ou’ll have heard me on this subject before, but it really is so important I thought I should write on the subject again, to make sure you’re aware of these important changes and what to do about them.

New and far-reaching pension changes have taken effect from April 2015 – the “most radical… in almost a century”, as the Chancellor put it.

They could transform the retirement prospects of millions of people, especially those who have wisely built up their pension savings over the years.

In a nutshell, from age 55 you’ll have total freedom over how you take money from your pension, you can even take the whole fund as cash. In addition, your pension needn’t end with you, you may be able to pass it on, in many cases tax free when you die.

What to do…

As a result, we’re seeing more and more people taking action already. Those approaching retirement are looking into what makes most sense for them. Those with some years to go are considering adding what they can to their pension, thus benefiting from the automatic boost of tax relief.

The flipside of all this freedom and flexibility is that as a saver you now face what may seem a maze of options – whether you’re retiring this year or in a few years’ time. How can you avoid unknowingly making ill-informed decisions which could backfire or miss the benefits of these new opportunities?

Seek advice If you have the slightest doubt, help is at hand.

the twits Roald Dahl created some truly revolting characters in his time, but few can compare with Mr and Mrs Twit! This popular story is brought to life at The Coach House in December by The Malvern Theatre Players.

T

he Twits are a revolting couple. Mr Twit is a foul, smelly old man and Mrs Twit is a mean, one – eyed old woman. They love to annoy one another with silly jokes and dirty tricks. However, their worst habit is being cruel to animals. So one day, the Muggle–Wump monkeys, who the Twits have captured and attempted to train as circus performers, and the Roly–Poly Bird team up and turn the hateful world of the Twits completely upside down!

David Wood’s faithful dramatisation of Roald Dahl’s story is a marvellous mix of comedy, slapstick, acrobatics and audience participation.

David has been informally dubbed ‘the national children’s dramatist’ and a number of his plays were written for and premiered at The Swan Theatre in Worcester where he was artistic director for a number of years.

Malvern Theatre Players have performed several of David Wood’s adaptations of his own and other authors’ books including The Gingerbread Man, The Owl and the Pussycat Went to See…, The

The Twits is the second production of Malvern Theatre Players 39th season. The Players have recently transferred their residency from Malvern Theatres to the Coach House Theatre and this will be the first Christmas production in their new home.

A strong cast of experienced Malvern Theatre Players members and newcomers, including a number of young people, will perform this well known play. Mr and Mrs Twit are played by Tim Cranmore and Marylin Birks with Jonathan Stephens as the Narrator. Kai Sellars and Janet Smith are Mr and Mrs Muggle-Wump and Sarah Jackson plays the Roly-Poly Bird. The play is directed by Chris Bassett assisted by Sue Lupton and Shelley Stewart with costume designs by Iska Lupton.

CIRLCE DANCE & harmony SINGING New Daytime Circle Dance and Harmony Singing groups are starting in West Malvern Village Hall in January. They are run by Sunnara Vivian who tells us more.

oth groups are very accessible for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy with the emphasis on the pleasure of taking part.

You can come to Circle Dance on your own or with a friend and simply join in. Each dance is taught. No experience of dance is needed, being in a circle and holding hands means you are supported, which is a great help for beginners.

Dancers come for many reasons including getting exercise, making friends and socialising. It’s some ‘me’ time away from the stresses of work and everyday life.

all taught by ear and include rounds and songs with glorious harmonies in two, three or four parts - we make an amazing sound together!

All voices and all levels of experience, or none are welcome. Our groups are not choirs. There are no auditions, we don’t give performances and no-one will ever be asked to sing on their own. It’s all about listening to each other and singing together that counts.

We sing a variety of songs from all over the world.

We do have our own song books to help us, but after a while most people find that learning by ear means they can put them down and simply sing.

There is a free ‘Taster’ session the first time at both of the new Harmony Singing and Circle Dance sessions.

Circle Dance draws on the rich and diverse traditional dances and music of many countries.

New dances are also created by the circle dancers to both traditional and contemporary music.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON EVENTS Christmas Lights Switch On events take place in Ledbury and in Malvern on Saturday 28th November.

all about teamwork When Sascha McDonald, the Publishing Editor of All About Magazines, started All About West of the Hills, she never thought that nearly seven years later her magazines would win the national ‘Community Magazine 2015’ award at the Independent Magazine Publishers Conference this October. But it did and she did, alongside two other awards – highly commended Inspirational Business Woman 2015 and Best Social Media Presence 2015 for our Facebook page. Here she tells her story.

C

asting my mind back to the end of 2008 I see myself and my computer, in a little office in our house, working really hard at the start-up of a new local magazine for the area west of the Malvern Hills. I had never done anything like that in my life and I remember living on adrenaline for months on end. It was the most scary, exciting and challenging time! There were lots of firsts; selling space to businesses, designing adverts, laying out and putting together a magazine, invoicing, chasing payments, distributing thousands of magazines… but some kind of deep drive got me through it and the very first magazine went off to print by the deadline I had set myself.

After that first edition, called ‘Colwall & Area and delivered by hand to 2,500 houses initially, the magazine went from strength to strength and very soon I called in the help of an accountant – Steve Ollis from Active Accountants, who is still with me, someone to keep the finance admin in order and Tina, our fantastic and dedicated sales person for Malvern. She helped me launch our second ‘All About Malvern’ magazine within the first year of starting the business, and is still working very hard behind the scenes to fill our magazines with local business and services.

With launching a community website (www. allaboutmalvernhills.com) in 2012 and a third magazine in Worcester in 2013 the group of hard workers behind the scene now includes Julie,

who does a lot of administration and finances, and Teresa, who takes care of the sales in Worcester. What a team! Without them All About Magazines would not be where we are now.

Winning these three awards has humbled me, has excited me and has made me proud and thankful. Of my team, including James, my husband, who writes most of the content of our magazines. Of my children, who sometimes have to be patient with a hard working mother, especially when it is close to deadline. Of our fantastic team of deliverers, including John from Mitchell Distribution in Worcester, who works so hard in all weathers to get the copies out to everyone. Of our loyal customers, many of whom stay with us year in year out. Of our printers, Warwick Printing, who print the highest quality magazines time and time again. Of our support in the background; Steve the accountant, Quay Systems for our magazine software, my business mentor Robbie Hazelhurst for always giving me a listening ear and sound advice, fellow publishers across the country. And last but not least, to you, for reading the magazines, using the magazines and keeping the magazines.

barnards green christmas extravaganza Saturday 5th December 2015 - From 10am until 2pm In the centre of Barnards Green

he Christmas Extravaganza in Barnards Green is always a popular event for families, and this year it promises more entertainment than ever before.

The fun begins at 10am when Father Christmas arrives, before he settles into his grotto to hear the Christmas present wishes from all of those visiting him. There will be a free present for each child that visits.

This year, there are two main entertainment areas which are undercover, so the fun will continue whatever the weather. Appearing during the day will be Dave the Wonder Dog, the magical puppet companion of Magic Russ. There will also be Animal Encounters and a Circus Skills workshop.

If that’s not enough, there’s a Double Decker Play Bus offering extra fun for children while one of

the Minions is joined by Mickey Mouse who will be walking around the centre of Barnards Green handing out balloons. A host of classic cars are being assembled in the area behind TP Travel to look at, while a limousine will be filled with balloons for the ‘Guess the Balloons in the Limo’ Competition. There will be an animal-inspired Word Quiz, activities include cupcake decorating and a Children’s Colouring Competition, with the best picture winning a family meal at the Bluebell Inn. Money raised during the day will be donated to the charity Alzheimer’s UK and will help buy equipment for the monthly Dementia Café which is run in Malvern. In the past seven years, the traders in Barnards Green have raised more than £11,000 for local charities and hope to push the total even higher this time around.

root vegetables with cranberries

Serves 4

A great way to cook vegetables.

The cranberries give a lovely jewelled effect.

• 500g selection of carrots, parsnips, sweet potato • 2 tbsp extra virgin rapeseed oil • 1 tbsp brown sugar • tsp ground nutmeg • tsp mixed spice • 50g cranberries fresh or dried • 75ml local cider or apple juice • water as needed • salt and black pepper

Perfect for your festive entertaining!

1. Peel and chop the vegetables. Steam or boil until part cooked. Drain.

2. Put the oil, sugar spices and cider into a pan. Mix well then add the vegetables.

Bring to the boil and simmer for about 15 minutes until cooked.

3. Add the cranberries towards the end of the cooking time.

the reality principle

By Kaspa Thompson Yesterday afternoon I was tired, and I was grumpy. I was upset with someone for not having behaved how I wanted them too, or how I thought I would have behaved in their situation.

I worked over the situation in my mind. I was justifying my upset feelings to myself, but of course this just kept the frustration alive.

watched the rain running down the window as I did the washing up after lunch. The view across the valley was obscured by a fine grey mist.

that had upset me, but I also saw his reasons for making those choices. I was also able to see the version of reality that I was trying to protect, and that it was simply a misplaced expectation.

Somehow I managed to catch sight of what I was doing: I was resisting reality. I couldn’t change what had happened, and every time I went over events in my mind I was getting more upset.

I was pitting what I wanted against what had actually taken place and, naturally, reality won out.

Once I had seen more of what was real I was able to sit down with my friend and talk over what had happened in a pretty relaxed way.

We create a huge amount of pain for ourselves by resisting reality. We’ll all have our own style of doing this, and different styles at different times.

Perhaps we distract ourselves by opening a bottle of wine; or reaching for another chocolate; or ordering a new pair of shoes, or that latest collectable online. Perhaps we’ll try to push reality away, getting upset with other people, or inanimate objects. Often anger is an attempt to create distance between us and something unsettling. Perhaps we’ll simply try to pretend that what we don’t like isn’t there, and become exhausted or even depressed as it takes all of our energy to hold reality at bay.

When I stood at the sink, as soon as I noticed what my mind had been doing my tiredness started to lift. I felt awake again. As I had started to accept reality the energy that I’d been putting into railing against it, or just ignoring it, was suddenly available for other uses.

Along with giving us some energy back, accepting what is means that we can then give ourselves options: the more we resist reality the less options we have.

With my hands in hot water, washing the dishes, I not only saw the choices my friend had made

One common thing that affects how well we are able to accept reality is a confusion between things that are inside our control and things that are outside our control. I couldn’t change what had happened, or my friend, but I could change my response. Many situations that we struggle with are like this, and thinking clearly about what is and isn’t in our control can help us move towards acceptance and creating options.

There’s a simple exercise I use sometimes to help with this. I create three columns in my journal, the first for elements within my control, the second for elements I can influence, and the third for things completely outside my control.

Then I fill in the blanks.

Anything that brings us closer to seeing what is really there is a good thing. The more clearly we can see, and accept what is in front of us, the more likely we are to be at ease with what is happening and to make a good response.

Topic of the month: Cycling and your neck The sporting success of Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins and Victoria Pendleton has given cycling in the UK a massive boost. People of all ages are getting back on bikes and enjoying the sport. This has spawned the amusing acronym “MAMIL” which for the uninitiated stands for “Middle Aged Man in Lycra”.

Dropped handlebars For many the appeal of the classic road bike far outweighs that johnny-come-lately sport of mountain biking. However the riding position with dropped handlebars is far from ideal from an anatomical point of view, especially in the more mature rider. On a long ride, the lumbar spine is held flexed for hours at a time, leading to increased compression of the lumbar discs. Conversely the neck is held in significant hyperextension which reduces the space available for the nerve roots as they exit the spine. With tyres at 120 psi and no suspension there is the added hazard of shock and vibration being transmitted through to the rider.

This clinic is privately run by David Jones DO. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.

The ageing neck

Most pro cyclists will retire aged 35 years or younger whereas recreational cyclists are often much older than this when they take it up. Even at 30 years of age the discs between the vertebrae may be beginning to dehydrate (spondylosis) and the facet joints will gradually become arthritic. With the boom in road cycling I have seen many cases of riders suffering neck and shoulder pain, often with pins and needles or numbness in the hands.

What can be done?

If you love cycling but have associated symptoms the good news is that you may not necessarily have to give up. Most manufacturers produce comfort orientated versions of their road bikes. The geometry of the frame is different to give a more upright riding position.

Additionally components can be changed to further enhance the effect. Stem risers are available and a shorter handlebar stem will bring the rider more upright too. The saddle is also on a slider which can be brought forward. Additionally some hands on treatment and/or acupuncture may be enough to free the troublesome joints. As a cyclist who has suffered with this problem myself, I am very sympathetic to fellow sufferers.

stanbrook abbey

Two centuries ago a group of nuns, fleeing persecution from postrevolutionary France, arrived in Worcestershire. For the next 170 years they made Stanbrook Abbey their home, and now their story is told in a new book by local historian Pamela Hurle.

tanbrook Abbey in Callow End is an impressive building. Designed by the eminent Victorian architect E.W. Pugin, until 2009 it was the home for the group of Benedictine Nuns who moved here from northern France in the 1830s.

‘I thought their story was worth telling’ says Pamela Hurle. ‘It was last written about in the 1950s and the story concentrated on one of the nuns, an extraordinarily talented woman called Dame Laurentia McLachlan. Dame Laurentia pioneered the revival of early Gregorian Chant and was friends with, among others, the playwright George Bernard Shaw who described her as an enclosed nun with an unenclosed mind.’

The nuns arrived in Callow End in the mid1830s thanks to a Roman Catholic priest in Little Malvern who helped in their search for a new home. ‘There was deep mistrust of catholics in England at that time’ says Pamela, ‘so the priest dressed himself in the clothes of a country gentleman and rode over to view the estate at Callow End. When the owner discovered he had sold his property to a community of nuns he must have been apoplectic!’

Despite the concerns of some, the nuns received support from Earl Beauchamp at Madresfield, who helped divert a footpath to give them more privacy. The building was ready for them to inhabit by 1838, but it took many more years of design and building work by Pugin and his successors before the building was complete.

For the next 170 years, the nuns stayed at Stanbrook. ‘They were an enclosed, contemplative order’ says Pamela. ‘They held

seven services in their chapel every day of the year, taking up at least five hours a day which was the main focus of their lives.’

In order to uncover the story of Stanbrook, Pamela made contact with the current members of the Stanbrook Community and received extensive help. ‘The Stanbrook archive is looked after by Sister Scholastica, who was very supportive. As an archivist, she retrieved documents from storage, sent me pictures and we had quite an exchange of emails and letters. ‘ By 2009, with their numbers down to around twenty, the community at Stanbrook finally left Callow End and moved into brand new accommodation in north-Yorkshire.

Today, the stunning neo-gothic building they left behind has been transformed into a luxury hotel, wedding and event centre. In the final paragraphs of the new book, Pamela sounds positive about the future, not only for this landmark building but also for the Stanbrook Community of nuns.

‘At last, money is being spent on the spectacular buildings. In fact, Stanbrook survives in two distinct ways: not only has the Stanbrook Catholic Community kept the Benedictine Rule alive in Yorkshire, but also, in Worcestershire, a now secular Stanbrook Abbey survives as a reminder of an astonishing period in architectural history.’ .
