Welcome to the September issue of ‘All About Malvern’.

Sept 2010 Published and edited by: Sascha McDonald All About Local Magazines Ltd 07906 573352 Photo Front Page: Painting by local artist Tia Lambert (see page 8) Graphic Design & Layout: All About Magazines Editorial: Sascha - 07906 573352 Advertising: Tina Palmer - 07952 591031 Distribution: All About Malvern is distributed to 7,000 homes and businesses in Malvern Booking Deadline: For October - 10 September

I enjoy a walk along the hills as much as the next woman, but I must admit the idea of walking along the ridge - along the entire length - and in the dark - is something altogether different! But later this month, that is exactly what scores of women are going to do. The walk, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, is a challenge, but a fun one, and with teams of willing volunteers everybody taking part should have a very enjoyable night. Tina Palmer, who works for this magazine, is one of a group of Barnards Green Traders who will be taking part, and I’d like to take this opportunity to wish her luck (she’ll need it!). If you’re interested in taking part, there’s more details in our extensive what’s on listings towards the back of the magazine. If outdoor activity isn’t your thing, then take a look at the Autumn in Malvern festival, which brings art, music and literature together in events spread throughout the town.

Let’s hope for an Indian Summer! Sascha McDonald, Publisher & Editor Specials in this Magazine for August: • Free dessert, Red Lion p3 • Free Estimates, Eco Living p15 • Free Trial, Kumon p25 • Offer on carpet cleaning, Chemdry p28

All About... ...local artist Tia Lambert

Tia Lambert studied Fine Art and completed a post-graduate course at the Royal Academy Schools before becoming a professional artist. Her new exhibition ‘Sunny with a Chance of Snow’ features watercolours of the hills and begins in Malvern later this month.

Tell us about your latest paintings

I’ve been painting on the hills since last October, and completed 40 scenes in all kinds of weather. There are sunny scenes but also snowy ones which I’ve never painted before, so for the first time I had to use a different palette of colours. I usually paint outside, on the spot, but at times this winter it was too cold and so I took a photo and painted at home.

What’s your favourite view of the hills?

I never take the hills for granted and I never tire of looking at them all the time. They’re like an island rising out of the landscape, its unusual to have a ridge with a drop on either side, and on the top there’s a sense of space with rolling countryside all around. Its very uplifting and you feel better once you’re up there, I like to get that feeling in my pictures. Earlier this year the snow was good because it transformed something familiar into something else. One morning I walked up the Beacon and it was extremely windy, it just makes you feel the force of nature. No-one else was up there, it was very special.

H ow do you create a picture? I only started painting landscapes around five years

ago, after years of concentrating on still life using oils. Someone suggested I try to paint the hills, I hardly dared to start, but in retrospect I’ve really enjoyed it. For these

pictures I’ve used ink and watercolour. Usually a small painting takes between 3 and 5 hours to complete, a larger one (A1 size) around 15 hours, not counting the time it takes me to find a spot on the hills to sit! My largest picture is approximately four feet wide by two feet high (140cm x 56cm), painted in situ on the hills in three sittings. It was during the recent warm spell of weather, the paint was drying so quickly I was having to pour water from a cup onto the paper to keep it damp.

Are there still views you want to paint?

I see different aspects of the hills all the time and I’m constantly searching for new views. Whenever I go out I’m looking for new places, a footpath sign makes me think ‘there might be a good view up there’. Right now there’s a field of sunflowers on a nearby farm with the hills standing in the distance which I’m planning to paint. I’ve been focussing on flowers at different times, this year it’s been bluebells and the strong pink of Rose-Bay Willow Herb. I like a strong subject in the foreground framed against the hills. There’s always something new to paint, the same fields change through the seasons and one subject can look good in so many different ways. In late summer the grass on the hills turns a honey colour and looks beautiful when its rippling in the wind.

Tia’s Exhibition begins on 18th September at Iapatus on Belle Vue Terrace, from Monday to Saturday between 10am and 5.30pm. All the work is for sale except one which is being offered as a prize in a raffle to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Tia will be painting at the gallery on the first day of the exhibition. Heat Pumps Explained By Steve Knowles of Ecoliving, Worcester There is a lot of excitement around renewable energy and heat pumps in particular, especially given the introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive next April, but how do they work? A heat pump uses solar heat energy stored in the ground, water or air. This is renewable and totally free which is harnessed, collected and delivered to the heat pump. A heat pump works in very much the same way as your refrigerator, but in reverse! In other words just as a fridge gets cool on the inside and warm at the back, so the heat pump heats your hot water and central heating system and cools the liquid (or air) going through it which is then pumped (or blown) away to be re-heated by the environment. Not to get too technical, heat energy, either in the form of a liquid from pipe-work in the ground or directly from the air is brought into the heat pump where it comes into contact with a refrigerant, which evaporates at a very low temperature thus drawing heat out of its surroundings (that’s why a licked finger feels cool). The refrigerant gas is then pressurised in

the heat pump and as the pressure goes up so does the temperature. The now very hot refrigerant gas passes into the heat exchanger, where the heat is transferred to your heating system to provide heating and hot water. Simple? It really is! Heat pumps have been widely and effectively used in the much harsher climate of Sweden since the 1970s showing their value. Heat pumps provide one of the cleanest and most energy efficient ways of heating your home as most of the energy they produce comes from a free source. Typically heat pumps deliver between 3 and 4 times as much heat energy as electrical energy put in. They can be used with both under floor heating or traditional radiator systems. The electricity used can be offset with electrical energy generated onsite via solar PV panels for example.

Free advice on how to reduce your energy bills using heat pumps, solar PV and other micro-renewable solutions is available from Ecoliving on 01905 359936 or 07870 266642.

Eating for Increased Vitality Sometimes, the foods that we eat can affect the chemicals that are present in our brain. These chemicals can, in turn, have an effect on the way we think, feel and behave says our resident health expert Allison Maxwell from Colwall. The Glycaemic Index (GI) is a numerical system that tells you how fast a particular food causes a rise in your blood sugar levels. A food with a high GI will produce a sudden rush in blood sugar, while a food with a low GI will keep your blood sugar levels more stable. This is not a ‘fad way of eating or diet’ it is a scientific fact! However, it is important to stress that people with diabetes or other medical conditions should consult their GP before following any GI eating regime. Eating low GI foods will leave you feeling fuller for longer, and will help you to avoid snacking in between meals. Foods that have a low GI include apples, oranges, pears, porridge, beans, peas, pulses, lentils, bran cereals and peanuts. However, as well as eating low GI foods, sometimes it is necessary to eat high GI foods. For example, after exercising your muscles need to restore their sugar levels quickly, as most of their energy will have been used up. This is when eating a food with a higher GI value, such as a banana, can be beneficial.

A Healthy Balanced Diet As well as considering low and high GI values in your diet, it is also important to ensure that your diet is balanced and contains foods from all five of the main food groups. These are carbohydrates, proteins, fruit and vegetables, fats and sugars and dairy products. Carbohydrates include starchy foods, such as bread, rice,

potatoes, and pasta. Sources of protein include fish, meat, eggs, nuts and beans. Dairy products, such as cheese, milk and yoghurt are good sources of calcium and are important for strong bones and teeth. Fruit and vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals, which are essential nutrients that your body needs in order to work properly. You should eat at least five portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables a day. Fats and sugars contain more energy than any other food group and should make up the smallest part of your diet. Fats are divided into two groups - saturated and unsaturated. Eating a small amount of unsaturated fat will help to keep your immune system healthy and can reduce cholesterol levels. Foods that are high in sugar, such as chocolate, cakes, biscuits and fizzy drinks, give your body an instant energy rush when you eat them. However after the initial rush your sugar levels will drop. As your sugar levels drop, so will your energy levels. As a result, you may find it more difficult to concentrate, or you may feel irritable, tired, and lethargic. As sugary foods are bad for your teeth and high in calories, you should eat them sparingly, as a special treat! Allison Maxwell has an MSc in Public Health Nutrition, a BSc in Nutrition & Food Science and 20 years experience in the field of food and nutrition. If you need advice ring 07771694490 for Private Nutritional Consultations.

Holistic Therapy

Interview with Emma Mary Gathergood, Holistic Therapist So what is Holistic Therapy? Holistic Therapy works to integrate and restore balance to mind, body, spirit and emotions. It accepts the latest research indicating the close relationship with all four parts, and how problems in one area are linked to less obvious issues in all other areas. It includes techniques from a wide range of disciplines including Life Coaching, Gestalt Therapy, Body-Mind Awareness, Mindfulness, Psychosynthesis, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), NLP and Solution Focused Therapy. If you are feeling down, you often identify with the unhealthy part of yourself, mistakenly thinking that is who you are. Holistic Therapy can help you to access the strong and healthy parts of yourself. It then teaches new coping strategies, thinking habits, ideas and most importantly a new awareness of who you REALLY are. What do you mean by who you REALLY are? As human beings we have many different aspects to ourselves. We each have a “Mask self”, the face we like to present to the world, where we try to appear in a positive light. Then we have our “Shadow self”, the

face we hide from the world, full of all our worst traits. Many people think that is all they are. However, looked at holistically, we all have an inner face of our “True Self”, our innermost core, who we REALLY are. The more we can get to know this aspect of our self, and choose to express this in the world, the more chance we have of creating what we REALLY want in our life. So what do you mean by creating what we want? How do we do that? Our thoughts, feelings, dreams, ambitions and fears all create an energy field around ourselves. This acts as a magnet, drawing situations to us as like attracts like. So if we spend a lot of time worrying or being negative or critical, we are more likely to draw the very thing we don’t want to us. Sometimes, even when we are thinking positively, we are being influenced by our underlying core beliefs, and past negative experiences. By working to understand and then release some of these beliefs and experiences, we can more consciously start to draw to ourselves situations we REALLY want.
