Malvern Cube A year after a deal was struck to hand over Malvern’s former Youth Centre to the community, we hear how it is going and what they still want to achieve. Sculpture by Jacob Rock For everyone involved in running Malvern Cube, it’s been a busy year. It’s almost exactly twelve months since an agreement was reached to let a community-based group take on the former Youth Centre on Albert Road North. After further negotiation and discussion, in May of this year the lease of the building was taken on by the Malvern Youth and Community Trust, a group of people determined to see the building continue to be used by local people. Fast forward to the present and today it’s playing host to a growing number of activities and events. ‘A year ago the feeling was one of elation,’ says Lisa Loudon, one of the Trustees of the Cube, ‘now we’re busy improving our facilities and we have a large group of supporters.’ Groups like the University of the Third Age use it for some of their meetings, while recent improvements to disability access mean a wider range of people can visit. Drama groups have been attracted by the availability of different rooms and spaces they can hire, while musicians can use facilities including a mixing desk to record tracks. The Theatre space can be hired and is used for regular film afternoons, there’s an art room and a café. ‘Our hire costs are reasonable and we’re happy to talk to groups to see if we can agree a price that works for them’ says Lisa.

6

Although youth work is no longer the only purpose for the building, there are still activities focussed on younger people. Skateboarding sessions, drama, music events and career guidance services take place every week and Jon White, a qualified youth and community worker runs the centre. The Cube hosts performances of comedy, poetry and live music most weeks and sees part of its future as a performance venue, which of course was long part of its traditional role. Over the years its seen comedians including Jo Brand, Eddie Izzard and Jack Dee perform here, while musically everyone from Deep Purple to Jethro Tull and Nigel Kennedy have graced its stage. Although there are plenty of anecdotal stories about who performed and when, as far as anybody knows the history of the building has never been fully recorded and so a project is now underway to do just that. A community grant has been awarded by the County Council to help discover, interview and record people’s memories of the old Youth Centre. ‘It was certainly an important venue in the local arts scene’ says Lisa ‘and generations of local families have come here to enjoy themselves. We really want them all to get in touch with us to tell their stories.’

Event at the Cube Repair Café - 1 December What do you do with a chair when the leg has come loose? With a toaster that no longer works or a woollen jumper with moth holes? Before you head for the bin, think again! A new idea to try and bring new life to old objects is starting at The Malvern Cube. It’s called the Malvern Hills Repair Café and the idea is simple; if you have something broken, bring it along and free expert advice will be on hand to see if it can be mended. The first session on December 1st should be the start of many, for future dates keep an eye on the website of Transition Malvern Hills, who have organised the event. www.transitionmalvernhills.org.uk www.repaircafe.org

In the meantime, work to improve the building continues. The Café, one meeting space, an artists’ green room and the outdoor areas need improvement and the Trust is keen to gain support from local businesses. If anybody can help they’d be grateful for either donations or for offers of work.

Christmas Extravaganza 8 December The Barnards Green Extravaganza taking place on the 8th of December is going to be bigger and better than ever this year. We have a professional Puppet Theatre putting on free shows for the Children at 11am, 12pm and 1.30pm. The shows are entitled ‘Fox’s Christmas’ and ‘Toby and the Sausages’ and will be great interactive fun. We are also offering a free paint-your-own pottery Christmas decoration for the first 30 children to visit Green Frog Pottery. Father Christmas will be resident in his own decorated grotto in TP Travel to hear any special present requests. We are also holding for the first time a ‘Pets in Pictures’ Competition where you can dress your

dog up in a Christmas outfit and they can have their picture taken by a photographer and then be entered into a competition. Some Christmas outfits and accessories are provided but feel free to invent your own too. All entrants will have their pictures displayed on digital photo frames in one of the shop windows the next week and receive a copy for themselves. Prizes for the most fun and festive photos have been donated by Masefield Vets. We have wonderful music provided by a Victorian barrel organ, choirs and bands. There will also be fancy dress characters, face painting, craft stalls and tombola. The Extravaganza is designed to say thank you to the local community for supporting the Barnards Green Traders throughout the year and helping to make it such a vibrant trading community. The traders are working hard this year to provide funds for two very local and worthwhile charities; Malvern Special Families and Community Action Malvern Hills. Everyone is invited to come and join in with all the fun on Saturday 8th of December. We are grateful for the sponsorship from Malvern Hills District Council, Malvern Town Council and ‘District Councillor Steve Brown for the Puppet Theatre Shows.

Parrys of Malvern choosing that special present for Christmas David & Felicity Siviter

Do you need to find a special present for someone this Christmas? Parrys the Jewellers on Church Street in the centre of Malvern pride themselves on being able to help. ‘Diamonds continue to be incredibly popular’ says David Siviter who runs the family business. ‘Our Hot Diamonds range is the choice of many at the moment, the collection starts at forty pounds with an impressive choice of styles.’ At the other end of the scale David is on hand to explain the different qualities and properties of the fine gold & diamond jewellery that Parrys keep in stock. ‘This year we have a new range of silver marcasite jewellery’ adds David’s wife Felicity. ‘This type of jewellery was popular in the 1920s and 30s, and its enjoying a revival with the current interest in vintage fashion, but it also has a contemporary feel to it.’ The business keeps up to date with the latest trends in jewellery fashion by visiting trade shows

and takes care to keep its own stock up to date, but there’s also an eye for continuing favourites, particularly among their collection of watches. ‘Tissot is a good, Swiss quality brand’ says David, ‘you can spend many hundreds of pounds on a top model, but the range starts from 115 pounds.’ Parry’s takes care to stock watches made by watchmakers, rather than fashion brands. Another range David puts his faith in is Lorus, with watches starting at twenty five pounds. The jewellers offers the benefit of expertise and reliability and after 38 years of business have built a solid reputation. You can enjoy proper personal service, they offer to gift wrap presents, and they will make time to help you choose the perfect gift. And for collectors of Trollbeads, there’s good news. This Christmas brings a brand new collection of beads in seasonal shades. There’s a series of eye-catching designs including an assortment of decorative Christmas Ornamental baubles. There are fun silver winter animals including polar bears, penguins and seals.

Jungle Adventure for Cradley Players For the first time in recent years, highly-regarded local drama group Cradley Village Players are staging a family show for Christmas. Their ambitious adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s ever-popular ‘The Jungle Book’ is written by Scots playwright Stuart Paterson. This new take on Kipling’s stories of life under the Indian trees is truer to the spirit and language of the original than some other versions as we follow man-child Mowgli’s search for his true home and the tiger Shere Khan’s obsession with hunting him down. As well as dramatic action, director Meg Monk and her cast promise music, movement and dance - not to mention a few spectacular fights together with fabulous sets, lighting and special effects. Though there are scenes some under 5s might find frightening, the play will thrill older children and adults. Cradley Village Player’s regular actors are joined by past and present pupils from Cradley Primary School as Bryn Batten plays Mowgli, the boy who can’t decide whether to leave the jungle where he’s been brought up by animals. His

teacher Baloo the bear is Jack Walton (last seen in Mystery and Merriment). Olivia Shalofsky (Mary in M&M) dances the part of Kaa while the snake’s long tail is made up of Hazel Dudley, Emma Dudley, Ele Batten, Katie Dudley and Molly Eldridge. Ele is also Chil, a kite and Hazel, Emma and Molly also play the monkeys Ban, Luna and Taak. The wolves Tima and Snag are Calum Shalofsky and Harry Dunnett who also perform together as Rama the bull. Among the adults, Simon Derricourt (last seen as Lucifer in M&M) is the much-feared tiger Shere Khan, Poppy Stanley is mother wolf Raksha and Jill Salmons is Akela, the father wolf. Russ Shalofsky plays the panther Bagheera and Joanne Eldridge the head of Kaa the snake. Other animal parts are taken by Cressida Dunnett, Sandra Dudley and Teresa Shalofsky while human hunters are played by Tom van Vuren, Ruth Thomas and Bill Chadney. Why not end the Christmas break with a touch of tropical heat amid the winter chill?

‘The Jungle Book’ is at Cradley Primary School from Wednesday 2nd to Saturday 5th January 2013 starting at 7.30 pm. Tickets cost £8 for adults and £5 for under-15s and are now on sale via CVP’s website (Cradleyvillageplayers.com) and at Cradley Post Office and Stores.

Well-Being

learning

from the seasons By Fiona Robyn from Malvern

Today was cold and bright. We walked through Westonbirt Arboretum and soaked up the last of the brilliant reds from the acers, mostly puddled around their trunks as we move inexorably into Winter. Trees show us clearly how the seasons change. The evergreens cling on to their leaves tenaciously, but most surrender to the change in the weather by blushing red or orange or golden and then letting go of their leaves. These gorgeous leaves slowly break down into a brown mush which helps feed the tree in readiness for the next spurt of growth in the Spring. And then Summer. And then Autumn, and the tree blushes again… There are examples of cycles throughout nature. Plants produce their flowers and fruit at particular times of the year. A crocus opens its petals afresh every morning. Fields produce bountiful crops, and then lay fallow as they slowly regain their nutrients. As human beings we also move through cycles – year–long cycles which follow the Seasons, and also smaller cycles of a working week or a single day. We can even notice cycles within a single minute! My energy levels change and cycle in two different ways. Firstly, my energy levels go up and down depending on a number of external factors such as the weather, my health, what demands are made of me by my work etc. Secondly they are affected by various choices I make - how much sleep I get, how well I eat, how hard I push myself to finish tasks that need finishing... I’d suggest that us humans aren’t as good as the trees at surrendering to the various cycles we move through. We make ourselves keep going when we really need to rest, or we get stuck inside when a bit of Summer fun would do us good. Everything needs pushing in the Springtime. Those sudden bright bursts of daffodils and tulips take a lot of stored–up energy. I can’t spend my whole year (or a whole week) in a state of high energy, which is the equivalent of Spring. I expend this kind of energy when I make plans to

24

grow our business, when I meet new people, or when I do lots of writing. In my experience, I work best when I try to respect my energy levels and respond to them, rather than ignoring them and ploughing on regardless. After a period of Spring–like activity, I feel the need for a different kind of rhythm. This might be an Autumnal slowing down, a Wintery kind of hibernation, or a Summery pause to enjoy the fruits of my labours. When are your high–energy times of the day, the week, or the year? Do you get a good balance of these different phases of the seasonal cycle? Do you arrange some quieter time after a period of busy–ness, or look for new challenges after a period of rest? As you read the following list, think about which parts of the seasonal cycle you are currently lacking, and how you might find some more space for Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter energy. 1. Spring. This energy is all about things that are ‘new’, which can be tiring! Joining a new evening class, looking for a new job, and giving your house a huge clear–out are typical ‘Spring’ tasks. Some people feel this kind of energy first thing in the morning, and some feel it late at night… 2. Summer. During the Summer, we enjoy the fruits of all the hard work of the Spring. We nourish ourselves and have fun. This energy might be going to an art gallery, or cooking and enjoying a three course meal. 3. Autumn. Everything starts slowing down in the Autumn. We begin to prepare for the Winter ahead, and to make the most of what we have. Autumn tasks might be pruning our garden, or knitting a woolly jumper… 4. Winter. We all need time to recuperate and rejuvenate, just like fallow fields. Winter energy is when we stay in and watch a film, or spend more time in our garden, or go on more walks. It is often accompanied by lots of rest and lots of contemplation. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day, whatever part of the cycle you’re in!

Aches and Pains Treatment Clinic at Prospect View Medical Centre Ask the Osteopath

David V Jones BSc(Hons) DO Registered Osteopath

Your questions answered: After 22 years in practice and over 50,000 treatments I have seen many interesting cases.

Topic of the month: Arm pain due to Brachialgia (cervical radiculopathy)

Brachialgia is the technical term meaning pain in the arm due to interference with the nerves. It is to the arm, what sciatica is to the leg and it may be accompanied by weakness, numbness or pins and needles.

What are the main causes?

The nerves that provide sensation and power to the arms originate from the lower half of the neck. The roots of these nerves leave the spinal cord through small gaps on the lateral side of the spine, which are called the exit foramina. The roots then join up to form the three main nerves for the arm (median, radial and ulnar). Commonly the nerve roots get pinched at the point that they leave the spinal column. This can be due to degenerative change such as arthritis and spondylosis. It can also be caused by disc injuries, spinal instability and whiplash

Diagnosis

As ever accurate diagnosis is important. The trained practitioner will usually find many clues as to where the problem originates. For example, the particular finger or area of the arm affected usually reveals which level of the neck is involved. This can be backed up by checking reflexes and muscle power. More difficult cases may require X-ray or better still MRI scan.

Treatment

A high percentage of cases will respond to simple non invasive hands-on techniques. Manipulation, soft tissue work and medical acupuncture are often all that is needed to relieve the problem. More difficult cases may require injection or even surgery, although the latter should always be a last resort due to the risks involved.

Other causes of arm pain

Some people develop an extra rib above all the others at the base of the neck (cervical rib). This will often lead to pain and altered sensation in the ring and little finger.Occasionally lung disease at the top (apex) of the lung will cause pressure on the nerves and give similar symptoms. This clinic is privately run at Prospect View by David Jones DO. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.

Do you dream of a good night’s sleep? I always know when I’ve had a good night’s sleep, don’t you? I wake refreshed, revitalised and keen to get on with my day. I can concentrate better, I don’t keep losing things and I can think more clearly. I take difficult decisions in my stride and brush off emotional upsets with a wave of my hand. At the end of the day, although tired, I feel a real sense of achievement. In fact, I feel much more like ‘me’! Why is sleep important? Well, there are 5 different stages of sleep, the last of these stages is the REM phase (Rapid Eye Movement). We progress through these stages to REM and then we start all over again. When feeling well, people spend almost 50% of the sleeping time in Stage 2, 20% in REM and the remaining 30% in the other stages. Different stages have different functions with some repairing the wear and tear on the body and the REM stage repairing our minds, clearing out the emotional fall out from any frustrations or upsets we have experienced in the day. Habitual negative thinking activates the fight/flight centre in the primitive brain and over time can distort the REM stage of sleep. If the primitive brain is activated it wants to keep you ‘safe’ and so prevents you from sleeping deeply. As a result, emotional angst can build up and be carried over to the next day so you can wake up with a sense of dread. Anxiety, anger and depression are often part of a negative cycle caused by negative thinking and poor sleep. However, help is at hand! Solution Focused Coaching and Hypnotherapy can reduce negative thinking and put you back in control of your emotions. The use of trance in the coaching sessions speeds up positive changes by calming the primitive brain. Trance is an everyday experience when your attention is focused on something in particular. We often ‘day dream’ or ‘switch off’ in the day so this is a skill we all have and use frequently. Trance can only ever be self-induced so that you remain in complete control. Your primitive brain wouldn’t have it any other way! I offer a free initial consultation of 40 minutes to enable you to find out more about the approach and whether it is right for you. Subsequent sessions cost £50 for 50 minutes. In the first session you are provided with a free relaxation CD to listen to just before you go to sleep.

If you think I can help, contact me, Susanne Simms on 07947 642 735 to arrange an appointment or visit my website at www.hypnomalvern.com

Nature

Over many years, the tree line has been creeping gradually up the hills, with sycamore and other trees growing up through, and ultimately destroying, the grassland. The short grassy turf on the upper slopes of the hills - known as ‘acid grassland’ - is a nationally important wildlife habitat, so it is really important to try to restore these areas. As well as more common heathland plants such as bilberry and heather, we have some really rare grassland flowers such as the stunningly beautiful Spring cinquefoil – a buttercup-like flower, more usually found on high mountains. Without these grasslands, we would also lose the iconic Skylark, which nests in open short grassy areas, and some other more elusive and less well known species such Slow worms and the rare Grayling butterfly. The first step is to cut out the trees and shrubs growing up in the grassland. We will be clearing trees and scrub between now and February in various places from North Hill in the north to Ragged Stone Hill in the south. This is a difficult job, working on steep terrain in all weathers, so we are lucky to have a very capable workforce,

more skylarks on the hills? This winter the Malvern Hills Conservators are extending their grassland restoration project to more areas of the Malverns. Their new Chair Helen Stace explains why the work should help increasingly rare plants and birdlife return to the Hills. and some excellent local contractors, to do a good and careful job for us. Then we bring in sheep and cows to keep the cleared areas open. The Galloways and Highland cattle are particularly well suited to the pasture and terrain of the Malverns according to Matthew Rouse who manages the animals at the northern end of the hills. ‘They will eat pretty much anything’ says Matthew, ‘from Rosebay Willowherb to Brambles. The Cheviot sheep are better suited to short grass so they work very well as a team.’ We keep the cattle and sheep on the northern section of the hills with electric fencing to target the most important area. It also stops them getting into gardens and down onto roads. We do our utmost to maintain access along the main paths, so we hope they are not too much of an inconvenience to walkers. So, thanks to our workforce and the grazing animals, we hope to continue improving the wildlife, habitats and landscape of the hills, for everyone to enjoy!

Community focus

Malvern Theatre

Players

The Malvern Theatre Players was formed in 1977 as the resident amateur company of Malvern Theatres. Its members are currently preparing for their latest production, ‘The Wind in the Willows’. Malvern has long been regarded as a centre of theatrical excellence and the Malvern Theatre Players aim has always been to complement this with a varied repertory of local productions. Currently, there are two main stage productions each year. Recent productions on the main stage of the Theatre have included The Forsyte Saga, The Ghost Train and We Happy Few. The Company also presents large cast and musical shows, examples of which are Alice in Wonderland and The Secret Garden. The Company operates in the Forum, Festival and Coach House Theatres. One of the Players’ great successes has been, along with work from other local groups, the establishment of The Coach House Theatre. The Victorian building, standing next to the main Theatre, was originally a stables and coach house. In about 1984 it was condemned as unsafe and plans for its demolition were considered. Local people successfully campaigned to save the building and the Players then funded the reinforcement of the structure so it could continue to be used for the storage of scenery and props. Further improvements continued on the building, in the late 1990s the Malvern Theatre Association funded the refurbishment of an associated building as a meeting and gallery space. In 2002 the Players obtained planning consent to further develop the buildings into a studio theatre. Much of the work was carried out by members of the players until its final opening in May 2006 with a production of Billy Liar. Principal contributors to the cost of the final conversion and continuing improvements have included the National Lottery, the Elmley Foundation and Arts Council England. It’s not just about performance. Today the Players offer training courses in all aspects of stage craft and are regular contributors to education

52

projects, including summer courses, production discussions and theatre tours. They also provide a complete range of theatrical services and hold a large stock of properties, effects and equipment for hire at budget prices. For information on this or any other aspects of the Malvern Theatre Players, you can contact the Company Manager on (01684) 569011 or visit their website at www.malverntheatreplayers.co.uk Malvern Theatre Players, Theatre House, Grange Road, Malvern, Worcs WR14 3HA. For their 36th Season the Players are performing The Wind in the Willows at the Forum Theatre in Malvern between 9th & 13th January. It’s an enchanting tale of river-folk which is faithfully retold in a new adaptation by Emelia Marriette of Kenneth Grahame’s much loved story. The combination of nostalgia for times gone by and simple humour combined with audience participation will be a certain hit. Mr Toad is in his element in this production, defending his rights as a car stealing, horn-tooting, tyre-burning speed freak. His friends, Ratty, Mole, Badger and Otter rescue him from the worst of his excesses and together the famous team save the riverbank from the hooligan, bullying weasels in a final battle.

The Wind in the Willows runs from 9th January to 13th January. Tickets cost £14 with concessions available for the over 60’s and half price for the Under 16s. These can be purchased from the box office of Malvern Theatres.

trying something new

All to keep fit! About... Forget New Year Resolutions in January and make December the month to take up a new pastime! Below are three ideas, all of which happen locally. Club Dance UK offers classes in Malvern, with everything from belly dancing to burlesque Dawn-Marie Wedlock tells us: ‘Despite our best efforts, the excesses of the festive season creep into our lives no matter how we try to stay under control. This is often followed by guilt and the need to throw ourselves into the New Year by doing something about it. As a result many gym memberships are wasted, we attend classes and feel uncomfortable and self-conscious, or we berate ourselves by not doing anything. The best advice to take on board is to accept that we are human, that everything should be in moderation, and the fun and enjoyment we have over Christmas should reflect how we enter the New Year. Be kind to yourself, aim gently to feel more positive and find a form of exercise you enjoy. What a lot of people are not aware of is that the after effects of excess can be fairly short lived, and can be reversed within a couple of days; simply cut out the excess, increase water intake, and get out for a brisk walk. The effects of the festive season are not something to get depressed about, but are simply a natural ‘hiccup’ in our everyday routine, so enjoy, just not for too long!’ For information on her classes please call 07795 462510 or look at www.clubdanceuk.co.uk

Kdence Nordic Walking groups exercise across the Hills and venture as far as Eastnor and Ledbury Its run by Kate Dawe: ‘Nordic Walking is an enhancement of ordinary walking; it makes something we can all do twice as effective. It is a specific exercise technique and is not to be confused with trekking, rambling or hillwalking. Nordic Walking poles add two major benefits to going for a walk, they use the upper body muscles and they propel you along, making it feel easier to work quite hard. In order to gain maximum benefit from Nordic Walking it is

56

essential to learn the correct technique from a qualified instructor. We offer free taster sessions as well as courses in Nordic walking technique. We organise walks aimed at ski fitness, weight loss, wellbeing, but also a ‘sociable adventure’ walk and a one hour fitness session. Workshops and lessons take place in Ledbury, Eastnor, Colwall, the Malvern Hills, Bromyard, Leominster, Ross and Hereford.’ For more information contact 07977 59321 or visit www.kdence-nordicwalking.co.uk

Heartland Tai Chi runs sessions in Malvern and across south Worcestershire. Alan Smith says: ‘You’ll often see a clip of people practising the slow graceful movements of Tai Chi and Chi Kung in most documentaries on China. These visually relaxing movements strengthen the body without causing any strain and are renowned for improving posture, balance, energy and well-being. Tai Chi is a meditation in movement and is an antidote to our 21st Century search for constant distraction. Heartland Tai Chi School offers classes throughout Worcestershire and offers a syllabus which suits the complete beginner, it is also an in-depth training to enrich body, heart & mind.’ For more information on Heartland Tai Chi and our local classes, please phone 01905 764848 or visit www.heartlandtaichi.com
