Summer is a great time of year in and around Malvern – there is so much to do. During August we have music as well as the Mayor’s Bonanza in Priory Park. Lots of events are planned for the late August Bank Holiday, including Worcestershire Open Studios, when local artists throw open their doors.

If you’re looking for a challenge, there’s the Help for Heroes Challenge walk from one end of the hills to the other (see Page 24).

Towards the end of September, the Malvern Autumn Show returns and if you turn to Page 23 there’s a chance to win some tickets. Even if you prefer to do nothing, there might just be some inspiration for you on Page 20!

To transfer or not to transfer, that's the question

By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall eports suggest over 210,000 people will transfer their final salary pensions this year compared with some 80,000 in the tax year 2016/17. The big question is, should you join them and jump on this very complex band wagon?

The truthful answer is……maybe! The decision very much comes down to your own personal set of circumstances. A broad-brush answer of yes or no just doesn’t cut it, it needs careful consideration, looking at the pros and cons, taking into account numerous personal hopes, fears and requirements. Only then can the question begin to be answered.

Final Salary Pensions As the name suggests, these ‘gold plated’ schemes are linked to your salary and years in the scheme and have often been heavily subsidised by the employer to ensure they will pay the guaranteed income when you reach the stated retirement age, usually 60 or 65. They usually provide a spouses benefit of 50% should the member pre-decease their spouse, for the rest of their life. There are other lucrative benefits like a tax free lump sum at outset and indexation, however the key word with a final salary pension is ‘guarantee’, they provide a guaranteed income in retirement.

Why the transfer conundrum?

The reason there is such an increase in those transferring away from these very lucrative pension schemes is twofold. One reason is that the incomes they provide are linked to Gilt rates which in turn are influenced by the Bank of England’s interest rate, which is currently at a historic low of just 0.25%. This leads to substantial transfer cash values which can seem very tempting and have probably been further incentivised by the employer to tempt you to move away, thus removing the liability from their books.

The other reason, and a very important one, is pension freedom. This now allows for these funds, once transferred away, to be accessed earlier. You have the freedom to draw down income or lump sums to suit yourself, give tax free income to your spouse, and probably most important of all, allow you to leave the fund to your children, grandchildren or whomever else you elect, in a tax efficient manner.

The important factor to consider, and one which should be at the forefront of your mind is whether you are happy to lose the all-important income guarantees and take on the responsibility of investment returns and capital depletion but giving the freedoms mentioned above.

3. maize maze It’s time for some ‘Maize Maze Madness’! Situated between Malvern and Worcester, Broadfields Farm re-opened its maze, created in a field of maize, on 22nd July. The theme for the maze this year is Alice in Wonderland, giving plenty to explore for children young and old. If you tire of the maze there are further games to play in the farm’s courtyard area, while food and drink will be available.

4. autumn in malvern festival: poetry in music Poetry in Music is the theme for this year’s Autumn in Malvern Festival, which once again brings a range of music and artistic events to the town.

The first performance takes place on Sunday 24th September with a performance at Great Malvern Priory by the Sacconi String Quartet, including a performance of a new song cycle by the composer Alec Roth.

The festival has also commissioned a new sculpture which will be unveiled in Rosebank Gardens during the festival, which continues through October.

5. An open-air performance of The Secret Garden The performance by Heartbreak Productions takes place in Severn Stoke on Sunday 3rd September.

This classic children’s tale reveals all that is good about friendship and is suitable for children aged 6 and above. The event takes place in the beautiful setting of Severn Bank House in Severn Stoke, by kind permission of Mr. and Mrs. Daly. The gates open at 1.30pm before the performance commences at 2.30 pm. The audience is invited to bring a picnic, together with garden chairs or rugs. Ice creams and soft drinks will also be available. Organised by the Friends of St Denys, the afternoon will raise money towards improving facilities of this beautiful 800 year old church. Business News FUNDING FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY MEASURES Severn Wye, which offers free energy advice and grants, is pleased to announce new funding to help 200 businesses across Worcestershire to install energy efficiency measures. The Worcestershire Target 2020 programme gives free advice for any eligible small and medium sized business as well as grants of between £500 and £5000 towards the cost of energy saving measures. They’ve already helped The Smart Actuator Company in Malvern, where potential savings of more than £5,500 per year were identified. Severn Wye is now working to help Smart Act implement an action plan to help achieve these savings, and has provided a grant following the installation of a new condensing boiler, an innovative heat recovery system, and the installation of a new office area created by sectioning off part of the production area to create a well-insulated office space.

community NEWS MALVERN PRIORY’S MAGNIFICAT WINDOW

BANDS IN THE PARK Bands in the Park continues in Priory Park during August and September. There will performances on Sunday afternoons from 2.30pm which are free to watch. Among those performing will be Malvern Hills District Brass Band and the Sauce City Jazzmen, with the final performance taking place on Sunday 10th September by Worcestershire Youth Jazz Band.

Please note that on Sunday 13th August the park hosts the Mayor’s Bonanza.

The Friends of Malvern Priory hold their inaugural Heritage and Faith Lecture this September. Katherine Wells will give an illustrated talk on the Priory’s Magnificat Window. Given to the Priory by Henry VII between 1501 and 1502, the window depicts scenes from Mary’s Life. The Talk takes place on On Saturday 23rd September at 6.30 pm. DEMENTIA MATTERS CAFE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Alzheimer’s Society are seeking friendly Café Volunteers who have a good sense of humour, enjoy talking and listening to people. The café provides a place for people with dementia and their carers to meet and socialise and have some fun. Volunteers help set up, serve refreshments, chat to people and join in activities and discussions. The café meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month from Noon until 2pm at Barnard’s Green Cricket Club, North End Lane.

doing nothing Mid-summer. The days are imperceptibly shortening. The red-flame petals of the monbretia have unfurled and in our garden pond the tadpoles are being eaten by a newt. Goldfinches have started visiting our birdfeeder and after days of sunshine there is a night of rain and the garden is watered much more effectively than I could do with a hose or watering can.

So much of the natural world unfolds without us having to do very much at all: the sun comes up each morning, and sinks over the horizon at night; the moon waxes and wanes; the grass keeps growing, leaves and petals unfurl, fruits form and eventually fall to the ground where they are eaten.

Every now and again we need to do a little here and there to keep things ticking over: deadheading a rose, putting some more compost on the veg patch, pulling up a few weeds here and there.

We breathe without noticing most of the time, our heart beats without us thinking about it, our guts go on doing their thing.

nothing can already be helping. I relaxed into the moment. My mind quietened, those two parts of me stopped trying to get me to act and I caught the eye of a friend and smiled. They relaxed a little too. The situation around us settled down and the child cheered up.

On other days we’d have all gone around that cycle of trying to fix things and probably made things worse.

Introducing some stillness can be transformative.

How to practise doing nothing • Make regular time to be still: sit in the garden or in a chair by the window and watch the world go by

At the same time our default reactions to the world and other people are often born of selfprotectiveness. Human nature is mixed. We shy away from some things, are drawn towards others, and see what we would like to see instead of what’s there.

• Take real breaks: instead of checking your phone (or your usual go to distraction) do nothing at all for a moment or two

Doing nothing is often a wise choice. How much do we really need to add to what is already happening?

• Listen to the birds

Being still allows us to get close to what is happening. Being still allows us to tune into how things are already unfolding. Acting from stillness and from being close to what is happening allows us to act wisely, if we need to act at all.

Sometimes just being still is already helping.

One summer day I was out walking with a few friends and their families. One of the children with us was tired and grumpy and started acting out. Various adults got involved. Cajoling, telling off, promising rewards for good behaviour and so on. I could feel myself pulled in two different directions. Part of me wanted to just walk away, and part of me wanted to get involved myself.

And then I remembered that being still and doing

All About...

Malvern hills challenge Now in its eighth year, The Help for Heroes Malvern Hills Challenge takes place on Saturday 9th September.

Participants follow an end-to-end route from the southern end of the Hills into Great Malvern. Tim Kidwell who is one of the organisers tells us more.

So what’s involved?

There are two options for the challenge. You can walk the whole length of the hills from the Bromsberrow Estate to Rosebank Gardens which is 15 kilometres. There’s a shorter route starting at the Malvern Hills Hotel next to the British Camp, also finishing at Rosebank Gardens.

The day starts at the car park opposite Malvern Splash Leisure Complex. We bus people to the start before they walk back to town. The event continues to grow. In 2015 we had 248 entrants and raised £3,000.Last year 422 people helped raise £8,500 and this year our aim is for 500 entrants who will help raise £10,000. All of the money raised is donated to Help for Heroes.

Who takes part?

All sorts of people! The oldest has been 92 years old. Many families enter and we’ve had babies carried with parents. Some people run the route in as little as 2 and a half hours, but most people walk. Malvern Joggers enter a team and there are teams from local organisations including companies, air cadets and local scouts. Dogs are welcome and this year we’ll be awarding rosettes to each dog which finishes.

Every human entrant gets a t-shirt and goody bag as well as a medal and certificate at the end.

These will be presented by the Mayor of Malvern at the finish in Rosebank Gardens, where there will be music from the band of the Malvern Boys’ Brigade. Food and drink will also be available.

Although many local people take part, others travel from across the country to attend, keen to help support Help For Heroes.

Is it a good walk?

The big feedback from last year is that ‘it was harder than anticipated!’ We describe it as a challenge, not a stroll in the park. The first

half is harder - people aren’t expecting it to be so demanding. If the weather is poor it’s even harder. The route is marked with signs, participants receive a route description and there are marshals at road crossing points. We have first aid cover on hand and take the safety of participants very seriously.

Why should people take part?

There’s a great sense of achievement from walking the length of the hills. It is truly fantastic scenery as well as a chance to help a worthy cause. Our organised and guided event means everything is taken care of, leaving you to enjoy the day.

We don’t ask for sponsorship, just an entry fee of £17 for adults and £10 for children. The cost is £10/£7 for the shorter challenge and there is a lower rate for team entrants. If you wish, you are welcome to download a sponsorship form from the website and collect more for the charity. We are very grateful to our sponsors, both corporate and individual, who also help us reach our fundraising target.

The “Slipped Disc”. Is your back at risk?

Essentially the discs are the shock absorbers of the back. They are like spongy pads between the vertebrae cushioning the bones from one another. Like many things they are superb until they go wrong.

Exploding the myth

Before all else it is important to realise that discs do not actually slip. They prolapse, herniate, degenerate, sequestrate and do all manner of other weird and wonderful things, but they do not slip. They are too well tethered above and below to the adjacent vertebrae for this to happen.

What are the symptoms of a disc problem?

Back pain, often with leg pain (sciatica), loss of mobility, difficulty sitting and driving, pain on coughing or straining, even a distorted posture are all potential symptoms of disc trouble. Unfortunately, once injured, discs are very slow to recover largely due to having a very poor blood supply. Most of their nutrition is from passive absorption from the surrounding tissues during rest. This is why adequate rest is often important for recovery. (The passive fluid absorption is also why people are slightly taller in the morning than the evening.)

What causes it and who is at risk?

It isn’t always a single injury that gives rise to disc problems. Discs will often gradually break down. The obvious risk factors are history of compressive trauma (such as heavy parachute landing), prolonged heavy lifting or being very overweight. Too much extreme exercise and conversely, too little exercise both increase the risk. Genetic factors play a hugely significant part too. Twin studies have shown that even with wildly differing lifestyles, identical twins will often develop disc problems simultaneously.

Smoking is also surprisingly bad for discs. Microscopic damage to the smokers’ blood vessels leads to reduced nutrition to the discs. In summary, disc problems should not be looked at in isolation. They are really more of a general lifestyle issue.

Interesting trivia.

Even time lords can suffer prolapsed discs. In 2008 Dr Who star David Tennant suffered a disc injury so severe that it required surgery. The damage was apparently bad enough to be beyond the scope of his legendary sonic screwdriver!

beekeepers The Malvern and Upton Beekeepers is an active group with a membership ranging from beginners to those for whom beekeeping has been a lifetime’s hobby. As part of the Worcestershire Beekeeping Association, they offer training, talks, outings and much more. Steve Carrott who is an experienced beekeeper and past group chairman tells us more.

Firstly, when did you join and why?

I joined the group in 1973 after hearing about his bees from a friend and spending time with him as he looked through them and carried out routine management. I was fascinated by what I saw and by the social cohesion of these wonderful insects.

The prospect of honey was also an incentive.

What is so enjoyable about beekeeping?

There are many attractions from watching bees at work and monitoring their development to enjoying the end product, particularly on winter mornings. To see a new young queen begin to lay eggs is a special thrill, handling swarms is an enjoyment, especially those easy to access. The friendly fellowship of other beekeepers is also very pleasing.

Is it difficult to get involved?

There are different levels of involvement. We all have a natural curiosity of the workings of nature and are mostly aware of the vital role bees play, together with the reliance we have on them.

Associate Membership of our group is open to anyone who would like to discover some of their secrets.

We hold meetings, provide a detailed study course in the Springtime and weekly practical sessions through the Summer where members can see the workings of a hive and handle bees themselves, under appropriate supervision. For those who wish to go on and have their own bees there is full membership where we give further information, advice, support and importantly third party insurance through a national scheme.

We are affiliated to the British Beekeepers Association which supplies members with a monthly “Beekeepers’ News”.

What else does the association do?

We hold an informative Annual Honey Show which is open to the public and is an opportunity for friendly competiton by beekeepers, who display the various products of beekeeping and other associated items of interest.

We also fulfil a community role by attending and taking away unwanted swarms which can naturally cause some anxiety.

Honey bees continue to fascinate us as they have done down the centuries and on request we may be able to provide a speaker for other interest groups.

worcestershire open studios Saturday 26 - Monday 28 August Discover a wide range of art and craft created locally when artists open their studios, homes and shared spaces for three days over the August bank holiday weekend.

Now in its third year, Worcestershire Open Studios provides a unique opportunity to venture into otherwise unseen creative spaces and talk directly to artists about their inspiration and creative processes.

Several artists around Malvern will be taking part, including Kamala Todd, who together with Jadu Sheridan, will be exhibiting paintings with inspiration including spirituality, different cultures and nature. Lyttelton Framing Gallery will also be taking part on Newton Road, demonstrating the many ways in which artwork can be displayed.

Helping both men and women deal with the trauma of a relationship that has irretrievably broken down.

By Malvern Branch Co-ordinator: Gill Owen I got involved with Divorce Recovery Workshop (DRW) 6 years ago when a friend who had been on the course found it so inspirational she wanted to set up a local branch in Malvern, which is the only branch in Worcestershire.

The workshops are run by experienced volunteers who have all been through the breakdown of a long term relationship and attended the workshops. Although my own divorce was a long time ago, I had to attend the workshops before becoming a facilitator.

I was amazed to discover just how many emotions I had buried. Once I had completed the workshop I knew I had come to terms with my past and could let it go. When you go through a breakup you don’t always realise how much grief, resentment and anger you hold on to or how emotionally and physically exhausting it can be.

How can Divorce Recovery Workshop help?

The breakdown of a long term relationship is a form of bereavement; yet unlike the death of a partner, you are often expected to carry on as normal. Whilst friends and family can be supportive, they don’t always understand how you feel and even your best friend will eventually have had enough of you going over and over what has happened!

Anyone who has been through the heartache of an irretrievable breakup is welcome at DRW, even if you are going through the divorce or if it was years ago. DRW will help

you cope with the many different emotions: shock, disbelief, rejection, anger, bitterness and guilt. You will gain a better understanding of what you are going through and be offered strategies to help you cope.

What actually happens at a workshop?

The course consists of six sessions covering: • Is this really happening to me?

• Coping with your 'Ex' • Assuming new responsibilities • Letting go and forgiveness • Family matters • Thinking about new relationships Participants watch a DVD on each topic and then divide into small groups with 2 facilitators per group. Everything said in the group is strictly confidential and no one is pressured to talk if they don’t want to.

When is the next one taking place?

The next DRW course will run on 3 Saturdays, fortnightly, on 14th and 28th October and 11th November 2017: 2 sessions per day with lunch in between.

Is there a charge for the Workshop and where does it take place?

DRW is a non-profit making registered charity but to cover our running costs we ask participants to pay £60 for the entire course.

The venue is in Churchdown Road, Malvern and there is a free car park.

malvern special families This year local charity Malvern Special Families celebrates 30 years of supporting local families. The charity was set up in Malvern in the 1980s by a group of local parents to help support families who had children with disabilities and now offers support to 175 families in Malvern and Worcester.

R

uth Pole was one of the first parents to be supported by Malvern Special Families and now helps fundraise locally for the charity. ‘Malvern Special Families made a massive difference to our family life when our son was young’ she says, ‘and we are glad to have this opportunity to support other families in similar circumstances.’

Malvern Special Families provides clubs and play schemes for children and young people with disabilities aged between 5 and 19, in ‘out of school’ hours in Malvern and in Worcester. The play schemes enable children and young people to have fun, socialise and develop new skills and confidence, whilst providing a short break for the whole family.

Malvern Special Families Chairperson Helen Attree is encouraging the local community to get involved. ‘Our vision is for every child and young person to have access to excellent social opportunities within their local community. We are proud to be celebrating 30 years of supporting local families, providing safe and engaging social opportunities for children and young people with disabilities. We would like to invite everyone in the local community to help celebrate our 30th year by coming along to a fundraiser or by hosting your own tea party or event.’

Malvern Special Families is marking the charity’s 30th year with a number of local events. The celebrations were kick-started at an open gardens weekend in West Malvern in July. Recipe

Tomato & Chestnut rolls Fun to make your own rolls. Makes a nice change from sandwiches for a picnic.

1. Place all the ingredients into a food processor and process until the mixture comes together.

2. Shape into sausages. This amount will make about 6. Line a tray with baking parchment and place the sausages on it. Chill in the fridge.

3. Preheat the oven to 200°C/Gas 6 4. Roll out the pastry to a rectangle 60 x 20cm Trim the edges to neaten. Cut into six even rectangles.

5. Place a sausage across the top of each pastry rectangle. Roll the pastry to enclose the filling.

Brush the pastry edges with water to seal.

6. Place the sausage rolls on trays lined with parchment. Bake for 30 minutes or until goldenbrown and cooked through.

jigsaw JIGSAW, also known as The Worcestershire Mental Health Relative and Carer Support Group, exists to give support to those who look after others with mental illness. Susan Nichols is secretary to the group and tells us more.

What does JIGSAW do?

The group members aim to improve the resilience, emotional strength and wellbeing for carers of people with mental illness in Worcestershire. We do this through peer support and by sharing our knowledge and understanding of mental health issues. It is important for relatives and carers to feel free to express their feelings in a safe and supportive environment without the fear of being judged. More recently we have been successful in gaining funding and we have been able to run an eight week course in Mindfulness and a workshop on Borderline Personality Disorder.

What happens at meetings?

We hire a room in Malvern and we meet once a month in the evening, meaning that relatives and

carers who work can still access valuable support and advice. The meetings are free of charge and so are the tea, coffee and biscuits. Most months we have guest speakers giving information on a variety of mental health related issues and about the support services available in the community for carers. There are also open meetings where we chat and discuss plans for the future.

Longstanding members provide friendship, mutual understanding and emotional support to new members who are often feeling desperate, helpless and isolated. These experienced members are able to signpost relatives and carers helping them to navigate their way through the ever changing mental health system in order to access the most appropriate services to meet their needs and those they care for.

Direct from a highly celebrated extended season in London’s West End, Bill Kenwright’s production of Alan Ayckbourn’s farcical tale of matrimonial mishaps, How the Other Half Loves is coming to Malvern Theatres.

As Bob and Fiona clumsily try to cover up their affair, their spouses’ intervention only adds to the confusion. William and Mary Featherstone become stuck in the middle, falsely accused of adultery and with no idea as to how they’ve become involved. The plot culminates in two disastrous dinner parties on successive nights, shown at the same time, after which the futures of all three couples seem in jeopardy…

The star cast includes leading stage and TV actor ROBERT DAWS, best known for the hit series’ The Royal, Outside Edge and Roger Roger, opposite CAROLINE LANGRISHE (Lovejoy, Holby City, Judge John Deed).

CHARLIE BROOKS, much-loved for her portrayal of EastEnders’ Janine Butcher with LEON OCKENDEN, (Coronation Street). Completing the couples are MATTHEW COTTLE who reprises his critically acclaimed West End role alongside SARA CROWE whose West End credits include Ayckbourn’s Absurd Person Singular and The Constant Wife, but is perhaps best known for her role in the popular film Four Weddings and a Funeral.
