Investing...facts versus fears

T

he first two months of 2016 have certainly tested investor nerves, and whilst it’s not quite annus horribilis yet, there has been no hiding place with virtually every asset, sector, indeed country, being adversely affected.

Continued concerns about Chinese growth and a weaker global economy have been fanned by new worries over central banks’ ability to stimulate growth. I have no problem with going on record to say I believe this is one of the most spectacular disconnections between prices and fundamentals, the global economy is still growing, but markets are pricing a global recession, and I believe this is still highly unlikely. That said, the key is to remain invested, and to ensure diversification and risk management. When the upturn comes, you need to be ready to take full advantage of it.

Here are some tips to ensure your portfolio is ready.

Asset Choice The single best way to protect your portfolio is to spread your risk across several different types of investments. There are many different assets in which you can invest, each with different risk characteristics. While the risks attributable to assets cannot be avoided, when managed collectively as part of a diversified portfolio, they can be diluted.

Company specific risk One of the best things you can do is to diversify within the assets. For example, you can spread your investments into different shares or bonds to ensure your portfolio is exposed to lots of different types of investments rather than, for example, having shares in just a few large companies.

Sector exposure It is just as important to spread your investments across different sectors. For many reasons, companies within different sectors perform in very different ways. By diversifying across sectors you can access shares with high growth expectations,

without over-exposing your portfolio as a whole to undue risk.

Geographical Location It’s natural to feel more comfortable investing in your home market, but this is not necessarily the most sensible option. Because investments in different geographical economies generally operate in different economic cycles, they have less than perfect correlation.

Investment funds Keeping track of lots of individual assets can be a daunting task. A much simpler solution is to buy investment funds containing those assets and leave the diversification worries to professional management where one can easily spread investments across hundreds of different assets.

Risk profiling There are now many sophisticated risk profile questionnaires and online tools available to financial advisers to help measure your appetite for risk more precisely, and even your tolerance for loss. The more accurate your risk profile, the greater the chance of recommending the most suitable investments for your needs.

Enjoy Local 6. murder on the nile ‘Murder on the Nile’ has a long pedigree. Published in 1937 as the novel ‘Death on the Nile’, it featured the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. When Agatha Christie adapted the novel for the stage in 1946, Poirot was dropped from the story, the name changed to ‘Murder on the Nile’ and a new sleuth was introduced Canon Ambrose Pennefather.

Malvern Theatre Players will perform this much-loved play at the Coach House Theatre from the 9th to the 14th of May. Performances are at 7.30pm each evening with a matinee at 2.30pm on the Saturday.

The 23rd of April 1616 saw the death of England’s greatest playwright. Malvern Theatre Players are celebrating Shakespeare’s life and work in a weekend event (23rd and 24th April) at The Coach House Theatre. A series of illustrated talks will explore some of the more controversial and intriguing aspects of the man from Stratford-upon-Avon: was he actually the author of the plays; what would he have thought of his plays in the movies?

The event will be presented by Amelia Marriette, an established playwright, who has an MA in Shakespeare Studies from The Shakespeare Institute in Stratford and lectured and taught extensively.

SCULPTOR CARO BULBERRY Local sculptor Caro Burberry is facing a series of challenges this year to help raise thousands of pounds for Acorns Children’s Hospice. Caro, who lives in West Malvern, will be learning to speak Italian, learning to drum, and singing in an a capella group which will give a performance at the end of this year. She’s also taking lessons in Falconry, with Flash, a Harris Hawk. ‘I did my first flight training with him last week’ says Carol. ‘It always looks so easy at displays but it needs a huge level of trust for a wild hawk to do this.’

MAYDAY DONKEY PROCESSION The annual Mayday donkey procession takes place in Great Malvern on Sunday May 1st.

Starting on Abbey Road outside the Abbey Hotel at 11am, there will be a blessing of the donkeys before the procession heads off to St Ann’s Well with several stops on the way. There will be music and performance at St Ann’s Well with the Blessing of the Waters ceremony at 2pm.

The day will raise money for the charity Safe Haven of Donkeys in the Holy Land. There are plans for a free minibus service at 12.30pm to take people to St Ann’s Well.

On Saturday 30th April there will be a Health and Wellbeing Fair from Midday in Rosebank Gardens, with taster sessions of various activities and advice on nutrition and much more.

GREAT MALVERN CLOCK TOWER Fundraising to restore the clock tower at Great Malvern station is off to a good start. Malvern Civic Society hopes £384,000 (plus VAT) can be raised to rebuild the ornate Clock Tower on the roof of the station, an original feature of the building which was dismantled in the 1950s. £100,000 has already been promised towards the project and the Civic Society is asking for people to sponsor individual parts of the rebuilding work, including roof tiles, panels, woodwork and the four clock faces.

malvern heritage walks Great Malvern enjoys a wealth of historic buildings and connections with many eminent Victorians. If you want to find out more, what better way than to join one of the regular guided walks organised by Malvern Civic Society? Denise Preston is one of the guides and tells us more.

What happens on a walk?

Our Town Guided Walks take place every Saturday and Sunday from Easter until the last weekend of September. We meet at 10.30am on Saturdays and Sundays at the Tourist Information Centre on Church Street, where people obtain their tickets, and for the next hour and a half you’ll be taken to places of significance from the town’s earliest history to the present day.

Along the way you’ll hear how Malvern grew from a village to become a town in 1851, and the influence of Dr Wilson and Dr Gully who introduced the Water Cure, although Malvern water was known before then and used as a conventional cure.

You will see some of our oldest buildings which include the Priory church dating from 1085 and The Unicorn pub, built in the 1400s. Members of the Civic Society occasionally host other themed walks, including one with a musical theme and another to some of our blue plaque sites.

What are your favourite parts of the tour?

For me it’s everything connected with our history as a spa town. Buildings like Park View and the former spa buildings opposite The Unicorn pub, stories about Lady Emily Foley and her huge influence as Lady of the Manor – there is so much to learn! It’s a chance to enjoy views to the hills as well as take a stroll through Priory Park with its great variety of trees which have come from around the world. I once led a tour which included a retired Oxford professor who was a horticulturalist. She said she had never visited anywhere in England with such a healthy collection of trees.

Who guides the walks and who comes along?

There are six of us, including myself. Three of us are retired teachers who still enjoy sharing knowledge! We all belong to the Civic Society

and learn our facts by reading everything on local history that we come across. I have my own books but also read more in the library, in newspapers, in publications from the Civic Society and I’ve learned a lot by talking to people.

Local residents come as well as tourists. They tell us fascinating tales of former department stores like Warwick House which gives us a taste of the atmosphere in the town in days gone by. These are things you can’t learn from reading books alone! Tourists come from all over the world, including European countries, Australia, Canada and Japan and the USA. The American visitors tend to be amazed by our history and the age of the buildings. In particular, they love the Priory church, the Foley Arms and the beautiful variety of nineteenth century buildings in Great Malvern.

The guided walks start on the last weekend in March this year and run until the end of September, setting off at 10.30am outside Malvern Tourist Information Centre (TIC). The TIC has more information, and if you can’t make it at the weekend, there’s a self-guided heritage tour leaflet available for £1.

NCT EVENTS The Malvern Hills Branch of the National Childbirth Trust has a busy programme of events this Spring. olunteers will be running a baby feeding and nappy change area at this year’s CountryTastic Show on Thursday 31st March at the Three Counties Showground.

‘This is an event that attracts lots of very young children and so we offered to help’ says Hannah Cooper. ‘Some of the parents in our group say facilities like this make it possible to visit shows with very young children. We will provide a comfortable area for women to breastfeed with a qualified breastfeeding counsellor on hand. We’re keen to offer this service to other local shows, if you’re organising something then please get in touch.’

The Malvern Hills Branch of the NCT also holds its next sale of Preloved parent and baby goods on Saturday 23rd April. Held at The Dome on Imperial Road (part of Malvern St James School), there are lots of high quality, nearly new

There are regular breastfeeding groups - every Wednesday morning at the Riverboat Children’s Centre in Upton upon Severn and Thursdays at The Evergreen Children’s Centre in Malvern Link.

malvern walking festival With more than forty walks ranging from a stroll to a 60 mile hike, there’s something for everyone at the Malvern Walking Festival. Derek Starkey has been involved since it started and tells us more.

How do you decide on a programme of walks?

The planning begins in September when we all put our ideas together to produce the programme with the intention of printing the brochure, updating the website and beginning the publicity by the end of the year. We look for local interest and over the years we have developed the festival according to the ability and needs of the people who come along. Some people wanted something more ambitious which is where our 60 mile walks come from. We even had people who wanted 20 miles or more in a day, so we introduced an end to end walk of the hills and back again. We’ve done 35 miles along the Worcestershire Way in a day, which is well supported. Some people just want to walk two miles and hear the dawn chorus, or a walk around the town learning about its history, so we make sure we always meet the demand for themed walks.

Together with the district council we also do the Malvern Munch, part of the Food Festival, where we take people on a six mile walk with stops to sample local food and drink.

How did the Walking Festival start?

We began in 2002 and originally everything took place over one weekend. We had no more than ten walks, starting and ending in Malvern, whereas now we have in excess of forty walks over nine days. For the first two or three years things were patchy but Robin Elt was instrumental in getting things going, and arranging our first brochures. Ray Roberts created a website for us and took on a coordinator role, making a big difference.Although the festival is now larger, we have stuck with the original intention which is to attract tourists to the area. Today, I believe we stand up against any of this country’s best walking festivals.

Who comes along?

We have quite a few local people from the immediate area as well as people from Gloucester and in the future we’d like to push towards Birmingham. In the past we had a lady form America as well as people coming from Wales. Some return year after year and stay in the town which is what we want. We want to attract tourists who might stay for two or three days and spend money locally. There’s a feeling in the local tourist industry that visitors might pull up in a car park, walk a few hundred yards on the hills before returning to their vehicle and driving home. Our aim is to take people on the hills and show them paths and places they might never otherwise discover.

What’s the future of the festival?

We’ve only got a future if new people can help with the organising. I am now 75 and several other members of the organising committee are of a similar age and we need some successors!

We also welcome new walk leaders, our pool of dedicated volunteers have been with us for some time but we’re always looking for new ones, so if you’re interested then please get in touch.

spring clean for your head

By Satya Robyn As the Spring sun gets stronger it starts to shine into all our dusty corners. This can be a cue for us to get out the duster and give things a more thorough clean. It can also be an opportunity to start getting rid of all that clutter that builds up and up. Books we’re never going to read, clothes we never wear any more, that thingumajig we thought might come in handy…

pringtime also gives us an opportunity to look at some of the dusty old things we’ve been carrying around in our heads.

These might be simmering resentments against people or companies that take up our time and energy, decisions we’ve been putting off, people we’ve been avoiding because there’s something we should have said but we haven’t, feelings of grief, annoyance or disappointment, and all kinds of other head furniture that takes up space and adds to our general levels of stress.

There are a couple of reasons for things in our head getting dusty or mouldy. One is that, just like cleaning, sometimes it’s easier to ignore the things that need our attention rather than face them. And it is easier – in the short term. This is especially true if they are complicated or painful things, like the terrible mess in the cupboard under the stairs, or if we don’t know what to do about them, like the plug that needs changing.

It’s also more difficult if we’re feeling low on energy, or if we have lots of other complicated or tiring things happening in our lives.

The other reason is that, as human beings, we are strongly habit-forming. This habit-forming often works to our advantage - it allows us to drive to work without having to think consciously about every turn of the wheel, or to deal with social situations easily by putting on our usual ‘social persona’. It also has the disadvantage of lumbering us with habits we’d rather not hold on to. Responding to feeling insecure by using sarcasm? Eating chocolate when we’re

bored? This Spring we might want to identify an unhealthy habit that has outlived its purpose and find an alternative coping strategy instead.

If you like the sound of a Head Spring Clean, start by putting some time aside to take stock of the inside of your head. You might want to make a list of all the habits you want to let go of, the things you’ve been avoiding, anything that feels like it draws energy or is taking up space. Then be realistic about what you’d like to tackle. If your house gets into a mess, it’s best to start with a small corner of a room – choose one or three things from your list and start there.

If you feel daunted, get some support from a friend. You could also book an appointment with an appropriate professional depending on your head clutter - a dentist if you’ve been putting off getting a check-up, a therapist if you have a problem in a relationship etc. Above all, remember that the dust might have been gathering for many many years, and so it might take some time to clean it out. Be kind to yourself, and enjoy the results of your Spring Clean.

well dressing festival May bank holiday weekend The theme for this year’s Well Dressing Festival is ‘Friendship - L’Amitié’ which celebrates Malvern’s twinning with the French spa town of Bagnères-deBigorre. round 40 wells, springs and spouts will be transformed by dressers for this year’s festival over the early May Day bank holiday weekend. ‘This is a fantastic theme and we are expecting to see all manner of creative interpretations’ according to Lionel Shorstone, who has been involved with the festival for years.

Well dressing in the area is thought to date back to the 12th century, with records indicating that Holy Well in Malvern Wells was dressed annually. From 1870 Royal Well in West Malvern was regularly dressed, and the Wyche Spring was also dressed by local residents in the 20th century.

Many volunteers return year after year to decorate particular wells, but new well dressers are always welcome and a meeting is being held on Monday 4th April for anybody who is interested. Organised by Malvern Spa Association, the festival sees all kinds of activities including minibus trips to view the decorations and water blessings by different faith groups.

As always the Malvern Tourist Information Centre in Church Street will have information for visitors, telling them how to visit the various sites.

There’s also a Facebook page called ‘Malvern Well Dressing’ which encourages dressers and visitors to share photos of their preparations and decorated sites in full glory.

Judges tour all of the entries, with the winners competing for gold, silver and bronze rosettes.

This year will see the return of the ‘People’s Award’ where members of the public are encouraged to visit the various sites and vote for their favourite children and adult entry.

Wells will be dressed on Friday 29th April and then decorations will be left in place over the Bank Holiday Weekend and into the following week.

wild garlic pate

Serves 4 Ready in 10 min

The local wild garlic* is springing into life. Use these seasonal leaves to make a quick and easy pate.

Ingredients • 1 tin white beans e.g. butter, cannelini • handful of wild garlic (approx25g) • 1 tbsp olive/ rapeseed oil • 2 tbsp lemon juice • salt and pepper (to taste)

1. Wash the leaves and pat dry. Or blanch them in boiling water, and then pat dry.

2. Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend.

3. Season, more lemon juice could be added to taste. A small amount of water may be added to achieve a dip-like consistency.

4. Garnish with fresh herbs. Serve with fresh crusty bread or oatcakes. * Only pick if you are sure you have the right plant, the smell should make it obvious.

LOCAL VOLUNTEERING Volunteering offers the chance to make a difference in your local community. Here are two ideas of how you can help out.

Age UK is offering people the opportunity to get online and make the most of the internet. These informal and friendly sessions aim to increase people’s confidence so they can begin to enjoy the economic and social benefits that the internet offers.

Due to the popularity of the sessions, Age UK Malvern and District needs more volunteer tutors to help for two to three hours a week, on a Tuesday or Friday morning at the charity’s offices at Great Malvern Station. IT tutors will teach mouse and keyboard skills, how to use the internet, emailing, and staying safe online.

If you have a good up to date computer knowledge, experience of using the internet, an interest in using tablet computers and iPads, have good communication skills, are enthusiastic and patient, this volunteer role may well be for you! A sense of humour is also required. Experience of teaching adults would be an advantage, but not essential.

is a group for people with disabilities. For some the conquest is won when they manage to overcome their pain and get to the meeting place.

Others have to fight to hold the brush or see what they are drawing. All enjoy the opportunity to go out to a social event. This couldn’t take place without the volunteers who run the fortnightly group, on Thursday afternoons, in Malvern Link.

One volunteer is needed to help on a regular basis, providing all round help including helping the painters. You need to have a caring nature, have an interest in art and enjoy the company of older people.

Topic of the month: Referred pain It is well known that a heart attack may show up as a pain in the hand, arm or jaw rather than as pain in the chest. This is a classic example of referred pain. As an osteopath I see many examples of referred pain most of which are fortunately far less serious.

Examples

Common examples include knee pain which in fact comes from a malfunctioning hip, leg pain that comes from a problem in the low back and arm pain which comes from the neck. Less commonly a pain in the shoulder for example may be due to a problem with the liver, gallbladder, stomach, spleen, lung or the pericardium. I have also frequently seen worried men come in with testicular pain which in fact turns out to be coming from the lumbar spine. Bizarrely amputees often still experience pain in the limb that is no longer there. This is known as phantom limb pain and must be very disconcerting for the sufferer. On a lighter note even the so called “ice-cream headache” may possibly be a form Copyright General Osteopathic Council of referred pain.

The mechanism

The mechanism is not totally understood and the neurology behind the phenomenon is undoubtedly complex. There are a number of theories to explain it. In general terms it is thought that the brain may misinterpret messages from a structure that doesn’t normally cause trouble. So pain signals from an unusual source (e.g. internal organ) arrive at the same spinal level as signals from areas where sensation is more commonly experienced (e.g. skin). There are shared nerve pathways in the central nervous system which cause the brain to wrongly interpret which of the pathways the signals are really originating from.

How to sort it out? It probably goes without

saying, but to stand a chance of relieving the pain it is essential to correctly ascertain which structures are the likely culprits. A while back, an elderly lady attended my clinic with persistent knee pain. An X-ray at the hospital had revealed only minor wear and tear and on physical examination the knee seemed pretty normal.

However when I turned my attention to her hip it was severely restricted in a number of movements. A second X-ray of the hip revealed advanced osteoarthritis. After joint replacement surgery (of the hip) the knee pain completely resolved. This case clearly exemplified just how misleading pain can sometimes be.

Four actors will take on over 20 characters in this hilarious mad cap dash around the world with Henry Pulling.

He is a retired suburban bank manager with a penchant for dahlias.

He meets his eccentric Aunt Augusta at what he supposes to be his mother’s funeral. She persuades him to abandon his dahlias and travel with her to Brighton, Paris, Istanbul and across the world to Paraguay.

Through Aunt Augusta, a veteran of hotel bedrooms and shady associates, Henry joins a shifty twilight society of pot smoking hippies, war criminals, men from the CIA and hard core art smugglers. To his aunt’s great delight, he finds himself coming alive as he puts his former dull and predictable life behind him.

Travels with my Aunt not only gives us intoxicating entertainment, but also confronts us with some of the most perplexing of human dilemmas.
