Enjoy Local 1. MALVERN OUTDOOR CINEMA SEASON The Malvern Outdoor Cinema Season continues on Sunday 5th June with an outdoor showing of Casablanca. The film, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman will be shown in Rosebank Gardens, starting at 7.30pm. Audiences can bring their own blankets, chair and picnics, refreshments will also be available.

things to enjoy local 2. ARMED FORCES DAY Armed Forces Day is celebrated in Victoria Park on Saturday 25th June. One of the highlights will be air displays, including a planned flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Ex-servicemen and cadets will take part in a parade and there will be lots of activities for all the family.

The event runs from Midday until 6pm

Meeting fortnightly on Friday between 7pm and 9pm, the venue is wheelchair accessible and everybody is welcome. There’s music and refreshments, entry is 60 pence.

The Book Fair at Christ Church on Avenue Road is a weekly event, offering the chance to browse a large selection of second-hand books. There are bargains as well as a large folio collection and first editions, CDs, DVDs plus cards and gifts. There’s also tea and coffee available, making this a relaxing way to spend a Saturday morning.

The Fair runs from 10am - Midday

5. WEST FEST West Fest this year takes place on Saturday 2nd July from Midday until 10pm. Situated on West Malvern Playing Field, there will be three stages hosting music acts as well as craft stalls and food and drink to enjoy. There are activities for children as well. The event is organised by a group of volunteers and a lot of the resources used are donated.

West Fest has donated thousands of pounds to local charities and good causes. Last year’s event helped fourteen local groups with a major donation to a defibrillator which is located on the wall of the West Malvern Social Club. Entry to the event costs £10 for adults, £6 for under 18s and under 5s are free. A family ticket is £20.

LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are needed to help out in the new Cats Protection charity shop in Barnards Green. The shop opened at the end of April and already has a team running it, but more are needed to help with a variety of tasks. The shop helps to raise funds for the charity. Whether you can spare just a little time or a lot, the shop’s manager Emma would love to hear from you. She will aim to fit your days and hours around your commitments.

ROYAL AIR FORCES ASSOCIATION The Royal Air Forces Association is a charity providing welfare support to RAF families that need help. They are hoping to to recruit a Fundraising Team Leader to set up and manage a small team of community fundraisers in the Malvern area. Training will be provided. This is a great volunteer role in which to gain experience in events and managing people and training will be provided.

The volunteer will need to feel comfortable in social environments, be approachable, cheerful and friendly, enthusiastic, be able to motivate and lead others, be highly organised and a strong communicator.

MALVERN IN BLOOM COMPETITION The ‘Imaginary Garden on a Plate’ competition is looking for entries from primary school children in Malvern. Organised by the traders in Barnards Green, they would like children to design their miniature creations on a paper plate. Entries will be displayed in shop windows around Barnards Green before judging by the Mayor on Friday 24th June.

There are two age categories, 4 to 7 years and 8 to 11 years, and a winner from each category will receive a £25 prize, with £50 donated to their school.

Entries should be delivered to Just So in Barnards Green on 22nd and 23rd June.

GREATER MALVERN SHOW ENTRIES Entries are sought for six categories, covering Vegetables, Flowers, Fruit, Produce, Beverages and Photography. Although still several weeks away, you are encouraged to enter now and start your preparations early!

Organised by Monksfield Allotment Association, the event takes place on Saturday 10th September in the Lyttelton Rooms and the grounds of Great Malvern Priory. There will be stalls to browse, children’s activities, morris dancing, a raffle and refreshments. Money raised goes towards the work of Link Nurseries Horticultural Therapy Centre.

ighty years ago, a large crowd gathered in Priory Park to watch the celebrated playwright George Bernard Shaw plant a mulberry tree. A picture from that moment shows him wielding a shovel, throwing the first spadefuls of soil onto the tree’s roots.

A Walk with Kilvert - Eight readings from Kilvert’s Diary by Robert Payne

The tree survived until 2000 when it was blown down in a storm. Fortunately, a cutting of the original tree was sent to Malvern in Victoria, Australia, and now a sapling grown from this cutting is returning to Priory Park. The planting ceremony takes place on Saturday 25th June at Noon in Priory Park and launches a week of events for Civic Week 2016. We only have space here for a few highlights, there’s more information on the Civic Society website, www.malverncivicsociety.org.uk

Kathleen ‘Kick’ Kennedy – A talk by author Paula Byrne ‘Kick’ Kennedy was an American socialite and daughter of Joseph P. Kennedy. Saving Country Houses - An Illustrated talk by Ben Cowell Britain’s historic environment is recognised as unique. Recipe

OUr lizzy’s falafels

Makes 12 Ready in 1 hour

Ingredients • 250g soaked chick peas • 1 large onion, chopped • 1 clove garlic • 1 tbsp tahini (optional) • 1 tsp crushed coriander seeds • 1 tsp cumin seeds • pinch chilli flakes • salt and pepper • fresh herbs large handful

A taste of summer holidays to come!

Soak the chick peas in a large pan of water for at least 12 hours before using. There is no need to then boil the chick peas - the falafels are cooked in the oven.

1. Place all the ingredients in a food processor mix until combined.

2. Chill for at least 30 minutes.

3. Heat oven to gas mark 6/200˚C. 4. Take spoonfuls of the falafel mixture and roll into balls.

5. Place on a lined baking tray and cook in a hot oven for 15 minutes.

Delicious served with pitta bread and salad.

Topic of the month: Ligament injury Serious ligament injury can be a major disability, with surgical reconstruction sometimes being required.

Sports people will often say that they would prefer to break a bone than damage a ligament. So what are ligaments and why do they cause so much trouble?

What are ligaments?

Ligaments are classed as connective tissues. They connect adjacent bones by crossing the line of the joint to create stability in the joint. Most connective tissues are made of a mixture of two proteins: collagen and elastin. In order to provide stability ligaments should not be elastic, so are made almost entirely of collagen which does not stretch much at all. Therefore in an injury, if the ligament is overstretched it either snaps or fails to return to its original length as its elastic limit has been exceeded.

Additionally ligaments heal incredibly slowly partly because they have a very poor blood supply and therefore not many nutrients reach them.

Severe cases may not heal at all and this is when surgery may be required.

This clinic is privately run by David Jones DO. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.

Which ligaments are commonly injured?

Every joint in the body has ligaments stabilising it and therefore can theoretically be damaged. However some joints are more prone to injury than others. Twisting an ankle will easily damage ligaments here and the knee is also vulnerable especially in contact sports like rugby.

Thumbs can be bent back in skiing injuries especially on dry slopes where they catch in the brushes. Hip ligaments however would usually require much more force to damage them as they are so strong and the hip is such a stable joint in the first place.

What can be done?

The treatment required varies depending on the severity of the injury. If the ligament is not fully ruptured then initial treatment is directed at controlling pain and reducing inflammation. Rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE) is commonly prescribed. Mobilisation should be commenced as soon as possible. Passive mobilisation has been shown to produce the best results (either using machines or by hand). If severe joint instability is noted further investigation is required, sometimes followed by surgical opinion.

madresfield bells Monday is bell ringing practice evening in Madresfield and on the evening we visit, eight ringers are busy in a corner of the church. Judging from the chat and laughter, this is an enjoyable and popular pastime.

ell ringing has its own terminology. A group of ringers is known as a Band and the person in charge is the Tower Captain. At Madresfield the tower captain is Geoff Titmuss, who learnt as a teenager and returned to ringing after the bells here were rehung nine years ago.

‘A bearing on the Tenor bell failed, causing it to fall to one side’ explains Geoff. ‘A lot of money was raised which allowed two new bells to be cast and new fittings produced before the bells were returned to the tower.’

Today there are eight ringers from novices to those who have a wealth of experience. ‘We don’t ring anything too complicated’ says Geoff, ‘and if you’d like to come along, we’ll give you a full induction.’

I do hope people who need that support will make the first step and come along to one of our mornings.’

As well as the weekly meetings, regular social outings are organised and there are fundraising events throughout the year as well. change

By Kaspa Thompson Suzuki Roshi was once asked if anything was constant in this life. He replied with one word: change.

a

couple of weeks ago I watched a wave of hail moving from behind the hills, over the temple and through the valley. Directly above my office, directly above my writing desk, is the dining room balcony. Drum-rolls of hard ice falling onto the flat surface of the balcony roused me from my concentration. I went upstairs to watch the weather.

A few days earlier it had felt like summer had arrived. The sunshine was bright, and the air was warm. It was a real change from the sun and cold wind of winter and spring days. The sun-rose in the garden started to flower. Each delicate, Barbie-pink, flower lasts for just one day.

On my day off, I was looking forward to a day in the heat. I sat in the garden eating breakfast, looking out over the copper-beech, with its orange-yellow blossom, and the plum tree just coming into leaf. Grey clouds drifted in, settling over the sky like a soft blanket. Still, I spent most of the day outside.

In the evening it started to rain. Noisy rain. The cats ran inside, mewing at us, complaining about the weather. I could hear the water from the roof flooding down the downspout and overwhelming the drains. It rained hard through the night. The following morning it eased a little. The rain drops were smaller and softer. More like mist than rain.

The slate tiles of the coach house roof I can see from my office window were dark with the wet.

It’s tempting to complain about the rain, and praise the sunshine. But they are each beautiful in their own way. Someone was decorating our shrine room on those wet mornings. It wasn’t ideal conditions, the light was dim, and the paint took longer to dry, but the garden loved the rain.

The potato plants doubled in size in a couple of days, and the cucumber seedling I planted out on my day off grew taller by an inch a day.

The summer colours were dulled a little by the

mist, but still the deep pink magnolia flowers burst from the grey.

If we can just find the right place to stand, all weather is beautiful weather. And all weather changes. The same is true of our own lives.

There are large changes that a life goes through, and we might have some sense of what they are: of how the energy of a life shifts from childhood, through the teenage years to adulthood and old age. Having some sense of this can bring us a kind of solace, we can make peace with knowing that one thing changes into another. But we shouldn’t hold on too tightly to this idea of cycles.

Just like the weather there can be unexpected storms in the summer, or days of sunshine in the winter.

Thoughts, feelings, our physical health, all of these change over the years, and all of these change on a daily basis, and all of these change from moment to moment.

The simple act of knowing this can bring us to a calm centre point.

We can’t control many, if any, of these circumstances. But, like the weather, we can change how we look at them, and how we experience them.

In every circumstance there is something beautiful, and every circumstance is always beginning to change into something new.

Helping both men and women deal with the trauma of a relationship that has irretrievably broken down.

By Malvern Branch Co-ordinator: Gill Owen I got involved with Divorce Recovery Workshop (DRW) 4 years ago when a friend who had been on the course found it so inspirational she wanted to set up a local branch in Malvern, which is the only branch in Worcestershire.

The workshops are run by experienced volunteers who have all been through the breakdown of a long term relationship and attended the workshops. Although my own divorce was a long time ago, I had to attend the workshops before becoming a facilitator.

I was amazed to discover just how many emotions I had buried. Once I had completed the workshop I knew I had come to terms with my past and could let it go. When you go through a breakup you don’t always realise how much grief, resentment and anger you hold on to or how emotionally and physically exhausting it can be.

How can Divorce Recovery Workshop help?

The breakdown of a long term relationship is a form of bereavement; yet unlike the death of a partner, you are often expected to carry on as normal. Whilst friends and family can be supportive, they don’t always understand how you feel and even your best friend will eventually have had enough of you going over and over what has happened!

Anyone who has been through the heartache of an irretrievable breakup is welcome at DRW, even if you are going through the divorce or if it was years ago. DRW will help

you cope with the many different emotions: shock, disbelief, rejection, anger, bitterness and guilt. You will gain a better understanding of what you are going through and be offered strategies to help you cope.

What actually happens at a workshop?

The course consists of six sessions covering: • Is this really happening to me?

• Coping with your 'Ex' • Assuming new responsibilities • Letting go and forgiveness • Family matters • Thinking about new relationships Participants watch a DVD on each topic and then divide into small groups with 2 facilitators per group. Everything said in the group is strictly confidential and no one is pressured to talk if they don’t want to.

When is the next one taking place?

The next DRW course will run on 3 Saturdays, fortnightly, on 9th and 23rd July and 6th August 2016: 2 sessions per day with lunch in between.

Is there a charge for the Workshop and where does it take place?

DRW is a non-profit making registered charity but to cover our running costs we ask participants to pay £60 for the entire course.

The venue is in Churchdown Road, Malvern and there is a free car park.

Coinciding with the official 90th birthday of HM Queen Elizabeth II, Malvern Festival Chorus will also be commemorating the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. In a quintessentially English programme, the words of The Bard evoke the so-called “Merrie England” of the first Elizabethan period. These are interpreted in the lyrical musical arrangements of, among others, Vaughan Williams. The concert also includes madrigals from both Elizabethan eras, sung by Malvern Festival Chorus and Bromsgrove School Chamber Choir. James McKelvey is the soloist in Finzi’s Shakespearean song cycle Let us Garlands Bring. In addition to the music there will be recitations from the Bard’s plays.

150th anniversary celebrations Were you Christened or married at Lansdowne? Did you attend the Sunday School, Youth Club, Inters Club, Girls’ Brigade or Scouts here? Or perhaps you attend classes held in its rooms?

The 150th anniversary of Lansdowne Crescent Methodist Church is being celebrated this year and anyone with a current or previous connection with the building is being invited to join the celebrations.

During Malvern Civic Week (From Saturday June 25th, see Page 16 for details) there will be a special exhibition of the past and present life of Lansdowne. The church will be open between 10am and 4pm each day with beautiful floral displays and light refreshments will be served.

The 150th Anniversary itself is marked on Sunday 26th June. There will be special services at which last year’s President of the Methodist Conference, Rev Kenneth Howcroft, will be the preacher. A special lunch will be served, and a ‘Bring and Share’ Tea after the 5pm service. Lunch tickets
