I often walk past Malvern Priory, but if I’m honest I rarely think about the crucial place this building has in the history of our town. Indeed, its possible to say that without the Priory, Malvern might never have become the town we see around us today. Over more than nine centuries, this fine church has witnessed the turmoil of english history, from the worst moments of the plague to the vandalism of the Reformation. Throughout it all, the building provided not only spiritual support but much more practical help too; handing out ‘dole’ to the poorest of inhabitants, tending to the sick, providing lodging for travellers as well as giving employment and education. Its a truly fascinating story and next month will be retold in a spectacular sound and light show in the heart of the Priory itself. Make sure you read the story later on in this month’s magazine.

An orchestra has been formed to play specially commissioned music. As well as adult choirs, children from 14 local schools will be singing in different performances thoughout its run. ‘The workload on Carol Green the Musical Director has been phenomenal’ Rob tells me, ‘she’s been going into local schools to help them rehearse and supporting the individual teachers who are leading their choirs’.

The drama is narrated in the voice of William Langland, author of ‘Piers Plowman, one of the great early works of english literature which outlines a vision experienced on the Malvern Hills. The decision was taken to write the entire narrative in verse, a challenge that’s taken many months to complete.

Rob says it has been satisfying to tell the stories many of us know less about. ‘For example that of Lord John Somers, to whom the obelisk at Eastnor is dedicated. I won’t tell you more because we’ll reveal all in the performance, but I can say that he has an important message for our politicians today!’

Apart from entertaining audiences, and celebrating the Priory’s 925th year, there’s a legacy to the project as well. The work will be used as the basis for a local heritage trail through the town. The state of the art sound system being installed for the performance will stay in the Priory afterwards, allowing it to be used for many more performances in the years to come.

Performances of ‘Light and Dark’ take place at Malvern Priory between 2nd and 13th November 2010 (except for Sunday 7th). Tickets are priced from £8 and are available from the Malvern Theatres box office on (01684) 892277. A discount is available for group bookings.

Barnards Green describes itself as ‘Malvern’s great little shopping centre’.

Down the hill from Church Street it has 41 businesses that pulled together to form one website barnardsgreenshopping.co.uk. The site is full of information on all the shops and services, events, and latest news and you can follow links to the individual websites of each business. Jane Knowles, from one of the shops involved, Just So, tells us about the experience.

Was it difficult to put the website together?

No, it was surprisingly easy! We called all the local businesses from Barnards Green together for a meeting and put the idea forward. Everyone was really happy to go along with it. We felt it was important for us to move with the times. And over 40 businesses have got involved.

What’s the purpose of the website?

A number of businesses in Barnards Green were already trading online and we wanted to bring

everyone together in one place. There’s a high concentration of independent locally based traders here and most of us use each other’s services. What we wanted to achieve with the site is to create an online version of how we already work together in the real world. It is worth checking out the site for special offers, discounts and events the shops may be running. But this isn’t just for the traders, we really want this to be a useful resource for everybody who lives in the area. Our idea is to make the website a focal point for all community activity and a showcase for Barnards Green. There is a real sense of community here and we’re proud of it.

Eating with the Seasons Eating seasonally means eating food that is at its peak in terms of flavour and nutritional content, while at the same time cutting down on food miles, says our resident health expert Allison Maxwell from Colwall.

Produce is at its peak nutritional value when it is ripe. But fruit and veg travelling long distances to market are often picked before they’re fully ripened. While the produce might gain colour and softness on its journey to the supermarket, nutritional value comes through the stem from the living plant.

Once harvested, a vegetable is as nutritious as it will get. Therefore, eating seasonally means eating food that is at its peak in terms of flavour and nutritional content, while at the same time cutting down on food miles.

At this time of the year there is an abundance of fresh produce in season including apples, pears, mushrooms, butternut squash, elderberries, watercress and figs, to name but a few! The humble apple is among the most popular of fruit eaten in Britain, it has many health giving properties. The adage “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” may be truer than you think.

Recent studies have suggested the consumption of apples can help control weight gain, lower the risk of heart disease and help protect against some cancers. Though most people think the flesh of the apple is the delicious part, the skin is definitely the most nutritious. The pectin in apples lowers LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Apples also help to maintain a healthy digestive tract, helping to eliminate toxins in the bowel.

Watercress is a highly nutritious vegetable, a dark green plant with a pungent acidic flavour. Watercress

has been valued since ancient times for its health benefits, bright colour and refreshing taste. The name refers to the fact that it grows in clear running water. Watercress is rich in vitamins and minerals, especially iron. These days watercress is a proven antibiotic, so it is interesting that Hippocrates is reputed to have sited the first hospital by a stream in order to have it in ready supply. Modern cultivation is based in beds around freshwater springs. The main British season is from October to May. Walking around Colwall village I noticed an abundance of elderberries ripening on the trees.

Elderberries are distinctive dark blue or indigo to black small fruits that hang from the elder trees in dense umbrel clusters. Aware of their immune boosting properties I decided to use them to make a cough syrup, but there are many other delicious recipes for these berries, especially elderberry wine!

Lastly, if local food and drink is your thing then be sure to try and visit the Flavours of Herefordshire Food Festival on Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th October. The annual festival is now in its fifth year, and celebrates simple, natural, local food. Lizzy’s Recipe Red Wine and Beetroot Risotto

A great way to use beetroot. Makes a good starter but can also be served as a main course. Use a quality red wine, something which you would happily drink - it will make all the difference.

Serves 4, Ready in 30 minutes 300g of risotto rice (e.g. Arborio) 1 large white onion 250g of cooked beetroot 750ml to 1 litre of red wine 100ml of balsamic vinegar 1 litre of vegetable stock 3 tbsp of fresh thyme or 1 tbsp dried thyme 2 cloves of garlic

1. Pour the wine and balsamic vinegar into a pan and reduce to a thick syrup.

2. Meanwhile, finely dice the onion, half of the beetroot, and half the thyme, to form the base for your risotto.

3. Blend the remaining beetroot and thyme with the garlic to form a thick puree, put to one side.

4. Bring the stock to the boil. Lightly sweat the prepared risotto base over a low heat, add the rice and fry briefly.

Then add the wine reduction and stir to coat the rice.

5. Add the boiling stock to the rice a ladle at a time, stirring all the time, for 20 minutes.

6. Serve immediately topped with the beetroot puree.
