revealing the poetic irony that through a child’s eye everyone can appear the same.

This play will be produced by The Children’s Touring Partnership, which is led by independent producer Fiery Angel, Chichester Festival Theatre and a consortium of major regional theatres. The Partnership have previously toured Goodnight Mister Tom, which won the Olivier Award for Best Entertainment and Family, and Swallows and Amazons.

Edward Snape for the Children’s Touring Partnership commented, ‘The Children’s Touring Partnership aims to produce and tour innovative, ambitious and engaging large scale theatrical productions for children and families. After two years of development we are very excited by this new commission which will bring this extraordinary story to life on stage for the first time’.
