This is our busiest magazine ever! With a Food Festival, a Walking Festival, well dressing, traditional dancing and quilting, there is a huge array of events and activities happening throughout April and May. There’s even tickets to be won for the theatre and the RHS Malvern Spring Festival, so you could be enjoying some free entertainment!

As always, we also like to highlight the valuable work of local charities and not for profit organisations, and this month we look at how Girlguiding helps to give skills and confidence to girls and young women locally. They need more volunteers to lead local units, so if you think you can help then turn to Page 34.

Ready, Steady...get advice.

By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall Hardly a day passes at the moment without a journalist giving their view on the ‘Pension Freedom’ which is set to begin April 6th this year.

Whilst it is true that greater freedom will be available, many schemes are not ready for the changes and many providers are unlikely to alter anything as they are under no obligation to do so. As a result, many people could find themselves out in the cold. Here I detail, albeit briefly, a couple of the major choices facing consumers – please note, this is by no means a comprehensive list. Existing annuity holders watch this space, as important changes are being announced and will be explained in a future edition.

Annuity Option The ability to take a tax free lump sum and a lifetime annuity remain but some of the current restrictions on a lifetime annuity will be removed.

For many, this will still be the safest and most sensible option.

Flexible Access Drawdown From April, most pension investors aged at least 55 will have total freedom over how they take an income or a lump sum from their pension.

They can choose to: a. Take the whole fund as cash in one go – 25% tax free and the rest taxed as income b. Take smaller lump sums, as and when they like with 25% of each withdrawal tax free and the rest taxed as income c. Take up to 25% tax free and a regular taxable income from the rest, via income drawdown – where they draw directly from the pension fund, which remains invested, or via an annuity where they receive a secure income for life Any withdrawals in excess of the tax-free amount will be taxed as income at your marginal rate.

So, if you are a basic-rate (20%) taxpayer, any income you draw from your pension will be added to any other income you receive (eg. your salary) and this could push you into the higher (40%) or even top-rate (45%) income tax bracket.

by ‘recycling’ their earned income into pensions and then immediately taking out amounts from pensions.

Under the proposed rules from 6 April 2015, the annual allowance for contributions to money purchase schemes will be reduced to £10,000 in certain scenarios.

Guidance In his Budget speech, George Osborne announced that everyone should have free guidance to help them make sense of their options at retirement. This service will be provided by Citizens Advice Bureau and the Pensions Advisory Service. There will be no charge and your pension provider will be required to tell you about the impartial guidance.

Advice Not to be confused with ‘guidance’ and a must for anyone considering their options. Whilst guidance is indeed useful it won’t necessarily take into account your personal circumstances, your attitude for risk, your tolerance for loss, your long term goals or your short term needs. Unlike professional advice, there is no recourse, no reviews and no in-depth knowledge.

One Saturday 102 years ago a new local club came together for the first time. Ever since then, Malvern Concert Club has put on regular performances of classical chamber music and is still going strong with around 300 active members. It was founded by Malvern’s bestknown former resident Sir Edward Elgar.

The club has always maintained links with leading performers in the classical world. Its current president is Roderick Williams, the internationally renowned baritone who performed at the Last Night of the Proms in September.

For anybody who enjoys classical music but might feel slightly intimidated by the idea of joining a club like this, there is no need to worry according to Wayne Chopping. ‘Personally, I like everything from Dub Reggae to Schubert!’ he laughs. ‘What club members have in common is a love of chamber music.’

Wayne looks after publicity for the Club, which has just completed another successful season of music from quartets, a piano trio and world-class singers.

‘The beauty of what we do is to bring the same standard of musical performance to Malvern that you would hear at the Wigmore Hall in London’ says Wayne. ‘We’re a charity and part of our purpose is to provide quality chamber music locally as well as educate audiences. By that I don’t mean that we subject you to a three hour lecture before a performance, but by a careful choice of music and performers we hope audiences will hear and appreciate something they didn’t know before.’

Performances are held at Malvern Theatres and are open to everyone, not just club members.

However, there are certain advantages to membership which includes a discount on tickets.

‘Members get six performances for the price of four’ says Wayne, ‘and under 18s pay only £5 for a ticket. We do this to encourage young people.

Seating isn’t reserved, you can sit where you like. Some like to sit on the front row and closely

observe the performers, while others will opt for a place further back.’

The club has other activities which include occasional talks, visits to concerts elsewhere, and it does sometimes commission new work.

‘The purpose of that’ says Wayne ‘is to contribute to musical life not only locally but also globally.’

The 2015-16 Season of Malvern Concert Club begins on 24 September with a wind concert by the London Conchord Ensemble. Subscriptions for six concerts are £68 (£15 for students); single tickets (from Malvern Theatres only) are usually £17 (£5 for students).

Coming up in April ‘Fleurs’, a recital of songs inspired by flowers 23rd April, 7.30pm at Malvern Theatres Soprano Carolyn Sampson and pianist Joseph Middleton team up to perform a recital which looks to flowers for inspiration.

They perform this recital as part of a European tour which this year includes The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

Equally at home on the concert and opera stages, Carolyn Sampson has enjoyed notable successes in the UK as well as throughout Europe and the US. She is accompanied in Fleurs by Joseph Middleton, described by BBC Music Magazine as ‘one of the brightest stars in the world of song and Lieder’.

Topic of the month: Anterior knee pain

The main compartments of the knee are where many of the serious knee injuries occur such as meniscus (cartilage) tear, ligament damage etc. However a high percentage of knee pain comes from the anterior structures of the knee including the patella (kneecap), the patella tendon and various other structures. Anterior knee pain is usually worse on stairs (especially descending) and bad for squatting or kneeling.

Adolescent knee pain

In children and teenagers, especially sporty ones, there are some common problems of the anterior knee.

So called patellofemoral pain syndrome is pain associated with abnormal stresses on the knee. Often there is no obvious structural damage seen on MRI. Causes may include misalignment of the patella, flat feet, hypermobility and lack of muscle strength. In cases where there is softening of the cartilage at the back of the patella this is known as chondromalacia patellae.

Another common problem in the young is OsgoodSchlatter disease in which the pull of the quadriceps muscle causes multiple small fractures where the tendon attaches to the bone. It is self-limiting but often leaves the patient with life long bony lumps just below the knee caps.

Adult anterior knee pain

A common problem in middle and older age is osteoarthritis at the back of the kneecap.

The pain is often hard to localise and may be accompanied by crepitus, clicking and swelling. Bursitis is also common. A bursa is a fluid filled sac which can become inflamed in conditions with antiquated names such as house maid’s knee and parson’s knee. Tendinopathy of the patella tendon is another overuse syndrome which is also known as jumper’s knee. More recently, new pain syndromes have been identified. Fat pad impingement occurs when this highly pain sensitive structure gets pinched between kneecap and thigh bone. Plica syndrome is when an extension of the synovial membrane of the knee becomes pinched in a similar way.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Anterior knee pain is a complex subject and the experienced practitioner will still often require the back up of MRI scanning to support a clinical examination.

The majority of the problems described will respond to careful management, hands-on treatment, exercises and correction of misalignment. More severe cases may involve referral to podiatrists, surgeons etc.

Now in its fourth year, The Great Malvern Food Festival will have even more to see and do this year. Taking place on Spring Bank Holiday Monday, the festival has quickly established a loyal following from both locals and visitors.

A cornerstone of the event is the fact that it’s all about local food producers. From The Friday Beer Company to Peter Cooks Bread, all of those taking part are locally based. There will be more than sixty stalls to browse, delicious food, drink and local produce to sample as well as cookery demonstrations and workshops.

This is an event for the whole family and there will be plenty of on street entertainment including accordion music and circus tricks and comedy from Monsieur Doo, a French Chef & Onion seller.

Throughout the day, guitarist and singer Madi Stimpson will be playing a wide range of music ranging from Django Reinhardt to Chet Atkins.

The day before the Food Festival takes place is the Malvern Munch, a 7 mile walk over and around the Hills.

It offers walkers the chance to taste great food and drink whilst listening to live music at stops along the way. The event is the perfect combination of local produce, enjoyed in the countryside in which it was made.

The event was so popular last year it sold out, and tickets for this year’s walk are already selling fast. The organisers say enquiries for tickets are coming from as far afield as London although many local people also take part.

Tickets are £20 for adults and £12 for children and are only available from Malvern Hills Tourist Information Centre on Church Street.

Well Dressing Festival

From Friday 1st May 1 10/03/2015 09:39 Page 1 in Great Malvern and at various locations around the Hills Decorations for this year’s festival will be based on the theme ‘The River of Life’. As in previous years, a large number of volunteers get involved and decorate a well or spring. They interprete the theme with creativity and use a huge variety of materials for their work.

The results can be breath-taking, amusing and thought provoking and attract many visitors who tour the hills to visit them. ‘You may like to set yourself a target of visiting all the dressed sites’ says Lionel Shorstone who organises the event on behalf of the Malvern Spa Association. ‘I’m assured it takes three days and you need to be fairly fit to get up to Dripping Well! We’d be grateful if you can let us know your favourites by emailing us.’

This yearly event continues to grow in popularity.

Last year a record number of forty four sites were dressed. ‘We’re hoping to decorate over forty sites again this year’ says Lionel. ‘We are waiting for Guinness World Records to confirm whether ours is the biggest event of its kind in Britain.’

The Funky Bunker Locating the Funky Bunker can be a bit of a challenge. It really is a bunker, built into the hillside above Regents College in West Malvern with a car park on the top! Soon it will become a new recording and rehearsal space for local musicians.

Ralph Tittley and Pete Nash are busy checking progress on the conversion work. Until recently this building was used as a fitness studio. ‘It became free’ says Ralph, ‘and so I poked my head around the door and thought it would be perfect for us as a recording space.’

The two work together on audio and video productions from their base at Raglan House next door and also plan to use the bunker for voiceover work and video production in their professional work.

Pete and Ralph are making sure the space is properly soundproofed and reassure neighbours it won’t disturb them. ‘We’re doing this properly’ says Pete, ‘with double doors, soundproofing and acoustic treatment on the walls, floors and

There are lots of musicians around Malvern who do their own thing in isolation, so we hope this will become a local creative hub. Malvern Guides need new leaders Girlguiding in Worcestershire is celebrating 100 years and new brownies, guides and volunteer leaders are being invited to join.

Mel Platt who is Unit Leader with 7th Malvern Link Brownies tells us more.

Girlguiding has had lots to celebrate over the past few years. Our Centenary as a worldwide youth organisation was followed by the Big Brownie Birthday with the focus on girls aged between 7 and 10 years. We are now celebrating 100 years of Girlguiding in Worcestershire.

Guiding happens every weekday night somewhere in the Malvern area. Week in week out groups of girls are out and about doing challenges, or enjoying comradeship and activities in the meeting place. The core values of the movement remain the same - we aim to instil strength and confidence in young women and raise their aspirations with a balanced and varied programme.

Last year all the Malvern units with girls from 5 to 19 years old as well as adult leaders went bowling and took over the venue! The Brownies had a sleepover at Malvern St James School as well as joining another massive sleepover with 2,000 other brownies at the Three Counties Showground.

The Guides attended the BIG GIG at The Wembley Arena, where they were dazzled by some of the greatest names in the pop world, as well as the fun-packed Wellies and Wristbands festival, with activities ranging from kayaking to zip-wires. So far this year, a group of Brownies and Guides attended Go Global, an event celebrating the arts. We will be at the Countrytastic event at The Three Counties Showground and also helping at the Civic Week event in Priory Park 12th July.

Girlguiding offers opportunities to broaden horizons with international travel. This year we have two members attending the Jamborette in the Netherlands, and two other girls going to Our Cabana in Mexico. Two of our leaders have been selected to go to the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Japan as part of the International Service Team.

Really Easy Fruit Cake Ingredients

• 100g sunflower margarine • 1 cup of brown sugar • 2 cups of dried fruit •1 cup of cold tea • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • 2 cups of self raising flour • 1 tsp mixed spice

1. Grease and line a cake tin. Preheat the oven to Gas 4/180°C. 2. Melt the margarine in a large saucepan; add sugar, mixed fruit and tea.

3. Boil, add bicarbonate of soda.

4. Cool, then add sifted flour and mixed spice.

5. Mix gently until all the ingredients are combined.

6. Spoon into the cake tin.

7. Bake for just over an hour until cooked.

The Dingle

Walk 13

A delightful walk west of the hills starting in West Malvern descending through the countryside to the pretty village of Colwall.

A fairly physically demanding uphill return is required, but fortunately ample opportunity is available along the route to replenish spent calories and to invigorate the mind and body.

The walk starts by heading up The Dingle - signs of quarrying are evident and further ahead is a strange looking weather vane, which is in fact an old sewer ventilation pipe (another three of these can be seen around West Malvern). After a visit to a hidden spring the route heads down Brockhill Road and past a pair of large lime kilns. Continuing past The Downs school, many folk are unaware they are passing over a miniature railway tunnel. The railway with a 9 ½ inch track extends for nearly a mile around the school grounds and is reputed to be the oldest private miniature railway in the world. Skirting around Colwall brings us to The Chase Inn before heading back towards West Malvern, past a five-storey former brewery which was active until the 1940s and is now apartments. A walk through the former West of England quarries brings us back to our starting point.

The Appleyard Dancers The Appleyard Dancers are a group of local women who regularly perform at events across the area. They dance in a folk/morris and traditional English style and practise at Earls Croome. Diana Maiden tells us more.

How and when did the Appleyard Dancers begin?

Appleyard Dancers were formed in 1991 and we still have a musician and dancer from that time. I am the Bagman so I organise the various events and dance outs. The only requirement is a sense of humour - many beginners comment that they have ‘two left feet’ but we encourage anyone to have a go, whatever their age or experience.

We are all ladies but have both male and female musicians.

Where do you perform?

We practise very Thursday evening at Earls Croome Village Hall from 7.30pm but we regularly dance out with other sides at different pubs or at various events such as festivals and fetes, at a wide variety of venues. We have a very strong group of musicians so that we often have seven or eight of them playing when we dance out.

What kind of dancing do you perform?

On Easter Monday we are joining up with various other groups at The Fleece Inn at Bretforton for a Day of Dance. We shall be dancing in Malvern for St Georges Day, at either the Abbey Gateway or the Library, so do look out for us.

The dancing is quite similar to Morris Dancing - we use hoops, sticks with bells and coloured hankies. Although some of our performances are traditional morris dances, others come from all over the country from a wide variety of traditions.

Three ways with purple sprouting broccoli As vegetable growers there is a frustrating gap in the year between March (the end of last season) and late April (the start of the new season) – six weeks of “what can we offer our customers” to break the boredom of stored potatoes, parsnips, swede and carrots!

The answer for us is always ...Purple Sprouting Broccoli. Socalled because of the delicately purple tinged florets and leaves that sprout from the main stem which are picked as they mature leaving other florets to mature for the next cut.

I had never seen “PSB”, as we call it, until moving to Worcestershire and it is a crop I truly look forward to now, at its best in March/April. Of course the reason for its popularity in this part of the world is that like the other Worcestershire favourite, asparagus, our soils and favourable climatic conditions grow the best plants and there is a ready market for it sold freshly picked straight from the field. It is not the sort of vegetable that lends itself to the supermarket supply chain and you are unlikely to get hold of a perfect sample unless you visit a local greengrocer or farm shop – buy it freshly picked, then...

As you are going to eat this vegetable whole it is a good idea to rinse it thoroughly (remember it has been standing in the field all winter!), trim the end of the stems, thicker stems may need to be shaved slightly, and then toss it into a pan of generously salted boiling water for 3-4 minutes.

Test the stems with a sharp knife to see that they are cooked to your liking. Serve immediately with a knob of butter, salt and pepper.

In a Stir Fry This is the “whole-ish” version of the vegetable! It is best blanched as above then plunged into cold water to stop it cooking and drained. Prepare the rest of the stir fry as you choose, then roughly chop the broccoli and toss it in for the last few minutes of cooking.

Griddled with a Poached Egg This might seem a lot of fuss for such a simple vegetable, but believe me, the flavour brought out by the hot griddle is delicious. Blanch and drain the broccoli. Scorch the stems on a hot griddle pan by laying them alongside each other like soldiers. Then season with salt and pepper.

A softly poached egg on the side makes this a delicious light meal.

Malvern Quilters Spring Quilt Show is a popular event and brings visitors from as far away as Wales to view the work of this busy local group.

A resurgance in popularity of traditional crafts is creating new interest in quilting and bringing new members to the group.

‘This is a chance for our members to exhibit the quilts they’ve made in the two years since our last exhibition’ says Ann Kay. ‘The hall will be full because we do like to fill the place and have as many quilts on display as we can. There’s a real variety of work. A lot is based on traditional designs but we do have a few who are creating quilts to their own designs. There are many different ways to go about making a quilt and we have a good spread across the different styles.’

‘We get a lot of comments from visitors that there’s so much to see’ continues Ann. ‘We get people coming from Wales, they’ll make up a car full and come. A lot of ladies bring their husbands, they’ll have lunch at our exhibition and then have a drive around the hills. If the weather’s lovely that’s a added bonus!’

As well as refreshments there’s an opportunity to talk to and buy from traders at the show, while a ‘sit n sew’ table gives keen quilters a chance to carry on their work in the company of others.

Malvern Quilters is an active group with a busy diary that includes fortnightly meetings with

talks and workshops as well as visits to other exhibitions. Numbers have been growing recently which Ann believes is because of new interest in their craft. ‘Television series like Sewing Bee and Kirsty Allsop’s programme mean that younger people are starting to take an interest. It’s good to welcome new people to our group, alongside our core of long standing members.’

An important part of the show is a Charity Raffle which will raise money for the Worcester Breast Cancer Support Group. The main prize is a quilt (pictured) called ‘My Heart’s in the Garden’ and which measures 150 centimetres square (60 inches square). Helping both men and women deal with the trauma of a relationship that has irretrievably broken down.

By Malvern Branch Co-ordinator: Gill Owen I got involved with Divorce Recovery Workshop (DRW) 3 years ago when a friend who had been on the course found it so inspirational she wanted to set up a local branch in Malvern, which is the only branch in Worcestershire.

The workshops are run by experienced volunteers who have all been through the breakdown of a long term relationship and attended the workshops. Although my own divorce was a long time ago, I had to attend the workshops before becoming a facilitator.

I was amazed to discover just how many emotions I had buried. Once I had completed the workshop I knew I had come to terms with my past and could let it go. When you go through a breakup you don’t always realise how much grief, resentment and anger you hold on to or how emotionally and physically exhausting it can be.

How can Divorce Recovery Workshop help?

The breakdown of a long term relationship is a form of bereavement; yet unlike the death of a partner, you are often expected to carry on as normal. Whilst friends and family can be supportive, they don’t always understand how you feel and even your best friend will eventually have had enough of you going over and over what has happened!

Anyone who has been through the heartache of an irretrievable breakup is welcome at DRW, even if you are going through the divorce or if it was years ago. DRW will help

you cope with the many different emotions: shock, disbelief, rejection, anger, bitterness and guilt. You will gain a better understanding of what you are going through and be offered strategies to help you cope.

What actually happens at a workshop?

The course consists of six sessions covering: • Is this really happening to me?

• Coping with your 'Ex' • Assuming new responsibilities • Letting go and forgiveness • Family matters • Thinking about new relationships Participants watch a DVD on each topic and then divide into small groups with 2 facilitators per group. Everything said in the group is strictly confidential and no one is pressured to talk if they don’t want to.

When is the next one taking place?

On Tuesday evenings on 14th, 21st and 28th April and 5th, 12th and 19th May, with coffee at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

Is there a charge for the Workshop and where does it take place?

DRW is a non-profit making registered charity but to cover our running costs we ask participants to pay £60 for the entire course.

The venue is in Churchdown Road, Malvern and there is a free car park.

frog

I sat facing a blank page for about an hour this morning. Occasionally I wrote a few words and then I deleted them. They didn’t feel like the beginning of anything worthwhile...

By Kaspa Thompson I wrote about my oldest cat sleeping at my feet. I wrote about the squirrel stealing peanuts from the bird feeder. I wrote about the new seedlings we have just planted out. And then I deleted all of the words and there was the blank page.

keep distracting myself - until this morning when I was faced with a blank page.

I opened my favourite social media sites and closed them again. I browsed the news headlines. I looked out of the window. I looked at the blank page.

Mark Twain said, “If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And if it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.”

I thought a change of scene might help so I went and walked around the garden. It was cold and the sun was hiding behind grey clouds, and although I half-planned where new flower beds might be I didn’t think of anything to write about.

I came back inside and started to make a cup of tea. While I was waiting for the kettle to boil I remembered an old friend that I had been meaning to write to for a little while.

We used to be in regular contact but for reasons I don’t completely understand communication seemed to break down this year. We kept missing each other, arranging to meet and not quite managing it, and then we just stopped talking to each other…

For a while I thought I might hear something from him, and then I put it out of my mind and got on with all of the things I have to do: seeing clients, running a temple and running my mindfulness classes. Or at least I thought I had put it out of my mind, but every now and again I would find myself telling other friends about what had happened. Eventually I realised that I hadn’t really let this go at all and that’s when I decided to write to him.

That was sometime last week. I could have carved out time to write before today but the immediate demands on my time allowed me to

I couldn’t get started on this article because something else, the un-written letter, was getting in the way.

The un-written letter, that I was nervous about writing, was the biggest frog and I kept pushing it to the side of my plate.

I brought my cup of tea back up to my office and wrote the letter. As I wrote it the worries I had around how it might be received disappeared.

This friend and I have had a strong relationship in the past and I’m sure it will be received in a good spirit. I hope so at least.

Having swallowed the biggest frog I was able to sit down and write this article.

I’ve learnt this lesson many times before, but I still sometimes find a way of pushing the biggest frog to one side.

If there is something to be done – get on and do it. Putting it off can take just as much energy and can stop you from doing anything else.

Wilde’s superb satire on Victorian manners is one of the funniest plays in the English language – the delightful repartee and hilarious piercing of hypocrisy and pomposity can still make you laugh out loud.

Written shortly before Wilde fell foul of society’s unbending condemnation, The Importance of Being Earnest fizzes with wit as he delights in debunking social pretensions. Two bachelor friends, upper crust dandy Algernon Moncrieff and the most reliable John Worthing J.P., lead double lives to court the attentions of the desirable Gwendolyn Fairfax and Cecily Cardew. The gallants must then grapple with the uproarious consequences of their ruse, and with the formidable Lady Bracknell.

David Suchet is one of Britain’s most respected actors on both stage and screen. Best known for his title role in television’s Poirot, his most recent stage credits include Long Day’s Journey Into Night and All My Sons in the West End. Winner of an International Emmy award for his performance in BBC drama Maxwell, he has been nominated for numerous Olivier, Tony and BAFTA awards throughout his career, and was awarded the CBE in 2010.
