We’re at the time of year when it seems as though the sun barely rises before its setting again, but let’s be positive, from December 22nd the days will be getting longer!

December also marks a moment when this magazine celebrates its birthday; we began exactly two years ago. Pension Income: A Third Option?

Back in April I wrote about the changes to Pensions concerning the purchase of a lifetime annuity, and the fact you could now delay that purchase and stay invested. Of course with the current market turmoil, risking your pension fund is not a very attractive proposition. Then again, with annuity rates at an historic low, neither is purchasing a lifetime annuity. The good news is there’s a third option, an option that is new to the market place, removes investment risk but does not commit the funds forever. That third option is a Fixed Term Annuity.

What is a Fixed Term Annuity?

Fixed Term Annuities provide a guaranteed level of income for a specific term. This approach enables retired people to enjoy certainty with payments, as they would with a Lifetime Annuity, but only for the term selected rather than throughout life.

At the end of the term a Guaranteed Maturity Amount is provided, with which a further Fixed Term Annuity can be purchased. Alternatively, a conventional Lifetime Annuity or Investment Linked Annuity can be purchased. Other options may also be allowed at this point depending on the pension legislation in force at the time.

At the end of the term of the Fixed Term Annuity, the income can be reset according to requirements at that moment. The Fixed Term Annuity provides future flexibility by offering the ability to change the amount and shape of income at agreed intervals during retirement.

Income Levels There is no minimum level of income that needs to be taken, which means you can take the tax-free lump sum alone and defer income to a later date. There is a maximum income level whose limit is set by the Government Actuary’s Department (known as GAD); more often than not the income is higher than that available under a current lifetime annuity because rates are at an historic low.

A Fixed Term Annuity can be free of investment risk.

The income payments are guaranteed, as well as the Guaranteed Maturity Amount available at the end of the term, which is known at the outset of the arrangement.

As with a Lifetime Annuity, if you are married or have a financially dependent partner, the annuity can be

set up to continue paying them an income after you have died. This can be at the full rate, or at a reduced level, for example two thirds or a half. However, this continuing income is only payable for the remainder of the fixed term, with the Guaranteed Maturity Amount then being available for reinvestment by the surviving spouse or partner.

Exit strategies Fixed Term Annuity contracts expire at the end of the agreed term and offer the investor the opportunity to review and select the most appropriate income structure at that time. It is not usually possible to exit the contract during the fixed term but some providers offer the facility to switch to an enhanced lifetime annuity due to ill health. You may be eligible for an Enhanced Annuity if your health has worsened in the period between establishing the Fixed Term Annuity and the maturity date of the plan. This may lead to a significantly higher income.

Key Advantages of a fixed term annuity • You have immediate access to some or all of the tax-free lump sum available • You can choose to only take the tax-free lump sum and no income • There is no exposure to investment risk • Your income is guaranteed for the fixed term of the annuity, provided it remains within GAD limits The above is not an exhaustive list of advantages and there are disadvantages to consider. Its important to seek proper advice from an Independent Specialist. An annuity should always be purchased after a full comparison of products, as huge variations can exist in what your current pension provider and the open market can offer. Every policy holder has the right to shop around.

Christmas in Malvern big light switch on 1 From 9am until 6pm on Saturday 3rd December

This year, Malvern’s Big Christmas Lights Switch On takes place on Saturday 3rd December. The whole day will be packed with fun and entertainment with something for everyone. Throughout the daytime there will be a Craft and Winter Food Fair in the grounds of the Priory, where there is also a full and varied programme of events taking place.

A selection of the highlights: Musical entertainment involving local choirs and bands will take place on a stage at the top of Church Street, on Belle Vue Island. For children who have completed their christmas present wishlists, Father Christmas will be ready to speak to them in his Grotto at Malvern Library. Street entertainers will be wandering the streets, completing the fun and festive atmosphere throughout the town centre. The Grand Christmas Parade starts at 5.45pm, and this year features pirates, stilt walkers and musicians. The parade culminates with the lights switch on, which this year is carried out

Endings & Beginnings

By Fiona Robyn from Malvern As you read this, the leaves have been turning scarlet and beige, wrinkling up and letting go of their twigs.

The dark nights are getting longer and more and more often we’ll walk out into sparkly mornings with white clouds of breath. As winter progresses, we are inexorably reminded of nature’s endless ebb and flow.

You might be looking back at the year behind us and marvelling at how quickly it’s gone or you might be starting to think about turning the page to a fresh year ahead. As human beings, we are always surrounded by endings and beginnings. These might be small, when one term ends and another school holiday begins, or they might involve larger losses, such as a friend moving away or someone close to us dying.

Mostly, we handle these endings and beginnings as a normal part of our lives. We feel sad, we share our feelings with our friends, we have good days and bad days, we gradually feel better, and life goes on.

Sometimes, endings hit us particularly hard. This might be because what we lost was a hugely important part of our lives or our identities, like losing a job that has given our life meaning. This can be particularly difficult when we’ve experienced several losses in a short space of time, or if things have been generally more difficult and we’re more vulnerable than usual.

If you’ve been bereaved, or you’re struggling to accept the ending of something important in your life, these tips can help you to heal.

1. Acknowledge and accept all your feelings. This is something most of us are terrible at. If you’re feeling sad, or angry, or numb, then simply put, that

is what you’re feeling. It doesn’t make any difference if you ‘should have got over it by now’.

Grieving has its own timescale, and this can be longer than we might like.

2. Be kind to yourself. We can be critical of ourselves when we’re feeling vulnerable. Try to treat yourself as you would treat a best friend.

Notice when you’re telling yourself off. Be patient with yourself. Take one day at a time. Be encouraging.

3. Seek support. Many of us struggle with this, especially if we’re usually the ‘coping type’. Let your friends and family know that you’re struggling, and ask for practical help if you need it.

4. Write a journal. This will give you a reliable place to explore your thoughts and feelings, and you won’t have to worry about it getting bored or overwhelmed with you. Writing things down can be more powerful than thinking them over and over.

5. Seek professional support if you need it. Go and see your GP or seek some counselling or psychotherapy. Get in touch with the charity Cruse for a bereavement, or Relate for the ending of a relationship.

6. Have faith. Things will get better in time, even if it feels like it’s going on forever. Recognise and celebrate small improvements in your mood.

If we can allow space for our feelings about endings, then we are more likely to welcome new beginnings into our lives. Losing our job might lead us to an opportunity to do something completely different, and when our favourite rose bush dies we’ll finally have the space to plant that apple tree. Like plants that take a long time to put down roots before they venture upwards, it can be a while before the new shoots appear. Keep watering and nurturing the seed, even if you’ve given up hope of anything new appearing. One of these days, the very tip of a small bright green leaf will emerge from the earth.

One of the highlights of the morning for children young and old is the arrival of Father Christmas at 10.30am, who this year is being helped on his journey

by Miss Worcester. Spread around the Green will be stalls run by a number of local groups including the 2nd Malvern Link Brownies, the Cubs, the Wilderness Project, The Toy Library and our local police officers.

For children, all kinds of different activities and entertainment will be on hand throughout the day.

There will be a competition for children to follow from store to store, as well as a balloon race to take part in. There will be a circus skills workshop, there will be displays of karate, play rangers will be organising activities for children, and there’s even a town crier who will be shouting out announcements throughout the day! Joining him around the Green will be several pantomime characters, bringing more colour and entertainment to the day.

The businesses at Barnards Green host the event every year as a ‘thank you’ to all their customers who support local shops and the wider area thoughout the rest of the year. But the day has another benefit, with all money collected on the day donated to the charity Homestart, which is active in the local area.

The event should be great fun and they look forward to seeing you there.

Lizzy’s Recipe Mushrooms in Filo Baskets

A simple starter or can be served as a main course. Why not make the baskets ahead of time to save time on the big day?

• 25g margarine • 200g mixed mushrooms sliced thinly • 1 small onion finely chopped • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 50ml (approx) white wine • 150 -200ml single cream • handful of chopped parsley/ dill/tarragon • 6 sheets filo pastry • olive oil/margarine for brushing

Makes 6 large baskets Ready in 30 minutes

1. Preheat the oven to 200°/Gas 6, grease a bun tray.

2. Cut the filo pastry into 15cm squares. Take two squares of pastry and brush with oil or melted margarine, place on top of each other in a star shape to make a basket, place in bun tray. Repeat for rest of pastry.

3. Cook for five minutes until golden, allow to cool.

4. Melt the margarine in a saucepan and add the onion and garlic, sauté for 3 minutes then add the sliced mushrooms. Cook until the mushrooms are tender add the white wine, stir briefly then add the cream.

5.Simmer on a very low heat for 5 minutes, add the herbs and season to taste. Spoon into the filo baskets.

Don’t miss your last chance to beat the Taxman

“Don’t bury your head in the sand when it comes to your tax return” is the message from Malvern Chartered Accountants, Young & Co. Taxpayers have already missed the 31 October deadline to file a paper return for last tax year. However, all is not lost as the final deadline for returns submitted online is 31 January.

Young & Co manager, Nick Rawlings, advises “There is still time to act, but don’t leave it to the last minute”.

Nick continues “There is a subtle change to penalty arrangements this year which means that you will get a £100 penalty for a late return even if you have no tax to pay or if you have paid the tax you owe on time. This could catch out taxpayers who are in the habit of filing late”.

If H M Revenue & Customs have asked you for a tax return for 2011 then you must submit your return by the due date in order to avoid a penalty. This means that if you haven’t already filed your return you will have to register online with H M Revenue & Customs and fill in your information on their website. “It can take up to a week to register online so it is no good waiting until 30 January”, Nick says.

Many taxpayers find it easier to use an accountant to complete their tax return for them. Nick says “If your affairs are straightforward then completing your return online is not too daunting. However, if you have a business, rental income, capital gains or more complicated affairs then I would definitely advise you to take proper professional advice”. UK tax legislation is now among the most complicated in the world and there are plenty of traps for the unwary not to mention penalties for mistakes.

But if you want to find an accountant how do you know what to look for? “Anyone can call themselves an accountant”, says Nick, “but I would suggest that people look for an accountant who is a member of a proper professional body. Apart from injuries to the bones, muscles and joints of the leg there are one or two common problems that I see very regularly.

Sciatica and other “Trapped Nerves”

The nerve supply to the legs comes from the lumbar region of the spine. Consequently many different back problems can give rise to leg pain.

Commonest is the prolapsed disc (wrongly called “slipped disc”) in which the spongy shock absorbing pads between the vertebrae come into contact with the nerve roots and send severe pain down the leg. Instability of the spine (spondylolisthesis), spinal arthritis and narrowing of the spinal canal (stenosis) can also give fairly similar symptoms.

Circulation problems

All About... ...Carol Singing You’re never far from festive carol singing in Malvern this December. Here we round up some of the many events, and learn some more about their history.

So when did the tradition of carol singing start?

Carol singing as we know it really began in the thirteenth century with communal songs sung during celebrations at harvest time as well as Christmas. It was only later that carols were sung in church, and became associated with Christmas. In England and other northern European countries there is a tradition of Christmas carolling, also known as wassailing, in which groups travel from house to house, singing carols, for which they are often rewarded with money, food, or a drink.

And which is the best known carol?

Although we all have many favrourite British carols, probably the most famous internationally is Silent Night which was first performed in the tiny village of Oberndorf in Austria. The story goes that the day before Christmas Eve in 1818, Father Joseph Mohr, the pastor of Saint Nicholas church, discovered the church organ was broken, which meant there would be no music for midnight mass.

Taking a verse he had written two years previously he travelled several miles through the snow to his friend Franz Gruber, a school teacher and amateur musician, who set the words to music. At midnight mass, Father Mohr and Gruber, accompanied only by Gruber’s guitar, sang the gentle song, “Silent Night, Holy Night,” for the first time.

“Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!” has since been translated into nearly 300 languages and dialects.

Its message of heavenly peace sets the theme for

Christmas celebrations around the globe. The song was sung simultaneously in English and German by troops during the Christmas truce of 1914, as it was one of the few carols that soldiers of both sides knew.

Community Focus Christmas Carols & Lantern Procession of Light and a Christmas Concert 17 December 2011 The Reverend Val Needham writes: ‘I am approaching seventy years of age, and its my desire, while I am still able, to create enough of an event involving more and more people, especially families, their pets and of course more donkeys, for the Mayday and the Carols & Lantern Procession to grow into something for the entire community to enjoy.

People had a very festive time last year at the Carols and Lantern Procession, as the Boffy Arts Events People donated their giant lanterns to us. We will incorporate them again this year as well as the more delicate ones we provide for the children. We’re busy painting the twenty two silver lantern poles, seven gold ones plus gold & silver stars that go atop them. There are cloaks to decorate and stories to choose about some of the rescue donkeys that I will insert between each carol.

In May you may have seen our two guest rescue donkeys, Peter and Amadea, leading our Charity Mayday procession to bless the local Springs. I know that those members of the general public who joined us on that day absolutely loved the whole event, particularly as I incorporated many 17th & 18th Century Mayday customs and songs so we could present a form of living history. I am therefore including some customs dating back to medieval times in the Christmas Procession which are really delightful, including children and adults as ‘star singers’ whose role in former times was to bless the establishments and population that they passed.

12.30pm outside ‘Poundplus’ on Worcester Road and proceed to meet the donkeys at the Farmers Market in front of the Priory Gatehouse, commonly called the Abbey Gateway, where we will sing carols from 1pm.

Last year, the children who came with their parents to hear us, enchanted everyone by singing ‘Away in a Manger’ on their own. It would be delightful to encourage as many families as possible to join us again so we can repeat that very special moment.

I am then hoping, subject to weather conditions and council approval, to lead the Lantern Procession with our donkeys from the Farmers Market at 1.30pm across Belle Vue Island, along Worcester Road and into the front of The Courtyard, then along to the Unicorn before heading down Church Street to the junction with Graham Road, then processing past Priors Croft & the Theatre, before returning via the Church Pathway to the Lyttleton Rooms for our concert which begins at 2.30pm.

I have been really touched by the response from the gifted musicians who are performing for us at the concert. The Badinerie Ensemble are performing a recital of traditional reels and jigs portraying a journey through the British Isles and should have the whole audience, if not the children, on their feet. Following an interval there will be storytelling, which precedes the arrival of our own local musical group Flatworld whose irresistible music is a stunning evocation of the vibrant passions and rhythms of Eastern Europe and beyond. A grand Christmas Singalong at 4pm completes our day. The concert is free but as its aim is to raise funds for the Donkey Sanctuary, we will ask for donations during the afternoon.

We still need to feed the performers and procession team and I am trying to find helps for the refreshments in the interval, as well as recruit more donkeys for the carols and lantern procession so we can have a really festive community event. If anyone can help, I would be truly grateful.
