Don’t be surprised if you see them this Spring, as Symon Winter from Malvern Hills Walking Tours is planning to start offering local Llama treks. When we came across them on Castlemorton Common, Symon told us they seem to love being around the Hills, which he thinks reminds them of their native South America. Equity Release is here to stay

By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall It was back in 2011 when I first wrote an article on the subject of Equity Release. Since then at Smith Weale Associates, and it seems nationally, there has been a marked increase in the amount of people turning to this very reputable but sometimes divisive area of financial planning. As such I feel we should once again look at what is fast becoming an extremely popular way of raising money for a whole host of reasons.

It is a great paradox that so many people across the country have considerable equity invested in their homes and yet disappointing retirement incomes, leaving them to struggle with extra expenses and rising living costs after they finish work. Interest on savings is still at an all-time low, pension annuity rates are still at an all-time low, care home costs are increasing, more and more over 60s are turning to their properties as an alternative way of solving the shortfalls.

The History Equity Release is finally showing signs of shaking the negative stigma often associated with the mis-selling horror stories of the 1980s and 1990s.

Those choosing equity release now can enjoy low borrowing rates and three levels of protection through a structured financial advice process regulated by the FCA, face-to-face legal advice and many product safeguards.

Independent advice Equity release products can be complicated and it is important to seek specific tailored advice from an independent specialist, as everybody’s circumstances and needs differ. It is essential the advice you seek is independent and from the whole of the market, and importantly only from firms regulated by the Financial Services Authority. As an extra precaution, companies that subscribe to SHIP (Safe Home Income Plans) can give that extra peace of mind, as this is a self-regulating industry body set up by lenders and offers standards and an ethical code of conduct.

The Products Equity Release can take many different forms with some plans involving the sale of part or all of the property, often referred to as Reversion schemes. There are also plans that are very similar to a typical mortgage whereby the loan has interest payments, but are deferred or paid; this type of plan is a Lifetime Mortgage. Within the product itself there are variants like lump sum payments, income payments or a drawdown facility giving ad-hoc payments. There are pros and cons to each and every type of equity release and the correct solution will only become apparent once all circumstances are considered.

The Process The first priority is to establish whether or not an equity release is even suitable, sometimes the property is not acceptable or the ages of the individuals do not meet lending criteria.

Sometimes, after careful consideration, it is a straight forward decision that this type of solution does not sit happily with those concerned.

Whatever the reason, if it is established after meetings with an adviser that equity release is not suitable, then that adviser has done just a good a job as if equity release was suitable not least because this decision should not be entered into lightly, the need for face to face consultations is never greater than here.

Alternative Options?

With your family and adviser, alternative options must be considered; for example, do nothing, downsize, borrow from family members, arrange an interest only mortgage, to name a few. It is important all angles be explored, only then can you make an informed decision.

Malvern Town News

Great Malvern hosts its fourth annual food festival on Bank Holiday Monday 26th May 2014. It will be a day packed full of delicious events including cookery demonstrations, food stalls and street entertainment. And you will find a wide selection of local artisan food and drink producers.

This great, free event will take place in the grounds of Malvern Priory Church. There will be a demonstration featuring Felice Tochinni, a highly acclaimed chef from Fusion Brasserie in Worcester who has appeared on television many times.

Also appearing is Robert Swift, one of the UK’s leading bread makers who will be sharing the secrets of baking perfect bread. There will be demonstrations of vegetarian, Egyptian and Asian cuisine plus examples of how to cook great food on a budget.

And there will also be activities for children and entertainment from local musicians and street entertainers.

Community Focus

Community Champions Community Champions are needed to help people struggling with issues that include housing, health, welfare benefits, money advice, employment and consumer issues. Paula Kingston is setting up the volunteer scheme on behalf of South Worcestershire Citizens Advice Bureau (Malvern) and tells us more.

Are you someone who knows your community well? Would you like to help local people access the information and advice that could help them?

Could you attend local events to promote your role? Would you be able to volunteer for at least four hours a week? If so, you could make an ideal Community Champion.

This is part of a two year project to increase access to advice services within our rural communities. Every year our Citizen’s Advice Bureau (CAB) helps thousands of people locally, it is rewarding work that can significantly improve the life of our clients. We are running this with South Worcestershire DIAL and it’s being funded with lottery money.

We’re basing it on a similar project in Gloucestershire that is very successful. Called Village Agents, it helps older people gain better access to health services, benefits, care and housing. Our CAB already has outreach projects in Upton and Tenbury and the new champions will help to extend that work .

Our project is here to help everyone, but we’re aiming it at rural areas where people may be isolated either through poor public transport or disability. The Champion will be someone who knows their community and the different groups within it. They will be a local access point for CAB services, providing people with initial information and signposting them towards further help.

People volunteering as champions will be given introductory training which is an opportunity to prepare for the role and find out more about the work of CAB. There will be ongoing support and

we’ll hold regular get togethers for all our local champions who can share their knowledge and experience with each other.

One of the most interesting parts of working with us is learning about a range of topical issues.

You will see at first hand how the benefits system works and how people struggling financially can get their money problems in order. You will gain an insight into the overcoming of consumer issues. All of these skills will make you better able to deal with difficulties in your own life. Of course, there is even greater satisfaction in helping other people to successfully manage these issues and improve their own lives.

Great Malvern feature

Floral Festival After the great success of last year’s shop window displays, The Great Malvern Floral Festival comes back to shop windows in the town centre this May.

‘Last year’s displays were so impressive’ says Anna Brook who is organising the festival this year, on behalf of the Great Malvern Association of Traders. ‘The winning entry was created by Brays, whose model of Wallace and Gromit riding in a floral aeroplane was superb!’

Staff at Brays scoured local car boot sales for props and used old coat hangers for their model which was displayed in the window of their department store. Almost twenty local businesses took part, creating displays which included cars, lifesize people and hot air balloons.

‘This year, our theme will be Once Upon a Time’ says Anna, ‘which gives plenty of scope for creativity. There should be a real buzz around town, as the RHS Spring Gardening Show is on at The Three Counties Showground at the same time. With the Well Dressing Festival taking place the weekend before, there is lots to see and do on a floral theme.’

There are plans this year to host an awards ceremony and its hoped that a guest from the world of television gardening might be handing over the prizes in an event on Belle Vue Terrace on Saturday 10th May. ‘I can’t reveal too much detail at this stage’ says Anna, ‘but we hope that we will be able to host a very special day in the centre of Great Malvern. The Yarn Bombers, a group who create amazing knitted displays, should be turning Belle Vue Terrace into a fairytale wonderland!’

The Great Malvern Floral Festival runs from Thursday 8th May until Sunday 11th May. Window displays can be viewed at any time during the festival, full details can be found at www.allaboutmalvernhills.com

Malvern Tourist Information Malvern Tourist Information Centre is getting ready for a busy Spring and Summer. The building, a former bank, is a landmark at the top of Church Street and despite its name is not just for tourists.

‘A lot of the people who come in here are locals’ says Marylyn Pettitt from the centre. ‘We hold all kinds of local information including bus timetables and we issue parking passes for the Hills on behalf of the Conservators.’ If you’re ever stuck for something to do at the weekend, the staff at the centre are here to help.

One of the most frequently asked questions is, not surprisingly, for the best places to walk on the Hills. ‘We have quite a range of maps and walking guidebooks’ says Marylyn. ‘We answer a lot of questions about walking routes but many more people come in to ask for the location of springs where they can collect the local water.’

Some visitors are returning to Malvern after spending time here forty, fifty or even sixty years ago. ‘In the post-war years, a lot of young men were sent here to complete their national service’ says Marylyn. ‘There were a number of camps locally including one at Blackmore. We started a book for these visitors to sign, as a reminder of their time here.’

Other visitors come to trace their family history and discover their own connections to the area. Regular events at the Three Counties Showground bring in many thousands more people, and lots stay for longer to make the most of the area. We direct walkers to many different places depending on their interests and of course can recommend many routes of varying difficulty.’

As well as local information and holiday information on the rest of the UK, Malvern Tourist Information Centre stocks plenty of gift ideas with a local theme including new Malvern chocolate, Holywell Malvern Spring water, exclusive souvenirs, books, prints and cards. The centre on Church Street is open seven days a week between 10am and 5pm. MALVERN WALKING FESTIVAL Saturday 24th May until Sunday 1st June This year’s Walking Festival offers forty walks which range from gentle strolls to the challenge of a 59 mile trail completed over six days. There will be special interest walks covering subjects including local geology, botany and local history.

The festival aims to offer something for all abilities and interests with routes graded as either Easy, Moderate, Hard or Energetic.

Among this year’s many highlights are: An Evening Country Walk – Five miles passing old and interesting buildings, when you can learn about a local ghost and a lost monkey!

Grade: Moderate, Saturday 24th May Worcestershire Way in a Day – A 31 mile walk for fit and very experienced hill walkers only, graded as Very Strenuous, starting at 7am in Great Malvern with an estimated end time of 8pm.

Monday 26th May Worcester Countryside, River Teme and Local History – Six miles starting at Collett’s Green, exploring the landscape of the lower Teme valley, graded Easy. Topic of the month: “Pins and Needles” What is it?

Medically “pins and needles” is known as paraesthesia and we’ve all experienced the prickling, tingling, numbing or burning feelings that occur after accidentally sleeping on an arm or sitting on a hard toilet seat for too long. The nerve is temporarily squashed but normality returns within a minute or two of moving. Some pins and needles are however longer lasting and this phenomenon often merits further investigation.

What causes long term pins and needles?

Many cases of long term pins and needles that I see are also caused by mechanical nerve compression but the cause of the compression may not disappear so easily.

For example pins and needles in the hand may be coming from the wrist (carpal tunnel syndrome), forearm (pronator teres syndrome), elbow (ulnar nerve injury), or neck (spondylosis/osteoarthritis). The particular fingers affected often give a good clue as to the precise whereabouts of the nerve compression. However it is important to be aware of the many other potential causes of paraesthesia.

Other causes

Sometimes the nerve itself may become diseased (neuropathy), often as a consequence of other medical problems.

For example, diabetes can commonly lead to pins and needles especially if it isn’t controlled properly, as can Vitamin B12 deficiency, malnutrition, chronic alcohol abuse, chemotherapy, hyperventilation, toxin exposure and neurological disease.

Occasionally arterial disease may show up as pins and needles too.

What can be done?

As ever accurate diagnosis is the key. The vast majority of cases that I see in practice have a simple mechanical explanation and can be treated using the time honoured hands on techniques to “free up” the nerve.

However in severe cases or when a medical problem is suspected I liaise with the GP to achieve the best result for the patient.

Malvern in Bloom The hard work has already begun to transform Malvern into a floral paradise!

This year, Malvern is representing the West Midlands in the national Britain in Bloom awards, and so both councils and volunteers are pulling out all the stops to make sure the town is looking at its very best throughout the summer.

Malvern already has an enviable reputation for its floral displays. In the regional Heart of England Bloom awards it has won Gold eight times over the past nine years. This year, Malvern will enter the regional as well as the national awards, and so will undergo two rounds of judging.

John Jordan chairs the local Malvern in Bloom committee. ‘I don’t want to give away too much about our plans for this year, but we are hoping to draw attention to some of our many amazing local trees. Some of the specimen trees in Priory Park have been there for more than a century.’

A ‘tree trail’ is planned, taking people around the park so they can learn more about the origins of our exotic local specimens, which include magnolias, a tulip tree, a handkerchief tree and cedar trees that are more at home on the other side of the world. ‘One of my colleagues hit on the idea of putting numbers on them and asking the public to try and identify them’ says John.

‘There will be separate competitions for adults and children to identify the trees, after which the numbers on the trees will be replaced with information about the trees themselves.’

In the meantime, staff from both the town

council and the district council are hard at work to spruce up areas across the town, along with many other partners which include The Civic Society, neighbourhood groups, The Malvern Spa Association, churches, retirement homes as well as day care and convalescent centres.

‘Many volunteers are involved in the work’ says John, ‘and we’ll know just how well we’ve done after judging at the end of July.’ Malvern will be judged twice, firstly for the Heart of England award on 25th July, and then by the Britain in Bloom judges shortly afterwards.

News from the Hills

Malvern Well Dressing Festival Dozens of springs around the Hills will be decorated for the Festival which takes place over the Bank Holiday weekend at the start of May. The theme for this year’s decorations is ‘Peace’.

‘Our theme of Peace enables those who wish to remember 1914 to do so, while those whose feeling about War is “let’s not do that again!” can take other perspectives such as The Quiet Life, Brotherhood of Man, The Countryside and so on’ says Lionel Shorstone who organises the event on behalf of the Malvern Spa Association.

‘Announcing the theme at the start of the year has given people time to come up with some wonderful artistic creations.’

It all comes to a head on Friday 2nd May when some forty sites around the area will be transformed by teams and individuals who each adopt a spring to decorate. Judges will then tour all of the sites before awarding gold, silver and bronze rosettes to those they consider the best.

Now well established, the organisers claim to be the biggest festival of its kind in Britain.

‘Prior to the 1990s Malvern’s slowly-vanishing ‘wellsprings’ were dressed when people felt inclined to do so’ says Lionel. ‘Then the efforts were drawn together, with the Spa Association co-ordinating it and seeking always to help people and improve standards.’

Energy Co-op A new co-operative in Malvern has been formed to encourage more local generation of energy. The first job of the Malvern Community Energy Co-op is to raise enough money to place solar panels on the roof of Malvern Cube. Robin Coates, one of the ten organisers, tells us more.

The origins of this scheme go right back to the early days of Transition Malvern Hills (TMH), the Energy Group wanted to do large scale community energy schemes but the hurdles were too big at that time and there was lots to do with the gas lights and energy surveys with Thermal Imaging .

Later TMH put a big effort into helping save the Malvern Youth Centre, now called the Cube from closure, and running it as a viable centre for the community. Finding a way of reducing its running costs was important. A PV panel array providing low cost electricity could make a useful contribution.

So our first project is to install a 25kW solar pv panel array on the roof of Malvern Cube.

This will not only help us to play our part in combating global environmental issues, but will also financially support the Cube by supplying low-cost electricity.

The cost of carrying out this work is around £32,000 and the only way we can get the project off the ground is by raising this money through a share offer. Subscribers should see an average annual return of around 3 percent on their investment over twenty years (and over twice this if they are taxpayers), but there are of course risks involved. You can read more on our website (see the address below) or I am happy to talk it through with anybody who has more questions.

What this scheme offers is an opportunity to make a local, environmentally sound investment.

A local company, Solar Solutions of Malvern will supply and install the equipment and after that it should supply the building with power while generating money through the Government’s Feed In Tariff, which means that any excess electricity we generate is sold to energy companies via the national grid.

Our launch meeting was well attended and we already had more than 40 people expressing

an interest in taking part beforehand. Getting to this point has been a lot of work as will the administering of the share offer, but fortunately we have a team of volunteers who are making it all possible. We’ve had a lot of help from a group called Share Energy. They recently completed a similar scheme which brought solar-generated electricity to the Leisure Centre in Leominster.

They’ve also been involved in small scale hydro schemes and a biomass project around Woolhope in Herefordshire. Since they’ve been through the process before, they’ve helped us to assemble the relevant documentation and get the necessary approvals.

We’re already talking to other building owners in our area to see if we can extend the scheme. We need roofs which are large, south-ish facing, and that will remain in the same ownership for the 20 year life of the Feed in Tarriffs. Potential buildings also need to be using electricity during the daytime which is when electricity is generated by solar power.

Apart from the practical benefits from this scheme, I think our ultimate aim is to create examples of the ways in which individuals can reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining a comfortable lifestyle. We need to be far less wasteful of energy and more conscious of its use, but we can still live well. The Electric Bike Scheme and Car Clubs are good examples of this as well as our food growing projects. I believe an important contribution to our future energy generation is through micro-generation like this one, and the creation of local micro-grids which are supported by the national grid.

The purple crocuses underneath the apple tree are wilting. A few bright daffodils have opened their faces to the sun. A blackbird is stealing the dark fruit from the ivy climbing up our unsteady fence.

It’s good to be in the garden again. I have been planting potatoes and garlic in the veg. patch, and thinking about the best spot for a new lemon tree that I have been given.

Watching and taking part in the natural world is one of the best things I do for myself at the moment. I have a regular meditation practice, but I am sure that being in the garden is just as good for my soul.

Noticing what is around me takes me out of myself. When I pay close attention to the natural world there is no room left over in my mind for the usual daily worries and frenetic thoughts that occupy me.

Even just a few minutes of giving my awareness completely to the garden can make a massive difference to my mood for the rest of the day.

Being in the garden teaches me many things.

It reminds me that I am not at the centre of the world. Even the smallest patch of earth is full of life which is nothing to do with me: a crab spider waiting for prey, an earthworm turning over the soil (doing far better work than I can do with a spade), and thousands of invisible microbes.

When I encounter this much life it puts my own life into perspective. In the face of the vastness of the world some of my worries seem

inconsequential and disappear and the others become smaller and more manageable.

Being in the garden teaches me patience too. I planted out a bed of asparagus last year; this is a plant that takes three years to mature. Last year I watched the feathery spires grow without being able to harvest any. This year I will do the same.

Next year, if the plants are still alive, I will finally be able to taste what I have grown.

Personal growth can take time as well. Watching the asparagus grow teaches me not to want to rush to the end of things. Paradoxically rushing to the end can means it actually takes longer to get there. If I took the stems before they were ready I could kill the whole plant and then I’d have to start again, and wait another three years.

Everything ripens in its own time. This is true in the garden, and in our whole lives.

This month, as we move through spring and the natural world begins to show itself again, make time to spend time outside. Give your attention to the world, and see what you can learn from it.

Hat-tastic!

This year’s Malvern Carnival and Hat Festival takes place on Saturday 12th of July. It will be based on the successful Hat Festival that is run at Bridport in Dorset each year where locals and visitors decorate a hat and parade through the town showing off their creations.

The Carnival commences with a vehicle parade where local groups, businesses and organisations are invited to decorate some type of vehicle and wear hats on a theme they choose. This will be followed by a hat wearing walking parade and schools, youth groups and other organisations based in the Malvern Hills area are invited to have fun, dress up and take part. There will be competitions, music, children’s activities and prizes for the most creative hats.

The Malvern Carnival and Hat Festival have chosen to raise funds on the day for the Sunshine Children’s Centre in Malvern which supports disadvantaged children and families locally. ‘It is a great cause where the people of Malvern are supporting some of the most vulnerable families

Jazz Weekend The Great Malvern Jazz Weekend brings live music to the centre of town at the start of the Easter weekend.

‘We’ve been inspired by other local music events, and wanted to bring contemporary jazz to Malvern’ says Rob Miller from the Belle Vue Deli, who is organising the weekend together with Tony Wilkinson from Oliver’s Bar. ‘We were impressed with the number of people taking part in Malvern Rocks last years’ says Rob, ‘and we wanted to do the same for jazz.

While the Upton Jazz Festival focuses on trad jazz, we have a more contemporary flavour to our programme.’

Over the three days in April, a number of town centre venues will host performances including The Courtyard, The Red Lion and The Morgan Pub as well as Oliver’s, the Belle Vue Deli and the Great Malvern Hotel.

‘We’ve got a great variety of musicians playing, from jazz quartets to big bands including the

Worcestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra and The Chase Big Band. Entry to all events is free and I hope that as well as attracting jazz lovers, we’ll also see a lot of people who haven’t heard live jazz before.’

As well as running the deli, Rob is a professional musician playing trumpet across the area and performing with The Groove Front, a jazz quintet who will be playing at the Festival on Saturday 19th April.

The Jazz Weekend takes place on Friday 18th, Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th April, with free performances each day from 2.30pm, continuing into the evening. You can read more at www.malvernjazzweekend.co.uk

Pygmalion Alistair McGowan leads an established company of actors in a centenary year production of Shaw’s enduring masterpiece directed by Tony award-winning David Grindley. Pygmalion is one of theatre’s most entertaining and beguiling explorations of gender and class and is perhaps best known as the inspiration for the musical ‘My Fair Lady’.
