ith the majority of recent headlines dominated with Brexit, a change of Prime Minster, a controversial new American President and low interest rates, you would be forgiven for putting off some of your major financial decisions until the New Year.

In such times we often put off or even ignore some of our own more pressing issues which are a little closer to home. With returns on savings being virtually non-existent and a booming housing market, more and more people are turning to equity release for a whole host of reasons.

Those choosing equity release now can enjoy low borrowing rates and three levels of protection through a structured financial advice process regulated by the FCA, face-to-face legal advice and many product safeguards.

Independent advice Equity release products can be complicated and it is important one gets specific tailored advice from an independent specialist as everybody’s circumstances and needs differ. It is essential the advice you seek is independent and from the whole of the market, and of upmost importance, only from firms regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. As an extra precaution, companies that subscribe to ERC (Equity Release Council) can give that extra peace of mind. This is a self-regulating industry body set up by lenders and offers standards and ethical codes of conduct.

The Products Equity Release can take on many different forms with some plans involving the sale of part or all of the property, often referred to as Reversion Schemes, and plans that are very similar to a Rob Weale is a founding partner at Smith Weale Associates. Sometimes, after careful consideration, it is a straightforward decision that this type of solution does not sit happily with those concerned.

Alternative Options With your family and adviser, the alternatives must be considered, for example, do nothing, downsize, borrow from family members, arrange an interest only mortgage to name a few. It is important all angles be explored, only then can you make an informed decision.

Enjoy Local 1. barnards green christmas extravaganza This event takes place on Saturday 3rd December. Starting at 10.30am, children will be able to meet Father Christmas and enjoy lots of other entertainment including a magic show. The Play Bus will be along and popular children’s characters will be wandering around the Green. The event has been organised by the Barnards Green Traders with support from both the District and the Town Councils.

Money raised will be donated to Community Action Malvern & District which recently launched a new Helping Hands scheme.

2. christmas fete Malvern Outdoor Elements is holding a Christmas Fete with a difference. The outdoor centre in West Malvern is offering the chance to have a go on a zipwire, take part in some archery and try orienteering, before enjoying a mince pie.

There will also be carol singing and craft stalls to browse.

3. Carols for all Carols for All is a seasonal music event taking place at Great Malvern Priory between Christmas and New Year.

Hosted by Malvern Festival Chorus, it takes place at Great Malvern Priory on Wednesday 28th December at 3pm.

Everybody is welcome, and tickets cost £2 on the door.

A collection held at the event will raise money for The Bridge Training and Development charity.

4. carols with donkeys There’s a festive event in Barnards Green this December, as the Reverend Val Needham and Friends perform seasonal music, raising money for a charity helping rescue horses and donkeys. As well as carols and gospel music there will magic tricks and other entertainment. This is a family focussed event and there will even be the chance to meet some donkeys. The afternoon will raise money for Lucy’s Sanctuary for Holy Land Donkeys, a charity caring for donkeys and horses in Israel and the Palestinian territories.

The event is at The Bluebell Inn on the Guarlford Road between 1pm and 2pm on Saturday 17th December. www.lucysdonkeysanctuary.org

5. New Year Celebrations at the star inn The Star Inn on Cowleigh Road is holding a New Year’s Eve party to raise money for Community Action Malvern and District. The theme for the evening is Seventies and Eighties Fancy Dress and there will be music as well as a buffet of Chinese food. Tickets need to be purchased in advance from The Star and cost £18, with £5 from each ticket donated to Community Action.

The Star will also be holding Chinese New Year celebrations which this year fall on Sunday 29th January. There will be a buffet taking place at 12.30pm and 3.45pm and a lion dance performance at 2.30pm. The buffet costs £13 per person and everyone is welcome to come along and watch the lion dance outside the restaurant.

ROUTE TO THE HILLS Work is underway to install signs for Route to the Hills, a project which will celebrate the heritage of Great Malvern.

When complete, a number of plaques, signs and artwork will guide people from Great Malvern station, through town and onto the hills, highlighting places of interest along the way. Work to install the trail will take place over the next few months, with events to mark its completion next spring and summer. Among the many highlights of the new route will be the history of the water cure, geology and local connections with writers, musicians and artists.

LOCAL EYES MALVERN Local Eyes Malvern is a new group meeting for local people who are affected by sight loss.

It meets on the 1st and third Monday of each month from 2pm at The United Reformed Church Hall in Malvern Link. It’s a chance to meet new people and take part in fun activities. There will be a programme of guest speakers, information on equipment as well as social and leisure activities.

The group complements the popular existing branch of Sight Concern at Christ Church Hall, which meets on the 1st & 3rd Wednesday of each month.

READ & RIDE BOOKSHOP The Read and Ride Bookshop in Great Malvern is celebrating its fourth year in business. The shop on Platform Two at Great Malvern Station sells second-hand books and is run by Onside Advocacy, a charity supporting adults who are disadvantaged or vulnerable. ‘The shop is a great success’ says Cathy Jackson-Read from Onside Advocacy. ‘Staffed by volunteers, it provides a showcase for Onside’s work and an opportunity for people with learning difficulties to gain skills and experience in a real retail environment.”

The shop has a great selection of books all priced at £1.50 and is open from Monday to Friday between 10.30am and 4.30pm.

MALVERN COMMUNITY FOREST Did you know that the wood from Spindle trees was once used to create spindles for spinning wool? Or that Dogwood was used by butchers to make skewers known as ‘dogs’?

hese are just some of the facts being chatted about as volunteers gather for one of the regular Sunday morning working parties at Prospect Community Woodland, just off Pickersleigh Road. Although only a small parcel of land, this is home to a wide variety of native tree species, which in turn supports local wildlife.

‘We’ve seen foxes and cubs here’ says Craig Hughes, who is overseeing the careful management of the site. ‘The shrubs and undergrowth also support bird life, we’ve placed bird boxes in some of the trees which have been used this year.’

woodworking skills are practised and tree identification courses are run. Some members take part in Abundance, a scheme to pick local fruit (mostly apples) which would otherwise go unused in people’s gardens and in unused orchards. This season more than 200 bottles of juice have been produced and fruit has been donated to local community groups and given away.

Managed by Malvern Community Forest, part of the idea is to create somewhere for local people to visit.

Steps lead up to an open area with a fantastic view towards the hills. If you want to stop and admire the view there are benches, while foliage from native trees softens the edges of the site.

Today, Malvern Community Forest has around fifty members, many of whom are active in either the work parties or some of the group’s many social activities. They also manage Malvern Community Woodland which sits close to the Retail Park at Malvern Link. ‘A lot of the trees were planted in the last twenty or so years’ says Dave Munday, who oversees the conservation work there, ‘although there are pockets of ancient woodland as well.

Recently, we’ve been busy opening up footpaths through the wood, improving habitats for butterflies and we plan to build some footpath bridges to improve access further.’

As well as the working parties, there are mindfulness sessions in the woodland, green

All About...

ED DREWITT Ed Drewitt is a naturalist who has spent years studying peregrine falcons and has written a book exploring the lives of urban peregrines. In November Ed will give a talk at a meeting of the Malvern Group of Worcestershire Wildlife Trust.

For this particular talk I am focusing on a range of British birds of prey and revealing what they get up to throughout the year in terms of their migration. Throughout the year we might spot a sparrowhawk dashing through the garden in hot pursuit of a finch or sparrow, or notice a kestrel hovering by the motorway. However, many of these birds of prey, particularly in the winter may not be as local as we think. They could in fact be from the far north of Europe! And of course, peregrines, a bird that I have studied, will also be covered - I’ll be revealing where many of the colour-ringed birds I have been involved with have flown to.

Are peregrines a rare sight on the Malverns Hills?

Peregrines are an increasing sight in the Malverns and interestingly some of the peregrines that we colour-ring in the Bristol and west area move up to the Malvern Hills and into the West and East Midlands when they leave the areas where they hatched from. Under a special licence I work with a team of climbers from the British Mountaineering Council to visit peregrine nests. On the right leg we fit a metal ring with a unique number and on the left leg we fit a blue ring with two black letters. These help the birds to be spotted in the wild and allow us to follow where the birds go.

What advice do you have for people who want to see peregrines?

Towns and cities across the UK are brilliant places for seeing Peregrines - and they are very reliable once they find a church, building or cathedral that they like. The key is to keep looking up; the crow-size Peregrines have distinctive long, pointed wings and shallow wing beats. And when they spot some food they will drop out of the air like a bullet (up to 180 miles per hour) to an unsuspecting pigeon, duck or wading bird.

What will your talk be about?

How much time have you spent watching peregrine falcons?

I have been studying peregrines for the past 18 years. The most exciting part of their behaviour is that they hunt at night. Using the light from street lamps they spot birds migrating at night and catch them in a short quick chase. Little grebes, woodcock, water rail, teal and much more are caught in this way. They occasionally take bats too. I have had some lovely observations of peregrines too and remember a female peregrine swooping right past me in Bristol with a ‘whoosh’.

Within seconds she was on the other side of the Avon Gorge and had nailed an unsuspecting pigeon with such accuracy and ease.

Tell us about your book My book is called Urban Peregrines and brings together the biology and behaviour of the urban peregrine as well as our relationship with the bird and why it is attractive to a wide audience. It gives tips on seeing and studying peregrines. And of course it is peppered with lovely photographs by a range of local photographers capturing the different parts of the story that I tell.

Recipe

Apple, Celery & Walnut Salad Wash and cut the celery into roughly 5mm pieces, on the angle.

Core and cut, with their skins on, the apples into matchsticks.

Roughly chop and toast the walnuts in the oven at 180C for 10 minutes.

Add all the dressing ingredients into a bowl and mix thoroughly.

Toss the celery and apple together with the dressing, scatter with toasted walnuts and serve.

heart-Warming christmas The Malvern Singers invite you to their annual Christmas concert on 8th December, which promises to be a heart-warming celebration, raising money for a local charity.

The group’s Musical Director Edwina Ward and accompanist Ron Ward have chosen a programme of music to uplift and inspire and features Mid Winter by Bob Chilcott, No Small Wonder with words by Paul Wigmore and music

by Paul Edwards, Star Carol by John Rutter, Mary’s Boy Child by Jester Hairston arranged by Stan Bowsher and many others to celebrate this special time of the year. They are delighted to have guest artiste Alison Martin, a very talented local Flautist, joining them for the concert.

This year’s concert will support Heartstart Malvern, a charity whose aim is to provide free training in the Malvern area which could help to save a life. During a short training session they will teach you how to resuscitate someone who is not breathing and how to use an automated external defibrillator. They are also raising money to provide this equipment in the Malvern area.

cashew & Carrot roast Perfect for your Festive entertaining!

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/Gas 6, grease and line a loaf tin.

2. Place nuts and bread in a food processor and process until they are roughly ground.

3. Heat oil in a large saucepan and sauté onion until soft. Add the grated carrot and cook briefly.

4. Add the stock and herbs bring to the boil then remove from heat.

5. Add the nuts and breadcrumbs and mix well add soy sauce and season.

Serves 6 Ready in 45 mins

Ingredients • 1 medium onion, finely chopped • 1 large carrot, grated • 2 tbsp rapeseed oil • 225g cashew nuts • 100g wholemeal bread • 275ml vegetable stock • 2 tsp herbs • 1 tbsp soy sauce • salt and pepper to taste

All About...

sole mates Malvern Sole Mates is a friendly walking group for people who like to talk, walk and be together. Meeting regularly for walks around Malvern, it’s free to come along and you can just turn up. Jenny Brown tells us more.

When do you meet?

We head out for walks every Wednesday and Friday, summer and winter. It’s not just about the walking but also about talking and making friends. We have trained walk leaders and head off at a pace that suits the whole group.

Our Wednesday walk is usually one or two miles long, taking us around local landmarks like Peachfield Common. We aim to finish the walk somewhere where we can get a tea or coffee.

On Fridays we head further afield, catching the bus to Ledbury, Colwall or Wellington Heath for a longer walk before enjoying lunch in a local pub or cafe. Popular walks are The Worcester River walk with coffee at the cathedral on a Friday morning and Moat Pond, Sherrards Green on a Wednesday afternoon finishing at Morrisons.

Who comes along?

Numbers vary on each walk from just a few of us to more than twenty. Some people are referred to us by Community Health workers. Perhaps they’ve recently lost a partner, or are suffering from depression, and joining us gets them out into the fresh air, exercising and socialising.

Some people have had a stroke or have a disability. A son or daughter might call to say their dad is living on his own and they’d like to get him walking. You can’t force people to join us but many come once and stay because they really enjoy it! We move around the group as we walk to make sure that nobody is left by themselves.

When did Malvern Sole Mates start?

Sole Mates started around fifteen years ago and is part of Walking for Health, a national initiative run by The Ramblers and Macmillan Cancer Support. I joined five years ago after moving to Malvern, partly to meet new people and also to get out and enjoy the area. Some people who started with Sole Mates are now in their late eighties and still come to our Christmas meal. We

don’t charge anything to join or come along on a walk. All our walk leaders are volunteers who receive training in first aid and complete a Walk Leader’s course.

What’s coming up?

We have an annual Christmas get together which is always well attended, and in the meantime our Wednesday and Friday walks continue. Don’t be put off just because it’s winter! This can be one of the best times of year to get out and about – the fresh air, the changes in the season which are reflected in our lovely local countryside and the far reaching views. It’s a great way to meet new people. When I moved here I didn’t know anybody, I joined after seeing an advert in the library. Everyone made me so welcome and I’ve been a part of the group ever since.

a sense of wellbeing

f we examine our own lives we can see this unfolding time and time again.

If we encounter something in life that disturbs us, our sense of wellbeing takes a knock. We feel unbalanced, and if we respond to the world from this place of being unbalanced, or in more extreme circumstances, from anger or anxiety, we can end up throwing oil onto the fire, and making matters worse. Where does that leave us? With an even lower sense of well-being and less likely to make good choices in the future.

However, the deeper our sense of well-being is, the less likely we are to be knocked about by events like this. If we’re feeling well rested and happy, when something comes along that is complicated, or asks us to go outside our comfort zone, we are better placed to deal with it.

If we deal with it well, our sense of well-being increases, leaving us in a better position to deal with whatever comes next.

I used to believe that ‘good work’ was producing things, or preparing for events, or doing administration; practical tasks with clear outcomes that could be easily measured.

If I wasn’t working towards these goals, I felt like I wasn’t working, and I aimed to fill my working hours with this sort of practical task.

These days I try to leave more space around these practical tasks. I have learnt that being able to work from a place of feeling good, or to respond to unexpected events from a place of feeling good, is just as important, if not more so, than the number of things I can cross off my to-do list at the end of the day.

Now, when something tricky comes along, I’m much better placed to deal with it. Some things I respond to without thinking, my sense of

A sense of wellbeing and living a good life are intimately connected. The deeper our sense of wellbeing, the easier it is to make good choices for ourselves and others. The more good choices we make, the more our sense of wellbeing increases. wellbeing is enough that many things get dealt with without producing too much disturbance.

More difficult situations do still trouble me sometimes, but the extra space in my day means that I can cool off before responding, and make a good choice from a calmer place. This not only leaves me in a better place, but it means that the difficult situation is easily resolved, because I haven’t responded in a way that’s made things worse.

We can increase our wellbeing by giving ourselves space, and doing things that nourish us (spending time with good people; doing things we enjoy; looking after our bodies and minds) and also thinking clearly about the choices that we make.

If we reflect deeply on our own lives, we can see that when we make choices that are fuelled by greed or anger, or a sense of overprotectiveness, our sense of wellbeing decreases in the long term, even if, in the moment of acting, we feel some relief. However when we choose to act in ways that are good for us and others, our sense of wellbeing increases in the long-term.

Tending to both parts of this cycle leads to good results — both parts of the cycle feed each other — our sense of wellbeing increases and increases, and it becomes easier and easier to live a good life.

malvern soup The soup phenomenon is sweeping the world. It all began in Detroit where someone with a strong community spirit got people together to raise money for the local area.

A group meets, soup is eaten, people bring their own food, sometimes there is entertainment, but the focus is on the community projects who present their work and activities. Guests pay a £4 entry fee at the door and after hearing the presentations of each group, they vote on who should win the money. The winner receives the takings at the door plus any other money raised through donations or cake sales during the event.

The first Malvern Soup was held in September at Malvern Cube in Albert Road North. There was an excellent turn-out with people of all ages attending and a wide range of community projects presented. The rules of the event are that there can be no electronic presentations, so no slides, no technical support. It is old fashioned talking, standing up in front of the group and explaining

what the project is and what the promoter needs the funding for. The advantage for all participants is that even if a project doesn’t win, there is extra publicity for the cause and a general discussion of the merits of each ensues.

The next event is on 11th December, 3pm at Malvern Town Football Club in Langley Avenue.

There will be live music and plenty of soup. It’s an excellent family event in a venue which can easily accommodate large numbers in a pleasant caféstyle atmosphere.

Topic of the month: Cervicogenic headache Definition

Cervicogenic headache is defined as headache secondary to dysfunction of the neck. Other types of headache are often accompanied by neck pain e.g. migraine, but the pain is not truly coming from the neck in these cases. Complex nerve connections in the upper neck are thought to be responsible for the pain travelling upwards.

Who gets it?

Women are four times as likely to suffer cervicogenic headache as men. There is sometimes but not always a history of neck trauma. It’s also relatively common; possibly up to 20 % of long term headaches originate from the neck.

Presentation

The pain is more commonly on just one side of the head and can appear at the back of the head (occiput), the side of the head (temporal region), around the eye or even in the face. It can be constant or intermittent and is

often accompanied by restricted neck movement. The neck will be tender if pressed and doing this may trigger the headache.

Diagnosis

Most of the time the history and a thorough examination will be all that is required although more elaborate tests such as MRI scans may be needed to eliminate other possibilities.

Treatment

Drugs prescribed include anti-inflammatories, antidepressants, anti-convulsants and muscle relaxants.

These are not always effective or well tolerated though.

In severe cases surgical procedures are occasionally attempted but there are risks.

Many people prefer to try handson treatment including soft-tissue and spinal manipulation and/ or acupuncture techniques to improve neck function. It is these techniques that we specialise in at Orchard Lodge Clinic.
