April 2011 Published and edited by: Sascha McDonald All About Local Magazines Ltd 07906 573352 allaboutmagazines Photo Front Page: kindly supplied by Happy Campers; showing their two Campervans Graphic Design & Layout: All About Magazines Editorial: Sascha - 07906 573352 Advertising: Tina Palmer - 07952 591031 Distribution: All About Malvern is distributed to 7,200 homes and businesses in Malvern Booking Deadline: For May - Friday 8 April

Welcome to the April issue of ‘All About Malvern’. We’ve reached a small, but significant milestone for the magazine, as this month we’ve expanded by eight pages. That’s because more local businesses than ever want to place an advert with us, but what it also means is that we’ll be able to offer more local stories and information each month. One of those new pages is written by Rob Weale of Smith-Weale Associates in Malvern. Rob’s a financial adviser and will bring us regular information about financial planning. You can read more on Page 6. We’re always keen to hear about local events, initiatves and the stories of amazing people living in our part of the world, so if there’s something you’d like to see in print, please get in touch. Of course the extra pages will also have some more adverts, and I do urge readers to keep the magazine handy to refer to throughout the month. Just such a thing helped me after my car broke down, and I’d like to thank Forward Motors in Malvern link (Page 24) who helped me out at short notice and got my car going again! Thank goodness the winter’s over! Have a lovely April, Sascha, Publisher & Editor

Pension Shake Up by Rob Weale from Colwall From April 2011, UK pensioners will no longer have to use personal pension pots to buy annuities and will now have far greater choice and control of how to take their pensions, dependent on their individual circumstances. It is one of the biggest shake ups of UK pensions in 35 years. Changes to UK Annuity Purchase Rules in 2011 Under current regulations, pensioners have no choice but to convert personal pensions into annuities which provides a defined income for life. Under the new annuity purchase rules, however, the compulsory element will be scrapped. From April 2011, consumers will be given more flexibility in how they choose to use their retirement savings. They can, for example, still convert to annuities if they wish, but will also be given more options such as income drawdown and continued pension investment. There are also new tax advantages worth exploring. Annuities An annuity is affectively a ‘promise to pay’ from an insurance company, whereby you will give them your pension pot and they will give you an income for the remainder of your life. This income level will be determined by a number of factors, age, gender (although this will not be a factor from December 2012), health, and then other options, for example indexation, spouses benefit and guaranteed periods. Often labelled unfair for a number of reasons, not least because a pensioner dying soon after buying one loses most of their life savings to the annuity provider. Another negative factor is that annuities are at an historic low, a £100,000 pension pot buys an annual income of just £5000pa compared to £10,000 in 1995, meaning you must live at least 20 years to receive your pension pot back. What are the Income Drawdown Pension Rules? Although consumers will not be forced to annuitise pension savings from 2011 and could, as an alternative, drawdown income as cash lump sums, there are still rules to be followed. These have been set into place to try and avoid people running out of retirement income and becoming dependent on

state benefits. High earners and those on company pension schemes may be given more flexibility under the new rules. Who Will Benefit From the 2011 Changes to Annuity Purchase Rules? Although many people will be pleased not to have to buy an annuity, the benefits of the new system seem to be loaded towards higher earners. True flexibility under the changed rules will only be given to those who meet the minimum income regulation. They can then choose how to drawdown their personal pensions. Those that cannot meet this limit may be freed from the commitment of buying an annuity but may not see much change to income levels in retirement. Their drawdown will be limited to the same kinds of rates that they would be paid by an annuity, depending on the value of their pension pot. They may, however, be able to benefit from investing for longer, have greater investment choice, take ad-hoc payments, changes also give more flexibility to those that do wish to buy an annuity but that want to choose when they do so to try and wait for rises in income rates. Will UK Pensioners Continue to Buy Annuities as a Source of Retirement Income? What is important, is that proper advice is sought from an Independent specialist, an annuity should always be purchased after comparing the ‘whole of market’, as huge variants can exist in what your current pension provider offers, and the open market. Every policy holder has the right to shop around. With regard the drawdown route, again, an independent specialist will be able to help assess whether a drawdown is suitable, and if so recommend a provider and mange your pension going forward.

Rob Weale is a founding partner at Smith Weale Associates. We can help make the critical decisions, manage your pension both pre and post retirement, and choose the very best solution tailored to your individual circumstances from the whole of the UK market place. We welcome your enquiry; 01684 577037.

All About... ...A Champagne Garden Celebration

Megan Taylor is the Chair of Macmillan Cancer Support’s Fundraising group in Malvern. She’s been involved for the past six years. The group has organised a special fundraising event at the Spring Gardening Show.

S o tell us what’s happening We’ve managed to get access to the Spring

Gardening Show on the evening before it opens. Our event is called ‘A Champagne Garden Celebration’ and will be a unique chance to take a look around part of the show before it opens to the public. As the title suggests we’ll be serving champagne and canapés to guests in the new Garden in Harmony Theatre. We have Carol Klein the television gardener coming along as our special guest, and she’ll be making a special presentation during the evening. As well as the chance to wander around the show gardens we’re hoping some of their designers (and gardeners) will be on hand to chat to as well. It should be a glamorous event!

How did you manage to get access to the Show before it opened?

Isn’t putting on an event like this a lot of work?

It is, but as well as raising money for the charity it helps to keep our profile high locally, which in turn encourages other people to raise money for us, whether its sponsorship for running a race or organising a coffee morning. At this year’s evening we’ll be organising a raffle and the kinds of prizes that are donated to us are fabulous. Up for grabs are; the use of a holiday cottage in Wales, two tickets for the Hampton Court Flower show, vouchers from the Three Choirs Vineyard, a magnum from Chase Vodka and a meal for two at Corse Lawn Hotel. Perhaps the most unusual prize on offer is a day for two at Webb’s Garden Centre at Wychbold, where you’ll be working alongside some of the gardeners and be treated to lunch!

We just asked! This kind of event is not uncommon, last year the National Gardens Scheme did something similar at the Show on the opening day. We simply approached the Showground, went along for a meeting and this is the outcome. Putting on an event like this isn’t easy, and we couldn’t have done Photograph by it without the generous support of a Jonathan Buckley number of local businesses.

What else do you do to raise funds?

We generally hold an event every year; but still the bulk of our fundraising comes from standing on the street with a collecting can. This year we have eleven days of collecting around Malvern. We’re a small but very active fundraising group and are keen to welcome new members if you can spare us any time.

How many people help organise this event?

There are ten of us in the local fundraising group, but we also have many ‘ad hoc’ helpers who step in to lend a hand, especially when collections take place. Of course we’re enormously grateful to them and to the community at large for the support we receive. Very often people help us because they, or a relative, or a friend has been touched by cancer. I was asked to join at the moment my son was diagnosed with cancer. Fortunately he’s since undergone successful treatment. Increasingly people do survive and this is why the work of Macmillan is so important. This year Macmillan celebrates its Centenary, and to mark the anniversary we are all “going the extra mile” to raise much needed funds.

The Champagne Garden Celebration takes place on Wednesday May 11th from 6pm at the Three Counties Showground. Tickets must be purchased beforehand, they cost £25 each and can be reserved by sending a cheque and a stamped, addressed envelope to Parrys of Malvern, 115 Church Street Malvern WR14 2AJ. Cheques should be made payable to Macmillan Cancer Support. Please mention All About Magazines when responding to adverts

Aches and Pains Treatment Clinic at Prospect View Medical Centre Ask the Osteopath

David V Jones BSc(Hons) DO Registered Osteopath

Your questions answered: After 20 years in practice and over 50,000 treatments I have seen many interesting cases.

This is from the Greek words meaning “vertebra” and “slip”. In other words it is the slipping forward (or backwards (retrolisthesis)) of one vertebra relative to the one below. It is relatively common with up to 7% of people affected.

What causes it?

What are the symptoms?

Usually there is low back pain with referral into the buttock muscles and the legs. Often the leg pain is a result of pressure from the disc as it becomes distorted by the slippage. Pain is often worse for prolonged standing and sometimes relieved by sitting. Spondylolisthesis can also occur in the neck.

Nature’s Nectar of Nutrients

During a recent walk along Brockhill Road between West Malvern and Colwall, I struck up a conversation with a bee keeper tending to her bees. She was covering the hives with carpet to keep the bees warm and feeding them with a sugar syrup to keep them alive until spring arrives. Apparently last year she lost a whole hive and wasn’t taking any chances this year. I learnt a lot in that conversation, how the bee populations in the UK are declining and how essential bees are in the pollination of many flowering plants.

Health Benefits of Honey Raw honey is one of nature’s richest super foods, containing over eighty different health-giving properties because of its unprocessed nature. Pure, unheated and unprocessed honey embodies the natural bouquet of wild flower pollination and is a potent source of natural enzymes and healing elements. Truly raw honey is pure and creamy, smooth with fine textured crystals that stores indefinitely and improves with age. It is a great alternative sweetener because it enters the blood slowly, therefore maintaining a balanced stream of energy.

Decline in bee population According to the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, three of Britain’s twenty five species of bumblebees are already extinct and half of the remainder have shown serious declines, often up to 70%, since the 1970s. They believe part of the problem has been the intensive use of pesticides, some since banned, that has had an impact on the British Bee population. We gardeners, often unwittingly, do a fair bit to help bees. But if we all do a touch more, our collective impact may well help tip the balance back in their favour. There are key ways we can tempt them in and increase their numbers. The common belief is that bees enjoy plants from the blues, yellows and white spectrum. Apparently, bees cannot see red: a poppy looks black to them. Bees find double flowers difficult to work, they simply cannot get to the nectars because of the mass of petals. So choose plants as close to the natural species as possible and add early flowering plants. This will help the early bees who venture out when temperatures are still chilly, allowing them to gain vital sustenance. For this reason, the snowdrops and crocuses of the past two months are very valuable to bees.

Easter Honeyed Chocolate Nests 1. Place 12 paper cases into a bun tin 2. Melt 150g (5oz) of milk chocolate and 40 g (1 ½ oz) butter with 2 tablespoons of honey 3. Stir in 60 g (2oz) rice krispies or cornflakes 4. Spoon the mixture into the paper case and shape into nests leave to set in the fridge for 1 hour, then fill each one with 3 mini chocolate eggs. If you are interested in Bee Keeping, take a look at

Coffee Morning Organiser with Age UK

A volunteer is needed to run Age UK’s popular, weekly Tuesday coffee morning at St Matthias Church in Malvern Link. The volunteer will organise the volunteers who make and serve the coffee, buy the refreshments, handle the cash and pay it into Age UK’s office. Another duty is to co-ordinate transport to the morning by updating the weekly passenger list, and arranging the volunteer drivers’ rota. (This could be done by a second volunteer). A handover period will be available with the retiring volunteer.

Spring into Action Spring is in the air, the evenings are getting longer, and it’s time to get out and enjoy yourself! Here are a few ideas of activities and events to get involved with this Spring. We’re looking well ahead until June so there’s plenty of time to plan ahead. This is not all, in the next edition we will highlight more activities coming up.

2010 Barbara Meddows' dressing of Earl Beauchamp's Spout

WELL DRESSING The theme of this year’s Well Dressing Festival is ‘Togetherness’ which ties nicely into the Royal Wedding happening on the same weekend. Around forty local springs will be decorated across the hills, which the organisers say makes theirs the biggest event of its kind in Britain. ‘Of course Derbyshire is well known for its well dressing traditions’ says Lionel Shorstone from the Malvern Spa Association, ‘and we enjoy some friendly rivalry with them about who puts on the best show!’ Since the royal couple have chosen Well Dressing Day to get married, the decorations will be put up on Thursday 28th April. They will remain in place until the evening of Tuesday 3rd May and during the bank holiday weekend there will be a full programme of events. Perhaps the highlight of the weekend is a donkey pilgrimage to St Ann’s Well, a reminder of how visitors to Malvern travelled around the hills in days gone by. There will also be guided tours to various sites both on foot and by minibus. Water blessing ceremonies are planned with the druidic ceremony taking place at Hayslad Spout on Monday 2nd May at 3pm. ‘The popularity of our festival seems to be growing’ says Lionel. ‘This year we’ve had a lot of enquiries from travel clubs and others interested in coming to see what we do’. You can obtain full details of the Festival events from the Tourist Information Office in Malvern on (01684) 892289.

28 April - 3rd May 44

WALKING Malvern’s annual Walking Festival starts on 28th May and over a week there’ll be 38 walks ranging in difficulty from an easy ramble to a physically challenging multi-day walk. This year sees the introduction of a brand new ‘History Trail’, which will take in 63 miles of walking in the beautiful countryside between Malvern and Hereford, while remaining in sight of the hills over six days. There won’t be any overnight stops on the way, each morning walkers will be transported to the start point and brought back to Malvern each evening. One of the festival highlights is the Malvern Hills ‘End to End’ and so this year the organisers are making it a double event with a staggered start which will allow more people to join in. Even so, they’re warning that to be sure of a place you’ll need to book early. Many of the other walks follow a theme. This year there’s a five miles family walk called ‘Intro to the Malverns’ on the first day. Another takes in the middle hills of the ridge, and an evening walk called ‘Shades of Evening’ begins at 7pm from West Malvern. Once again, the rich and fascinating geological history of our area will form the basis of several walks along parts of the Geopark Way, a long distance route highlighting the incredible variety of local geological history. Other routes venture away from the hills, taking in parts of the Teme Valley and Wellington Heath. There’s a breakfast walk at The Old Hills in Callow End, and another walk at Alfrick. There will be walks with literary and artistic connections, and others investigating our heritage from prehistory, through Victorian times to the Second World War. As well as giving a start and estimated finish time, all the walks are graded, so you can choose whether you fancy something ‘Easy’, ‘Moderate’ or ‘Energetic’. Bookings for the festival can be made online, you can pop into the Tourist Information Office on Church Street in the centre of Malvern, or call them on (01684) 892289.

SPONSORED WALKS The Malvern Hills Walk for St Richard’s Hospice offers the chance to enjoy a good day out and raise money for a good cause at the same time. Hundreds of people are expected to take part in the event on Saturday 21st May with routes of 2 miles, 5 miles and 11 miles depending on your fitness. There’s no entry fee but participants are asked to donate their sponsorship money to St Richard’s. Last year more than 500 people helped to raise more than £22,000 towards the work of the hospice, which helps patients and their families who face cancer and other lifethreatening illnesses. Phillipa Jones who’s the Community Fundraiser for the Hospice says “This walk is a hugely popular event and appeals to all ages. The Malvern Hills are spectacular and give such panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. There is a choice of walks depending on your fitness levels and a great sense of camaraderie”. Individuals, families, and groups are all welcome, there will be catering on hand and first aiders will be in attendance to support the walkers. For more information call 01905 763963 or you can download a registration form at

Saturday 21 May

On 25th June a one day walking event takes place in support of the NSPCC and Childline. Starting at Colwall Village Hall, walkers will cover 21 miles of local countryside around the hills over the course of a day. It’s the third time the challenge has taken place, and each time the route changes so that anybody who’s taken part in the past will face a new challenge this time around. Its a popular event. Last year three hundred walkers took part, helping to raise over £30,000 for the charity, which helps young people who are worried, in trouble, or in danger. The event doesn’t just rely on people walking, last time a team of a hundred volunteers helped make sure the day passed off successfully, and so if you can help, the organisers would like to hear from you. They also need experienced walkers to lead volunteers to and from marshal points and to act as ‘safety sweepers’, helping people towards the back of the group complete the walk. For more details call the ChildLine/NSPCC fundraising office on 0844 892 0217. There’s more information at

Going up... or sideways?

If you crave additional living space but building an extension is not an option, why not transform the space you already have.

Garage and loft conversions can be more cost effective than extensions and add value to your property too. On average, we’ll have you in your new room in 6-8 weeks from work starting.

We have helped many happy customers with the following: Conservatories n Replacement windows and doors n Automated garage doors & sun awnings n Roofline & guttering n Bathroom/kitchen refits n Extensions, loft & garage conversions n Wood-burning stoves n Plumbing (Gas Safe) & electrical (NICEIC) work n

Please call Simon on 01531 631965 or email to discuss your project and book an appointment. We want you to love the work we do for you and to love how we do it.
