It’s nearly Spring … and this March there will be local events that traditionally mark the end of winter.

Madresfield Court has run its Daffodil Sunday event for many years, which is due to happen this year on March 13th, while Little Malvern Court opens its grounds a week later to help raise money for SSAFA, a charity that supports military families. Before then, we have the annual pancake race in Priory Park. Organised by Malvern Rotary Club, there’s always lots of fun and laughter for the teams & spectators.

Madresfield Court opens its grounds on Sunday 13th March for Daffodil Sunday. This annual event is a chance to see the carpets of flowers, with views to the hills and of the impressive house with its beautiful gardens. The event is between 2 and 5pm, admission is free for under 11s and £5 for everybody else - all proceeds are donated to the parish churches of Guarlford and Madresfield. 4. new memorial Malvern has a new memorial to Dr James Wilson, one of the doctors who pioneered the Malvern Water Cure. The striking monument, made from Forest of Dean stone, stands on Abbey Road near its junction with Priory Road.

the stroke club For more than 35 years, The Malvern District Stroke Club has been helping people affected by strokes and their families. Affiliated to The Stroke Association, it offers practical advice as well as social contact and support. Anna Byers is one of the organisers and tells us more.

I have a friend whose son had a postoperative stroke while in his thirties. He attends various groups and activities but whilst his speech is clear, he is very limited in what he can do and has to mobilise with an electric wheelchair.

One of the groups he attends is the Malvern Stroke Club. After the lady who ran the Club passed away, her friend Moyra held on by the skin of her teeth trying to run the Club on her own. She was on the point of deciding that the club would have to close, when my friend mentioned her predicament to me and arranged for us to meet. I am a qualified nurse and for ten years until March I was running a charity for older people in Worcester. I went along to meet everyone at this wonderfully friendly little Club and next thing I knew I was helping to run things!

Many of our members are older but younger people come along as well. Two of those who come along suffered strokes at a very young age and both are now in their 40s.

Looking ahead, our hope is to build the club up in numbers. It’s a very friendly group who meet and our meetings have a supportive family atmosphere.

Some of the challenges to people who have had a stroke are with speech, with mobility, and with manual dexterity. There is also fear of falling and loss of confidence in social situations, especially if speech is affected. As a club we aim to increase that confidence again within a safe, non-judgmental environment. We run a varied programme of activities every fortnight, chosen to

either help with manual dexterity or to stimulate thought and conversation. Sometimes we have a trip out. One of the main aims is to provide the opportunity for social interaction for people who have had similar experiences and have similar limitations.

WHAT IS A STROKE Most strokes are caused by a blockage cutting off the blood supply to the brain, but can also be caused by bleeding in or around the brain.

The quicker you receive treatment, the better your chances for a good recovery and the FAST test can help you recognise some of the most common symptoms: • FACIAL WEAKNESS: Can the person smile? Has their face fallen on one side?

• ARM WEAKNESS: Can the person raise both arms and keep them there?

• SPEECH PROBLEMS: Can the person speak clearly and understand what you say?

Is their speech slurred?

• TIME TO CALL 999. If a person fails any one of these tests, get help immediately by dialling 999.

CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS IN MALVERN

SCIENCE AND FAITH FESTIVAL

The Year of the Monkey is marked in style on 14th February at The Star Inn in North Malvern.

This year’s Science and Faith Festival in Malvern focuses on Compassion. An international lineup of guest speakers will explore issues around Education, Science, Healthcare, Governance, Economics and Faith. Starting on the evening of Friday 4th March and concluding on Sunday 6th March, events take place at various locations around Malvern. On Saturday, there’s a day of fun science for children called The Art of Science. There will be cartoon illustrating with Tony De Saulles who illustrated the Horrible Science series, science workshops and many other activities.

As in previous years, the Star holds a traditional lion dance, which is performed by professional dancers brought in especially for the event. This annual event often attracts a crowd of more than a hundred people.

This year the celebrations take place on Sunday 14th February, with the Lion Dance due to start around 2.30pm outside the restaurant on Cowleigh Road.

There will be a lunch buffet at £12 per person.

he work on the Grade 2 listed building was complicated. Before it could even start, plans needed to be drawn up, an application for Heritage Lottery Funding was submitted and permission to carry out the work was requested from the Diocese and Historic England.

The building work itself started last August when contractors stripped the tiles from the roof, adding a modern waterproof layer before re-laying work began. The original tiles had been attached with mortar, and so each tile needed a groove cut by the builders before it could be re-attached using a nail to secure it in place. ‘We managed to re-use around three quarters of the original tiles’ says Canon Goddard, ‘and the replacement tiles have been chosen to match the original tiles.’

By mid-December the work was largely complete, but the church was covered with dust and rubble while the seating was protected by tarpaulins.

With a Christmas concert by Linda Tolchard just two days away, there was a mammoth cleaning task to complete.

The total cost of the work needed was £223,000, a huge sum to raise. A large proportion of the money came from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Worcestershire and Dudley Historic Churches Trust, and the Allchurches Trust, but fundraising by local people was critical to completing the work.

The church continues to be a centre for music locally. New lightweight demountable staging allows for larger events, the church serves as a base for the English Symphony Orchestra and a wide range of musicians will appear here during 2016. In February there’s a concert by the Elgar Chorale, and a service is being planned to celebrate the completion of the restoration work.

The History of Christ Church Deigned to seat 700 people, the foundation stone at Christ Church was laid in 1874

by Lady Emily Foley. She was said to be unhappy at having to climb a ramp to reach it for the laying ceremony. The completed building was dedicated just over a year later in 1875 and contains stained glass from the eminent Victorian stained glass artist Charles Eamer Kempe as well as Clayton and Bell.

The church’s spire stands as a landmark in Great Malvern. It is approximately 180 feet high (55 metres) and ten years ago it underwent major repairs.

The gas lamp standing outside the church is now powered by electricity. It was recently restored after the original glass lamp was discovered in the church’s boiler room.

Quick Chick pea & spinach curry

Serves 4 Ready in 20 min

Ingredients • 2 large onions, chopped • 2 cloves garlic crushed • 1 red chilli crushed • ½ tsp ground turmeric • 1 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp ground coriander • 2 tsp garam masala • large pinch of salt • 1 tin of chopped tomatoes

A quick healthy supper for a cold evening.

1. Heat oil in a pan, sauté the onion and garlic in oil, add the chilli and spices and salt and cook for two minutes, stirring constantly.

2. Add the cooked chick peas, tomatoes, spinach and a little water if needed.

3. Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for at least 10 minutes.

By Kaspa Thompson The Japanese have a tradition of starting something new when they hit sixty years old.

It’s called kanreki. There is a special costume to celebrate the day, and a sense that you can have a fresh start in life. They ask themselves, ‘What have I done in my past sixty years that I can build upon, what do I want to let go of, and what new things can I start?’

he New Year celebrations have the same kind of energy: the wonderful chance to start something new, to be invigorated and to move into the next part of life with a fresh burst of energy. I get this sense in springtime as well; as the natural world starts to flourish I want to take part in that growing and blossoming.

We don’t have to wait for a special time to think in this way. Every time the sun comes up in the morning is an opportunity for a fresh start. Every moment of every day contains the possibility for trying something new.

Dr Morita Shoma lived at the turn of the last century in Japan. He was a psychotherapist and his therapy centred around an important insight: how we feel is created by what we do.

If we want to live happy and satisfied lives we should take part in positive activities.

If you want to improve your life – choose to do something new, and positive, today.

In December last year (why wait until the New Year?) I started jogging again, after a six month break. How fit and healthy we are has a direct influence on our happiness. Our bodies and minds are strongly connected to one another.

When I’m running I not only enjoy the individual runs, I also feel generally better in myself. A sedentary life leads to a slow sluggish mind and low feelings.

Be realistic: if you haven’t moved your body much since P.E. in school, start small and choose something you will enjoy.

I also started sketching over the Christmas break.

Some of my drawings are terrible, but that’s not the point. I’m enjoying the creative process, I’m enjoying seeing myself improve and I’m enjoying

learning a new skill. It takes me away from my computer screen and into a quiet restorative space.

Is there something creative you would like to try?

Put an ‘artists date’ in your diary: Pick something that you will enjoy and make space in your life for it. Go to the theatre, visit a gallery, or buy yourself some clay to play with.

Sometimes we will hit resistance when we try new things. All change takes work, sometimes.

Talk yourself through the resistance and keep going. Remind yourself what the rewards are; something good is waiting for you.

Get yourself a buddy: if you both start something new you can support each other when the going gets tough, and celebrate your successes together.

Join a group or a class: it’s much easier to get into the swing of something new if there is a structure like a weekly meeting to help you.

Start volunteering: you’ll learn new skills, it will take you out of your ordinary life and into new areas, and you’ll be giving something back to the community too, what could be better?

Make some time to think about what you can do to lead a more satisfying life, and then do it.

Topic of the month: The older shoulder Unfortunately the human shoulder joint is only designed to last about 40 years.

This is highlighted by the finding that, on ultrasound scan, 96% of 40 to 70 yearolds exhibit moderate to severe shoulder abnormalities even if they experience no symptoms. As the average human now lives to be 80 or more, there is clearly a potential epidemic of shoulder problems awaiting those who reach middle age.

A complex joint

Along with the knee, the shoulder is one of the most complicated joints in the body and many things can go wrong. The shoulder is the most flexible of all the joints mainly because it is not a proper ball and socket like the hip, instead having a flattened socket. The trade off for the flexibility is instability but this is dealt with in part by four muscles together known as the rotator cuff, which hold the ball part of the joint down and back in the correct position. However these muscles are very prone to injury and degenerate faster than adjacent muscles. This causes the head of the humerus to be pulled upwards and inwards where it grinds into the rudimentary socket causing accelerated wear, increased pain and loss of movement.

This clinic is privately run by David Jones DO. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.

Cascade effect

The fact that so many older people don’t feel much pain despite the degeneration is good news. However in my experience when an injury does arise the pain often quickly spreads into the arm, back, neck and chest, especially if untreated. It has been suggested that some of this cascade effect following injury may be caused by certain muscle groups reflexly switching off and other areas becoming tighter. This then leads to the development of so called myofascial trigger points in the muscle which refer pain to other areas.

Treatment

When treating shoulders I usually use soft tissue and joint manipulation as well as medical acupuncture applied not just to the shoulder but often to the arm, neck and chest muscles as well. I also encourage specific strengthening and stretching of the rotator cuff and other muscles and offer advice about prevention of recurrence. Occasionally severe cases may require a surgical opinion.

pancake race Tuesday 16th February 12.30pm until 2pm

he pancake race in Priory Park has become an annual fixture in Malvern, and raises thousands of pounds for charity.

Organised by the Malvern Rotary Club, it’s also a lot of fun to watch or take part in. Sandy Gibson is one of those involved, and tells us more.

We started the race in 2008 as a means of fundraising. Charities teams can donate all the money they raise to their own charity, whilst noncharity teams can donate half to their nominated charity with the rest going to our Rotary Club’s charity fund. This is used during the year for worthy local causes and for the End Polio Now campaign.

The race is organised by a team of six volunteers led by Brian Curtis. We each take up parts of the job and the whole Club is involved on the day itself. We usually attract about twenty teams of four people and fancy dress is welcomed.

There are prizes for the Best ‘Elite’ Team (average age under 50), the Best Veterans Team (average over 50), the Best Dressed Team and for the one which raises most for charity. Some teams return year after year. A team supporting Save the Children is usually there and have been prize winners in the past.

In 2014 we raised £3,450 for charity and last year the figure was £2,390. You are very welcome to come and watch, or if you’d like to enter a team then application forms are available if you ring (01684) 575879 - they are also available from the Malvern Rotary website, Malvern Tourist Information Centre or from our sponsors Waitrose and The Morgan Motor Company.

confusions & Hero's welcome Alan Ayckbourn’s 79th play and first major revival of Confusions on national tour to Malvern Theatres.

In its 60th anniversary year, the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, in association with Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, is embarking on a national tour with two productions written and directed by world-renowned playwright Alan Ayckbourn. Malvern Theatres welcomes the world premiere production of the author’s 79th play, Hero’s Welcome, and a major revival of the 1974 hit Confusions.

Ayckbourn’s latest play Hero’s Welcome recently had its world premiere in Scarborough.

Seventeen years ago, Murray fled the neighbourhood under somewhat of a cloud and certain local folk have long memories, not least Alice, the mayor, whom he left standing at the altar. Once the welcome flags have stopped waving and the town band has ceased playing, few of his friends seem particularly happy to see him back. Murray’s declared intention of staying put and settling down with his new bride threatens to stir up all sorts of old rivalries and resentments.

In Confusions, from a devoted and isolated mother to her unfaithful travelling salesman husband, through a solicitous waiter to wellheeled diners and an utterly shambolic garden fete, human frailty is laid bare as one hilarious situation after another unfolds. Each of the plays connects to the next through one of its characters until the final one is reached when four people sit alone on park benches. From high farce to poignant observation; the laughs, however dark, keep coming.
