Dozens of volunteers are busy preparing for MappFest (in June) and West Fest (in July). These events raise thousands for local good causes, well done (in advance!) to everybody involved.

Malvern Cube is hosting gigs with some amazing artists, while there are choral performances in the area from local and visiting choirs. There’s also an afternoon performance at Elmslie House, by younger musicians who are raising money for the eye unit at Worcestershire Royal Hospital. Then there is Science in the Park and a host of other events and activities on our Noticeboard and What’s On pages. You won’t be short of inspiration for things to do this Summer!

Enjoy Local 1. Performance of Lucy Ward Lucy Ward is performer and songwriter whose unique delivery and breath-taking voice have enchanted audiences the world over. An acoustic performer, Lucy has been a BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards winner and finalist on several occasions. She’s visiting Malvern with a performance at The Cube on Sunday 24th June. Doors open at 7pm, a cash bar will be running and a support act will also be on stage.

2. concert Malvern Festival Chorus is joined by Cheltenham Regency Sinfonia and singers from London-based 1885 Singers for a concert this June.

Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, along with his Tragische Ouverture and Mendelssohn’s Hear My Prayer will be performed at Malvern Theatres, starting at 7.30pm on Saturday 23rd June.

3. birmingham bach choir Birmingham Bach Choir comes to Great Malvern Priory in June with Espressivo!, a programme of sacred and secular choral music from Italy.

The evening promises a range of Italian choral music by composers better known for other works, as well as enjoyable surprises by some lesser known figures.

The concert is at 7.30pm on Saturday 16th June and advance tickets are available via birmingham.bachchoir.com

things to enjoy local During June & July 4. hanley swan open gardens Six gardens in Hanley Swan will open under the National Garden Scheme this June.

It includes a new one, Yew Tree Cottage, a 17th Century property set in a traditional cottage and vegetable garden.

At 19 and 20 Winnington Gardens there will be a small display of bird and wildlife photos taken within number 19 including pictures of a badger. Plant stalls and Cream Teas will be available.

The gardens will be open on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th June between 1pm and 5pm.

Combined entry is £6, children enter for free.

5. Art of the fifties The Art of the Fifties is a new exhibition coming to Malvern this May and June. Bringing together fabrics, paintings, prints and posters it includes work by John Bratby, Fernand Leger, John Piper and many other artists.

The exhibition takes place at Elmslie House, a restored, award-winning Grade 2 listed family home on Avenue Road in the centre of Great Malvern.

Entry to the exhibition is free and its open daily from 10.30am until 4.30pm from Saturday 26th May until Sunday 3rd June. There’s also a late opening on Friday 1st June until 8pm and some prints and posters will be available to buy.

community NEWS WEST FEST West Fest, the popular community festival in West Malvern, takes place this year on Saturday 7th July.

There’s a packed schedule of bands providing the music, plus all the usual attractions including arts and crafts, children’s activities, food stalls and the beer tent.

The day raises money for local good causes – last year £7,000 was raised. West Fest runs from Midday until 10.30apm on West Malvern Playing Fields.

FUNDRAISING VOLUNTEER NEEDED Malvern Welcomes supports the resettlement of refugees in the Malvern Hills area and provides practical assistance and advice.

They’re embarking on a new project with the Home Office and need a Fundraising Volunteer to attend local events, approach local organisations and explore crowdfunding and other options. Volunteers need to be IT literate, have access to a computer and preferably have some fundraising experience.

Hours are flexible. They should be happy to work from home, as well as being able to attend evening Malvern Welcomes meetings (one or two a month).

News MALVERN HILLS TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE Malvern Hills Tools For Self Reliance began life just a year ago with the aim of collecting unwanted tools. After sorting and refurbishing, these are sent to projects in Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Ghana and Zambia.

So far, seven crates of refurbished tools as well as larger items of equipment, plus 14 sewing machines have been sent. The group also relies on fundraising and at the seventh Annual Seed Swap in Great Malvern on 14th April, over £500 was raised for the charity.

This will be used to buy seven new welding kits which will be sent to projects in Malawi.

Science in the park The popular Malvern Science in the Park event returns to Malvern on Saturday 30th June 2018. This open-air celebration of science and technology in Priory Park offers something for all the family. Adrian Burden who is one of the organisers, tells us more.

This year we have hands-on activities and exhibits from some of the UK’s leading science organisations including the Institute of Physics, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and the Institution of Engineering & Technology.

rock around the hills It’s 1977 and a band called The Stranglers have just recorded their second album No More Heroes. They’re undertaking a mammoth tour of the UK and in the autumn they arrive in Malvern to play at the Winter Gardens. Were you there?

Today part of the Malvern Theatres complex, the Winter Gardens hosted many of the up and coming bands of the 1960s and 1970s. Names that have now passed into legend played there, including Pink Floyd, T-Rex, Black Sabbath, The Undertones and The Jam, to name a few.

Now, a project has begun to create an oral history project of those times, together with an exhibition and an online community archive. Funded by The Heritage Lottery Fund, The Bransford Trust and The Postcode Community Trust, Rock Around The Hills will gather posters, tickets, photographs, reviews and recordings. It will also gather the stories of the people that were at those gigs, from the roadies and band members themselves to the promoters, the technical staff and of course the gig goers.

‘We are so excited about receiving this funding’ says Clare Gilliam who is a Trustee of Rock Around the Hills, the charity behind this project.

‘There is a wealth of memories about this important aspect of the community’s heritage, just waiting to be tapped.’

It will encourage community cohesiveness, a sense of belonging, a pride in Malvern’s musical heritage and the discovery of shared life experiences among people from different generations and social backgrounds.’

The exhibition will take place in Malvern Library and The Hive in Worcester in June and July 2019.

It’s hoped the project will encourage and support local people to conserve this aspect of local history which could so easily be forgotten.

The Painful Calf There are many causes of calf pain.

Here are some of them.

Muscle/tendon injury

This is the commonest cause of calf pain usually resulting from sport or overexertion. If the muscle is torn it may lead to inflammation and bruising. The Achilles tendon can also become injured causing pain nearer the heel. Complete Achilles rupture may need surgical repair.

Pain due to nerve irritation

Sciatica frequently causes calf pain. The problem originates from irritated nerve roots in the lumbar spine often secondary to a disc injury. The pain runs down the back of the thigh into the calf or foot. In such cases treatment applied to the spine and surrounding area is most likely to relieve the calf pain.

DVT

Deep vein thrombosis is blood clot formation which often affects the calf area. Usually easy to spot, the calf becomes swollen, hard and hot with a purplish colour. DVT is extremely serious and requires immediate medical attention to prevent potentially fatal consequences.

Arterial insufficiency

When an artery is blocked there may be pain in the calf but this will often only show up when the patient walks.

Unlike the DVT, the leg will go pale and cold on exertion.

There may also be loss of pulses and pins and needles.

In cases where this is suspected further investigation is always required.

Cramp

Most people have experienced the agonising uncontrolled muscle contraction of cramp. Often the cause is unknown but dehydration or even holding a given position for too long can trigger it. Occasionally nerve damage or restricted blood supply may be contributory factors.

Popliteal cyst

Formally known as a Baker’s cyst, this shows up as a soft swelling in the back of the knee which may extend down into the calf particularly if the cyst bursts or leaks.

It is due to the knee producing too much fluid, for example, in arthritis or cartilage tear.

Ready in 30 minutes

Savoury Summer Tarts Perfect for picnics or served with a salad for a tasty lunch.

1. Heat oven to 200°C/Gas 6.

2. Place the tofu in a bowl, mash with a fork.

Add a pinch of turmeric and a pinch of bouillon powder. Season with salt and pepper.

Ingredients 200g Shortcrust pastry 1 packet silken tofu pinch of turmeric pinch of Marigold bouillon powder salt and pepper to taste 1 red onion sliced handful of fresh thyme

3. Heat a little oil in a pan and add the onion, cook for a few minutes until caramelised. Add the thyme leaves.

4. Roll out the pastry and cut 12 circles, place in a tart tin.

5. Add a spoonful of filling to each pastry circle and top with the onions and thyme.

6. Bake in the hot oven for 15 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden.

Music

summer concert A summer afternoon concert at Elmslie House in Malvern this June will be raising money for the eye unit at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

The concert is organised by Louise Vale, a professional violinist who has played with (among many others) the BBC Philharmonic and Hallé Orchestras. She will be joined by the pianist, Tim Sidford, to open the concert with a performance of the Allegro Vivo from Debussy’s Violin and Piano Sonata, marking the centenary of Debussy’s untimely death in 1918.

Local students aged between 8 and 18 years, many of whom are taught by Louise, will also be performing music from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th Century, exploring a variety of styles from Folk, Rag and Tango to Classical.

‘The concert also represents a valuable performance opportunity’ says Louise, ‘especially for those students currently preparing for their summer music exams and we have a wonderful

the peace of wild things When I sit on the hills and look out at the stunning views good states of mind arise naturally.

When I go out into the deep countryside and look up at the night sky I am awestruck.

To see the arm of the Milky Way stretching through the sky, fine points of light and a soft fog as the many stars blend into one another, is to be reminded of how vast, powerful and wonderful the universe is. Sometimes I get the same sense when I am walking on the hills, when the view appears through a gap in a wooded trail, or when a wildflower greets me from the side of the path.

I am moved to gratitude as I see the natural world continually offering itself to me. The natural beauty of the landscape is mostly the end process of millions of years of geology, biology and evolution. Personally I had very little – if anything – to do with bringing it into being, and yet here it is!

Sometimes I moved to heartbreak too, when I see how little we offer in return, how so often we take the gifts of the natural world for granted, and how our greed damages the global eco-system.

This heartbreak feels like a healthy reaction – I am standing witness to how things are, and I am motivated to examine my own relationship to the natural world. Can I use fewer resources? Can I make my own garden wildlife friendly? Can I support the work of those who are engaged in taking care of the world?

There are people deeply engaged in good work, and I am moved to gratitude when I encounter them, or remember them.

Gratitude can also lead me to action, planting more wildflower seeds in the garden, signing up to support the RSPB or local Wildlife Trust, and taking others into the natural world to inspire them as well.

At the end of June I am co-leading a mindfulness walking weekend in the Malvern Hills. We’re being funded by the Area of Natural Beauty Malvern Hills Sustainable development fund.

How many of us make time to get outside? How often do we leave our insulated houses, and cars and, “come into the peace of wild things”? (As Wendell Berry called it in his wonderful poem) Take this article as an invitation to find your own peace ofMagic wild things; to go out into spaces where of Christmas Concert nature thrives; to make time to stop and connect with something other than the merry-go-round of modern life.

Every morning I make a pilgrimage around the temple garden: I pay attention to the cow slips (have you seen how many there are on the roadsides this year?); I notice the tadpoles in the pond, and the water boatmen; I try to see if the ferns are any less tightly curled than yesterday; I hear the constant chattering of robins competing for territory.

Go into your own garden. Or get a map of the hills from the tourist information centre and find a new path. Go on your own or take your family and friends. Connect with the natural world, let it move you to better states of mind, and move you to taking care of the world.

Events

midsummer malvern Malvern Civic Week Friday 22nd to Saturday 30th June This is a special year for Malvern Civic Society, which celebrates the 60th anniversary of its formation in 1958.

The Opening Ceremony on Saturday 23rd June starts at 10am with music and dancing from the Appleyard Morris Dancers on Belle Vue Island, followed by the official opening by the Mayor of Malvern, with the Town Crier in attendance. The prize-giving of the Schools’ Literary Competition then takes place in the Malvern Theatres Foyer at 11am and all are welcome to come along to these events.

‘A History of Malvern in 60 Objects’ is an exhibition throughout the week in Great Malvern Priory. On Thursday 28th June, Andrew Huntley gives a short lecture in The Priory about the choosing of those objects (12.30pm for 1pm, bring your own lunch) This is a free event with a retiring collection to support the work of the Friends of Malvern Priory.

Heritage will be prominent with events including a visit to Wilton Castle in Ross on Wye, a tour of Great Malvern’s Victorian cemetery, recollections of local people and buildings by long-time member of the Society, Roger Hall-Jones, while Dr John Harcup will talk about the many reasons why Malvern became famous over the centuries.

Cricket features prominently during the week.

Anthony Collis gives a talk on the Foster family, whose fame led to Worcestershire cricket being nicknamed Fostershire (7.30pm, Monday 25th June). A women’s match is also planned at Barnards Green Cricket Club on Friday 29th June from 6.30pm. This will be a chance to spectate while enjoying a drink and a barbeque.

The week concludes on Saturday 30th June with a youth concert by Severn Arts, the lead organization of the Worcestershire Music Education Hub (6.30pm in St Edmund’s Hall, Malvern College).

Feature

mappfest 2018 Mappfest is a free weekend of music on Malvern Link Common on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th June. A family-friendly event, it’s free for anyone to come down and enjoy music from local bands. The event raises thousands of pounds for local charities. Julie-Anne Goode, one of the people behind Mappfest, tells us more.

acoustic tent will be overseen by local legend Sean Jeffrey. We are also excited to announce that we once again have the wonderful Malvern Rocks Stage who have supported us so well since the beginning and are a fantastic addition to the festival.

This is the ninth year of Mappfest and every year we’re overwhelmed by the amount of support we receive.

We are always looking for volunteers to come along and be part of the event with us. If you are interested, find us on Facebook or on our website and fill in the application form.

This year there will be four stages, children’s rides, a bouncy castle and face painting, licensed bars, ice cream and food. What’s even better, entry is free! We are pleased to say that the Battle of Britain Flight are once again supporting the event and this year their Dakota aircraft is due to perform a flypast for us.

Selecting the bands and artists for the festival is always difficult. Led by our Secretary Lisa Nash we have worked our way through over 750 applications from all over the country and as far away as America, Jamaica and Australia!

We draw up a shortlist then publish a festival programme which can be found on our website.

One of the more exciting things to happen this year is we have created a Mappfest single.

Committee members, volunteers and musicians young and old came in to The Session Music Studio in Worcester for a day of recording. It was an amazing day, the studio donated their facilities and every person that attended on a cold wet Saturday in January did so out of kindness, giving up their time to help us.

An event like Mappfest is only possible thanks to the support of so many people, volunteers and local companies. This year the main stages and power for the festival will be provided by RMPA who did such a fantastic job last year whilst the

Although June is the highlight of the year, we raise funds through the year. In February we raised £230 from collection buckets on a dash around local pubs. We’ve had acoustic evenings and sponsored walks, all of which raises vital funds for local charities.

Last year, we raised £5,600 for St. Richard’s Hospice, Headway and Community Action Malvern. This year we are including another charity. Charlotte & Craig Saving Hearts Foundation raises money to provide defibrillators in public places.

Mappfest takes place on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th June from Noon until 10pm on Saturday and Noon until 8pm on Sunday.

There will be three stages and plenty of other entertainment on the festival site on Malvern Link Common.
