Greater Malvern

Wine Society The Greater Malvern Wine Society exists to to experience the enjoyment & to educate an understanding of wine. Approaching the subject in an affordable, relaxed and unpretentious way. Jim Murphy looks after Membership and Marketing for the Society.

So what does the Society get up to?

We taste wines, usually 8 at our monthly tastings, white and red and occasionally a dessert wine make up the evening. The Society started in August 2013 and today there are 35 paid up members. Our membership ranges from our President, a Master of Wine, to keen-to-learn newcomers, so we have the full range of knowledge.

What activities has the Society been up to over the summer?

We toured Sicily, visiting a different winery every day for 8 days for tastings and lunch. We held our summer lunch at Lake House off Peachfield Road with a presentation of The Pol Roger range from the MD Nick James. Our President and Master of Wine Mark Savage, was on hand to answer detailed questions. We visited the Laithwaites operation in Gloucester for a tasting and tour. These events were, of course, in addition to our regular monthly tastings.

And what do you have planned for the remainder of the year/into 2015?

In November we will have our Master of Wine present his selection of Austrian and German wines for tasting. Plus our Christmas dinner, a four course meal with matched wines. The wines for the evening are a considerable member benefit as they are both expensive and free!

Next year’s lunch is in the Lovells Vineyard at Welland and we have an initiative called Master Class. This will be a quarterly learning exercise on particular non-obvious aspects of wine, starting with the science of taste and covering such things as controversial marketing tricks, Cap vs Cork and so on. We also plan a brochure detailing all our offerings.

What do members particularly enjoy about the Society?

The very varied programme and trips out, along with our regular meeting atmosphere. There is a lot of learning and laughter whilst tasting some top order wines. We don’t take ourselves seriously and enjoy a chuckle.

The ease of access, since we are in the centre of Great Malvern, is also important with members arriving on foot, bus and train – the station is minutes away. For drivers we have spittoons. We appeal to singles and couples alike.

Malvern Festival of Innovation As we go to print, The Malvern Festival of Innovation returns for its third successive year, with an extended programme from Wednesday 1st October to Saturday 4th October at Malvern Theatres. The Festival’s founder, Dr Adrian Burden, tells us about some of the big names in the world of science and technology who have been invited to speak.

The first day of this year’s festival focuses on Advanced Engineering & Manufacturing; a critical area of the UK’s economy that many think is dying and moved to China. This is certainly not the case, although this industrial activity has necessarily moved up the value chain to focus on high-end knowledge intensive activity such as advanced design, the integration of complex systems, improved supply chain efficiencies, and innovative production methods such as 3D Printing. We are joined by Professor John Perkins CBE, the Chief Scientific Advisor at the UK Government’s Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and Dr David Bott, the recent Head of Innovation Programmes at the UK’s Technology Strategy Board. Local companies succeeding in this sector will also exhibit; Malvern Instruments, Morgan Motor Company, and Mazak for example.

Cyber Security is also a key emerging industry for Malvern and surrounding counties. We have hotspots of activity at the Wyche Innovation Centre, at the Enigma Business Park, and at the Malvern Hills Science Park which in turn hosts the new National Cyber Skills Centre. We are focussing on this exciting sector, including insights from Lockheed Martin who have been involved in developing security and defence technologies in the international arena for many years and who few realise have a base in Malvern. There will be topical talks about the role of cyber security in aircraft and medical devices, and some background to the complexities of the latest buzzword: Big Data.

Malvern has a vibrant startup and business community, including social enterprises, and so we’re exploring what it takes to start, grow and succeed in a new business. Lee Strafford, the founder of household name Plusnet, joins us to explain how he helped grow the company from a startup to a £67m pound exit! Later in the day the entertaining elevator pitch session will be back by popular demand; come to hear what the latest wave of entrepreneurs are setting out to achieve.

Exhibitors include the Malvern Small Business Forum, Intellectual Property Office, Centre for Entrepreneurs, and StartUp Britain.

On Saturday Mark Champkins, the Inventor in Residence at the Science Museum in London and past winner on BBC’s Dragons’ Den, will talk about creativity and invention. He is followed

by Quentin Cooper, as heard on BBC Radio’s Material World, who explores the mindset and reputation of great scientists, technologists and engineers who have changed the world.

Helping both men and women deal with the trauma of a relationship that has irretrievably broken down.

By Malvern Branch Co-ordinator: Gill Owen I got involved with Divorce Recovery Workshop (DRW) 3 years ago when a friend who had been on the course found it so inspirational she wanted to set up a local branch in Malvern, which is the only branch in Worcestershire.

The workshops are run by experienced volunteers who have all been through the breakdown of a long term relationship and attended the workshops. Although my own divorce was a long time ago, I had to attend the workshops before becoming a facilitator.

I was amazed to discover just how many emotions I had buried. Once I had completed the workshop I knew I had come to terms with my past and could let it go. When you go through a breakup you don’t always realise how much grief, resentment and anger you hold on to or how emotionally and physically exhausting it can be.

How can Divorce Recovery Workshop help?

The breakdown of a long term relationship is a form of bereavement; yet unlike the death of a partner, you are often expected to carry on as normal. Whilst friends and family can be supportive, they don’t always understand how you feel and even your best friend will eventually have had enough of you going over and over what has happened!

Anyone who has been through the heartache of an irretrievable breakup is welcome at DRW, even if you are going through the

divorce or if it was years ago. DRW will help you cope with the many different emotions: shock, disbelief, rejection, anger, bitterness and guilt. You will gain a better understanding of what you are going through and be offered strategies to help you cope.

What actually happens at a workshop?

The course consists of six sessions covering: • Is this really happening to me?

• Coping with your 'Ex' • Assuming new responsibilities • Letting go and forgiveness • Family matters • Thinking about new relationships Participants watch a DVD on each topic and then divide into small groups with 2 facilitators per group. Everything said in the group is strictly confidential and no one is pressured to talk if they don’t want to.

When is the next one taking place?

In November on 3 Saturdays the 1st, 15th and 29th, with 2 workshops per day.

Is there a charge for the Workshop and where does it take place?

DRW is a non-profit making registered charity but to cover our running costs we ask participants to pay £60 for the entire course.

The venue is in Churchdown Road, Malvern and there is a free car park.

By Satya Robyn This morning I had to write a difficult email to a friend. I confessed that although I’d promised to do something for them, I wasn’t going to be able to do it. I’d only agreed to do it at the time because I wanted them to like me. They felt disappointed that I’d gone back on my word, and more let down than if I’d said no in the first place.

On occasions like this I can feel, like Burroughs, as if I am made entirely of flaws – and I’m not sure how good my intentions are either. It doesn’t feel very nice. I would much prefer to be perfect!

I don’t think I’m alone in preferring to be perfect.

We are surrounded by stories and images in the media about how we ought to be – young, beautiful, successful, popular. We get caught up in roles and identities, and put ourselves under pressure to present ourselves as ‘someone who copes’ or ‘someone who doesn’t get upset’.

There are a few disadvantages to this approach.

One is that we are continually setting ourselves up to fail. We set unrealistic expectations for ourselves, and then feel disappointed when we can’t live up to them. We start from a position of ‘ought’ (‘I ought to enjoy calling in to see my fatherin-law’) rather than reality (‘my father-in-law is a difficult person sometimes and I’m too tired this week to see him without getting grumpy’).

Another is that, by keeping our flaws to ourselves, we can give a false impression to others and so they don’t realise when we might need their help. ‘Not being very good at asking for help’ is one of my flaws, and it means that not only am I missing out on getting help but I’m also taking away the opportunity for those around me to offer help. If they have the time and energy, people are often glad to help – I know I am.

Acknowledging and fully admitting to our flaws reminds us of how it is to belong to the human race, which helps us feel more compassionate towards the people we love (and don’t love!). If we struggle so much with our own shortcomings (which don’t even always make logical sense to us) then we can understand how hard it might be for others. They won’t have the same

shortcomings as us (they’ll have different compulsive behaviours, different fears) but they will be of the same variety – human.

In my experience, when we are more open about what we’re struggling with, people usually understand and respond with caring. This experience of being accepted ‘just as we are’ can be truly transformative. Paradoxically, the safety and comfort we experience in these moments can allow us to soften our defences, face our fears and become more loving and less flawed.

Of course it isn’t always appropriate to share our flaws with everyone, all of the time. If we are looking after someone who’s ill or vulnerable, they might need us to put our needs aside for the time being and be ‘the strong one’. We might also know people who are generally intolerant of other people’s shortcomings (possibly because they also struggle to tolerate their own). These aren’t the best people to start practising being more honest with!

Experiment with being more open this month.

Choose one person every week and show them a teensy bit more of your flaws than you would usually. Don’t expect anything in return, and see what happens...

The person I wrote the email to was disappointed, but they also said that they appreciated my honesty and that they could understand my dilemma. It felt like they were saying to me that it was okay to be human. The good news: it’s okay for you to be human too.

Topic of the month: Sciatica Leg pain, numbness, tingling and weakness pocket which squashes the nerve.

Sciatica is a hugely common problem.

It often starts as low back pain which then radiates through the buttock, back of the thigh and into the calf.

The foot may become numb or tingle.

Severe cases can lead to foot drop due to weakness in the muscles of the leg. Famous sufferers are as diverse as footballer Thierry Henry and playwright William Shakespeare.

Diagnosis

In many cases a clinical diagnosis is all that is necessary i.e. no special tests are required. The tell tale signs are the history, a reduction of ability to lift the leg up straight and maybe a loss of muscle power or ankle reflex.

Plain X-rays are relatively unhelpful but the MRI scan will often reveal the cause of the pressure on the nerve roots.

Causes

The vast majority of cases are mechanical in origin. In other words there is no disease process as such, but the nerve roots have become compressed by the surrounding tissues. Commonly a prolapsed (“slipped”) disc will do this, although the facet joints can also produce a similar effect if inflamed and spinal instability (spondylolisthesis) is another cause. Occasionally the same sort of symptoms can be caused by a muscle in the buttock (piriformis) tightening around the sciatic nerve itself - the so called “piriformis syndrome”. Men sometimes get sciatica if they habitually drive cars with firm seats with a thick wallet in their back

Treatment

As ever it is best to start with simple treatments first.

Hands on massage, manipulation and acupuncture will be helpful in many cases. Where possible, mobility should be maintained and as pain subsides core stability exercises should be encouraged to reduce the risk of recurrence. Cases that don’t respond to this may go for spinal injection (nerve root block or epidural) and a very small percentage may require surgery to remove the offending disc or stabilize the spine.

Christmas Trends

It is always interesting to reflect on what the Christmas decorating trends for 2014 tell us about the year as a whole. For many customers it has still been a pretty tough year financially, especially the beginning when all the dreadful weather and flooding made everyone reflect on what is most important in life, count their blessings, cherish their local communities and be grateful for their friends and families.

As the year has progressed there have been quite a few economic green shoots, although the family budget is still tight at the end of the month.

I have noticed that people have increasingly felt more able and happy to choose a special present and treat for those they care about and for themselves, especially if it has been a particularly tough week. There is nothing like a new handbag or scarf, I have noticed, to cheer a girl up!

I think the Christmas trends this year also reflect the idea that ‘a little of what you fancy does you good’. Christmas decorations have a more opulent, fanciful feel that are all about glitter and glow. Fairytale silver and white is a strong theme often with natural shapes such as naturalistic birds, animals and trees. These natural motifs can be seen everywhere on cards, gifts, jewellery and home-ware. Last year we saw a trend for wise owl decorations, this year look out for stylish foxes and happy hedgehogs!

‘Illustration’ is another hot look this year. Hand drawn, textured and embellished cards, wrapping paper, stationery and gift bags really show off the art of the traditional illustrator but often with a humorous, quirky twist. Card makers have reflected people’s need for a closeness to nature and their admiration for traditional processes such as wood and lino cuts.

Present buying-wise, people are also looking for something that is different and special for the ones they love. They want the gift receiver to know they have chosen something personally for them. It is not about the price of the present it is the fact that it was individually chosen.

Hand-made artisan products where each piece is unique and very tactile will always be well received. A range such as ‘Emma’s Soaps’ fits this bill, in that they are organic, hand-made and perfectly wrapped. Hand sewn decorations that celebrate the resurgence of people’s love of sewing and crafting are also popular this season and have the added advantage of being shatterproof!

Male gift buying is always one of the biggest challenges for the gift retailer, the trick I have found is to try and find things that are useful but are presented in a different and imaginative way, for example we have some cufflinks that are made from vintage watch parts. Smart gift books on interesting ‘male’ subjects are also a big hit for all ages.

Quality of design and value for money are still very important. If people are going to spend their hard earned cash they want something to be well designed that will last. Key brands that people know and trust will always have a place such as ‘Jellycat’ soft toys and ‘LSA’ stylish glassware as people trust them to provide innovative high quality products that will be loved and treasured.

So here’s to creating an individual, original and fun Christmas to share and celebrate what’s really important; our family, our friends and our community.

Welland Juniors FC Welland Junior Football Club is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Every year, hundreds of young people enjoy playing at the club thanks to its fifty qualified coaches and many volunteers who make it all possible. The Chairman Peter Manion tells us more.

Back in 1989 I came up with the idea of starting a Saturday morning Football Club for the children in Welland and approached Gordon Algeo. I still remember our first October morning when we waited to see if anyone would turn up! In the end we had 22 children and our Football Club was born.

At first we were called Welland Primary Football Club and all our players were from the school.

The popularity grew and so did the numbers.

Many more people stepped in to help which in turn allowed our membership to grow to 80 children during the first year.

At first we only played friendly matches as well as local tournaments, but after three years we took the plunge and entered a side into the Mercian League Under 12s. The following season the team moved up to the Under 13s and a new Under 12s team was formed. Soon we had five sides playing from Under 12s to Under 16s as well as a team in the Stourport League Under 17s. We re-named the club as ‘Welland Juniors’ and became affiliated to the Football Association.

The age range of the Club naturally expanded right through from 5 to 18, with the number of pitches, coaches and helpers increasing proportionately.

Today we have a membership of over 300 children, making a significant contribution to sport in the county. We have fifty active Level 1 and Level 2 coaches with a network of young Junior Leaders coming through the ranks.

Girls football has also been successfully introduced. After the guidance of former professional footballer Paddy Mullen, Jodie Williams is now at the helm and Welland now works as a WFA Girls Hub Club with active Under 11, Under 13 & Under 15 squads.

There have been many highlights. In 2008 we were presented with the County Winner Club Award and achieved the level of FA Charter Standard Club, before going on to reach the highest level possible, of FA Community and Charter Standard Club, a year later. Our pitch

at Spitalfield opened in 2005 and five years later our new pavilion opened with support from Worcestershire Council, The Football Foundation as well as the Parish Council, Welland PreSchool and many different fundraisers.

The Club continues to develop with the formation of a Men’s Team in 2011 which provides continued progression for our Under 17 and Under 18 players who reach the end of their youth football. This team has already progressed from Division 5 to Division 3 in the Cheltenham Association Football League. Two years ago Welland Ladies were formed and they now compete in the Hereford & Worcester Girls and Women’s County Football League.

With so much going on, we are always looking for new members to join our committee. This usually involves one meeting a month as well as offering assistance in running some events and fundraising. If you can help then please get in touch.

English Symphony Orchestra The English Symphony Orchestra, based in Malvern, regularly performs across the West Midlands and further afield. They have a busy autumn schedule which includes playing in Birmingham and London before returning for a concert in Malvern in November. The Chief Executive Peter Sheeran tells how he became involved with the orchestra and about their repertoire.

ESO was founded by William Boughton in Worcester in 1978. Over time, it expanded into the English Symphony Orchestra and moved to Malvern, based at The Forum Theatre which had been built partly as a result of that expansion.

The orchestra is conducted by Kenneth Woods, an American conductor who married a British violinist (Suzanne) and moved with her to Cardiff where they started a family. Some of our players had played with him and suggested we give him a go. We organised a series of concerts at Christ Church in Malvern for Ken to conduct and halfway through them realised that we had found our man; he was appointed in summer 2013. Since then Ken has become a fully-fledged part of the overall organisation – for instance, performing in our Friends concerts – and has shown a genius for discovering great music that is outside the standard repertoire.

Our programming is decided by the musicians themselves and sometimes a theme emerges.

Our September concert in Malvern was entitled ‘Slavic Strings’ and sometimes we will give an interesting idea a try – there are many examples of original, nay unique, programming over recent years. We can be flexible because ESO performs under many guises. For example, apart from

Although living in Worcester since 1992, I had been managing merger programmes in London for a decade when I decided to take a year out and donate my time to a cause that I truly believed in. As secretary of a 350-strong choir in the City, I had seen for myself the power of live music to inspire both performer and audience and wanted to encourage greater participation in live music. I was introduced to the ESO, who were struggling financially at the time, by Humphrey Burton in 2006 and have not been back to the City since.

String and Symphony Orchestra ESO now also stands for the English Salon Orchestra…we also perform in smaller groups of wind, brass and string players. The two groups most widely associated with ESO remain the String and Symphony Orchestras, however, and most of our concerts reflect that.

Another of our aims is to bring live music to everyone, regardless of personal circumstance.

We run concert programmes for everyone from toddlers to people in care homes and hospices.

We organise orchestra courses for children and also support county youth music organisations in their activities. We also work with adults: we helped establish The Film Orchestra in Worcester last year and ESO musicians run its training bands, which consist of both adults and children.

We run the Worcestershire County Music Library in collusion with the Elgar School of Music, with whom we have a very close association.

The ESO has a busy autumn schedule, with concerts in Birmingham, Worcester and London before returning to Christ Church in Malvern for a concert of works by Haydn and Mozart on Friday November 14th. For more information visit www.eso.co.uk or call the ESO Box Office on (01386) 791044.

Roasted Carrot Soup Serves 4 Ready in 45 minutes

Ingredients

1 white onion, sliced 1 garlic clove 250g carrots, cut into chunks 1 small potato, peeled and chopped 1tsp coriander seed, crushed 1 tsp bouillon powder 400ml water 3-4 tbsp extra virgin rapeseed oil salt and pepper to taste

1. Preheat the oven to 200° / Gas Mark 6.

2. Place the onion, garlic, potato pieces and carrots in a roasting tin.

Sprinkle with coriander seed and salt and pepper. Drizzle with extra virgin rapeseed oil.

3. Place in oven and roast for 30 minutes.

4. Place the roasted vegetables in a jug with 250ml of the water. Blend until smooth.

5. Place blended mixture in a saucepan and add bouillon powder and the rest of the water and bring to the boil. Simmer for five minutes.

A lovely way to eat carrots!

The vegetables are roasted to bring out sweetness.

The penny-pinching Argan is healthy, wealthy and completely obsessed by a list of imaginary ailments, and can no longer control his chaotic household or the mercenary medics he employs.
