Shakespeare’s King John will be performed in Worcester Cathedral this October, in the shadow of the King’s tomb. Presented by Worcester Repertory Company, performances take place between Tuesday 18th and Saturday 22nd October. Tickets cost £16 or £12.50 for the matinee performance on Thursday.

Worcester hosts two spectacular fireworks displays on November 5th this year. The event at Sixways Stadium features popular film and cartoon characters – doors open at 5pm with the display taking place at 7pm. Tickets are on sale from the start of October, see the advert on Page 35 for further details.

Meanwhile on Pitchcroft the Worcester Round Table hosts its annual bonfire and display, raising money for local good causes. The gates open at 5.30pm with the display taking place at 7.30pm.

2. folk concert Local folk musicians Horizon Lights will be celebrating their tenth anniversary with a concert on Wednesday 12th October. Joining them for this special performance is the well-known accordion player Karen Tweed. It takes place at The Falcon in Bromyard, the doors open at 7pm. 4. The Battle of Orgreave exhibition The Battle of Orgreave is a new exhibition of work by the Turner Prize winning artist Jeremy Deller. His work is based around a huge re-enactment of one of the key battles of the Miner’s Strike in 1984. More than 800 people participated including former miners and former police officers, reliving events they had originally taken part in. The exhibition at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum continues until 26th November. Entry is free Monday to Saturday from 10.30am until 4.30pm. www.museumsworcestershire.org.uk

5. Accordion concert with a difference The Number 1 Ladies Accordion Orchestra is coming to Worcester this October. Described as an all-squeezing, cake-loving, tea-drinking band of lovely talented ladies, they will be playing music from around the world arranged for multiple accordions, played with sensitivity, versatility and fun!

The concert on Sunday 9th October is at the Church of St. Martin with St. Peter on London Road and starts at 3pm. Tickets are £7.50 each with free entry for accompanied children under 16 years old.

SNOWDROP PLANTING FOR CHARITY St Richard’s Hospice is asking local nurseries and Forest schools to plant Snowdrop bulbs. Once the bulbs are planted, children can watch the snowdrops grow and help support the work of the hospice with a suggested donation of £2.

WORCESTER PARKRUN The Worcester Parkrun is a weekly running event which is completely free to take part in. Starting every Saturday at 9am, the 5 kilometre course winds its way around the Worcester Woods Country Park.

The event is run by volunteers and everyone is welcome to join whether they are seasoned athletes or completely new to running.

Walking for health It’s a chance to get fitter, enjoy a chat with the other walkers and explore the local area. Every Monday, the Walking for Health group sets out from Lower Wick for a sixty minute walk. Mary Devereux is one of the walk leaders and tells us more.

Why do people come along?

This is a very enjoyable way to maintain fitness – it’s good for you! A lot of those who join us are older, retired people, many of whom are in their 70s. Some are alone – perhaps widowed or divorced – and this is a chance to spend time with others out in the fresh air. Walking has been proven to be good for you both mentally as well as physically. It’s good for your weight and you feel better after being out on a lovely sunny morning.

Even during the colder months it’s enjoyable to get outdoors and be in the company of others when the alternative is to stay at home. Of course we always dress for the weather and wear suitable clothing, stout comfortable shoes or trainers, and a hat. Some routes may be muddy or slippery when wet, walking boots or wellies are recommended.

Tell us about a typical walk…

We head out for sixty minutes which suits a lot of people. Everyone is welcome and we crisscross the local area, walking along the river as far as Chapter Meadows and on public footpaths crossing fields in the area. After we’ve finished we return to the Age UK office for a chat over hot drinks and some biscuits. The walks take place every Monday morning at 10.30am, except for bank holidays. Once or twice a year we also have a social get together and I’ve already booked our Christmas do for December!

How did you get involved?

I first came to Worcester in 1953 to commence my training as a nurse. After raising two children I worked abroad but eventually moved back here and I’ve long since been retired. I’ve done quite

a bit of volunteer work locally for the National Trust and at Huntingdon Hall but then Walking for Health was looking for help and I thought I’d try something new. I underwent a day’s training and together with Jane Evans we lead the weekly walks from the offices of Age Concern Herefordshire and Worcestershire at Lower Wick.

What do people need to do to join?

We do need to know if you have specific health issues and if that’s the case we’ll complete a health questionnaire beforehand to make sure you’ll be okay when you come on our walks. We welcome people who bring their dog, as long as the dog is well behaved and stays on a lead as we do cross through farmers’ fields. We are keen to welcome new members and we generally go out regardless of the weather conditions – unless it’s absolutely pouring down!

Autumn’s looking busy for Skewwhiff. After wrapping up the festival season at Something Else in The Dean and Worcester Music Festival, there’s a couple of local shows and some further afield as they join Dodgy on part of their nationwide tour.

I

It’s fair to say that Skewwhiff is a band admired far and wide by people in the music business as well as the audiences who come to see them. They’re regularly invited to play at festivals around the country and support touring bands, they get played on BBC 6 Music and they have a following who will always turn out to see them play in this region.

They originally came together thanks to mutual admiration among the band’s members. Mark Hogan was going along to watch Glazz and Sammy perform with another band in Worcester – it turned out they were coming along to the gigs he was playing with another band!

‘They asked me if I wanted to join as a guitarist – but I don’t play it!’ laughs Mark, who was playing bass guitar at the time. He bought himself a new instrument and got up to speed with it while Hannah, who’d been a backing vocalist with Glazz and Sammy, stepped up to front the band.

Skewwhiff was born!

Six years on and they’re still together, in exactly the same line-up, which goes to show how well they can work and play together. They’ve been writing a lot of new material recently in the studio basement of 'Skewwhiff Towers' where they all live. Skewwhiff will release a couple of free downloads very soon as a precursor to the follow up album to their debut 2014 long player 'Nice Little Upper'.

When it comes to their influences, Mark says its bands like The Pixies, The Fall, Talking Heads and a lot of post-punk music, but even he admits their sound goes a lot wider than that. There’s a definite nod to ska and reggae in some of it but they don’t really stick to a single formula when it comes to their songs.

Perhaps that’s why such a wide range of people like them – it’s not just the fact they write a good tunes but they constantly seem to be coming up

This autumn they’ll be touring around a bit supporting Dodgy for a couple of gigs, followed by a full two hour show at Worley's The Swan in Stourport, as well as playing at the Marrs Bar on October 27th when crusty legends Back to the Planet will be along to promote their new EP. Recipe

meg's Roast Chicken Chowder This recipe is robust and unfussy, so can take alterations to suit personal taste, which is why the ingredients list may seem a little simple!

Method

It is perfect for the autumn when a Sunday roast dinner leaves behind the potential for a comforting bowl of soup, ideal as a healthy snack for hungry children at the end of a long school day.

Shape and adapt it to suit your family. The idea is of hearty vegetables in a good stock with some seasonal corn tossed in when available. A little garlic, some chilli, other vegetables would all add a different twist!

Serves 4 Ingredients • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 onion, chopped • 2 carrots, peeled and chopped • 2 potatoes, peeled and chopped • 2 cobs of corn • left-overs from a roast chicken • 1 litre of light stock (vegetable or made from the roast chicken carcass) • freshly milled sea salt and black pepper

Blanch the prepared cobs of corn in a pan of boiling water. When cool enough to handle, cut away the corn kernels by holding the cob firmly on a chopping board and cutting down the side of the cob. Reserve the corn and discard the remaining cob.

Warm the olive oil in a large saucepan on a gentle heat, then add the chopped onions, stirring them around until softened. Add the peeled and evenly chopped carrot and potato, stir together.

Pour in the stock, ideally a stock made from the stripped chicken carcass or a vegetable bouillon and hot water if you prefer.

Bring to simmering point and allow to cook until the vegetables are soft. Roughly blend the vegetable soup and then add the chopped chicken and corn kernels. Warm the soup through and season to taste.

Serve with slices of good, crusty, bread and butter.

the swan theatre's Poet in residence What do poets do all day? In fact, what do they do over the course of a whole year? We put the question to Ben Parker, who is The Swan Theatre’s Poet in Residence for 2016.

What exactly do you do as the theatre’s Poet in Residence?

Although I am ‘in residence’, I’m not there all the time. Instead, when I visit I spend time in some of the backstage areas. I’m interested in the spaces less often seen, the hidden parts, the aspects of the theatre that people might not know. I make notes as I go around and turn them into poems later on. My remit is to write ten poems and to publish them at the end of the year.

It is certainly one of the least attended art forms when compared with music or the visual arts.

Poetry doesn’t get the same media coverage. It’s sometimes perceived as being more difficult to understand than reading a novel or watching a film, but that becomes self-perpetuating as people don’t engage with it. Poetry might only be heard in school, at weddings or funerals and so people are not used to it in daily life.

What is your favourite part of The Swan?

Why did you chose to become a poet?

Some of the backstage areas have a magic of their own. The workshop has scenery from all the different productions piled up together, in the paint room you have colours mingled together that you would never see anywhere else. There’s a slightly spooky feel to the costume store, with all the empty outfits hanging up. I will be careful not to break the illusion of theatre by exposing these places but instead I hope to reveal their magic.

I can pin down the exact moment. I was at a party and overheard two people discussing a film about the poet Sylvia Plath. I’d never thought about poetry before, but I discovered recordings online of her reading her work and it blew me away. Suddenly I realised you can enjoy poetry!

Listening to poetry means letting go and enjoying the sound, the rhythms and the language. I think people need to stop worrying about understanding a poem the first time they read it. Return to it again and you get more out of it each time. After all, if you have a music album you listen to it again and again, it grows on you. Poetry is my favourite form of entertainment – it’s another way of experiencing someone’s imagination.

What about front of house?

I will be engaging with some of the productions.

I’m really interested to see Shakespeare’s King John which will be performed in view of his tomb in Worcester Cathedral.

Although my residency finishes at the end of the year, I shall be working with Swan Youth Theatre, working with them on a performance next Spring.

If there’s interest in open mic nights I might return to read poetry as well.

you gotta find the love

By Tracy J Reck, Exercise & Nutrition Coach in Worcester It’s happening again - the nights are drawing in, the clock is readying itself to go back and the darkness is on its way. You know as well as I do that this is a habitbreaking time of year, where a lot of people’s efforts to keep control of their eating habits go up in smoke.

h

ow about we try a new approach this year? A new mindset that, if settled in your head, could really help you keep a handle on your eating habits, not just this winter, but forever?

The usual mindset we take into the winter is one where we think and talk about foods that are indulgent as everything that's right with the world. Often I'll hear my clients and others talk about foods they are hoping to lessen their grip on, like chocolate, wine and crisps, using words like "gorgeous", "delightful", "amazing" and other such appreciative language.

In contrast, the words and phrases used to describe foods they want to build a solid relationship with are less glorious, less colourful, less inviting.

Here’s the rub: language is important. If you use mean words about foods, words that conjure impressions of deprivation, boredom, bland flavourlessness, hard work and unwelcome expense, then that will colour your experience of those foods. Whereas, if you use words that generate images of opulence, luxury, a wonderful taste experience and so on, those words do the job of preparing you to enjoy the food you are eating.

There are two points here.

First, change the way you talk about healthy food.

A ripe, fresh, bright satsuma is not a poor relation of a chocolate brownie. It's a beautiful explosion

of juice and sweetness that should be celebrated.

Speak of that.

Second, we can't just change the words. We need to back those words up with the correct experience, one that doesn't contradict. Seek out the very best taste sensations you can find with these healthy foods you want to fall in love with.

Healthy eaters aren't people who have decided to forgo taste and comfort in an effort to “eat clean".

They aren't dressing in scratchy hessian sacks, consuming nutritionally-complete gruel and opting out of what it really means to really enjoy life. Food isn't intended to be self-flagellation. It's meant to enrich the wonder of life. Somewhere along the way, we've got it into our heads that the only food experiences that do that are loaded with sugar, fat and carbs. But it's just not true.

Try it. Figure out how to make healthy food as tasty as possible. It's not like there aren't a million cookbooks out there that can help you with that.

But also take care to speak of the foods you want to learn to love with words that celebrate and appreciate.

singing & sign choir Deaf Direct, your local, deaf-led charity supporting people with hearing loss, has launched its very first singing and sign language choir! The choir will combine live singing with signed translations of popular songs to provide a complete visual and aural experience for audiences.

T

he choir has been established due to the previous success of Deaf Direct’s signed Christmas carols. Every year, Deaf Direct performs at the Victorian Fayre in Worcester, where talented volunteer carol signers perform Christmas songs such as Walking in a Winter Wonderland and White Christmas. The response to these performances has been phenomenal.

The new choir plans to build on this experience but to take the musicality further by using live singing for our performances rather than just backing tracks. The choir’s first performance will be on 24th November at the Opening Ceremony of the Victorian Fayre at the Guildhall. There will be further performances on Saturday 26th November at the Victorian Fayre at 2pm and 3pm.

Membership of the choir is open to anyone – both adults and children - and we will be accepting new members from 2017. All songs will be taught

from scratch. You do not need to be able to read music to become a singer and our choir leader asserts that anyone can sing. You also do not need prior knowledge of British Sign Language in order to become a signer – just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

The hope is that the new choir will break down barriers between the hearing and the hearing loss worlds. We want to prove that hearing loss is not an obstacle in enjoying or being part of musical activity. Our choir will be fun and unique, and our performances will increase awareness of hearing loss and will also raise much-needed funds for Deaf Direct so that we can continue to support local people living with hearing loss.

Youth Theatre Vamos Theatre is looking for recruits to join its Young People’s Theatre group. imed at young people aged between 9 and 14 years old, the weekly sessions at Worcester Arts Workshop will introduce young people to the basics of mask theatre and provide a solid and creative platform for other theatre and physical theatre skills.

Participants will get the chance to work with the professional production team from Vamos and work towards a performance at the end of term.

Last year they performed as part of a consortium of youth theatres in the Physical Fellowship at The Belgrade Theatre in Coventry. Comments from previous participants include ‘I have relished learning ensemble work and being able to support each other on stage no matter what is thrown at you’.

The sessions start on September 28th and will be held weekly on Wednesdays between 5.30pm until 6.45pm until December 14th. Children from

several Worcester primary and secondary schools are already signed up. The first trial session is offered free of charge, after that the cost is £50 per term, and members can take advantage of a monthly payment system to assist with costs.

St Richard's invites you to join their fun run or walk this Halloween Trick or treaters of all ages can join in the fun on Sunday 30th October at Worcester Woods and Countryside Centre, with activities starting at 3pm. Fancy dress is order of the day, with prizes for the best costumes. Enjoy traditional Halloween games and face painting.

It is 1989 and a seemingly invincible Prime Minister has sacked her Foreign Secretary Geoffrey Howe, thinking she had nothing to fear from him; his speaking skills had, famously, been compared to those of a dead sheep. But inspired by his wife Elspeth - a formidable and witty feminist, whose relationship with Thatcher was notoriously frosty – Howe overcame his limitations to destroy Mrs Thatcher’s political career…and also his own.

Dead Sheep portrays the true story of how Mrs. Thatcher, the most divisive Prime Minister of modern times, was brought down by her one time friend and political soul mate Geoffrey Howe. Using imagined dialogue to portray private scenes between the main protagonists, it recreates the events leading up to Howe’s famous 1990 speech, in which he criticised Thatcher for undermining policies on economic and monetary union in Europe, ultimately leading to her downfall and resignation.
