Enjoy Local 1. heritage art trail St John's has a new heritage art trail. A giant pear and giant apple sculptures have been placed in Cripplegate and Pitmaston Parks, forming the start and end points of the new trail which highlights local history through a series of plaques.

These include details on roman finds and local industry, as well as commemorating Ernest Payne who won a gold medal for cycling at the 1908 Olympic games. You can get more details about the new trail by popping into the Tourist Information office at the Guildhall in the city centre.

2. concert The Elgar Chorale and Trianon come together for a concert of choral and instrumental music.

The Trianon Music Group is an orchestra and choir group visiting from Ipswich. They’ll join the locally based Elgar Chorale in a concert where each ensemble will perform its own works before coming together. 4. victorian christmas fayre Worcester’s Victorian Christmas Fayre returns this year on Thursday 30th November. More than 180 stalls are expected in the city centre, with the sights, sounds and aromas of Christmas.

The event continues until Sunday 3rd December.

3. events at st john's church St John's Church is hosting a series of social events this October and everybody is welcome. On Saturday 7th October there’s a Community Breakfast event from 8.30am until 11am, held at the church, which is absolutely free.

A week later, on Saturday 14th there’s a Harvest Fun Quiz. Starting at 7pm, its £10 a ticket which includes a meal, and you can enter individually or as a team of four. Saturday 28th October is Bingo and Bangers Night!

Starting at 6pm, there’s food and games of bingo with fun prizes. Tickets are £5 per person and children are welcome.

5. rspb local group events The Worcester and Malvern RSPB Local Group has a number of events and walks planned this autumn. On 10th October, there’s a morning walk looking for birds in heathland and woodland in North Worcestershire, while a month later on 18th November there’s a walk across Kempsey Common. There are also talks planned at Powick Parish Hall – on 11th October Chris Ward will be looking at various owl species while on 8th November Ian Butler takes you on a photographic journey entitled ‘Sea, Sun and Sandpipers’.

News from SHAW HEALTHCARE Dulcie Turner joined Shaw healthcare as manager of Red Hill Care centre nearly five years ago and is seen in the picture collecting her award at the Shaw healthcare regional ‘Star Awards’. Held recently in Ledbury, Dulcie was recognised as being an ‘Exceptional Leader’ Dulcie has dedicated her working life to helping others.

After leaving school she completed a two year Health and Social Care course. From there, Dulcie joined Worcestershire County Council and spent the next 24 years learning and working to increase her knowledge in care. Nearly five years ago Dulcie joined Redhill Care Centre as manager. Her role is predominantly supporting staff, supporting residents and ensuring the environment is safe to live and work in. Dulcie was asked to be a member of the Adult Safeguarding group for the county council two years ago and she is often asked to interact with the council regarding individual specialised assessments for Service Users.

MUSEUM OF ROYAL WORCESTER The Museum of Royal Worcester is about to undergo a major gallery refurbishment. A Heritage Lottery grant of £1.41million will go towards the total cost of £1.7million to create a new space which will bring the story of Worcester porcelain alive. Hidden stories and exhibits from the archives will illustrate the skills, techniques and developments of this remarkable factory. Audio recordings of former workers will describe the camaraderie and rivalry that existed between departments and show just how many skills and pairs of hands each piece took to create.

The work begins in November and there will be a a ‘pop up’ museum shop at the Guildhall on the High Street, with help from the city council.

SWAN THEATRE SCHOOL AUDITIONS The Swan Theatre School has been holding auditions for this year’s part-time course for potential actors.

Completed over the course of a year, it covers all areas of performance as well as aspects of theatre required by the industry today. In addition to acting, movement and voice classes, there are modules on classical theatre, voiceover, auditions, agents and future work. Based at the Swan Theatre, past graduates have gone on to appear in productions both here and overseas.

gardening club The gardening writer Dr Noel Kingsbury comes to Powick this autumn to give a special ‘celebrity’ lecture.

n

oel is known internationally as a writer about plants, gardens and the environment. With some 25 books to his credit, he writes for a number of specialist publications and newspapers including The Daily Telegraph and The New York Times.

Noel also works as a consultant in the fields of garden development and maintenance, with a special interest in promoting quality public planting.

His writing has been described as ‘among the best you will find in the English language’ and on Saturday 21st October he’ll be giving a talk entitled ‘Women, Men and Gardening’ to the Black Pear Gardening Club in Powick.

Noel says the talk is ‘intended as an entertaining bit of sociology, noticing the differences in how

men and women have gardened differently down the ages, how things are changing and how things are different from country to country.’ It promises to be both educating and very entertaining!

The Black Pear Gardening Club hosts regular talks and on November 18th the next talk is entitled ‘An Afternoon With Reg Moule’ after its Annual General Meeting. Non-members are always welcome to come along, meetings start at 2.30pm at Powick Parish Hall.

worcester woodland archers This friendly, inclusive club is open to archers of all ages and abilities from beginner to expert. Based near Bransford, the club takes part in competitions, runs courses and organises archery taster events. Abby Allsopp tells us more.

What is Field Archery?

Worcester Woodland Archers are an NFAS (National Field Archery Association) field archery club – field archery involves shooting at targets at varying distances, often in woodland and rough outdoor terrain. British field archery has absolutely nothing to do with hunting, it's a sport of archer versus course-layer! We're based near Bransford, Worcester, and have 15 acres of woodland to shoot in. We shoot on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. We have over 50 members, both men and women, from 8 years old through to retired members.

What are the different kinds of archery that take place?

Our members shoot all types of bows, from traditional longbows with wooden arrows fletched with feathers, right through to high-tech compound bows with sights, stabilisers and carbon-fibre arrows. And everything in between – recurve bow, American flat-bow, primitive bow, crossbow, horse-bow… whatever type of bow you are interested in, there is a category for you!

What different levels of ability do you cater for?

We cater for the full range of ability. We regularly run beginners’ courses for those new to archery

(dates on our website). A number of our members shoot just for fun, and we also have some great competitive archers who have been successful in national field archery competitions.

What is the pleasure of archery in an outdoor setting?

Field Archery is a great individual challenge, but also has the significant advantage that all bow types and age groups can shoot on the same course in the same group – this makes it an outstanding family activity where everyone can genuinely experience a challenging and enjoyable time. It is also a super excuse to be in the outdoors, experiencing the changing seasons and appreciating the wildlife. There is nothing quite like walking through the bluebells, feeling the sun beaming through the gaps in the leaf canopy or the scrunching of autumn leaves and enjoying time with new friends.

Theatre

st john's players On February 14th 1949 a small group of enthusiastic amateur actors formed a drama group. They called themselves the St. John’s Players to reflect their links with both St. John’s Church and the old St. John’s Primary School.

Sixty eight years later, the group is still going strong. Over that time it has performed regularly in various venues. Chief among these has been the Swan Theatre, where the Players have been on stage almost every year since its foundation.

Their next production is Alan Ayckbourn’s Season’s Greetings this November. The play’s Director Christine King tells us more.

we last performed this play 23 years ago! It’s full of Alan Ayckbourn’s dark humour and is set in a family home over Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. As with most families there’s an eclectic mix of characters and things gradually become very fraught before a dramatic twist of events.

Christmas can be a fraught time for many people and this show explores how people get on – as well as how they don’t.

Each show we do is very different to direct. Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to be involved with quite a few comedies including ‘Allo ‘Allo, The Vicar of Dibley and Up Pompeii. We have a very experienced cast but always welcome new members. We are a small group and get on well.

For me, it’s very much a family affair. My husband and youngest son are also involved and we have been in the group for the past 36 years, although we have two or three members who have been in the group much longer. We do everything – I am directing, but last time I stage-managed and before that I was acting. There are many different roles we all share from lighting to sound to props – everyone is happy to take on whichever role is needed.

I think that’s why we’ve lasted so long as well as the fact that people are really dedicated to what we do. Two days before a production starts we go into the Swan Theatre on Sunday at 9am and start building the set. By Sunday night we hold a

technical rehearsal, with a full dress rehearsal on Monday before we open on the Tuesday.

It’s an intense process but the adrenaline keeps you going and it is great fun! It might look chaotic, but its organised chaos. Although we’re an amateur group, the process is exactly the same as for any company whether amateur or professional. We have to publicise the show and cover the costs of booking the theatre.

We put on two productions each year, one on the main stage of the theatre and another in the Vesta Tilley Studio each spring. And the secret of keeping an amateur dramatic company going for 68 years? We’re a small, tight-knit group and everybody mucks in. We have some really talented individuals from all walks of life who all have theatre in their blood.

Group

good vibrations Good Vibrations is a unique choir, mixing singers and signists. Formed by the locally based charity Deaf Direct, the choir has been holding regular rehearsals and is about to give its first performance. Sarah Hindley tells us more.

How did the idea for a choir came about?

Deaf Direct has performed signed Christmas Carols at the Victorian Fayre for many years. In the past, these were signed by enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers and were performed with backing tapes. However, as the signed carols were such a hit, we decided we would take the idea further and have a regular choir who performed British Sign Language interpretations of songs, combined with live singing. The aim of the choir is to produce high quality music which deaf and hard of hearing people can participate in, as they can traditionally face barriers to accessing other types of music and arts activities.

We are the only bi-lingual, singing and signing choir in Worcestershire, so we are very unique!

When did you start rehearsing, and how has it progressed?

Our signers first started rehearsing in September last year. After some teething problems, our singers started rehearsing earlier this year. We now have nearly 30 members of the choir – half singing, half signing – and the choir is a real mixture of deaf, hard of hearing and hearing people.

What have been the challenges and the strengths of forming such a special choir?

We initially had to change our rehearsal times for our singers from an afternoon to an evening. We

also struggled initially to find a leader with the right qualifications to lead the singing members of our choir. Fortunately, we found one in Philip Prince, who is also the leader of St. Richard’s Hospice Choir. Our strength is definitely the passion and dedication of our members and choir leaders. Without them, the project would have fallen apart. They have persevered through our beginnings, through the tough times and have now blossomed into a choir which is accessible for all, regardless of their level of hearing. We are grateful for their hard work and their performances really are quite something to behold!

Good Vibrations’ inaugural concert takes place at 7.30pm on Friday 10th November at St Paul’s Church in the city centre. Tickets cost £8, to include refreshments, with proceeds donated to Deaf Direct. The programme includes a mixture of tunes from the spiritual to pop classics and promises a night of singing or signing along! The choir will be joined by Worcester Ukulele Club.

Local Talent:

garrington T jones Garrington T Jones has his son to thank for getting him back into the local music scene.

ack in the seventies he played in a number of bands around Worcester including one with the unlikely name of Thunderbox! After that life got in the way and he didn’t pick up a guitar again until 2007.

At the time, his son Ryan wanted to become a sound technician and began working with other musicians. Watching them perform, Garrington decided it was time to dust down his guitar case and start playing again.

‘It was Carol Lee Sampson who inspired me to pick up my guitar and have a go’ he says. (Carol is another amazing local singer and guitarist) In February 2008 he got on stage again for the first time in nearly three decades and since then he’s not looked back.

Garrington is very dedicated to crafting his performance style. ‘I have to work at it all the time’ he tells me. ‘I’ll play for two or three hours every day, otherwise my fingers will go soft! It’s a case of constantly exercising the voice, the fingers and the brain.’

A lot of his time goes into writing lyrics which have a definite storytelling thread running through them. He says it means a lot to deliver a song that will inspire the listener, perhaps even making them curious enough to find out more about the story it tells.

Although he often plays solo, Garrington did spend a few years playing in a band with another strange name. ‘I was asked to play at a Blues festival at a time when my sound was very folky’ he remembers. ‘I called Noor Ali (another great local guitarist) and asked how many blues songs he could play. Between us we could manage five each which was enough for a set, so we went along and managed to pull it off. After that someone asked me if he could book our band so I made up the name Stompin’ on Spiders!’

Stompin’ on Spiders was eventually put on hold, but Garrington likes to perform with others and

he’s been doing what he calls a ‘G&T mix’ with Tone Tanner, when they turn up at a venue and take it in turns to play a number. He’s very grateful to the many other musicians around him who inspire him and help him to write and perform. Without them, he says he couldn’t do it nearly as well.

Since March he’s been busy working on eleven new tracks with the expert assistance of Dave Draper, an opportunity that Garrington describes as ‘a real privilege’. The new album comes out this October and it’s called Abyssinia, inspired in part while watching an old episode of the classic tv series MASH. I’ve had the chance to hear some of it, and I have to say it’s going to be a cracker!

Recipe

MEG'S AUTUMN GRANOLA Always on a mission for something nutritious and sustaining to feed my family for breakfast, I have discovered the joy of making my own breakfast cereal, or to give it a trendy name 'Granola'.

The joy here is that you can interpret this recipe to suit you and your family's likes and dislikes.

For us, we use a combination of different cereals with nutritious quinoa, nuts and seeds. Exploring new British grown products like delicious naked barley flakes and puffed quinoa, but leaving out dried fruits because our smallest son will complain!

And it is worth saying that you really can save yourself a fortune by making you own. I am even considering giving granola in pretty Kilner jars for Christmas!

Ingredients 200g rolled oats 200g naked barley flakes 100g puffed quinoa 100g whole almonds 50g sesame seed 50g sunflower seed 100g apple compote* 2 tbsp cold pressed rapeseed oil 2 tbsp honey 125 ml maple syrup

* to make apple compote (or any fruit compote) chop prepared fruit into a saucepan with a little water and simmer for a few minutes on a low heat until the fruit is soft. Blending with a hand blender is ideal to prepare a smooth compote for this recipe. Always taste the cooked fruit before adding sugar, you may find you don't need any at all! Compote will keep refrigerated for a week and is delicious served with Greek yoghurt for a quick dessert.

To make the granola first turn on your oven to 170•C and line two baking trays with baking parchment.

Mix all the dry ingredients together in a large mixing bowl ensuring the spices are well combined. Add the oil, compote, honey and syrup, again mixing thoroughly. Although this is a bit sticky, I often find that hands are easiest for this process.

Spread the mixture evenly out on the lined trays and bake in the oven for 20 minutes, then turn the mixture over using a spatula to break it up and keep the texture loose. Bake for another 1020 minutes until golden brown and crunchy.

Allow to cool fully before storing in an airtight container. A large Kilner jar is ideal and will look beautiful on your breakfast table!

nutrition success It's NOT All About The Food!

You know, we’ve got this eating healthy thing all wrong. There’s two halves to it, and one of those halves NEVER gets mentioned.

Probably because it has NOTHING to do with food. Literally nothing to do with what you eat, how much, when or any of that stuff. I know - it’s a bit of a shocker, right?

This is what we’ve become accustomed to think of when we think of healthy eating: Vegetables.

Lean protein. Smart carbs. Good fats.

We consider habits like: Drink 2 litres of water.

We work on rules like: Keep sugar intake low.

All this stuff is about the WHAT. The foods, the quantities, the macros. Focusing on this was not what helped me crack my thorny issues like eating a whole box of Cadbury’s Roses because it was Friday - eating ALL of the food when I felt lonely or scared - being ‘good’ all week and then binging at the weekend.

Yup, that was me. Don’t think I haven’t been there - I have. I know what it’s like to feel out of control with food. I also know how to come out the other side, and that’s what swings us into the second half of healthy eating, the half that has nothing at all to do with actual food.

• eating mindfully and slowly. Being present with your meals, rather than wolfing something down whilst tearing to your next appointment • being tuned into your internal body cues and using these, rather than trackers or calorie counts, to regulate your food intake. Are you hungry? Are you full?

• not thinking of food as either ‘good’ or ‘bad’.

Carrots are just carrots, brownies are just brownies. They both have their place

All these behaviours, mindsets, abilities whatever you want to call them - are what make you a healthy eater. Further than that - in my view, eating the right kinds of foods (all that protein/carb/veg/fat stuff) - that’s a SYMPTOM of being a healthy eater.

• not overthinking and obsessing over food, but not underthinking it and throwing caution to the wind either

So, although it’s not often said, both sides of ‘healthy eating’ need attending to if you have a rubbish diet you want to fix.

It looks like this:

• knowing how food affects your fitness, energy levels, mood, health, mental aptitude and so on • not looking for emotional solace from food or using it as a substitute for fixing an actual problem • eating predominantly when you are hungry. Not being scared of hunger. Being able to sit with it when necessary

Daisy and Hoke’s relationship gets off to a rocky start, but as times change across a 25 year backdrop of prejudice, inequality and civil unrest, a profound and life-altering friendship blossoms in this acclaimed comedy drama.

From its landmark off-Broadway production in 1987 to the remarkable success of the 1989 film version, which was the winner of four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Driving Miss Daisy has touched the hearts of millions worldwide.

From her multi award-wining performance in I, Claudius to the epic film Dune, from a Tony nominated performance of Marlene on Broadway to Cabaret in the West End, Dame Siân Phillips has enjoyed a dazzling career which spans more than seven decades.

RSC actor and legendary children’s show presenter, Derek Griffiths’ numerous West End credits include the original production of Beauty and the Beast in which he originated the role of Lumière and the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
