At Last, The Shackles Are Released

By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall The Budget earlier this year brought good news for savers and investors, coupled with the biggest shake up of pensions for decades. As a result we are faced with many new options for retirement income, some of which I would like to outline here.

By far the biggest shock in the budget, albeit a positive one, is the relaxation of rules around taking your pension income. You will be free to spend your hard earned and saved cash as you see fit, whether it will mean encashing the whole fund, drawing an income at a level to suit you, or seeking out an appropriate annuity. Of course there is a sting in the tail, any withdrawals will be subject to tax at your marginal rate, a penalty of up to 45% in some cases, so never has it been more important to seek specialist independent advice.

Never has Pension Saving been more attractive When you consider the tax relief you receive when paying into your pension, and couple that with the relaxed rules that will apply when the fund is called upon to provide an income and/ or lump sum, there is now no excuse for not saving into this most effective, efficient and highly lucrative tax wrapper. Believe me when I say, I have never been a lover of personal pension plans but all my reasons for seeking an alternative method are now defunct, this is by far the best way to save for later life.

With greater freedom comes greater responsibility Whilst the headline is great, never has there been more importance placed on ensuring you receive independent financial advice in regard your pensions and investments. With so many choices, so many pitfalls and dangers, expensive mistakes are easy to make. You need to receive the right advice at the right time and capitalise

on changes that have been introduced to put you in control, but also to ensure you shoulder the responsibility.

New rules for smaller pensions: You are now able to cash-in small pension pots worth up to £10,000, a rise in the threshold from a pitiful £2,000. The number of small pots that can be taken as lump sums will also be increased from two to three.

Drawdown changes: Up until April 2015 pension savings are more accessible with the capped drawdown limits increasing to allow savers to access 150% of what they could have received with an equivalent annuity. This is up from 120%. These rules are an interim measure until the full change takes place.

Relaxation of flexible drawdown rules: Wealthier retirees are not bound by the same rules when it comes to accessing their pension fund and do not have to stick to the capped drawdown limits. Currently to qualify you need to demonstrate a secure pension income of £20,000 a year. This has now been reduced to £12,000.

Death taxes on pensions to be reduced: (subject to approval) Once you have started taking an income from a drawdown plan any remaining funds when you die are currently taxed at a punitive 55%. George Osborne confirmed that would be reduced and is more likely to be in line with Inheritance tax although this is still to be confirmed.

Malvern Town Football Club Little more than a year ago, Chris Pinder never dreamed he might be running a football club. Today he’s busy supervising refurbishment work at the ground of Malvern Town Football Club, ahead of the new season. As the club’s Managing Director, he’s hoping a new era is about to begin.

‘I’ve played football since I was seven or eight, but I had no background or experience other than playing’ says Chris. ‘When I first read the club was on the brink of closure I came and looked, and thought actually, there’s so much potential here.’

Chris moved to Malvern around six years ago and runs an HD video streaming technology business here. As soon as the idea formed in his head to potentially take over the club, he approached his friend and former football teammate Ted Grizzell, who previously worked as an Academy Coach at West Bromwich Albion and in community coaching in Worcestershire. ‘I didn’t want to form a new company to take over the club without him having ownership as well’ says Chris. ‘His contribution is as much as mine.’

Chris has a three point plan for Malvern Town to succeed – firstly, to make sure the sports side of the club is running at its best, with good coaching in place. Secondly, to make sure the club’s finances remain healthy, and thirdly to improve the physical infrastructure from the club’s buildings to its pitch, which has just been reseeded with grass specially formulated to be tough and fast growing. ‘It needs constant mowing by Rocket Ron the groundsman!’ laughs Chris.

Around the club, both volunteers and local companies are busy painting, refurbishing and re-wiring the buildings. ‘I was putting a new roof on the changing rooms last week with the help of some of the players’ says Chris. ‘It’s a new start

here. Anybody disenchanted with football at the top flight should come down here and enjoy our matches’.

‘In order to save the club we brokered a deal with a supportive Malvern Hills District Council who purchased the ground and leased it back to the club’ continues Chris. ‘This is on the understanding that in return, an investment would be made by us and other sponsors to refurbish and renew the Stadium.’

The Club has registered as a not-for-profit Community Interest Company, this means that its assets and its profits must be used for the benefit of the community. ‘People weren’t sure of our motives’ says Chris, ‘so setting it up as a Community Interest Company demonstrates we’re not actually profiting from our investment or involvement.’

So why take it on, was it the challenge of the business? ‘Probably yes’ says Chris, ‘That whole process of turning something around with potential that was on its last legs and swiftly regenerating it definitely appealed to me. I wanted to test my skills. I thought the whole thing would be enjoyable, and it is. It’s equally stressful, but I get a lot of satisfaction just from looking around here, sitting on this new deck we’ve built and seeing painting work going on and the new pitch. I’m excited about what we can achieve here.’

With the team going into a new season of the West Midlands Regional League, Chris exudes nothing but optimism as to what they might achieve. ‘Over the years the team has punched above its weight’ he says, ‘and they’ve been promoted into higher leagues.’ After a little bit of checking on his iPhone, Chris calculates the club is only five promotions away from the Conference

or six away from League Two. While that would take a superhuman effort from everybody involved, Chris would dearly love to see large crowds at the ground on Langland Avenue once again.

‘All the old supporters regularly tell me stories of thousands of people watching Malvern play Worcester City’ he says. ‘It would be great to get that back, even a couple of hundred people in a ground like this makes a difference to the team on the pitch. If we could win every game at home because of strong support, we’ve got a good chance of getting up the league.’

Malvern Town will also compete in the FA Vase, in the first round they are drawn at home to Walsall Wood on Saturday 6th September. As well as the First Team, the club has a Ladies team as well as Under-18 and Under-21 sides. As part of the strategy to getting people back to watch games, season tickets are being offered at £40 per half season, or at a concessionary rate of £30, which allows admission to all home games.

‘It’s a new start down here’ says Chris, gazing out across the pitch, ‘there’s a new atmosphere and we want to welcome everyone.’

St Richard’s Hospice Write a Will Month in September Writing a Will is something many people keep putting off, always thinking there will be time later to do it.

But there are lots of important reasons to make your Will and the sooner it is done, the sooner you can relax in the knowledge that everything is in order.

Why it is important to make a Will: • If you die without a Will, there are certain rules which dictate how the money, property or possessions should be allocated. This may not be the way that you would have wished your money and possessions to be distributed.

All About...

Autumn in Malvern Festival For twenty five years, the Autumn in Malvern Festival has brought music, exhibitions and talks to the town during September and October. To mark its quarter century, some very special guests will be making an appearance this year.

The beginning of the Great War a century ago will be reflected in a number of performances and events. The Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy will be joined by violinist Bartosz Woroch and pianist Sam Armstrong for a unique performance of poetry, prose and music reflecting The Great War. The performance, in the Great Hall at Malvern College, takes place on Friday 17th October.

Dr Jean Moorcroft Wilson, the biographer of the war poet Siegried Sassoon, will be giving a talk about his life on Sunday 5th October, while a concert by Aldwyn Voices makes local connections with Sassoon’s work, with choral music by Byrd, Tomkins, Parry, Elgar and Walton.

(21st September at Great Malvern Priory) The premiere of a new piece of music will feature at a performance by The Fine Arts Brass Ensemble, who are well known for their highly polished and entertaining programmes. They will perform a new work by the composer Roxanna Panufnik who is a long standing patron of the festival. The programme also includes Bach, Glinka, Prokofiev and Nyman on Saturday 18th October at Malvern College.

The artist Dame Laura Knight has many local connections, but until recently several of her paintings were ‘lost’ to public view until they were rediscovered during research for an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. Rosie Broadley, who curated the exhibition, will be giving a talk at Colwall Village Hall on Saturday 25th October.

Jamie Walton

Elgar’s Cello Concerto will be performed at this year’s festival by soloist Jamie Walton, one of the rising stars of the classical world. He has appeared on concert stages throughout the world, and on September 10th is joined by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales for a concert at the new University of Worcester Arena. The programme includes works by Vaughan Williams and Dvorak and is a rare opportunity to see major classical performers appear locally in such an impressive setting.

In ‘Behind the Lines’ there will be readings of poetry and prose, written by men and women, young and old, about their experience of the First World War. It is presented by Gabriel Woolf and Linda Hart at Malvern Theatres Cinema on Sunday 26th October.

There are many exhibitions taking place around town, including contemporary art, history and sketches made for the Royal Ballet’s production of Enigma Variations. And if none of that appeals, there will be an empty plinth in Rosebank Gardens where the public are encouraged to pose for photographs, with a prize for the best entry.

Topic of the month: Imaging In musculo-skeletal medicine it is often vital to take a look inside the body to assess the cause of the symptoms. There are a number of ways of doing this.

X-ray This is the oldest form of imaging. Rontgen discovered X-rays in 1895 and first used them to take an X-ray of his wife’s hand.

Upon seeing the picture of her bones she exclaimed “I have seen my death!” Despite being almost 120 years old this technology is still widely used today. It is particularly useful in diagnosing fractures, arthritis, bony tumours and if taken standing up, spinal instability. However it involves exposing the patient to potentially dangerous ionizing radiation hence its use is limited by strict guidelines. A lumbar spine X-ray for example gives equivalent to approximately seven months background radiation. A variation on X-ray is called fluoroscopy. It uses a fluorescent screen and image intensifier to take moving X-rays which can show abnormal spinal movements which may be causing back pain.

CT scan This stands for Computed Tomography and uses X-rays combined with computer technology to produce pictures

of slices through the body. The radiation exposure is higher than X-ray so this technique is usually only used in hospitals, for urgent problems such as blood clots, aneurisms and cancers.

Diagnostic ultrasound scan This is most useful in the assessment of soft tissue injuries. Not to be confused with therapeutic ultrasound which can be used as a treatment. Ultrasound often picks up muscle and tendon damage which may not be obvious on MRI. MRI scan This stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging and is becoming the imaging of choice in many circumstances.

Clever use of magnetic fields and radio waves does not expose the patient to ionizing radiation and produces startlingly good pictures of soft tissue structures as well as bones. Excellent for diagnosing prolapsed intervertebral discs, it also helps eliminate the possibility of underlying disease from the investigation. In practice I often send people for private MRI if I feel there is clinical justification. Cost has dropped over the years with a single area scan now costing £195.

Tour of Britain cycle race comes to Malvern Wednesday 10th September

After a 10.30am start in Worcester city centre, The Tour of Britain travels through Rushwick and Leigh Sinton before arriving in Malvern.

The riders come through the Link and after taking in Barnards Green travel on to Church Street and the centre of Great Malvern.

‘The ‘King of the Mountains’ section through Malvern town centre and climbing up the hills will be one of the highlights of the entire stage’ says Simon Smith from Malvern Hills District Council.

‘As well as the race itself, there will be cyclingthemed entertainment and activities in Great Malvern. While the road is closed there will also be a separate hill climb event run by Velo Club Sevale and other cycling activities delivered by Malvern Cycle Sport.’

After heading up Church Street the riders climb over the Wyche Cutting and on to Little Malvern before descending to Upton upon Severn, onward to Pershore and Evesham before riding through Broadway where it leaves the county.

It then moves onto the West Country before heading across southern England, to finish in London on Sunday 14th September.

WI Centenary Baton Relay On the same day as the Tour of Britain's visit, Malvern also welcomes the Women's Institute Centenary Baton Relay.

The baton is travelling the length and breadth of England and Wales to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the WI next year. It comes into Worcestershire at the British Camp before travelling by bike to Belle Vue Island – it continues on foot through Priory Park to Great Malvern station before heading to Upton upon Severn, from where it continues its journey around the country before its eventual arrival in London. A New Lease of Life The Edinburgh Sports Dome at Malvern St James Girls’ School is a highly distinctive and important building, listed by English Heritage for its elegant design. Constructed by inflating a giant concretecovered balloon, the sports hall is beginning a new lease of life, as Olivia Kimberley has been finding out.

When it was built, The Dome was part of an architectural revolution, not least because of its looks; the futurist building appears as if it was designed for the space age. Perhaps more amazingly, the main part of its construction was completed in a single day. Based on an Italian design, huge springs were first placed across a membrane that was filled with concrete and then had a PVC sheet pulled across. This was filled with air that inflated into the round, eye catching spectacle we see today.

Such was the importance of the building that its construction was widely reported in both the mainstream and specialist press, including a six page spread in Concrete Magazine, which described it as ‘an architect’s adventure’. Today, the building has listed status from English Heritage, due to its rare method of construction which is unique in this country.

The Edinburgh Dome, to use its proper title, was officially opened by the Duke of Edinburgh in May 1978. At 36 meters across and 11 meters high, the building was originally white, but after rainwater began seeping in, it was covered in copper cladding which gives it the distinctive green colour we see today.

For many years The Dome served as a sports hall for the school, but became redundant after the opening of a brand new fitness centre on Barnards Green Road. However, The Dome reopened earlier this year after a major refurbishment and now, for the first time, is available for use by the public.

‘It’s super to see the way it has come back to life, it was mothballed for quite some time and it’s lovely that we’ve breathed new life into it’ says Patricia Woodhouse, Headmistress at Malvern St James Girls’ School. At one point, the building’s future had been in doubt, but that elicited a response from former pupils. ‘A number of our old girls wrote to us with fond memories of The

Dome’ says Patricia. ‘People are happy that it’s been invested in and has a future.’

The school has invested money to bring the building up to modern standards. A powerful echo on the inside of the building has been dampened by using rectangular soundproofing around the interior walls, while facilities have been refurbished including the building’s three Badminton courts and two Squash courts.

Regular fitness classes take place in the building which is also available to hire for other functions.

‘It’s in a lovely setting, a beautiful location’ continues Patricia Woodhouse, ‘we have extensive sports facilities at the school but this allows us to add more space for our girls as well as the public. We are very happy we’ve got The Dome!’

taking care in a

busy world As August changes into September we start to feel the first traces of autumn in the air. The nights draw in and the days slowly get cooler.

Trees turn from bright summer greens into reds and yellows until the sides of the roads are lined with dried fallen leaves.

By Kaspa Thompson At the same time that the natural world is drawing in on itself and growth is slowing there is a sudden burst of energy in other spheres of life. School is about to begin, new uniforms and stationery need to be bought. Even those of us out of academic life feel the impulse to start something new or reinvigorate our working life, hearing the echo from childhood of our own first days at school. At the same time we begin to anticipate Christmas, complaining about the first adverts on television, wondering if we have to invite the whole family around for lunch on December the 25th and if our pockets are deep enough for everything on our loved one’s wish lists.

I sometimes feel there is a tension between these two impulses: on the one hand the quietening down and withdrawing of the natural world, which often seems to trigger some deep hibernation instinct in people, and on the other hand the excitement and pressure of new beginnings and the build-up to the holiday season.

Even in springtime when the days are lengthening and the whole world seems bursting with life, new starts can be difficult.

They can bring us closer to our learning edges: intellectually as we learn new skills and emotionally as we are taken to (and sometimes beyond) the edge of our comfort zones.

How can we take care of ourselves in these situations? How can we make sure that we do not become overstretched and burnt-out, for ourselves and for other’s sake?

We need to pay attention to ourselves and to others. We need to look out for the clues that we are becoming too tired, or too challenged.

This kind of noticing is difficult in the midst of the business of new projects and of the frenzied world. The more we are caught up in reacting moment to moment, the harder it is to see ourselves and the situation we are in clearly. We thrash around like someone thrown into a pool of water, stirring up silt, muddying what was clear and forgetting that we can stay afloat more easily by lying back and relaxing than by splashing around making great waves.

It is important to make some space in our lives to be still, to allow ourselves to relax, and to begin to soften the tension in our mind and bodies.

When we have found a moment of stillness or relative quiet we can then ask ourselves, “How am I doing? What’s happening in my life right now? Can I make any changes to make life easier, or better, or do I just need to sit and enjoy this moment of peace?”

Making these quiet spaces is especially important as we go into busy times. It may feel selfish to take time for ourselves when the world is asking for so much of us, but these moments in which we can begin to relax and to pay close attention to ourselves and our lives will put us in a much better to position to take care of others, as much as they help us feel better in ourselves.

1. Peel and grate the root ginger, put the flesh and juice in a shallow dish.

Add the other marinade ingredients and combine.

2. Peel the onions and cut into quarters. Cut the peppers and sweet potato into chunky squares. Cut the courgette into thick slices.

3. Coat the vegetables in the marinade and leave to rest for at least 30 minutes.

4. Thread the vegetable chunks onto metal skewers. Place under a hot grill, or barbecue, until golden brown.

News from the Hills

Autumn Jazz Weekend Friday 19th to Sunday 21st September After the success of the Easter Jazz Weekend earlier this year, another weekend of live jazz around the town centre is planned for this September.

It features a programme of gigs with local and regional groups, playing modern and contemporary jazz. All events are free to the public at several different venues.

So far, the bands who are confirmed to play include the Malvern Big Band, which plays an eclectic mix of music from the Ellington/Basie era up to the present day. The band has the standard line of five saxes and eight brass with rhythm section. They will be playing on Belle Vue Island at 2.30pm on Saturday 20th September or at Olivers if the weather doesn’t allow for playing outdoors.

The Groove Front, Malvern’s own hard-bop quintet, will be performing at The Great Malvern Hotel on Friday 19th September. The band play a mix of jazz and latin standards, plus a wide range of classics from the Bluenote era by the likes of

Malvern Theatres Tomorrow Malvern Theatres Tomorrow is an ambitious fundraising programme which needs to raise £1 million to transform the theatre’s facilities. The theatre’s Chief Executive Nic Lloyd tells us more.

Can you give us more details of the work you want to carry out?

We would like to open up the front of the building with large glass windows. We will create a new café and restaurant area, giving both theatregoers and passersby a relaxing space to meet. We want to refurbish the cinema and create a larger education space that is accessible to everybody from the age of zero to a hundred!

We want to create an entertainment suite and we want to replace essential technical equipment and reseat our auditoria. All of this will help to maintain the position of Malvern Theatres as one of this country’s best performance venues.

Where will the money come from?

It’s a complicated jigsaw; we have applications for funding in with the local authority and The Arts Council, but we also need to raise a substantial contribution from public donations. At the same the work will make the theatres more energy efficient, which will help us make long term savings from our running costs.

The total amount we have to raise is £1 million.

So far we’ve reached approximately £600,000 and so we still need to raise another £400,000.

This is a tough target but any donation, no matter how small, will make a huge difference.

What’s the response been like to the fundraising so far?

We’ve had a tremendous response so far from both our members and audiences. This theatre is an important part of their lives, they demand the very best standards in theatre and want to see that continue.

This is really the second phase of an ambitious three phase plan of redeveloping the theatres.

The first phase in 1997 opened up the central part of the theatre, creating a new restaurant and improved facilities. Fortunately at that time we put a lot of the infrastructure in place to allow the next phase to take place. If we ever reach Phase Three, I would like to further extend the Forum Theatre which would allow us to attract even more world class acts to Malvern.

Will this benefit local audiences?

This will benefit us all hugely. The theatre contributes £18 million pounds every year to the local economy and brings people to Malvern from the West Midlands, the Cotswolds, Bristol and further afield.

We also offer a lot to local people. One survey suggested that 60 percent of people aged 55 and over are lonely. Theatres do an awful lot to counteract that, we are a welcoming place for individuals to visit, we have volunteering opportunities and we even run workshops for people who have been recently bereaved. In the old days theatres opened their doors at 7.30pm and threw you out at 9pm; today we offer more than ever and I want to see that continue.

West Malvern feature

West Malvern Arts Festival Dozens of artists and craftsmen will be exhibiting at this year’s West Malvern Arts Festival. It’s a chance to see original work, from local artists, in unusual settings.

Friday 15th August from 2-7pm Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th August from 11am – 6pm

The informal settings for art is what makes the festival special. All kinds of places are used, from back gardens to garages and homes, but also Elim College, St James’ Church, West Malvern Primary School, and the pub garden at The Brewers Arms.

It’s the fifth year for the festival, which is based on a similar event at St Ceneri Le Gerei in southern Normandy, France. ‘We try to be as inclusive as possible with free entry for both the public and exhibitors’ says Laurie Gregory, who started the festival in West Malvern.

On show and for sale is a wide variety of work ranging from sculpture to jewellery, glassware to calligraphy as well as paintings, photography and mixed media. As well as highly experienced artists, it’s also a chance to see the work of some who are new to the Festival. ‘We have quite a bit of feedback from new artists who are very grateful for the advice given by fellow artists on showing, mounting or valuing their art’ says Laurie. Some of the artists will take commissions and a proportion of money from any art sold goes to the Malvern Hills Community Foundation, a charity with the long term aim of providing support for local people in need.

‘It’s a lovely atmosphere’ say Dru Bentley, one of the organisers, ‘and last year we had superb views out to the west which were especially loved by people coming from further afield. We had

people coming from as far away as Nottingham and Newcastle. Word does get around. One of the best things is that the event is free and is popular because it’s very informal and quite quirky. Very often the artists and craftsmen will be working so you might see a weaver or a silversmith in action. We even had one fellow who was writing tiny script on a single grain of rice, and people were asking him to write their addresses, a message or a prayer.’

During the weekend there will also be live music, a vehicle cavalcade as well as food and drink.

‘It’s a lovely atmosphere’ says Dru, ‘it’s a very friendly event and visitors can be assured of the usual very warm welcome for which West Malvern is renowned.’

A Circular Hilly Walk

Muddy paths, stunning views, some climbs and history - this walk has got it all. With a start from the delightful Golden Valley it promises to be beautiful.

Allow one and three quarter hours for this circular walk of 3.6 miles. There are some fairly strenuous sections on Midsummer Hill (932 feet). It will almost certainly be muddy in places so bring a change of footwear if driving to the area. For those interested in our ancient landscape Midsummer Hillfort is particularly impressive, the ramparts, which date from between 470 BC to AD 30, enclose two adjacent summits and a valley.
