4. Malvern Male Voice Choir The choir performs at a concert raising money for Cancer Research UK on Saturday 25th March at St Edmund’s Hall in Malvern. This is the twelfth year this popular event has taken place and over the years thousands of pounds has been raised for the charity. The choir has a wide repertoire of music from Bach to the Beatles and with around 30 members it should be a memorable evening.

The huge increase in people of all ages reporting feelings of anxiety or depression is taking the health services by storm. Last year 11.7 million working days were lost to anxiety and depression, according to the Health & Safety Executive. Even when help is available through the NHS there can be long waiting lists for a consultation. It is clear that too many people are suffering in silence.

Anxiety sufferers, however, should be aware that today there is a large number of private “talking therapy” practitioners who can be seen at short notice and who offer confidential and flexible treatments. Hypnotherapy, for example, brings a wide range of interventions to help people with their anxiety while at the same time making people feel relaxed and good about themselves.

Hypnotherapy is not a magic wand but it can be a surprisingly quick method for helping you see a way out of your problem and realising just how flexible is the human mind.

NEW CHEF AT THE COTTAGE IN THE WOOD The Cottage in the Wood and 1919 Restaurant has a new chef. Mark Redwood comes to the hotel from Gloucestershire, where he previously worked at The Old Passage, a well-known restaurant next to the River Severn.

PANCAKE RACE Malvern Rotary Club will hold its 10th annual Pancake Race on Tuesday 21st February.

MENCAP PATHWAY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Mencap has set up a new Day Activity Centre in Malvern Link, for people with learning and physical disabilities. This is open 5 days a week. Their aim is to provide meaningful leisure and learning opportunities for adults. These range from cooking to keep fit, karaoke to drama, or gardening to reviewing the local news. If you could offer several hours a week to help – supporting someone with a hobby, accompanying to the cinema or helping out with a Pathway day activity group, you will be very welcome. It would be preferable, but not essential to have worked with or have knowledge of people with learning disabilities. Time of the week would be to suit the volunteer.

feel better by helping others

hen people first come to a Buddhist service here at the temple, we often ask if they’d be happy to help wash up after our post-service cup of tea. This introduces them straight away to the culture of the group here, where we encourage everyone to muck in and help each other out.

We encourage people to be kind to each other because it is a good thing to be kind to each other, but there is also a happy side-effect to helping others. Helping others makes us feel good and brings us many other benefits.

We all know the feeling we get when we have been of use to someone. This weekend we organised a surprise birthday party for a friend and this took a fair bit of work. When we saw their shocked and happy face, it was all worth it – at the end of the day we were exhausted but we felt great. We can find pleasure from helping people out in smaller ways too – giving them directions when they look lost, or being courteous when we’re driving and slowing down to let them out of a junction.

Helping others also connects us to other people and to the broader community, and it stops us from feeling isolated. It can be a great way of getting to know people. It’s also a good way of learning about ourselves – both by paying attention to the person we’re helping, and by noticing our own reactions as we help. I have felt inspired recently by someone who is coping with a very difficult situation with great grace, and I also learnt something about setting boundaries when helping someone who wanted ‘endless help’.

How can we begin to practice helping others?

1. Smile and say thank you. Give a genuine smile to the woman at the check-out or the man you pass walking on the hills. If you really enjoy

your meal, ask your waiter to pass on your thanks to the chef. These small acts don’t take much time, but might change someone’s whole day.

2. Send out some love. Identify someone who needs some support at the moment, and spend five minutes sitting quietly and sending out love towards them. This is called ‘metta practice’ – who knows whether it has any effect on the person you’re holding in mind, but it’s good practice for us, and it can’t be doing them any harm!

3. Send a letter or give something away. If you’re wondering how an old friend is doing, write and ask them. Send your niece a card. Buy an extra pack of biscuits when you go shopping and give them to your friend or someone you feel grateful to.

4. Perform one random act of kindness a week.

If your neighbour mentions she’s having trouble keeping her weeds down, offer her an hour’s weeding or pay for someone to come in. Give five pounds to Charity. Send your mother-in-law some flowers.

5. Offer to volunteer. A variety of organisations who do great work use volunteers – we have regular volunteers here in the temple garden, or you could help a child with their reading, or pick up litter. See what opportunities are available.

andrew's printing shed Amazing things are created in garden sheds.

Andrew Judd’s shed is no exception. Infused with the smell of printing ink, it hosts a myriad of presses, drawers filled with metal typeset moulds, test pages of text and linocut prints, canisters of ink and ingots of alloy from which typesets are cast.

tanding in pride of place are two giant machines. The first is a printing press given to Andrew in 2009. ‘I was offered it by a couple from Shropshire’ he says, ‘along with the Ludlow Typograph Machine’.

The Ludlow Typograph uses a molton alloy to cast lines of text which are then used to print the final page. ‘I didn’t know anything about using it’ says Andrew, ‘but fortunately I found a man living in Hertfordshire who had worked for the company that made these.’

and bound, it’s a short collection of poems by Edward Thomas who wrote them while serving in the First World War. He saw them published under the pseudonym Edward Eastaway shortly before he was killed in the war, but only a hundred copies were ever produced. To mark the centenary of his death, Andrew has decided to print another 150 copies of ‘Six Poems by Edward Eastaway’. The print run is complete and the books are on sale at £10 per copy (plus £2 p&p). If you would like a copy, you can email andrewjudd59@aol.com

Technology like this was the mainstay of printing for almost two centuries until modern, digital techniques came into use in more recent times.

This kind of printing is a skill kept alive by a handful of people like Andrew, who publish small numbers of books which are then sold locally or at specialist book fairs around the country.

While we chat, the Typograph machine is whirring into action. After an alloy of tin, lead and antimony is heated in a crucible, the lid is closed and a form holding the letter moulds slides into place. After some heavy clunks, a line of words cast into a metal block falls into a tray, ready for use. The process takes only a matter of seconds.

These blocks of text are locked into a chase (a frame) and mounted into the press which whirrs into action. A series of rollers supply ink to the plate before it is firmly pressed onto a sheet of paper. A book is slowly taking shape!

Although this demonstration has taken only a few minutes, printing an entire book can a long time to complete. ‘This book’ says Andrew, picking up a copy, ‘took four weeks to print.’ Carefully printed

The group has just received a new press, housed at the church, and has several presses which can be used for a variety of printing methods including etching, silk screen and linocut. orchestra pro anima Michael Bochmann had a glittering career as a violinist while still a teenager. At the age of 19 he was a finalist and winner of the British prize of the Carl Flesch International Competition for violinists. He performed on the radio and appeared on television with Yehudi Menuhin, with whom he later toured internationally. Now he is embarking on a new musical enterprise.

In his twenties he founded the Bochmann Quartet and played in many different ensembles before taking on the role of leader at the English String (and later Symphony) Orchestra. There were many tours, recordings, as well as performances locally.

In recent years, Michael has devoted more time to public engagement in classical music and has been involved in several large-scale events.

His enthusiasm was sparked by a performance at Gloucester cathedral in which 150 young musicians came together to play the music of Vaughan Williams. The success of the event led to further performances in London, culminating in the Water City Festival, an annual event held at The Tower of London, which aims to the share the joy of music-making with every child in the UK.

Michael believes that live music is entering a new phase. ‘We are moving away from supersized concert halls as a lot of very successful artists prefer to play smaller venues’ he says.

‘I remember playing a huge concert hall in Montreal which could accommodate an audience of thousands. Smaller venues allow a direct connection with the public and the performance becomes about handing the music over to the audience.’

Fast forward a few years, and Michael is about to embark on a new musical enterprise. Orchestra Pro Anima is a string orchestra which will perform at Christ Church in Malvern as well as venues elsewhere.

Unfurl The Spring! with Orchestra Pro Anima, with the violinist George Ewart and Peter Adams on Cello, will perform at Christ Church on Avenue Road on Sunday March 19th at 3pm. Tickets cost £16/£12 with a student discount and are available from Malvern Tourist Information Centre on Church Street.

almond biscotti A perfect present for a loved one. Why not bake a batch for Valentine’s or Mother’s Day? 1. Preheat oven to Gas mark 4/180˚C. Place a sheet of baking parchment on a baking tray.

2. Place the ingredients in a bowl and mix until they come together.

3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth and shape into a flattish log shape.

Makes 12 Ready in 1 hour

Ingredients • 110g caster sugar • 110g plain flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 1 tbsp gram flour • 2-3 tbsp water • 55g roughly chopped almonds

4. Place on the baking tray and bake for 15 minutes.

5. Remove from oven and allow to cool for about 15 minutes.

6. Cut into thin slices (about 1cm thick) and lay back on the baking sheet.

7. Put them back in the oven and cook for a further ten minutes until crisp.

This local group of musicians meets to practise and perform recorder music, with an emphasis on pieces from the 16th to 18th centuries.

Malvern Festival Chorus is hosting a Come and Sing workshop in Great Malvern Priory with a bit of a ‘Feast’ theme. Everyone is welcome to join them at Great Malvern Priory on Saturday 11th February to bring some cheer to a dark February Saturday.

‘The clear sound of the recorder can be beautiful to listen to’ says Grenville Sheringham who has been with the group for many years. We welcome players of any ability’ continues Grenville. ‘If you have been playing by yourself for a while, this is a great opportunity to play with other instruments.

We choose our pieces based on the ability of the group. Players might only have played descant recorder, but might be thinking ‘I could play the tenor or treble recorder’ and start to branch out. We play garklein, sopranino, descant, treble, tenor and bass recorders.’

Topic of the month: Frozen Shoulder True frozen shoulder

True frozen shoulder is a strange and unpleasant problem which can develop suddenly. It has three phases: 1) The acute phase in which the main symptom is pain 2) The “freezing up” phase when most of the movement is lost and 3) The recovery phase in which the movement gradually returns. The whole process can last up to two years or more in severe cases. The cause is not fully understood but the capsule which surrounds the joint becomes thickened and tightens up. Its medical name is “adhesive capsulitis”. Treatment can be difficult. Relief of pain is the priority in the acute phase. Then mobilisation needs to be commenced as soon as possible in the later stages.

Other shoulder problems

Over the years many people have come into the clinic complaining of frozen shoulder but in fact have been found to be suffering from other shoulder problems.

The commonest of these is impingement syndrome in which the supraspinatus tendon becomes caught up

in the bony tunnel on the underside of the collar bone. This also makes raising the arm difficult but skilled examination can usually distinguish between the two problems.

Another common problem is rotator cuff tear in which the stabilising muscles of the shoulder become damaged. This is hugely common in anyone over 40. Shoulders are also prone to osteoarthritis and shoulder replacement surgery is now available in severe cases. Additionally “nerve entrapment” in the neck may also cause shoulder pain although this rarely leads to serious restriction of shoulder movement.

Diagnosis and treatment

Thorough case history and physical examination by an experienced osteopath will often be enough to form a diagnosis. This may need to be confirmed by soft tissue ultrasound or MRI scan. Medical treatment often involves analgesic and anti-inflammatory medication.

Hands on treatment and/or acupuncture plus specific exercises often help and more difficult cases may require steroid injection and/or surgery.

Peter Taylor-Gooby OBE is Professor of Social Policy at the University of Kent. His presentation addresses insecurity in a globalised world.

Dr Mark D. Flood is a financial economist from the United States, whose research focuses on financial data and risk analysis.

On the Sunday, the British theologian Professor Frances Young gives a talk, while Natalie Bennett, former leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, will give a political perspective.

Children

Professor Frank Close is particle physicist who, in 2013, was awarded the Michael Faraday Prize by the Royal Society of London for excellence in communicating science to UK audiences. In his presentation, he talks about Nothing.

There’s plenty of fun science taking place for children. Sessions are free but need to be booked in advance – they take place on Saturday 4th March at Holly Mount URC on Queens Drive in the heart of Great Malvern.

Marcus Du Sautoy is the Charles Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. He addresses the weekend on What We Cannot Know.

1660 Drury Lane. Charles II has cast off London’s drab, puritanical past with a love of all things loud, French and sexy. A young Nell Gwynn is selling oranges for sixpence in London’s burgeoning West End theatre scene unaware of who is in the audience one fateful night.

Jessica Swale’s warm-hearted, bawdy comedy tells the story of an unlikely heroine, who went from lowly orange seller to win the adoration of the public and the heart of the King. Starring Olivier Award nominated actress Laura PittPulford, Nell Gwynn is brought to the stage by English Touring Theatre.
