eldom do I allow my mind to wander back to the financial crisis of 2008 as I find the whole saga far too traumatic. Worst of all, very few saw it coming, yet the ‘experts’ have been blind-sided once again.

Fortunately the unfolding result of Brexit isn’t likely to cause anywhere near the same amount of turmoil. The world is a different place, however, we must proceed with caution as this will take years to sort out and we must all prepare for the choppy conditions ahead.

Lessons were certainly learned back in those times, not least how to handle volatility and these same rules apply today. The key word here is diversification. Maybe the pound has dropped in value, maybe UK-biased companies will struggle until trade agreements are negotiated and interest rates are reversed, but a portfolio should never be based in one geographical region any more than it should be invested in any one single asset class. When certain areas of our economy suffer, other areas benefit; when one country struggles, another benefits and so forth.

It is worth reflecting that there is no change immediately as a result of the vote. Indeed it is widely anticipated that it will be at least two years before any UK exit takes place. There have been a number of sensible calls by major business organisations like the CBI and TheCityUK to emphasise business confidence and avoid kneejerk reactions.

It is important that the need to focus on planning for the implications of ‘Brexit’ does not crowd out other actions you are going to take such as taking retirement benefits or starting to plan for events such as long term care, mitigation of IHT or indeed starting to save. As the Governor of

the Bank of England said recently, ‘the question is not whether the UK will adjust but rather how quickly and how well’.

Uncertainty is likely to continue over the coming weeks and months, however the UK Government’s decision to set up a unit to oversee the exit should start to clarify the broad outlines and begin to provide some much needed signposts.

The advice is keep calm, keep invested but make sure diversification is applied to your entire investment holding. I make no apology for repeating myself from previous articles; the key rules and measures to check against your own investments remain and if in doubt, seek qualified help. In March I laid out diversification rules and their importance.

Frankly, no matter what the impending crisis is, we go from one to the next. The American presidential election beckons and diversification has to be the standard, not the exception.

Enjoy Local 1. FUSED-GLASS EXHIBITION The work of renowned fused-glass artist Jo Downs is exhibited in Malvern from 6th August. The exhibition, entitled ‘Shoals to Shore’, will include wall installations, bowls and vases at iapetus Gallery on Bellevue Terrace. ‘We’ve been selling Jo Down’s stunning work for many years’ says Chris Marks from iapetus. ‘Many people will have fallen for Jo’s work during their holidays in Cornwall and they’ll be delighted to see her latest works without such a long drive!’

2. alternative bands in the park Alternative Bands in the Park is a new series of free, outdoor concerts in Malvern aimed at new audiences.

On Saturdays throughout August, there will performances from bands alternating between Priory Park and Victoria Park.

Running between 2.30pm and 4.30pm, the events are free.

Malvern Rocks this year takes place between Friday 5th and Sunday 7th August.

It’s the fifth year for the music festival in which bands play at free events in venues around Malvern. Money raised through collections, donations and the sale of merchandise is donated to charity, and to date the event has raised more than £10,000.

4. suzuki summer school concert

26 - 29 August

Every year, students of flute and recorder come to Malvern for a summer school, and give a popular concert at the end of their stay.

The Brazilian theme for this year’s Suzuki Summer School means a party atmosphere which includes Carnival of Venice variations and plenty of baroque dances. The concert takes place on Saturday 6th August at 7.30pm in Christ Church on Avenue Road.

Entry is free but a collection afterwards will go towards church funds. There will also be refreshments after the concert.

5. uk electric car show The UK Electric Car Show comes to Priory Park and Malvern Theatres on Sunday 4th September. There will be a wide range of vehicles on display including cars and motorbikes. There will be expert advice on hand as you browse the latest models.

Among those due to attend the day are the actor and television presenter Robert Llewellyn, Professor David Bailey from Aston Business School and Simon Crowfoot from Ecotricity. All major electric manufacturers will be there including Tesla, Nissan, Renault, Mitsubishi and several more.

community NEWS WALKING FOR CHARITY Over ten days in September, John Raine will be walking the length and breadth of the Malvern Hills District to raise money for local mental health charities.

John, who is Chairman of the District Council has nominated local mental health charities including Link Nurseries in Powick and Positive Thoughts which meets in Malvern.

‘I shall be completing a long distance walk of 120 miles through all the local wards and districts of the Malvern Hills District Council’ says John, ‘and meeting as many people along the way as possible. I might even stop and play some church organs along the way!’ says John, who plays the organ for services at St James’ church in West Malvern.

Together with his wife Susan, John has completed several long distance routes including the Offa’s Dyke Path, but is looking forward to discovering new parts of the local area.

25TH ANNIVERSARY 1ST LEIGH GUIDES The 1st Leigh Guides celebrate their 25th anniversary this year.

To kick off the celebrations, they attended a special day where 4,000 girls and leaders took over West Midlands Safari Park. Over the summer months they complete hikes to the local brook and on the Hills, go camping (both locally and further afield) and enjoy other outdoor activities including the occasional international trip. The outdoor activities continue during the winter evenings with cooking over campfires, candle games and night hikes.

The group meets weekly at the Scout Hut in Leigh Sinton and takes in girls from the surrounding area. The Guides would welcome new members aged 10-14, aged 14+ for the Senior Section, and adults to help the leaders of both Sections.

LUNCH BOX IN THE PRIORY MALVERN HEARTSTART A newly formed group – Malvern Heartstart is being set up over the next few months. The aim of the group is to increase the number of people surviving a cardiac arrest in the community, by teaching people simple resuscitation skills, including using a defibrillator.

The group is urgently seeking a new volunteer to take on the role of Secretary who will attend Committee Meetings, send out agendas, take the minutes of meetings and email them to all Committee Members.

Some of this work will be done from home.

broad bean & cumin pate Make the most of local broad beans with this fresh pate. Great as a starter or perfect for a picnic or packed lunch.

1. Cook the beans until tender, and then refresh in cold water.

2. Toast the cumin seeds in a dry frying pan on the hob. This should take just a couple of minutes so watch them carefully.

3. Combine all the ingredients in a food processor and blend. The texture should be quite coarse.

Serves 4 Ready in 15 mins

Ingredients • 300g broad beans • 1 clove garlic, crushed • 1 tsp cumin seeds • 1 tbsp extra virgin rapeseed oil • juice of ½ lemon • salt and freshly ground pepper

All About...

greater malvern show On 10th September a new event comes to Malvern. The Greater Malvern Show is being organised by the Monksfield Allotment Association to promote its work and raise money for Link Nurseries Horticultural Centre in Powick. Sue Woodward is one of the show’s organisers and tells us more.

What’s the Show about?

We’re holding the show at the Lyttelton Rooms and in the Priory Grounds in the heart of Great Malvern on Saturday 10th September. Starting at 1.30pm there will be all sorts of crafts and goods stalls, children’s attractions including face painting and even morris dancing!

There will be a café serving all sorts of delights donated by local companies and there will also be a range of freshly baked cakes to enjoy with your cuppa.

The local community and businesses have rallied around to support this event. For example, our raffle already has more than forty prizes donated which is incredible.

On top of all these delights, we have a range of competitions to enter, so if you are particularly proud of the veg you grow, the cakes you bake, the wine you make or the photographs you take then please take part. Competition entries will be available to view on the day and the show is opened by the new Mayor, Cynthia Palmer.

Tell us more about the competition entries?

There are six different categories: Vegetables, Produce, Photography, Flowers, Fruit, Beverages. Within these categories are several sub-categories, so for example under Vegetables we have competitions for Three Potatoes (One Variety), One Marrow (Heaviest) and the Longest Runner Bean.

There are some entries in the competition categories specifically for children under 11 years old, and for those between 11 and 14 years old.

Additionally, some of the alcoholic beverage categories are specifically for adults.

The competition is open to everyone. Entry Forms can be picked up at Malvern Tourist

Information Centre, The Splash, Malvern Library and Wilkinson’s as well as on our Facebook page (search for The Greater Malvern Show). Entry costs £1 for adults and only 50 pence for under 14s.

Has it been lots of work to organise?

Yes, but once we had the idea and plan set, then when we were provided with a central venue by a very supportive Lyttelton Well, everything began to fall into place.

We have had an incredible response from our local businesses as well as Malvern Town Council, Malvern District Council, Worcestershire County Council and the University of Worcester.

This was made even easier by the Show Committee which is made up of some very passionate and creative volunteers from Monksfield Allotment Association. We can only thank all the local businesses who have supported our efforts.

Topic of the month: Buttock Pain The buttocks are an area of the body containing extremely strong muscles. The largest of these is the Gluteus Maximus which is in fact the biggest muscle in the body. Its action is to extend the hip.

Compared to other animals these muscles in humans are particularly well developed to hold us upright so that we can stand and walk on two legs. The upper end of the hamstring muscles are also found deep in the buttock.

Local injury

Buttock muscles are used in activities such as climbing stairs, standing up, jumping and running. Like all muscles they are prone to sprains and tears. The explosive nature of sprinting often leads to muscle injury in this region.

Secondary to back problems

Spinal problems in the lumbar region very frequently refer pain to the buttock. Disc and facet joint problems may give vague pain here, sometimes in the absence of back pain itself. In prolonged cases the muscles become hardened and tender to the touch. Additionally the sciatic nerve

which also originates from the lumbar spine passes deep in the buttock so when this gets inflamed or irritated it will also cause buttock pain.

Other causes

Although an arthritic hip usually causes groin and thigh pain, it is often accompanied by buttock pain. Rarer causes include rheumatological conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis, pelvic ligament strains, shingles and occasionally other more serious illnesses. Interestingly those that keep a large wallet in their back pocket often get buttock pain after driving due to compression of the sciatic nerve. It’s clearly one of the hidden hazards of affluence!

Treatment

Initially accurate diagnosis is vital. In acute muscle injury, ice and rest may be required. Tightened muscles often respond to hands-on soft tissue treatment and stretching. Treatment may need to be directed at the spine itself if the back is the cause.

Malvern Hills Challenge The Malvern Hills Challenge is a fundraising walk across the Hills to raise money for Help for Heroes. Taking place on September 17th this year, there’s a short as well as a longer route to sign up for. Tim Kidwell is the Challenge Organiser and tells us more.

How many years has it been going, and has it developed in that time?

The first Challenge took place in 2011, we had a break for 2 years and the event was re-energised last year, with the current committee building on the original scheme and looking to the Malvern Hills Conservators to authorise a permanent ‘Heroes Trail’ along the length of the Hills.

Who takes part and what do participants tell you?

The 2015 Challenge saw 248 entrants from all over the country, coming from as far afield as Bedford, Colchester and Portsmouth as individuals and teams. However, the bulk of those participating were locals from Worcestershire and Herefordshire. Supporting volunteers came from across the Two Counties from Help for Heroes, St John’s Ambulance as well as Army Cadets and local schools. Local businesses were hugely generous in their contributions; providing sponsorship, raffle prizes and stands at the finish in Rosebank Gardens. The Mayor presented medals.

And who makes it happen?

I am the Help for Heroes Malvern Hills Challenge organiser, but I am more than ably supported by a committee of locals: Gordon Waddell is the Operations Manager, Janet Smith covers sponsorship and fundraising, and my daughter

I had been on retreat, a regular fixture of my summer. The group there had spent ten days watching coal-tits and swallows, flitting from the house to the barn, to the walnut tree; practicing Buddhism together; attending talks by our teacher; moaning about the mosquitoes and deer flies; and deeply listening to each other’s stories. It was that deep listening which brought the group into harmony, and allowed us to be at ease with ourselves and each other.

Deep listening to people is part of my life now: it’s part of my work both as a therapist and a priest, and, I hope, happens in my personal relationships too. However it wasn’t something that I always knew how to do.

Often when we are listening we are not really paying attention to what the other person is saying, but doing a whole host of other things instead. We might just be listening out for the something that relates to us, so that we can say ‘me too’, or share our own story – cutting into the conversation regardless. We might have already made up our mind about what’s been spoken about, and then just hear what agrees with what we already think. Sometimes people will say to me, “I followed your advice and did so and so”, and I think “I never suggested anything of the sort”. We hear what we expect to hear.

If our minds are rigid, or full of our own ideas, how can we expect to learn anything new?

Once, during the Meji era of Japan, a professor of Buddhism went to visit Nan-in, a great Zen master. They greeted each other, sat down, and Nan-in served tea in the elaborate Japanese way.

deep listening A few days ago I drove home from my teacher’s old farmhouse in the centre of France. Twelve hours of travelling through sleepy rural villages, on motorways cutting through huge golden wheat fields, before the ferry back to Dover, and the feelings in the UK around Brexit. with his own ideas. Nan-in poured tea into the professor’s cup, and kept pouring. The cup filled, and he kept pouring. The tea spilled over the rim.

“What are you doing?” the professor asked, “It’s full up – no more will go in.”

“The cup is just like you” Nan-in replied, “how do you expect to learn anything when you are so full of your own ideas?”

If we are the person being heard, having someone deeply listen to us brings a sense of being understood, a sense of deep connection, and the space we are given allows us to work things for out for ourselves.

If we are the person deeply listening, we are able to come closer to what is really true, move towards a state of being at ease with difference, and work towards ways of living together that are good for everyone.

Over the past few weeks, with conversations around the E.U. referendum, I have seen high feelings and failures to listen to each other. I have seen friendships strained, and arguments in real life and online.

At times like this, when we are feeling stirred up, or around others who are stirred up, it is even

more important to engage in deep listening. Who is this person in front of me, really? What are their hopes? What insecurities lie underneath their strong feelings? It is a cliché to say ‘walk a mile in someone else’s shoes’ but how often do we really do this?

open studios Open Studios is back again this August bank holiday weekend. Over four days, from Friday 26th to Monday 29th August, the public is invited into artists’ studios, homes and shared spaces at 45 different locations across Worcestershire including many in and around Malvern. diverse range of work will be on show including painting, printmaking, glasswork, photography, pottery, jewellery and textiles. Visitors will have a chance to talk to artists about the inspiration behind their creations and watch some of them at work. Entry to all venues is free.

autumn in malvern festival Now in its 27th Year, the Autumn in Malvern Festival continues to bring world-class performers, art and discussion to the town during September and October.

This year, the brilliant young violinist Fenella Humphreys joins the chamber choir Aldwyn Voices, to present a programme of choral music and works for solo violin. Fenella performs internationally as a soloist and a number of eminent composers have written music especially for her to perform.

For her appearance in Malvern she will play Elagie, commissioned by the festival from the Scottish composer Rory Boyle. It is performed on 30th October in Great Malvern Priory.

Among the talks taking place is Light in the Darkness: The Malvern Conference 1941.

During the dark days of World War Two, eminent members of the clergy met in Malvern together with T.S. Eliot and Dorothy L. Sayers. Here, they discussed their vision for a post-war society based on social justice and he unification of Europe as a cooperative commonwealth.

Professor Christopher Baker presents his talk in the Great Hall at Malvern College on Friday 21st October at 7.30pm, entry is free.

Before that, the European Union Chamber Orchestra opens the festival at Great Malvern Priory on Saturday 17th September, when they play music by Bach, Faure, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Walton and Bartok. Another internationallyrenowned performer, the pianist Emma Abbate, will appear with The Tippet String Quartet as they play music by Dvorak and Benjamin Britten at Malvern College on Saturday 22nd October.

As in previous years, the festival marks The Big Draw, and on the morning of Saturday 15th October, free professional tuition is on offer at an event being held at South Worcestershire College on Albert Road North in Malvern.

All About...

co-dependents anonymous Co-Dependents Anonymous (CoDA) is a set of informal self-help groups made up of men and women with a common interest in working through the problems that co-dependency has caused in their lives. Meeting regularly in Malvern, one of the group who doesn’t wish to be named tells us more.

How did CoDA come into being?

Co-Dependents Anonymous, to give it its full name, is a worldwide fellowship of men and women whose common purpose is to develop and maintain healthy relationships with others and ourselves. CoDependents have difficulty with this - often due to painful trauma from childhood which taught us to behave or react in certain ways which were essential for coping and survival then, but are now no longer helpful. This may include being attracted to or having our own addictions or compulsive behaviours, difficulty with communication trust or intimacy, control or abandonment issues, impulsiveness, anger, anxiety and so on.

There are many manifestations of co-dependency - obvious and not so obvious - the checklist on the website is helpful, but may leave you thinking that everyone is co-dependent to some degree! Indeed, this is true. For instance, mothers are caretakers of their children and need to demonstrate some controlling behaviours at times, but if one behaved that way towards another adult all of the time it would be considered dysfunctional. If you think you may be co-dependent after visiting the website, come along to a meeting.

What happens at meetings?

Firstly, arrive a little early if you would like a cup of tea! You can also ask any questions before we start and chat to other members as they arrive.

Once the meeting starts there will be some readings, introductions and guidelines for sharing. The sharing itself is not compulsory - you can just listen, especially if it is your first time - there is no pressure. We speak about our thoughts and feelings - about current issues or past experiences. The group listens but we do not comment or react in any way when someone else is sharing - questions may be asked after the meeting - although quite often we find that our questions have already been answered by simply

listening to someone else share, or even during our own share. This is one way that we learn to find the answers ourselves and not rely on the opinions of others - a very co-dependent trait!

CoDA is an anonymous fellowship - we use first names only at meetings and operate a policy of ‘Who you see here, what is said here, when you leave here, let it stay here’. This fosters an atmosphere of trust and safety, which is important for recovery.

Can anybody come along?

Yes! The only requirement is a desire for healthier relationships. No matter how traumatic your past or despairing your present may seem, the hope of recovery is available to everyone.

There is no charge, but we are self-supporting, so we ask you to donate what you can afford and no records are kept so no one will chase you about coming to meetings, though there are contact numbers available for information and support between meetings.

The Malvern meeting of Co-Dependents Anonymous is held every Tuesday evening from 6pm until 7.15pm at the Amida Mandala Buddhist Temple, 34 Worcester Rd in Malvern (WR14 4AA).
