2. elgar pilgrimage The English Symphony Orchestra returns to Malvern Theatres for the first time in nine years as part of its October ‘Elgar Pilgrimage’.

The programme includes The Elgar Overture ‘Froissart’, Elgar’s Violin Concerto (Opus 61) and Brahms Symphony No 3 in F major. The orchestra is conducted by Kenneth Woods and is joined by the violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky.

Well, here we are again. Another year has whizzed by at break-neck speed and we are already starting to hunker down for the autumn nights and beginning to turn our thoughts to Christmas gift buying.

he speedy passing of time (it must be my age!) has made me think about how ‘time poor’ we appear to be these days.

4front theatre A husband and wife have set up their own theatre company and are bringing a new production to the Coach House Theatre in Malvern this autumn.

at Holman and her husband Rob stayed in Malvern after studying Performing Arts and Theology at Regents Theological College in West Malvern.

Last year they took the bold step of starting 4Front Theatre, and this autumn is a milestone in their journey as they bring ‘Nothing to Hyde’, a newly created play to the stage.

Some say that we are always at war with ourselves, struggling to fight and suppress the darker side of our human nature; the internal struggle of good versus evil, light versus dark. But what if you found a way to let the darkness out?

‘We’ve taken the original story of Dr Jekyll and Mister Hyde and given it our own spin’ says Rob. ‘Our story is in a contemporary setting and we’ve made Mr Hyde less of a brute than the original.

This time he’s smooth, sophisticated, charming and witty. Actually people will watch and maybe prefer him to Dr Jekyll. The point we’re making is that evil doesn’t always take an obvious form.’

Until now 4Front Theatre’s productions have toured churches and schools, taking Christian messages as their theme, but the aim of this play is to bring their work to wider audiences.

‘First and foremost, this is a good story’ says Rob. ‘The story of Jekyll and Hyde is such an interesting story and we’ve updated and re-told it, looking at good and evil in a thought provoking way.’

4Front Theatre is one of many small, up and coming production companies in the area which is using the Coach House Theatre. Following a recent refurbishment, the venue next to Malvern Theatres on Grange Road has become a popular venue for drama and live music.

‘There’s a lot going on locally’ says Rob ‘and hopefully we’ll attract an audience who might have heard of Jekyll and Hyde but not be familiar with this gripping story.’

MALVERN FESTIVAL OF INNOVATION

MALVERN CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL The Malvern Christmas Festival and Lights Switch-On takes place this year on Saturday 28th November.

As always there will be lots to see and do throughout the centre of Great Malvern, including the Christmas market from 10.30am with art in the grounds of the Priory and on food on Abbey Road, while inside the Priory will be refreshments, bell ringing and other activities.

At the library on Graham Road there are Victorian fairground rides outside whilst inside will be childrens’ arts and crafts activities, face painting and a Christmas grotto.

There’s music and entertainment on Belle Vue Island, with a parade along Church Street from 5.30pm before the main lights switch on event.

MALVERN TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB There’s plenty of live football at Malvern Town Football Club this autumn. The club competes in the Premier Division of the West Midlands Regional League and home games are at the HDanywhere Community Stadium on Langland Avenue, Pickersleigh.

The Malvern Festival of Innovation (6th to 11th October) see speakers from the world of science and technology, exhibitions and a family science show on Saturday 10th October.

malvern art group According to Derek Fontaine, painting and drawing is a hobby you can enjoy throughout life. ‘At The Malvern Terrace Artists two of our oldest members are over 90. It’s astonishing what beautiful work is turned out by older people!’

Later this autumn some of our local artists from the Malvern Art Group are coming together to paint for the day and you are invited to go along and watch them.

Each of them will bring their oils, pastels or pencils, set up an easel and get to work, while visitors can chat with them and find out more about their work.

It’s a way to promote the hobby but also very enjoyable according to Derek, who is helping to organise the event. ‘Between eight and ten of us will be exhibiting’ he says. ‘This is our second exhibition and the first was such a success that we’ve decided to repeat it.’

Topic of the month: The Problem Hip The first recorded attempt at hip replacement occurred in Germany in 1891 using ivory to replace bone. However the first clinically successful replacements were performed in the 1950s and 60s

by Professor John Charnley in Manchester. Technology has come on enormously since then and now 160,000 replacements are done every year in England and Wales with success rates running at around 96%.

Osteoarthritis

This is a very common problem usually affecting older people. In my experience some cases are long term (chronic) in which the hip will gradually stiffen up but then grumbles on for years with only minimal deterioration and often manifests as episodes of pain.

Others come on more acutely and deteriorate rapidly with a downhill path that leads to the surgeon’s door within months. As an Osteopath it often surprises people that I am very much in favour of hip replacement surgery. I think there is a strong case to have the

Greater trochanteric pain syndrome

Of course many pains around the hip area are not caused by osteoarthritis and do not require surgery. I see huge numbers of cases of greater trochanteric pain syndrome which used to be called trochanteric bursitis. Most of the pain is in the buttock and down the outer side of the thigh (osteoarthritis of the hip is commonly felt in the groin and front of the thigh). Currently this is thought to relate to a dysfunction of the tendon of one of the buttock muscles.

Acetabular labrum tear

Since the advent of MRI scanning this has become a much more common diagnosis. The condition is caused by a tear in the lining of the socket of the hip and shows up as a “catching hip”. Specialist MRI is used for diagnosis and surgical repair usually fixes the problem.

By Satya Robyn This morning I sat down at the blank page and thought about what this article would be about. What am I interested in at the moment? What do I want to write about?

struggled for half an hour, and then realised that I was asking myself the wrong questions. The right questions were – what is it that you want to read about?

What can I do for you?

The concept of ‘doing service’ is very important in 12-Step groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous.

Newcomers are told that, if they want to keep what they’ve received from the programme, they need to start giving it away. By passing on their experience and doing the essential tasks that need doing such as making tea or organising the money for the group, they discover how rewarding it is to offer something to others, how much they learn, and how they are graced with further sobriety.

This isn’t a popular concept in wider society. The media often encourages us to think about what we need for ourselves. What do we want to buy or eat, where do we want to go, and who do we want to be? These questions can preoccupy us and we start believing that if only we find the perfect jacket or book the perfect holiday then we’ll be happy.

In my experience, true happiness usually visits me when I’m busy doing something that isn’t about me. Here at the temple one of my favourite events are our volunteer days, when people come together to work in the garden or decorate a room.

A preoccupation with ourselves often originates from fear. We worry about how much we need and where we’re going to get it from, because we don’t trust that the Universe will provide us with enough. We might spend lots of time focussing

on how we look because we fear that people will judge us or reject us if we don’t look just right, or we keep our flat obsessively clean because we feel anxious when things are out of place. It’s helpful to investigate these fears and be kind to the parts of ourselves that feel greedy, needy or controlling.

It can also be helpful when we’re feeling tangled up in ourselves to do one small thing for someone else (or for the environment). Write a friend a postcard, clean your windows, or do a small patch of weeding (in your own garden or someone else’s). Maybe you could spend ten minutes listening properly to your neighbour when they start complaining about their health again, or give away the spare apples from your apple tree. This can help us take our focus away from ourselves for a moment and connect back into the big wide world.

Go gently. This is about making yourself available when you are available, and not about punishing yourself or feeling guilty about not doing enough.

Experiment with asking yourself ‘what little thing could I do for others’, and see what happens next. Enjoy being of service.

Pumpkin Risotto

Serves 2

A lovely warming risotto making using of brightly coloured pumpkin or squash.

Cooked with local cider.

Ingredients

Ready in 30 min

1. Add the bouillon powder to the boiling water to make a stock, and then place on a low heat.

2. Heat the oil in a large pan. Sauté the onion, garlic and pumpkin/squash and cook until it starts to brown.

3. Add the rice and stir until coated in oil then add the cider and saffron cook for 5 minutes.

Add a ladleful of stock and stir. Add the spinach.

4. Cook on a medium heat, stirring frequently, adding more stock as required.

5. When the rice is cooked, remove the pan from the heat, season and top with roasted pumpkin seeds to serve.

the dulcimer world congress Musicians from across the world are coming to Malvern at the end of October to take part in the 13th Dulcimer World Congress, the first time it has ever been in the UK. he daily public concert programme offers a rare chance to hear performances by world-class players of this unique instrument.

‘We’re very lucky to be welcoming top class musicians from such diverse cultures as Iran, Japan, China, Hungary, Switzerland, Australia and USA’ says Sally Whytehead who has organised the event.

One of the highlights will be a live performance of a new soundtrack to a silent film dating from 1926. Adapted from The Tales of Arabian Nights, The Adventures of Prince Achmed tells the tale of the love between a poor tailor and a princess.

Written by musician Geoff Smith, the performance features dulcimer, tongue drums and voice and will appeal to ages 7+ to adult.

Age UK, Malvern & District would like your help if you are a ‘handy person’ & could spare a couple of hours on a Friday morning, preferably on a weekly or fortnightly basis The group needs a volunteer who will receive training and visit homes to carry out tasks such as putting up a hand rail or key box.

The volunteer will travel in their own car (or van) but travel expenses will be available.

It is hoped that the volunteer could carry out two tasks a week or so.
