why and how should you invest?

By Independent Financial Adviser Gary Morris How do I know if I’m ready to invest?

It’s slightly unfair to answer a question with a question, but it’s easy to put off something you’re unfamiliar with. Only you can say when you’re ready – so, there are two things you should be asking yourself: 1) Do I have access to cash if I needed it quickly? And 2) Can I leave the money invested for a sufficient time to let it grow (at least 5 years)? If you answered ‘no’ to either of these questions, then investing your money might not be right for you. But if you answered ‘yes,’ then just remember that the earlier you start investing, the better chance you have of your savings growing.

Should I invest regularly or pay in a lump sum?

Saving money regularly not only helps with your own monthly budgeting, but it can also help smooth out the natural highs and lows of investing. Overall though, the longer you can invest in the stock market, the better it is likely to be for you. Timing your investment so that you buy when the market is low and sell when the market is high troubles even the very best of investment professionals! Investing regularly reduces the risk of buying high when investing a lump sum (expensive!). The technique of investing at regular intervals is known as ‘pound cost averaging.’

What if I need to get my hands on the money quickly?

Selecting the right type of savings vehicle is just as important as choosing where to invest – because not all savings vehicles allow you to access your savings at a time that’s convenient to you, or some might charge you if you need to access your savings earlier than expected.

Bear in mind that there are some cash accounts that will pay higher levels of interest provided the money is held for a minimum length of time, but accessing your cash early could swallow up that interest. Or, you might be denied access altogether until the term is up.

Savings vehicles like Stocks and Shares ISAs tend not to restrict access to your money, but the value of your investment may fluctuate, especially over a short period of time. So you need to be

clear about the money you can save over the medium-term so as to avoid being forced to sell when the value of your investments could be low. Spreading your investments so you’re holding assets over different periods of time can help with this – just remember that the less time you’re invested, the less time your money has to grow.

How long should I invest for?

Having a range of goals over the medium and long term will help you focus on how long to remain invested. However, investing in the stock market shouldn’t be viewed as a short-term investment – you need to be thinking at least five years. Plus, you should always keep some money readily available for the household to cover unforeseen events.

What are the tax advantages of investing?

Savings vehicles have their own tax rules, with the likes of ISAs having different rules and savings limits from pensions and bank accounts.

Holding different saving vehicles could help you control the level of taxes you pay today and perhaps more importantly, the level you pay later in life.

The Hallow Horticultural Society has several events taking place this spring.

Paul Green gives a talk “The Sensory Garden” and will bring along some flowers to sniff from his nursery! The talk is on Wednesday 18th April starting at 7pm at Hallow Parish Hall. 4. The Soldier's Tale by Stravinsky The English Symphony Orchestra is working with actors from Worcester Repertory Theatre for a performance of The Soldier’s Tale by Stravinsky.

This witty and poignant setting of the Faust legend is presented in a brilliant new staging, along with Copland’s Appalachian Spring, in which dancers of Academy Theatre Arts join the orchestra for a rare complete staging of this work. The performance takes place on Friday 4th May at The Swan Theatre.

5. art exhibitions 2018 sees the launch of a series of Art Exhibitions running throughout the year at Elmslie House in Malvern. The inaugural exhibition, ‘A Fresh Start’ is a Spring Show of Contemporary Art, open daily from 10.30am to 4.30pm on Saturday 7th April through to Sunday 15th April inclusive, with late night opening on Friday 13th April until 8pm.

WORCESTER CIVIC SOCIETY Worcester Civic Society has a busy calendar of events this Spring. On Tuesday 10th April they’ve organised a coach trip to Ludlow, with a guided tour by one of the town’s Blue Badge Guides. Meanwhile the Society’s annual Mayor’s Lecture takes place at The Guildhall on Tuesday 24th April, starting at 7.30pm.

OPEN GARDEN at 68 Windsor Avenue The garden at 68 Windsor Avenue in St Johns opens to the public this year on Sunday 27th and Monday 28th May. Roger and Barbara Parker take part in the National Open Garden Scheme each year and over eight years have raised more than £4,000 for charity.

The garden of their 1930s semi-detached house has flower beds, an oriental area, veg patch, bog gardens, a koi pond and three other ponds in very different styles. There are no less than five greenhouses as well chickens and ornamental pheasants. The garden opens between 1pm and 5pm each day, entry is £4.50 for adults, children free.

Refreshments will be served on both days with money raised going to charity.

There is limited space on surrounding roads so if you’re visiting by car, please park courteously.

the henry & james wills trust The Henry & James Willis Trust helps people in the Worcester area who are recovering from an illness, have been in hospital recently or have a long-term health problem. The Charity provides cash grants to assist with a short break away from home to help with recovery, which can be at a destination of your choice and to include a carer if required. The Trustees also consider other appropriate ways of offering assistance. he origins of the Trust date back to a successful manufacturing enterprise in the city in the Victorian era. Two brothers, Henry & James Willis, set up in Worcester as boot and shoe manufacturers. Shoes were made in every size, from the smallest child’s to the largest woman’s and in five different fittings and widths of soles. All were made from the finest qualities of leather obtainable.

Worcester was a good place to manufacture leather goods, thanks to the city’s longestablished reputation for glove manufacture.

In a short space of time, Willis of Worcester became a well-known firm throughout the UK. Their Cinderella boots and shoes were favoured for perfection of fit, elegance of style, comfort and durability which was unsurpassed.

Close attention was paid to every detail of the manufacturing process, with Henry Willis inventing a process now universally employed for dressing calf-kid.

After starting the business in Sidbury in the mid 1850s, it moved to the well-known Cinderella Works off the Bransford Road St John’s. Here it stayed for almost 100 years until finally closing in 1960. The building was sold to Great Universal Stores, the owners of the Kays catalogue and more recently it found a new lease of life as apartments, while retaining part of the original façade.

At its height the firm employed more than 300 people and enjoyed a reputation as a benevolent employer, paying the best wholesale wages in the country. In 1889, when the business had been in existence for some 35 years, the workforce entertained the heads of the firm to a dinner at the Albion Inn, Bath Road, rather a role reversal to the norm today.

In 1942 when Britain was in the depths of the Second World War, Miss Constance Sarah Finch, who had been nursing in Norwich and who is believed to be the grand-daughter of Henry Willis, created a number of Charitable Trusts in her will.

One of these was the Henry & James Willis Trust, with the aim of helping residents of the Worcester area with convalescence after surgery or illness.

The charity is now administered by a small group of voluntary trustees who review all applications received and can action grants very quickly.

worcester poets Worcester Poets is a group of poetry enthusiasts meeting regularly in the cathedral. A friendly group with a range of experience, new members are always welcome at their workshops. Paul Elwell tells us more. ur workshops act as a starting point for writing. We come together every three months and each workshop revolves around a theme which is chosen by one of our members.

Recently the theme was ‘The Museum of Your Life’, the idea of curating a museum with things that represent your past. Another time we chose ‘Hats’ as a theme, exploring how hats reflect your identity and their different associations. One of the group brought in an army cap from the last war which had belonged to their father. The memories that surfaced were very evocative.

Each session is led by one of our members who will decide on the theme of the day, but they might also provide examples of poems for us to read, or objects or photographs. Somebody ran a workshop on the subject of boxes; what you put in them both physically and metaphorically.

The Cathedral is kind enough to regard us as part of their larger Worcestershire family and, as such, they allow us to use it as our meeting space. Usually our workshops are held in the Chapter House, or sometimes in the Crypt. This year our meetings are in April, July and October, always on a Saturday.

We have around 30 people on our mailing list and there’s usually around 15 people at a meeting.

New members are always welcome.

The workshop is a creative space in which you can come up with ideas and start to write something. It’s really a starting point rather than a race to get something finished. Towards the end of each session we do read some of the work we produce, but there’s no pressure to do this if you prefer not to.

Some of the work produced in the workshops ends up on our blog (see the web address in the purple box). Our members have a huge range of experience, from newcomers to experienced authors who have been published.

Although we take the medium seriously, we’re not too pretentious about it. This is really about encouraging others to have a go at writing.

So, the bean scene is changing and for the better! British beans are back, no small feat as they had fallen out of favour with farmers conventionally growing cereal crops year after year and relying on artificial inputs to boost crop yields.

Beans had been relegated to animal feed status.

Those of us growing organically have led the return to crops which naturally build fertility in the soils; beans and peas are essential in our rotations. Simultaneously the nutritional value of beans in our diet has been highlighted and with some clever thinking, a new brand of British organic bean has emerged as a delicious alternative. Grown in Britain since the Iron Age, fava beans are tasty, nutritious and good for the soil. At Roots, we have stocked Hodmedod’s products for a while. Winning BBC Food and Farming Awards 2017 Best Food Producer, they have led the charge. A well-deserved prize for continuing to develop the British bean scene!

This recipe is the quick family supper version of a well-known Tuscan recipe which would normally involve soaking (overnight) and boiling the dried

beans first to cook them with garlic and sage, which is great if you are super organised (and really economical), but if not…

Heat the olive oil in a deep sauté pan (or shallow casserole dish). Prick the sausages and add to the pan, frying them over a medium heat, turning occasionally to brown on all sides. Then add the onion, continue to sauté for a few minutes to soften the onions then add the garlic and sage.

As soon as these ingredients begin to sizzle add the ‘squished’ tomatoes. Simmer for 15-20 minutes until the tomatoes have melted away in a sauce and finally add the rinsed beans. Check the seasoning is to your taste adding salt and pepper if necessary, you may need to add 125250ml of water at this stage to thin the sauce a little, then simmer for a further 10-15 minutes.

Serve this dish with crusty bread or some steamed greens, or both.

Ingredients 400g tin of Hodmedod’s Fava Beans 2 garlic cloves, sliced 1 medium onion finely chopped sprig of sage chopped olive oil 6 Roots Traditional Organic Sausages 400g tin of plum tomatoes with juice (squished with your hand)

early music festival Twelve hours of back to back baroque music in a ‘Baroquathon’ is one of the many highlights of this year’s Worcestershire Music Festival! During April and May there’s the chance to enjoy a range of different music in venues across Worcester. Here’s some of the highlights.

Bach and Biber – Friday 27th April Violinist Rachel Podger performs two of Bach’s solo Cello Suites which have been transposed for violin.

There will also be music from Tartini and Matteis as well as Biber’s hauntingly beautiful Guardian Angel, the final work from his Mystery Sonatas. 7.30pm at Old St Martin’s Church in The Cornmarket.

A History of Dance in Music – Sat 28th April Early wind band Blondel take us on a fascinating musical journey which includes music from Margaret of Austria’s dance book and Playford’s Dancing Master. 7.30pm, Old St Martin’s Church in The Cornmarket.

Linarol Consort with Matthew Pochin will explore the rich and diverse repertoire of German song.

worcester repair cafe Since it started two years ago, hundreds of items have been repaired by the volunteers at Worcester Repair Café.

Meeting on the second Saturday of each month, everybody is welcome to bring something along to have it fixed. Rod Howell is one of the organisers and tells us more.

Who organises Repair Café in Worcester?

Repair Cafe Worcester is part of an international network of Repair Cafes; the home organisation is based in Amsterdam. The Worcester group was started up as a partnership project between Transition Worcester and the Duckworth Worcestershire Trust early in 2016. The Repair Cafe Worcester steering committee consists mostly of volunteers and staff from those organisations.

When did it start in Worcester and what have been the highlights since then?

The first Repair Cafe in Worcester was in May 2016; since that time, we have saved almost 500 items from a landfill site.

Milestone moments include an official visit by the Mayor of Worcester in November 2016; in this session we mended several items of his, including two pairs of his trousers. Our busiest Repair Cafe to date was in November 2017 when we had 70 items to repair. In a very busy session like this, there may be a short wait, but it gives our visitors an opportunity to sample our delicious homemade cakes!

What kinds of things can you repair?

We’ll have a look at literally anything that can be carried through the door. Our sewing team can mend clothes and textiles; we’ll fix electrical items, computers, toys, furniture and bric-abrac. We also sharpen garden tools, such as secateurs, shears and loppers.

Everyone is welcome to come along; we have visitors of all ages and all backgrounds. Families come along too, very often including a child clutching a favourite toy (or toys) to be mended.

Are there any memorable repairs you can tell us about?

We did set the world straight once! Two of our regular visitors brought their globe in through the door. Unfortunately, the globe would not stay with North facing upwards. Fortunately, we managed to fix it, so that North faced up as it should. Many of the best repairs are for young people with broken toys. We’ll never forget how happy one girl was when we sewed the eye back onto her stuffed toy giraffe.

Tell us something about your volunteer repairers…

The whole of Repair Cafe Worcester feels like a community of wonderful, like-minded people.

They are people who are happy to give their time and share their skills with each other as well as our visitors. Of course, each repair session relies not just on our talented repairers, but also on the people who greet visitors at reception, serve refreshments and match each visitor to a repairer.

the final curtain Could this be the final curtain for the world’s greatest detective?

Sherlock Holmes lives in retirement on the South Coast. He keeps bees, occasionally casts his fly fishing rod, even plays his Stradivarius when the rheumatism allows.

All too aware that he’s older and slower, he’s concerned that he might have lost his touch, paranoid that he is an easy target for his enemies: there have been so many over the years. He never truly believed Moriarty – his arch nemesis – died at the Reichenbach Falls.

So when Mary Watson tracks him down to tell him she has seen her long-dead son, James, through the window of 221B Baker Street, apparently alive and well, Holmes is determined to solve the mystery and confront his own demons at the same time.

Chilling, gripping and filled with unforeseen twists and revelations, this new thriller stars Robert Powell and Liza Goddard at Malvern Theatres from Monday 21st to Saturday 26th May.
