Summer time!

There are music festivals galore in and around Malvern this summer. MappFest is a homegrown, two day festival featuring lots of bands and takes place on the common at Link Top towards the end of June. Electricity for the event is generated with solar panels, so let’s hope for plenty of sunshine! At the start of July it’s time once again for West Fest, West Malvern’s own community music festival. Then, at the end of July we have Malvern Rocks, when bands will play all kinds of music around town throughout the weekend.

We’re lucky to have so much live music on our doorstep – no need to travel miles and no extortionate ticket prices either!

All About...

The New Roof One of Malvern’s landmark churches is undergoing major improvement work. The roof of Holy Trinity Church at Link Top is being rebuilt by a team of builders using many of the original stone slates. It took a mammoth fundraising effort to pay for the work. David Nichol, vicar at the church, tells us more.

When did the problems with the roof come to light?

The roof has been a concern for a long time and was highlighted in inspections for the past twenty years. The extent of the concerns with the roof meant the work needed to be split into two phases. The first phase to stabilise the tower and repairs to the chancel roof was completed in 2009. The second phase to reroof the main part of the building is the current project and will be completed this year.

How much was the fundraising target?

Based on the original estimate for the work, the target for this phase was £177,000, but this was more than the work will cost based on the tenders received for the work. Because the church is a listed building and in a conservation area, we have to use stone slates rather than clay tiles and extensive scaffolding is also required to get on to the roof. Thankfully we now have the money all in place and we are grateful to all who have supported the appeal.

How did you raise the money?

The Year of the Roof campaign was launched in 2014. We suggested to the congregation that if 354 people each raised £500 we would have the money to complete the work. I think everyone was intimidated but trying to encourage people to take responsibility for one small part of the fundraising helped to get it into perspective.

There have been a number of fundraising events ranging from a murder mystery evening to a brass band concert. People have also been able to sponsor a slate for the roof in memory of a loved one or as a thanksgiving for a memorable event such as a wedding. People have given generously both financially and in time towards the work. We launched a website

where donations could be made and there were a number of successful applications to grant making charities and trusts.

What work is being carried out?

All the slates on the main nave are being taken off and around 80% will be re-used. They will then be re-fixed with nails that won’t rust, on new battens and with new felt. Alongside this some stone work has been repaired on the gable ridges. The project is scheduled to take 16 weeks. When complete, the church will be watertight for the next 150 years and people will not have the burden of such a massive task hanging over their heads.

Malvern Civic Week 11-18 July Now in its fifth year, Malvern Civic Week promises ten days of events, walks and talks, music and competitions. It began four years ago as a way of bringing together the community, with emphasis on young people enjoying and celebrating the heritage of Malvern and beyond.

The title for Civic Week this year is ‘Malvern Today and its Vibrant Society’ - events will explore both contemporary and historic themes.

There are four keynote lectures given in the Forum Theatre by kind permission of Nic Lloyd including Michael St Maur Sheil taking about World War I, James Hervey-Bathurst on Eastnor Castle, Adam Hatton, design director of the new Jaguar XE car and author Paula Byrne who will talk about the life of Kathleen Kennedy, sister of US President John F. Kennedy.

One unique feature of the week is the visit of a children’s choir from Malvern’s twin town, Mariánské Lázne; this is the first time that the thirty four strong choir have visited the UK and it is hoped that a choir and/or instrumentalists from Malvern can reciprocate in 2016.

‘Civic Week remains popular’ says Roger Sutton, Vice-President of the society. ‘Two months ago we surveyed our members and 95 percent were very much in favour of it continuing.’

With such a strong local heritage, there is an almost endless supply of subjects and guest speakers. ‘We’re pushing at an open door’ continues Roger, ‘ from the Hills and local wells to the many well-known characters who lived or visited here, there are lots of things on which we can focus. Another part of our history which should be better known are Malvern’s connections with the development of radar and later on with Qinetiq.’

Many people are involved in bringing the programme of events together, not only the executive members of the society, but also Malvern Theatres and Christ Church who host events at no cost.

‘The schools’ literary competition is one of the highlights for me’ says Katharine Barber, who co-ordinates events for Civic Week. ‘We’re keen to attract younger people to events and this year we’re holding a music day for primary school children when they will learn and then perform ‘Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo’.

Fighting Parkinson’s

with Music

Judging from the laughter in Basil and Sue Sellwood’s home, this is a couple without a care in the world. That’s not quite the case. Three years ago, Sue’s life suddenly changed when she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. ’There were six months when I thought I was being a hypochondriac, but my father had the disease and I noticed the symptoms’, Sue tells us, ‘I was referred to a professor at the QE Hospital in Birmingham and within six weeks I was diagnosed.’

Although the symptoms of Parkinson’s can be partially managed with medication, little more can be done. It affects the ability to control movement and can cause tremors in the hands and body.

There are other problems as well.

‘My mobility is still good’ says Sue, ‘but speech is sometimes difficult. I used to have horrific nightmares in my sleep which is one of the early symptoms.’

Sue and her husband Basil joined a local support group run by the Worcester Branch of Parkinson’s UK, a national charity. ‘The value of the friendship group is immeasurable’ says Basil, ‘we chat, exchange notes and you quickly discover you are all in the same boat.’

Now, Basil’s love of jazz music has led to a fundraising venture for the Worcester Branch of Parkinson’s UK that will see one of the greats of British jazz perform in Malvern later this June.

‘I heard that Bredon Rotary Club had made us their nominated charity this year. I suggested that together we put on a fundraising concert with Chris Barber at the Forum Theatre in Malvern, and they said ‘Why not?’’

‘This year I chose the Worcester Branch of Parkinson’s UK as our nominated charity. I am personally aware of a number of people with Parkinson’s and as a club we are very keen to to what we can to offer support.’

For Basil, the Chris Barber concert will bring back memories of the first time he saw him play half a

century ago. ‘I first saw him play at Birmingham Town Hall when I was aged 15’ he says. ‘I was flabbergasted and completely hooked.’

Basil took up trombone himself, but his playing days soon came to an end when he punctured a lung while playing at a gig in Worcester. ‘I was doubled up in pain. I was taken by a friend to the Infirmary and a doctor confirmed I had a weak spot on my right lung.’

Despite the accident Basil continued to listen to and love jazz music and so the Chris Barber concert will be a special moment for him.

In the meantime, Sue continues to lead a full and active life despite her diagnosis with Parkinson’s.

She volunteers with local charity fundraising groups and plays the piano in her spare time, but sometimes finds the disease difficult to live with.

‘She has good days and bad days’ says Basil, ‘it’s a dreadful disease but we’re in it together.’

Local News

Priory Bells At the start of this year, the bells of The Priory fell silent, as they were taken down from the tower to be refurbished at a bell foundry in London. A group from The Priory has just paid a visit to see the work progressing, and Trevor Still, who is the Bellframe Project Manager, tells us more.

On Saturday 16th May a party of ringers and congregation of Malvern Priory visited Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London.

We were fortunate to be given a very interesting and informative tour of the oldest manufacturing company’s workshops in the country. The company dates from 1420, but moved to their current premises in 1738.

The tour, the fascinating history and the work done at the bell foundry were very entertainingly shown to us by the managing director Alan Hughes. We were able to see one of the Priory bells in preparation for tuning on a large vertical lathe and also saw parts of the Priory’s new bell wheels being made in their carpenter’s workshop.

The bells will return to the Priory in July when there will be a chance to see them before they disappear up the tower and into the bell chamber.

Before the bells are installed in the tower, a new strengthening steel frame will be fitted around the existing frame so that the bells can be rung more easily. We are looking forward to hearing the Priory’s bells ring out once again in August.

We have raised over £232,000 for the Priory’s Bells project, including £90,200 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and many generous donations.

But due to cost inflation and additional work necessary for the project, we still need to raise about £10,000 to complete it.

WHAT IS A FUNERAL CELEBRANT?

The role of a Funeral Celebrant may not be something many of us are familiar with, so we've asked local celebrant, Anne Matthew, to tell us more.

Already running an established and well-respected local business, Anne recently qualified as a Civil Funeral Celebrant, which in her own words allows her to 'work closely with bereaved families to produce and deliver a truly personal and meaningful tribute to their loved one, that reflects their memories and wishes.'

'As a Civil Funeral Celebrant, I gently guide families through the difficult process of sharing memories and stories from which I produce a tribute. It is this tribute that I then deliver at the funeral service, which could be at a crematorium, burial or other location, for example a natural burial’.

Civil funerals have risen in popularity due to a significant increase in people not following a religion. A civil funeral is driven by the wishes, beliefs and values of the family, not by the person conducting the service.

There is also a move away from traditional, sombre funeral services so many of us are accustomed to, with many now wishing to ‘celebrate’ the life of their loved one. Some crematoriums now offer the facility for presentations to be projected during the service and there’s a general shift towards families being more involved in the way and manner in which they choose to say goodbye to their loved one.'

Peter Cooks Bread Whether you're a seasoned home baker or a complete beginner, there's a chance to learn more about creating the perfect bread in the company of an award-winning local bakery. As well as supplying local shops, delis and cafés, Peter Cooks Bread is now running regular workshops as part of their mission to share the joys of Real Bread.

The bakery is always a hive of activity on a Friday morning. Peter Cook, and his business partner Shona Kelly, have been working since three o’clock in the morning, preparing bread for a busy weekend. 'The dough for this bread is three days in the making' says Peter, holding up one of his Ledbury loaves. 'We create the first dough, known as the sponge, made with just a little bit of yeast, and slowly build it up until it's ready.'

Last year Peter Cooks Bread scooped the top prize at the Tiptree World Bread Awards for their Ciabatta, as well as two other awards for their Focaccia and Cider Crumb. Now the company is passing on its knowledge and skills through workshops held at the bakery at The Hop Pocket in Bishop’s Frome.

A New Portrait Despite reaching the age of 81, the renowned portrait artist Michael Noakes shows no signs of slowing down.

Michael, who lives in Malvern, recently received three new commissions and in April his portrait of the actor Sir Donald Sinden went on display at The Royal Society of Portrait Painters in London.

‘Donald was an old friend of ours’ says Michael.

‘We had first talked of a portrait decades ago, and he came to our home here before I started on the picture. I would never have put, behind an ordinary man, the livid background that is in this portrait: but it echoed the stage-lighting during a one-man show we once saw him giving here in Malvern.’

Michael has painted numerous actors, politicians and royalty, including the Queen, Margaret Thatcher and Sir Alec Guinness. After a career that stretches across decades, his work remains as much in demand as ever.

1. Put pan on the heat, add the asparagus with a small amount of water.

2. When the water has absorbed add some oil. Add the butter beans and fry for a few moments.

3. Add the garlic, chilli and lemon zest and cook for two minutes more.

4. Remove from heat, season to taste and sprinkle with chopped parsley to serve.

5. Serve with flatbread or cous cous.

Local Walk

A Midsummer Walk Hollybed Common to Midsummer Hill returning via the Gullet Quarry

Walk 14

This walk takes in the area around Castlemorton Common and includes a climb up the ramparts of an iron age hillfort as well as the delights of the Golden Valley.

Allow one and three quarter hours for this circular walk of 3.6 miles. There are some fairly strenuous sections on Midsummer Hill (932 feet). It will almost certainly be muddy in places so bring a change of footwear if driving to the area. For those interested in our ancient landscape Midsummer Hillfort is particularly impressive, the ramparts enclose two adjacent summits and a valley which date from between 470 BC to AD 30.

Access to this walk is from the delightful Golden Valley which is located on the Welland to Gloucester Road.

create space

Yesterday, at the end of a long, busy and stressful day, I took an hour to walk into town and sit in Priory Park. The sun was still strong and I sat on the grass, moving every twenty minutes or so as the shadow of a tree overtook me. I watched two girls riding their little pink bicycles and felt my body slowly, slowly relax.

As I relaxed, I gradually let go of the trials of the day. My thoughts drifted. I had a few ideas about what I’d like to do when I got back, and planned the rest of my week. A problem I’d been wrestling with suddenly untangled, and the solution became clear.

It’s all too easy to get caught up in the busyness of daily life. We often strongly resist making space, giving ourselves or others a long list of reasons of why it’s impossible to take time out. It takes determination to stop the world and get off every so often.

Sometimes we also avoid making space because we’re trying not to feel sad or angry or confused, and when we have time on our hands these feelings start rushing in. Keeping ourselves busy works for a while, but as time goes on we might reach a point where we can’t take any more and we get ill or feel emotionally overwhelmed.

Instead, we can very gradually begin to ‘make friends’ with our feelings, giving ourselves five minutes to feel sad before we get up and do the washing up, or writing about our anger every day for a week. If we can sit down with our feelings and (attempt to!) receive them calmly, they gradually lose their power and intensity and there is more space for other thoughts and feelings, including some of the nicer ones. Sometimes this feels impossible on your own – at these times it can be helpful to speak to a friend or to arrange some counselling.

When we make these spaces, we will receive relaxation, reflection, recuperation and fresh insights. We have a chance to learn from our past, and reflect on our next steps.

Are you ready to make some space? Here are a few ideas.

Find mini-spaces. Small spaces can make a big difference to our day. Find some ways of incorporating space into your daily routine – ideas include waking up ten minutes earlier and sitting quietly in the garden, writing in a journal for fifteen minutes a day, taking your tea to a different room in the house and sipping it slowly, taking three slow breaths at your computer, walking around the block or taking ten minutes to relax all your muscles one by one before you go to sleep.

Create occasional bigger spaces. Every so often we might want to make a bigger space for ourselves. Are you already protesting that there’s no way you could find the time, or that there would be no-one to look after the children or keep on top of all the work you have to do?

Think again. If you are determined you will find a way. Take an hour in a coffee shop with a novel, or an afternoon with a friend talking about your plans for the year, or a morning reflecting on your career so far and where you want to head next.

Write them in your diary, in pen!

You might want to give yourself a space right now, as soon as you’ve finished reading this article. Put it down, shut your eyes and take ten slow breaths. Notice any tension in your shoulders or elsewhere in your body. Let it go.

Create space.

Topic of the month: The Stiff Neck The fact that the expression “a pain in the neck” is used to describe anything that’s unpleasant or disagreeable says a lot about problems of the cervical spine. Symptoms can include severe pain, immobility, headache, arm pain and even dizziness and visual disturbance in some cases.

Causes of stiff neck

A stiff neck which comes on suddenly may result from muscle injury, muscle spasm, facet joint dysfunction or disc injury. More long term pain can be due to degenerative changes in the spine associated with aging e.g. spondylosis. Occasionally diseases such as meningitis or chronic conditions like polymyalgia rheumatica and fibromyalgia syndrome may be responsible.

Diagnosis

As a general rule if the pain goes on for more than a week, it is sensible to let a qualified practitioner assess it.

A good clinical examination including a neurological work up should help to reach a diagnosis. If there are

any so called “red flags” evident then further investigation may be required.

I recently saw a patient who had a very painful neck and arm which initially looked treatable. However on neurological testing it became apparent from the findings that he had spinal cord compression. I didn’t treat him but immediately referred him for an MRI scan and subsequently he had spinal surgery to remove a disc which would gradually have taken away the use of his legs. I hasten to add that this was very unusual and I have only seen two such cases in 25 years in practice.

Treatment

A lot of cases of “wry neck” sort themselves out in a few days. Even in cases where there is a lot of wear and tear hands on treatment is very often helpful. In the modern world there is a move away from overly vigorous neck manipulation towards more gentle techniques. In most of these cases I use soft tissue work and/or acupuncture combined with steady mobilisation and specific exercises to produce the desired result.
