The ‘Brave New World’ of financial advice

By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall New rules for financial advice, known as the Retail Distribution Review, or RDR, should put an end to the ‘wideboy’ image of some advisers.

The regulators will be hoping the rules, which came into effect on December 31, will overturn negative stereotypes and put the provision of financial advice on a more professional footing.

Traditionally there were a swathe of different types of advisers, including independent financial advisers (IFAs), multi-tied agents, tied-agents, as well as a legion of bank advisers who may be any one of the above. Each could have an ‘alphabettispaghetti’ of different qualifications, which can mean next to nothing to the average consumer.

While some might show four years of advanced study, others are equivalent to just a GCSE pass.

Many appeared to offer “free” advice. Instead, the adviser collected a commission if the customer bought recommended products. This payment was often disguised within complex product charges which can seriously dent the value of your investment over time.

Not all operated on that basis. Some, like our company, offered an hourly fee, and a combination of the two, charging an agreed fee which is offset against any commission collected.

But in the wider market, for those investing in pensions, ISAs and other investments, the situation was confusing, which made it difficult to find a trustworthy and impartial adviser.

The new rules, which we embrace, should change this. They should make it far easier for customers to see exactly what advice they are paying for, by effectively banning commission.

Although some commission payments will still exist (for example on some insurance products), pension and investment companies won’t be Rob Weale is a founding partner at Smith Weale Associates. Under the new regime, all charges have to be agreed in advance. Customers should get a simple document which sets out the advice charges, showing the charge for implementation as well as the charges for managing their money if an ongoing service is required.

Rather than pay an hourly fee to the adviser, it is possible, should implementation be sought, that the fee is simply deducted from the product arranged. However, this will have been agreed at outset, allowing a comparison where product charges are concerned, and also a comparison of adviser charges. This creates a much more level playing field and creates healthy competition between advisory firms.

This change, known in the industry as the Retail Distribution Review, should drive standards up across the board, with all advisers, whether they are arranging one company’s products or qualified IFAs, required to gain additional qualifications and complete continuing training.

The new regime will create just two types of advisers. An IFA will be able to advise on all investment and pension products and will recommend products from the whole market.

They will be more concerned with financial planning and ongoing service and advice rather than ‘restricted advice’, which is centered around product selling and not always able to look at the bigger picture where the client is concerned.

Food Festival

The Great Malvern Food Festival returns to the town centre at the end of May with more entertainment and culinary delights than ever before! ‘Its the third year the Festival has been held’ says Malcolm Salisbury, who’s helped organise it, ‘and its returning because of its great success in previous years’.

The Great Malvern Food Festival takes place on Saturday 25th May from 10am until 5.30pm More than 20 food and drink stalls will offer a wide range of local produce and locally made products to sample. They’ll be setting up along Abbey Road, around Belle Vue Island and the Courtyard. In previous years the free cooking demonstrations proved hugely popular, and this year guest chefs include ‘Our Lizzy’ who runs cookery classes in Malvern.

‘Its the third year I’ve done it’ says Lizzy, ‘it really brings the town together and brings many other people along as well. Last year I organised a food trail for children which they really enjoyed.

The Wots Cooking Mobile Cookery Theatre will be along, which is always great fun to watch, and I’ll be cooking up some vegetarian recipes, because this year the Festival coincides with National Vegetarian Week.’

Another of the guest chefs is Marina Ibrahim from Shropshire, who specialises in Egyptian cookery and will be demonstrating traditional recipes passed down through generations of her family.

Wandering amongst the food stalls will be street entertainer Alan Smith who plays Parisian style accordion music, while juggling and stilt-walking will be going on throughout the day to entertain the crowds.

Great Malvern to set pulses racing A new project called 'Pulse' is launching, which will bring exciting and surprising events to the heart of Great Malvern. The idea of Pulse is to invite talented people from the local area and beyond to use our town as their stage or canvas, putting on events that will draw in the whole community and create a real buzz.

Pulse stems from a bid to win funding to become a 'Portas Pilot' High Street, a government scheme led by Mary Portas to revitalise town centres with a cash grant. The Great Malvern Town Team, made up of local traders, District & Town council members as well as High Street Malvern, were awarded a £10,000 grant to help implement some of their ideas. It was decided that the money should be used to turn the town into a cultural 'hub'.

'We are fortunate to have an abundance of creative people in our town' says Chris Marks from the Great Malvern Association of Traders.

'We are planning to hold regular, free events throughout the year to encourage locals and

tourists to visit the town. Our aim is to ensure that on most weekends there will be something to see and take part in, whether its musical entertainment, street performances, or perhaps a surprise, like Yarn Bombing!'

Malvern

Food Bank Today, in Malvern, there will be people who struggle to put food on their plate or to feed their family. There are many reasons why this happens. It might happen because of redundancy, illness, family breakdown or debt. A little over two months ago, a Foodbank opened in Malvern to help these people. David Wareing, one of its founder members, tells us all about their work.

The idea came out of a discussion between the members of Churches Together in Malvern, because an existing service at Lyttleton Well (on Church Street) was coming under more and more pressure. We’d also seen a number of stories in the media about the work of foodbanks elsewhere, and we questioned whether something similar might be needed in Malvern. It seemed as though locally, Lyttleton might be the tip of an iceberg.

The first requirement of setting up a foodbank is to meet people’s need for food, but you also have to try and provide a nutritious, balanced diet. Part of the difficulty is in the safe storage of food. Our stock is non-perishable, things like pasta, packet and tinned foods. We try to include toiletries as well because people struggling to put food on the table won’t spend money on themselves, they often put the welfare of others and even pets before their own needs.

We first came together in September of last year and began the work of setting up. At that time its fair to say our knowledge was pretty minimal!

After some discussion, we decided to affiliate ourselves with the Trussell Trust, a charity whose work promotes foodbanks across the UK and beyond. We have drawn up our own constitution and we are pursuing formal registration with The Charities Commission. The Trussell Trust is advising us which is very helpful and we are working to their guidelines.

Until we opened in February, a lot of work went into setting up the Malvern Foodbank. We advertised for volunteers and were overwhelmed with the amount of support we received. We’ve been equally overwhelmed with all the donations of food as well as the financial support we’ve received so far. We are open on Mondays and

Thursdays, and we are based on the Lower Howsell Road Industrial Estate.

People seeking help must be referred by one of a recognised group of statutory and voluntary agencies. The people working in those organisations, whether they are social workers, health visitors or the police will make the assessment based on need. We don’t pry into the circumstances of the people we help. We won’t talk about their circumstances, unless they initiate that conversation and genuinely want to talk. We can signpost people towards other forms of help. We believe its important to tackle the root cause of people’s problems, so we look to local agencies not only to provide short term support but also to help turn people’s lives around in the longer term.

Our vision is for the Foodbank to be community managed. Although we evolved through Churches Together, our members come from local churches as well as the wider community.

Everybody is welcome, this is all about neighbours helping neighbours.

Topic of the month: The injured knee In the week that my wife found out that she had ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament I feel prompted to talk about common knee injuries.

A complex joint

The knee is the largest and most complicated joint in the body. The main joint is unusual in having two compartments but further complicated by the knee cap mechanism and another articulation with the top of the fibula bone. With the hilly terrain in Malvern, any knee problem can become a significant disability.

Osteoarthritis

This is a hugely common problem in the knee especially in those who have spent their earlier years doing sports. The pathology is microscopic trauma to the articular cartilage within the joint, which develops into an erosive inflammatory process leading to pain and restriction. Medication, physical therapy and ultimately joint replacement all have their place in managing the problem.

the leg within the knee. The injury may be as trivial as turning in bed. Due to poor blood supply these menisci never heal and although some people get by with a torn cartilage, early diagnosis is preferable as surgeons can often repair a freshly torn one. If left the damage tends to worsen with use, necessitating removal and inevitably leading to later arthritis.

Ligament injuries

The knee relies on a number of strong ligaments for its stability. However these can be overstrained or worse still snapped by severe trauma such as skiing injuries and rugby tackles. Ligaments heal very slowly or not at all if snapped. It is often thought better to break a bone than damage a ligament (not that one ever gets a choice!) as the bone will heal in a fraction of the time.

Treatment

My main job with knees is to assess whether I can treat them or whether they need surgical intervention.

Chilli Festival at Eastnor Castle Sunday 5 & Monday 6 May Its one of the most colourful and certainly one of the hottest local events this Spring. The Chilli Festival returns to Eastnor Castle for the May Day Bank Holiday weekend.

One of this year’s highlights will be a chilli eating competition. ‘Its the first time we’ve ever done anything like this’ says Sarah Roberts, Eastnor’s Marketing Co-ordinator. ‘We’re looking for entrants who can handle the heat!’

Last year’s event was so popular the organisers decided to put it on once again. ‘Last year was fantastic, and we’ll be building on that success’ says Sarah. ‘We’ll have all kinds of stalls offering everything from chilli chutney, chilli chocolate, cakes and even a chilli wine! These are supplied by a mix of local and national food suppliers and companies.’

As well as cookery demonstrations there’s music from a Steel Drum band and from Los Squideros, a fantastically fun local group whose music has a mexican and latin style.

Food festivals have gained in popularity in recent years, and the Chilli Festival aims to bring you that experience with a hot and spicy twist. Ticket details can be found on the adjacent advert and your entry also gives you access to Eastnor’s beautiful grounds and the castle itself.

CHILLI FACTS Chillies come in a huge array of shapes, sizes, colours and heat strengths. They are indigenous to Central and South America and arrived in Europe following the Spanish conquest.

The heat of chillies is measured using the Scoville Scale which was developed by an American pharmacist named Wilbur Scoville. Tabasco Sauce has a heat of between 2,500 & 5,000 units, According to Guinness World Records, the hottest chilli is the Trinidad Scorpion 'Butch T' with a rating of 1,463,700 Scoville Heat Units!

The workshop helps people have a better understanding of what they are going through.

Every year about 300,000 people in Britain go through divorce or the breakdown of a significant relationship. Divorce Recovery Workshop is a non-profit making, national charity, whose objective is to help individuals come to terms with a breakdown, grow through the experience and aid recovery. It has branches in several areas but not, until last year, in Malvern. When Kathleen Barclay was going through a divorce and was looking for a support group, she found nothing available in the area. Undeterred, she tracked down a DRW course, though at some distance away. She found the course so helpful and inspirational that, with the help of DRW, she got a team together to set up a branch in Malvern.

In April of last year the new Malvern Branch held its first of two very successful workshops, with a second in November. Each workshop consisted of six two-hour sessions. At each session there was an introductory 30-minute video, followed by discussion in small groups of the different aspects of divorce, from acceptance of the situation, through to thinking about new relationships. Each group had an experienced facilitator who helped participants to share their experiences and learn from others. There is never any pressure – on the contrary, the atmosphere is supportive and confidential. The facilitators have all been through a divorce or relationship breakdown themselves and have completed the workshops.

The breakdown of a relationship can be a

traumatic event. So many different emotions are experienced, from shock and disbelief, to rejection, anger, bitterness and guilt. Yet while society allows for example the bereaved to take years to adjust, the divorced and separated are frequently expected to “pull themselves together”.

DRW helps people have a better understanding of what they are going through, and provides support and friendship from others in similar situations. The Malvern team is there to help you, whatever stage of the process you have reached and whether it’s weeks or even years since the breakdown.

All facilitators give their time on a voluntary basis and the charity is non-profit making; however, there is a charge to cover the costs of the 6 sessions. The next workshop in Malvern will be held on Wednesday evenings on the following dates: 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd May, and 5th and 12th June. The venue is a short drive from the centre of Malvern, with free parking available.

All About...

Stanbrook Abbey Stanbrook Abbey in Callow End has an exciting and varied programme of events planned for this Spring. Paul Motzheim from the Abbey tells us more.

How long is it since you re-opened the Abbey?

We took over the property in 2010, and spent a lot of time refurbishing it, with help and advice from English Heritage. We have created a genuinely breathtaking venue for events and days out, and our intention is for us to become very much part of the local community. Although people travel from all over Britain and beyond to visit, we are very keen to see local people enjoy Stanbrook Abbey as much as possible. We hold many events here as well as Sunday Lunch and Afternoon Tea on selected days.

Tell us more about the property Stanbrook was designed by the architect Edward Welby Pugin, who’s father Augustus led the English Gothic revival, the distinctive style of so many of Britain’s iconic Victorian buildings. The Abbey shows many of these characteristic motifs in its stonework and stained glass windows. After its inauguration in 1871, a Benedictine Order of nuns was resident here until they moved to new premises in Yorkshire in 2009. We have refurbished the building to a very high and luxurious standard, but retained its character and beauty. The building is a local landmark and holds a special place in many people’s hearts. We are well aware of this, and are doing our best to renew Stanbrook’s position as a centre of local life.

What kind of events will take place?

We have held a number of Bridal Fairs here which have been a great success and we’ve also staged choral evenings in the Callow Great Hall, a former chapel which has a superb acoustic for musical events. Events are also planned with the English String Orchestra. Plans also include us hosting all sorts of events, including pottery and flower arranging workshops, to which local people are welcome.

Weddings are an important part of what we do, and the Abbey provides a beautiful backdrop for couples getting married. We also host dinners

for various local organisations. We can cater for up to 100 guests, but we also have other, private dining areas for smaller groups of people. We have luxurious accommodation on site, including the Brides Manor, which has five bedrooms, each with its own private suite. This is not only used for weddings, but also by local companies who need accommodation for corporate clients, and also by families for breaks away from home. We are now preparing to extend the site further, increasing the range of facilities we offer. By late 2014 we will have more accomodation on site as well as plans for a luxurious Spa complex.

What Spring events are you hosting?

There’s a special evening coming up for St Richard’s Hospice on Friday 19 April, which will raise money to support their work throughout Worcestershire. Over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend we have a fantastic Jazz event in the grounds. As well as our band playing a mix of modern and jazz classics, our chefs will be hosting a barbecue using fresh local ingredients.

In June there’s a traditional British Afternoon Tea & Pimms Party. We’re hoping to re-capture some of the spirit of last year’s Jubilee celebrations and guests will enjoy a full spread of food, a glass of Pimms and great live music. And don’t forget Father’s Day on June 16th. We’re offering a whisky & port tasting session followed by lunch, then a tour of our beautiful building and grounds.

We see ourselves very much as a space for the local community to use and Callow End is only a few minutes drive from the centre of Great Malvern, so please come and join us soon.

Dealing with addictions & compulsions

By Satyavani (Fiona) Robyn from Malvern I have a confession. I am a teensy bit addicted to social media. Facebook, Twitter…on a bad day, I check my notifications on Facebook several times in five minutes.

This gets in the way of my work, but it also sucks time from me and leaves me feeling jittery. It gets worse when I’m trying to avoid something, like writing my novel.

All of us have various addictions and compulsions, some more powerful than others, and with various side–effects and consequences.

We might have a colleague who isn’t worth speaking to until after their first cup of coffee, or a friend who’s hopelessly addicted to a soap opera.

Some of us might feel our emotional well-being is dependent on our daily walk on the hills.

The Buddhist approach to addiction is that we become dependent on certain habits or substances when we are trying to avoid something we don’t like. We have a stressful day so we have a glass of wine when we get in, just as a treat and to help us relax, but as time goes on we become more and more likely to deal with our stress in this way.

We can’t avoid the things we don’t like, but we can start to face them square on without running away. If we feel stressful after work, we might sit quietly for ten minutes and let our muscles slowly relax, or talk things over with our partner. If we’re avoiding dealing with a nasty pile of paperwork, we might start to tackle it bit by bit rather than reaching for the chocolate.

Since the New Year I’ve been keeping my compulsion in check by banning myself from the internet before midday. It has an amazing effect on the shape of my mornings, and leaves me free to write and to get things done with no distraction.

It’s still early days, but I’m feeling a new freedom, if you would like to feel this same freedom, here are my tips for dealing with your own addiction: Acknowledge that you have a problem. Take a long objective look at the behaviour you feel worried about, ask your friends (who don’t have the same addiction!) for their opinion, and try to notice when you’re going into denial. In the Twelve Step programmes, the first step is to acknowledge that we are no longer in control of

our addiction but that it is in control of us. This is a big step.

Become aware of any patterns. Get curious about your compulsion. How do you feel just before you eat the second slice of cheesecake?

Are you squashing down some anger? What happens when you don’t eat it for five minutes, can you feel any tension in your body and how does it change over time? What are you trying to avoid? Try making a few notes every day and see if anything emerges.

Make a plan. Will you tackle your addiction by going ‘cold turkey’, or cut back gradually? What new (good) habits can you substitute for the old ones? Will you give yourself incentives, like spending the money for cigarettes on a weekend away? Try writing a list of benefits of breaking your addiction and go back to it when you waver.

Seek professional help. Addictions can be incredibly difficult to break, especially when they have a long history, when substances are involved or when you’ve been using them to avoid some psychological pain. There are a number of places where you can find specialised help – speak to your doctor, look online, find a local Twelve Step programme, book an appointment with a therapist, get a book out of the library or ask a friend to support you.

Don’t give up. If you fall off the wagon, try to understand what went wrong and then repeat the first four steps. Get extra support if you can.

It can take several attempts to change deeply ingrained habits, so taking one step backwards before taking two steps forwards can be part of the process.

Alternative Town Centre Walk Carl Flint, writer of three ‘Pictorial Guide’ books of the Malvern Hills, introduces his second local walk on the hills. This eclectic ‘alternative’ walk is a local walk with a difference. If you go for this walk you will be introduced to a number of Malvern’s hidden historical landmarks.

There are many facts about Malvern that even life-long residents might not be aware of, and this walk around the town centre will show you many interesting facets of our town's history. Have you spotted the Blue Plaque on Montreal House (on Worcester Road) which marks the house where Charles Darwin and his daughter stayed when visiting Malvern? Have you seen the dragon peering from the rooftop of the gatehouse at Davenham Care Home? Have you spotted the small brass plaque on Church Street, marking the premises of the former Malvern Town Gentlemen's Club? The Woman in Black The spine chilling novel from Susan Hill The Woman in Black, now a major motion picture and specially adapted for stage comes to Malvern Theatres on Mon 13 to Sat 18 May. Proud and solitary, Eel Marsh House surveys the windswept reaches of the salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway. Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, is summoned to attend the funeral of Mrs Alice Drablow, the house’s sole inhabitant, unaware of the tragic secrets which lie hidden behind the shuttered windows. It is not until he glimpses a wasted young woman dressed all in black at the funeral, that a creeping sense of unease begins to take hold. This feeling is deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk of the woman in black – and her terrible purpose.
