Helping both men and women deal with the trauma of a relationship that has irretrievably broken down.

By Malvern Branch Co-ordinator: Gill Owen I got involved with Divorce Recovery Workshop (DRW) 6 years ago when a friend who had been on the course found it so inspirational she wanted to set up a local branch in Malvern, which is the only branch in Worcestershire.

The workshops are run by experienced volunteers who have all been through the breakdown of a long term relationship and attended the workshops. Although my own divorce was a long time ago, I had to attend the workshops before becoming a facilitator.

I was amazed to discover just how many emotions I had buried. Once I had completed the workshop I knew I had come to terms with my past and could let it go. When you go through a breakup you don’t always realise how much grief, resentment and anger you hold on to or how emotionally and physically exhausting it can be.

How can Divorce Recovery Workshop help?

The breakdown of a long term relationship is a form of bereavement; yet unlike the death of a partner, you are often expected to carry on as normal. Whilst friends and family can be supportive, they don’t always understand how you feel and even your best friend will eventually have had enough of you going over and over what has happened!

Anyone who has been through the heartache of an irretrievable breakup is welcome at DRW, even if you are going through the divorce or if it was years ago. DRW will help

you cope with the many different emotions: shock, disbelief, rejection, anger, bitterness and guilt. You will gain a better understanding of what you are going through and be offered strategies to help you cope.

What actually happens at a workshop?

The course consists of six sessions covering: • Is this really happening to me?

• Coping with your 'Ex' • Assuming new responsibilities • Letting go and forgiveness • Family matters • Thinking about new relationships Participants watch a DVD on each topic and then divide into small groups with 2 facilitators per group. Everything said in the group is strictly confidential and no one is pressured to talk if they don’t want to.

When is the next one taking place?

The next DRW course will run on 3 Saturdays, fortnightly, on 14th and 28th October and 11th November 2017: 2 sessions per day with lunch in between.

Is there a charge for the Workshop and where does it take place?

DRW is a non-profit making registered charity but to cover our running costs we ask participants to pay £60 for the entire course.

The venue is in Churchdown Road, Malvern and there is a free car park.

Worcester is a-buzz with activity during August and September. The popular Worcester Festival returns in the middle of the month, offering almost two weeks of entertainment around the city. Whether it’s watching the ancient craft of stained glass restoration in the cathedral, learning about our civil war history, or simply enjoying street performers, there are many things to see and do! In September the Worcester Music Festival returns, when musicians from the city and further afield perform dozens of free gigs, raising money for charity. This year they’ll be helping St Paul’s Hostel which for the past forty years has been helping homeless people in the city.

To transfer or not to transfer, that's the question

By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall eports suggest over 210,000 people will transfer their final salary pensions this year compared with some 80,000 in the tax year 2016/17. The big question is, should you join them and jump on this very complex band wagon?

The truthful answer is……maybe! The decision very much comes down to your own personal set of circumstances. A broad-brush answer of yes or no just doesn’t cut it, it needs careful consideration, looking at the pros and cons, taking into account numerous personal hopes, fears and requirements. Only then can the question begin to be answered.

Final Salary Pensions As the name suggests, these ‘gold plated’ schemes are linked to your salary and years in the scheme and have often been heavily subsidised by the employer to ensure they will pay the guaranteed income when you reach the stated retirement age, usually 60 or 65. They usually provide a spouses benefit of 50% should the member pre-decease their spouse, for the rest of their life. There are other lucrative benefits like a tax free lump sum at outset and indexation, however the key word with a final salary pension is ‘guarantee’, they provide a guaranteed income in retirement.

Why the transfer conundrum?

The reason there is such an increase in those transferring away from these very lucrative pension schemes is twofold. One reason is that the incomes they provide are linked to Gilt rates which in turn are influenced by the Bank of England’s interest rate, which is currently at a historic low of just 0.25%. This leads to substantial transfer cash values which can seem very tempting and have probably been further incentivised by the employer to tempt you to move away, thus removing the liability from their books.

The other reason, and a very important one, is pension freedom. This now allows for these funds, once transferred away, to be accessed earlier. You have the freedom to draw down income or lump sums to suit yourself, give tax free income to your spouse, and probably most important of all, allow you to leave the fund to your children, grandchildren or whomever else you elect, in a tax efficient manner.

The important factor to consider, and one which should be at the forefront of your mind is whether you are happy to lose the all-important income guarantees and take on the responsibility of investment returns and capital depletion but giving the freedoms mentioned above.

Playback Touring Exhibition 1 to 21 September Playback comes to The Hive in September, to showcase over 200 short films made by young artist filmmakers in one interactive exhibition. These remarkable and awardwinning short films made by emerging talent capture today’s world: from underground zine cultures, to urban communities and digital lives.

The exhibition features individual touchscreens that let you choose your own films; from drama, comedy, dance and spoken word. Some of the films were originally made and produced in the Midlands with Rural Media, where young people were given the support and funding to create a short film.

The exhibition is funded by Arts Council England and is a joint initiative with Channel 4 Random Acts.

WORCESTER MUSIC FESTIVAL Worcester Music Festival offers a weekend of free events across the city between the 15th and 17th September.

Dozens of gigs take place, with bands performing to help raise money for local good causes. There are also free music-related workshops for the whole community to enjoy. Last year more than £4,000 was donated to Acorns Children’s Hospice. This year the festival will help raise money for St Paul’s Hostel, which for the past 40 years has supported homeless people in the city. worcestermusicfestival.co.uk FEET

All About...

jigsaw JIGSAW, also known as The Worcestershire Mental Health Relative and Carer Support Group, exists to give support to those who look after others with mental illness. The group started at St Anne’s Orchard Day Hospital in Malvern over twenty years ago. When it closed eleven years ago, relatives and carers wanted to carry on meeting regularly. Since that time the group has continued to grow in strength and numbers.

Susan Nichols is secretary to the group and tells us more.

What does JIGSAW do?

The group members aim to improve the resilience, emotional strength and wellbeing for carers of people with mental illness in Worcestershire. We do this through peer support and by sharing our knowledge and understanding of mental health issues. It is important for relatives and carers to feel free to express their feelings in a safe and supportive environment without the fear of being judged. In addition to the group meetings we build partnerships with other charities and community groups who are involved with carers such as Worcestershire Association of Carers. More recently we have been successful in gaining funding and we have been able to run an eight week course in Mindfulness and a workshop on Borderline Personality Disorder.

What happens at meetings?

We hire a room in Malvern and we meet once a month in the evening, meaning that relatives and carers who work can still access valuable support and advice. The meetings are free of charge and so are the tea, coffee and biscuits. Most months we have guest speakers giving information on a variety of mental health related issues and about the support services available in the community for carers. There are also open meetings where we chat and discuss plans for the future.

Longstanding members provide friendship, mutual understanding and emotional support to new members who are often feeling desperate, helpless and isolated. These experienced members are able to signpost relatives and carers helping them to navigate their way through the ever changing mental health system in order to access the most appropriate services to meet their needs and those they care for.

Who do you help?

The group is open to anyone who is supporting an adult with a mental illness such as depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or personality disorder. People currently attend from all over the county. We are hoping that we may be able to set up additional groups in the north of the county.

Festival

worcester festival The Worcester Festival offers more than two weeks of family fun during August.

Starting on Saturday 12th August, there is music, exhibitions, trails and all kinds of activities culminating in a Fireworks Display on Monday 28th August. Many of the events are completely free and the whole festival is overseen by Percy the Peacock – look out for Percy on his travels around the city!

Here’s a selection of what’s going on: Opening Day – Saturday 12th August The festival is officially opened by the Mayor of Worcester at 10.55am outside the Guildhall, which is followed by music from the Shirley Pipe Band. It’s also a chance to meet Percy the Peacock! Throughout the day there will be lots more going on at the City Museum and Art Gallery which is hosting its Celebrity exhibition, there will be face-painting and circus skills for children around the city centre and St Richard’s Hospice is holding a duck race in the Severn on South Quay.

Sunday 13th August sees the return of the Annual Worcester Show to Gheluvelt Park, with crafting, baking, growing and artistic skills on show as well as music and entertainment between 10am and 5pm. There’s a Riverside Arts Market on South Quay from 11am and if you have time, pop into the cathedral to see exhibitions to learn more about medieval construction and our local geology.

Academy Theatre Arts Summer School is running from Monday 14th August until Friday 18th August. Taking place daily at Academy House on Infirmary Walk, there’s a chance for children aged 7 to 14 years to make new friends and enjoy a host of performing arts skills. The week costs £150 and pre-booking is essential (see contact details below) Stained Glass Demonstrations take place in the nave of Worcester Cathedral on Tuesday 15th August. It’s a chance to see conservators of stained glass demonstrating their craft from 10am. The demonstration takes place again later in the week.

Battle of Worcester City Walks take place during the festival. This is an hour-long tour recounting fascinating and remarkable tales from one of England’s most historic cities. Led by a Battle of Worcester Society guide, it’s a chance to learn about the last battle of the English Civil War, see key sites associated with the battle and learn things you never knew about the Faithful City. The tour finishes in the gardens at The Commandery where Worcester residents also gain free entry.

Worcester City Chess Club invites you to enjoy a game on Thursday 17th August from 8pm at The King Charles House on New Street. It’s a chance to play chess in the same room that King Charles’ courtiers would have used during the siege of Worcester. Please note the organisers point out this event takes place upstairs in a historic building which doesn’t have wheelchair access and isn’t suitable for children.

The St Richard’s Hospice Festival Fireworks take place at 10pm on the riverside in the centre of Worcester on Monday 28th August, bringing this year’s festival to a close.

enjoy the journey and other unhelpful advice...

A few weeks back, a sage piece of advice was delivered to me by my calendar.

In fairness, my calendar often offers words of wisdom, such as "October 12th - eat cake" or "August 27th - keep your pjs on all day", both of which are good ideas.

But this one was better. "Enjoy the Journey" it told me. And I thought "good point”...

Do you need to crank your favourite music up loud while you meal prep?

How do you JUST enjoy things more? Is it that easy to dial up the enjoyment on something, like the volume on a radio?

Do you need to get your friends involved in workouts? Suffering is more fun in pairs, for some reason!

When you’re cursing your workout because your legs are burning or your heart is beating out of your chest, do you think about this lovely bit of cleverness and find it cuts through the pain quite well, actually? Like:

Do you need to add a little nom-nom to your boring chicken salad?

“It really hurt but, thankfully, I remembered that I'm on a journey and I’m supposed to ENJOY it!

And the pain just…stopped!”

Hmm. Perhaps not!

In fairness, I can get my head around the fact that this piece of reframing - to enjoy the sucky feeling of out-of-breathness and muscle burn might well work for some.

But for most? NOPE. So the question I'd add, with the benefit of the wisdom I've acquired over the past few years, is this: What do you need to do to enjoy the journey?

You know, the part of the journey where it sucks, cos it does sometimes.

Here's the thing.

Whilst a behaviour might be beneficial for your health, if you don't enjoy it, you aren't going to do it.

Recipe

tomato & fresh basil salad If you try growing one thing this summer, have a go at growing herbs. Best of all, basil. Combined with tomato, this is summer on a plate!

At Roots we grow not one, not two, but three varieties! Beginning with a pinch of tiny seeds sprinkled on light compost, careful not to overwater, you will be rewarded within a few weeks with a tiny bush of basil plants that will grow happily in a warm corner of a vegetable patch or can be potted and then easily moved indoors as the autumn closes in.

Look out for these varieties. Sweet Genovese; traditional, large soft leaves full of flavour that melt into tomato sauce whether roasting or poaching the fruit. Purple Basil; and purple it is!

Good in flavour too and lovely torn over salad, a super contrast to bright nasturtium flowers that pep up a green salad in mid-summer. And our favourite, so called “Greek Basil”; has tiny leaves and is super pungent, fantastic flavour, ideal for pesto and tomato salads.

And of course, the easiest of all salads. Use a selection of tomatoes. Visit a good farm shop or

farmers' market from August to November and you’ll find cherry, plum, round, pear-shaped, yellow, orange and red tomatoes, mix them up!

To make your salad, chop and slice the selection of tomatoes in different ways, this adds to the interest. Scatter over basil leaves, tear larger ones, use small leaves whole. Drizzle with good extra virgin olive oil, a splash of balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper to taste. Leave for 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavours to merge.

Serve with crusty bread to mop up the juices.

mercia accident rescue service Mercia Accident Rescue Service is a charity offering immediate care to people who find themselves critically ill and injured. Working across Herefordshire and Worcestershire, its run by volunteers who are all experienced doctors or advanced nurse practitioners.

Robert Young from Worcester is extremely grateful for the existence of MARS. He was working in Redditch and was travelling home when he was involved in a horrendous car crash. Dr Malcolm Russell, an emergency medicine specialist from MARS was also on his way home when he received the call from the ambulance service to help. As the closest immediate care doctor, he arrived at the scene to find Robert with critical injuries including a punctured lung, broken pelvis and severe head injury. Following Dr Russell’s care, Robert was transferred to Birmingham, where he was placed in an induced coma for several weeks. He has now made a full recovery.

Founded in 1983, MARS volunteers come from a range of specialities such as emergency

medicine, general practice, cardiothoracic surgery and anaesthetics. As a member of this charity, they donate their spare time to saving the lives of others. The services provided by MARS support the local Air Ambulances and WMAS MERIT with ground-based response and critical interventions.

MARS receives no central or government funds and is entirely reliant on income from educational events and donations from members of the public or healthcare professionals. Donations are used to support the core activities of MARS in terms of the provision of pre-hospital emergency care to members of the public in both Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

Local Talent:

Martin Thorne and Company Martin Thorne’s been on the music scene a long time and yet he still constantly manages to come up with something new.

artin recently designed and built his own lap steel guitar. ‘Because it’s all metal, the sound has a clear, bell like quality’ he says, ‘but doesn’t sound like a tinny metal box.

There’s a lovely tone with a natural sustain.’ He’s been performing on it at summer festivals like Mappfest in Malvern in a set which he described as ‘grungy folk’.

Martin started creating music and lyrics fifty years ago. ‘I wrote tons of poetry as a teenager’ he says. ‘Then a friend gave me a battered old guitar which I strung left handed, I learned two chords and away I went!’

Today Martin still plays left handed which he says has had some influence on his musical creativity. His musical style and influence has been described as ‘abstract’ and a ‘bluesy but uncategorisable style ranging from the Mississippi delta to the Ganges’. ‘I have never learned something off by heart’ he says’ because it bores me. I have no patience for it and I always have to be searching for new ground.’

Martin loves to improvise and for the past six years he has performed with several other talented musicians under the title ‘Martin Thorne and Company’. They use all kinds of instruments including percussion, cello, flute, fiddle and sitar.

They take a song, strip away the chords and improvise away.

Their performances have gained a lot of respect from all kinds of people, but Martin is typically modest about their music. ‘There’s no big fan club’ he says, ‘because audiences constantly have to keep up with us!’

For the rest of the summer Martin Thorne and Company will be playing a number of smaller events locally. They are also due to play a live set in Victoria Park, Malvern, on Saturday 26th August as part of the ‘Alternative Bands in the Park’ series.

Direct from a highly celebrated extended season in London’s West End, Bill Kenwright’s production of Alan Ayckbourn’s farcical tale of matrimonial mishaps, How the Other Half Loves is coming to Malvern Theatres.

As Bob and Fiona clumsily try to cover up their affair, their spouses’ intervention only adds to the confusion. William and Mary Featherstone become stuck in the middle, falsely accused of adultery and with no idea as to how they’ve become involved. The plot culminates in two disastrous dinner parties on successive nights, shown at the same time, after which the futures of all three couples seem in jeopardy…

The star cast includes leading stage and TV actor ROBERT DAWS, best known for the hit series’ The Royal, Outside Edge and Roger Roger, opposite CAROLINE LANGRISHE (Lovejoy, Holby City, Judge John Deed).

CHARLIE BROOKS, much-loved for her portrayal of EastEnders’ Janine Butcher with LEON OCKENDEN, (Coronation Street). Completing the couples are MATTHEW COTTLE who reprises his critically acclaimed West End role alongside SARA CROWE whose West End credits include Ayckbourn’s Absurd Person Singular and The Constant Wife, but is perhaps best known for her role in the popular film Four Weddings and a Funeral.
