Four months after the floods in Pakistan, the United Nations estimates more than 14 million people are still in need of immediate humanitarian aid. There’s no immediate end in sight for the dire situation. Nearly two million homes were destroyed or damaged. Large areas of crops have been destroyed. Disease threatens the lives of many children. Faced with these stark facts, many people here in Malvern are doing what they can to try and help.

Jo Harper, a local yoga teacher has got together with a colleague, Annette Brown, to organise ‘A Day of Yoga’ which they hope will raise money for the victims of Pakistan’s floods. Its taking place on 21st November and if you’d like to take part there are details in an advert on Page 15.

Although the scale of the disaster is vast, every little bit of help we can offer will go towards saving someone’s life, and making another’s more bearable. Well done Jo and Annette!

Christmas Markets Our local markets offer us the chance to buy some of the freshest local produce around, and with Christmas on its way there are plenty of gift ideas too. Here is our guide to three vibrant markets you can visit on your doorstep.

FARMERS’ MARKET Malvern’s Farmers’ Market has been going strong for ten years, and appears on the third Saturday of each month at the top of Abbey Road. ‘It seems to work well in Malvern’ says Henry Wormington, who sells meat at the market. ‘We get a lot of regulars coming each month, others who just pop by occasionally, and then there’s the foodies who follow us round the county!’ The Market in Malvern is one of several venues around Worcestershire, with food producers travelling to different towns each week. The Malvern market carries on through the year with only a short break for Christmas.

‘You name it and we do it’ says Henry. ‘We’ve got four meat producers with everything you can think of, including venison, and duck. We certainly stock more than you get in many butcher’s shops’. There are also people selling vegetables, with a choice of organic alternatives, there’s cakes and savouries, the most incredible array of fresh bread, plenty of fruit and even some craft stalls too. For Henry, the success of the Farmers’ Market is a simple philosophy. ‘Our customers like to buy local, and they like their food fresh. That’s what we’re all about.’

Malvern Farmers’ Market takes place on the third Saturday every month between 9am and 2pm: 20 November & 18 December.

ARTS AND CRAFTS MARKETS For lovers of arts and crafts markets, there are two big events coming to Malvern between now and Christmas. They’re organised by Steve Boffy, who runs a local events company. ‘The market on 4th December is part of the Christmas lights switch-on and will be the biggest we’ve held in Malvern to date’ says Steve. ‘There’ll be more than thirty stalls in the grounds of the Priory and stalls will be dressed up and ‘christmassy’. Last year so many people commented on how beautiful it was. My family is from Vienna and I was brought up knowing what a proper Christmas market should be! It’s not just about decoration, there will be mulled wine mingling with all the festive smells and sounds’. As well as the arts and crafts in front of the Priory, there’s a food market taking place on Abbey Road, with produce from local growers. ‘People are coming back for Malvern’s Christmas celebration every year,’ says Steve, ‘and they really look forward to it. For me that says it all.

We like to think we’ve become part of the town’s new Christmas tradition’.

Before then, there’s another arts and crafts market in town on 20th November, again in the grounds of the Priory. On offer will be ceramics, glass, jewellery, woodwork, textiles, photography, painting and metalwork. Steve describes it as containing ‘the whole gambit of arts of crafts’, with the artists themselves running the stalls. ‘It’s a chance to buy original works, many people respond to that and some even go on to commission a bespoke piece of work. In these hard times the markets have managed to sustain themselves, we’re seeing people buying less, but buying quality which is something we offer’.

in Malvern COUNTRY MARKET For fans of local produce, cakes, savouries and even Stawberry and Lavender Jam, the weekly Country Market at the Lyttelton Rooms in Malvern is not to be missed! ‘We open at 8.15 in the morning, and you’d be surprised at the number of people who make the effort to come early to pick the best of what we offer’ says Phillipa Lowe who manages the market.

Country Markets are found all over Britain and began after the second world war thanks to the Women’s Institute. These days the markets are no longer run by the W.I. but the ethos of ‘local produce and recycling’ remain the same, and nearly 70 years on find themselves back in fashion. Even so, tastes are changing, and the items sold at the market also reflect the more exotic nature of our diets these days.

‘Last week someone made a chorizo tart. It sold immediately. We wouldn’t have seen them six years back’ says Phillipa. ‘We’re getting a bit more daring and our customers respond. In the summer I made falafel, customers loved it and so I’ve continued selling it’.

A huge range of homemade cakes and savouries are on offer from individual portions to family size.

There’s locally grown fruit and veg including the sorts of things you’d be unable to buy in the shops.

‘Our mulberries this year were freshly picked and delicious’ says Phillipa. ‘We’ve had fifteen different varieties of apples available as well, admittedly the oranges used in our marmalades are grown abroad but practically everything else is local, the furtherst away our producers come from is Upton on Severn!’

All About...

David Bethell works for the Federation of Small Businesses in Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire. The FSB is a not-for-profit organisation that campaigns on behalf of its members and offers them business services. David is responsible for increasing membership and helping its members locally.

Tell us a little about yourself?

I’m Herefordshire born and bred, grew up in Ledbury, and apart from a short time when I lived in Malvern I’ve always lived in the county. I worked in the food industry for around thirty years, the last fifteen of which I was the Director in a small private company. As well as the day to day running of the business I travelled all over the world. Because of that experience I can understand the daily pressures that many members of the FSB face when running a small business. I came to the FSB six and a half years ago, I work as part of a team, I focus on increasing our membership in this part of the UK.

Tell us what you do?

On average I visit between 15 & 20 local business every week. If people need to see me I go and visit them, nothing replaces sitting face to face to discuss something.

The same issues seem to come up time and again.

Changes in legislation, the government, health and safety, tax issues, problems in relations with banks and general financial help. The issues today are increasingly difficult and we offer legal and tax advice via 24 hour help lines from a ‘real person’. We’re a big enough organisation to be able to provide this kind of expertise.

The other area our size helps is in saving money through our buying ability. We offer exclusive rates on business insurance, banking, Chip and Pin, e-commerce, phones and the internet or fuel cards, and many others. We’re’not for profit’ so we negotiate a good deal, don’t take a cut ourselves and the member gets the benefit.

Has the current economic

situation changed the kind of help you give?

Some small businesses have been forced to lay off staff and in general there’s still not a lot of economic confidence around. For many companies its very much

hand to mouth, day by day, so in some cases we have to be of immediate help, rather than working in the medium or longer term.

For example if a company faces a sudden problem with its bank, or they need to hire or make someone redundant, they need help straight away. The state of the economy is affecting every type of business at the moment from new start-ups to companies that have been going for generations.

One way we’re helping small businesses at the moment is the creation of local networking events, giving them the chance to talk to other people in their situation and to find new people to do business with.

We’re calling it ‘Strictly Networking’ and locally they’re happening in Malvern and Hereford. It takes place between 5.30pm & 7pm in the early evening, there’s no cost or strict format, its just a case of turning up and chatting to people. As well as helping members of the FSB, the networking events are open to anybody at all, so please just come along if you’re interested. So far we’re getting good feedback about them.

This month: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS)

What is Fybromyalgia syndrome?

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a relatively common problem characterised by widespread muscle pain and tenderness to the touch, which may or may not be accompanied by fatigue, sleep disturbance, depression and gut problems etc. Until recently it was not universally acknowledged by the medical profession. However the World Health Organisation now recognises it as a condition distinct from other rheumatological disorders.

What causes FMS? There is no known single cause for FMS but there are many theories. These include genetic factors, stress, post viral syndrome, abnormal hormone and neurotransmitter levels to name but a few.

How is it diagnosed?

There is no definitive test for Fibromyalgia. e.g.

Blood test results, MRI etc. are usually normal.

It is often a diagnosis of elimination. In other words, all other causes have been eliminated and there-

fore Fibromyalgia is about the only explanation left for the symptoms. On examination, I look for pain in all four quadrants of the body which has been present for more than 3 months and tenderness in at least 11 out of 18 specific sites in the muscles at any one time.

How is FMS treated?

Often drugs are given to help with FMS. These include antidepressants such as Amitriptyline which in small doses may be used to help with sleep problems and pain. In my clinic I see many FMS patients who prefer a more physical approach to treatment. I usually use specific soft tissue techniques and medical acupuncture. The treatment always has to be tailored to the individual as not all patients respond in the same way. Some patients also benefit from gentle exercises including specific stretches. It must be emphasised that there is no cure for FMS but often quality of life can be improved significantly.

Beat the Winter Blues Is your mood like the weather ...dark and gloomy? If you have lost that zest for life then you may be suffering from SAD! When the sun is shining most of us feel happier and more energetic. Conversely, when it’s dark and gloomy, many people feel more lethargic and less sociable. If you find yourself in the latter category you may be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as SAD. For most of us, the end of summer signals the start of cosy evenings tucked up indoors and the excitement and sparkle of Christmas. For those suffering with SAD, it is the start of half a year of dull, grey days and endless nights. It has only gained credence within medical profession relatively recently. Since then various products from pills to light boxes have flooded the market.

SAD is a type of depression and is also known as the ‘winter blues’. It is a cyclical disorder, which means that it will appear and then go away at approximately the same time each year. It starts in September and ends in April when the mornings get lighter. No one really knows what causes it but one theory states the chemical composition of the body is changed because of the shorter days. Levels of melatonin, which regulates sleep and mood are disrupted, there are also falls in the levels of a chemical called serotonin. The exact mechanism of how these changes occur is still unknown.

So you may be wondering what exactly SAD feels like. The symptoms can be mild, ranging from a change in appetite, sleep problems, irritability or joint pain to extreme tiredness, depression and even despair. On a personal note, in recent years I have a noticed a change in my general well being as September approaches. I tend to lose my vivaciousness, eat more and find myself constantly moaning about the dark evenings and long awaited spring! Could I be suffering from SAD? On a positive note I am going to have a trial with a light box and see if that changes how I feel, if it does then I have the answer.

The light box is designed to simulate the brightness of a spring morning. The theory behind it is to stimulate the pineal gland in the brain which suppresses the production of melatonin, a chemical which makes us feel sleepy and ready for bed as night falls. Bright light at daybreak is designed to stop this process, in order for us to wake up. However, when the light is low in autumn and winter, the brain does not receive enough light to stop the melatonin, this increases feelings of lethargy and the symptoms above.

Light boxes have been shown to be effective in up to 85 per cent of diagnosed cases. Light treatment is used daily in winter and even during dull periods in summer. It consists of sitting two to three feet away from a specially designed light box, usually on a table, allowing the light to shine directly into the eyes. The user can carry out normal activity such as reading or eating while sitting in front of the box.

Treatment is usually effective within three or four days and the effect continues provided it is used every day.

Light boxes are not available on the NHS but are available from specialist retailers. If you’d like to find out more about Seasonal Affective Disorder, a charity called The SAD Association (SADA) can help you.

Charity Spotlight Malvern Civic Society Name: Malvern Civic Society Info: Natural and built heritage interest society Website: www.malverncivicsociety.org.uk Meetings: 2nd Friday of each month, Holy Trinity Church Hall, Link Top Contact Name & Number: Greville Megson (Treasurer) 01684 572748 The Malvern Civic Society is a voluntary organisation and registered as a charity which aims to preserve local heritage. It was founded under the name ‘Friends of Malvern’ in December 1958 at a meeting in the Mount Pleasant Hotel. Here a group of locals decided that Malvern’s rich and illustrious history ought to be protected and promoted for future generations. The organisation continues to thrive today as the Malvern Civic Society with social and educational elements available to all members.

The Society holds monthly public meetings with lectures on a wide range of topics from environmental issues to local history.

They also arrange coach trips to sites of cultural and historical interest, for instance in November they will travel to Sotheby’s in London for a tour of the galleries and auction house.

They are responsible for a number of community projects. The society sponsors the ‘Bands in the Park’ every summer, Malvern in Bloom and the Autumn in Malvern Festival. They also research and instigate commemorative blue plaques honouring local people of historical

significance. In addition, they work alongside the Council to uphold the town's high standards of architecture, which makes Malvern so picturesque, by opposing unsightly new builds and awarding tasteful architecture. This year’s Architecture Award went to Malvern College’s new boarding house that managed to fuse a modern design with traditional materials and style.

The Society will be holding their AGM at 7.30 pm on Friday 12th November at the Holy Trinity Church Hall in Link Top. Here they'll discuss their plans for the coming year with a backstage tour and matinee performance at the National Theatre, lectures on Pugin and Holst, and a visit to the Morgan Factory in Malvern Link.

Membership costs £10 per year and includes a wide range of activities, the Annual Report and monthly Newsletters which are distributed at meetings.

New members are always welcome, particularly if you are interested in making a contribution to the community, meeting like minded people and attending some fascinating events. Contact Greville Megson the Society’s Treasurer or visit the website for more details.

What is Barbershop? - A (very) brief history:

Four part, unaccompanied and close harmony, the barbershop style of singing can be traced back to the mid 19th century developing from a coming together of African American gospel and early jazz styles of music.

The unaccompanied improvisation of harmonies was frequently heard in bars, parlours and, in particular, male hairdressing salons as customers entertained themselves whilst waiting their turn for a haircut or shave.

Quartet singing became popular in Vaudeville in the early 1900’s as the music became more structured and less improvised, before giving way to the then newer sound of the Crooners. However, recent years have seen a mini-revival of Barbershop in both chorus and quartet formats, the style lending itself well to not only its traditional songs but also to rearrangements of more modern music – even that of the Beatles!

“VALE HARMONY” BARBERSHOP CHORUS Vale Harmony started in 1977 after a small group of friends saw and heard a large ensemble in Bristol known as “The Great Western Chorus”. They were so impressed that they returned to Worcestershire determined to start their own chorus.

By 1978 Vale Harmony was up and running – its first public performance being in November of that year.

The chorus has never been a serious threat to the

‘big guns’ like Great Western but has been successful in local competitions at music festivals in Hereford, Worcester and Cheltenham, whilst by way of concerts and sing-outs the chorus has provided the public with much pleasure. In 2009 the chorus joined forces with a Ladies’ chorus ‘Vale Connection’, and together gave a series of performances raising £10,000 which was equally divided between Birmingham Hospitals ‘Kidney Kids Appeal’ and The Alzheimer’s Society.

Barbershop really is great fun to sing and we invite young men of all ages to come and join us – but don’t worry, experience is not necessary!

Lizzy’s Recipe Liz Hughes, ‘Our Lizzy Cooking’ Malvern

Pumpkin Soup

Perfect for those chilly autumn evenings. The chilli flakes give an extra warming kick.

Ready in 45 minutes. Serves 4

1 white onion finely chopped garlic clove crushed small pumpkin cut into slices ½ tsp chilli flakes 1 tsp bouillon powder ½ litre water 3-4 tbsp olive oil

1. Roast the pumpkin slices in olive oil in a hot oven for 30 minutes.

Cool slightly and remove the skin.

2. Put the onion and garlic in a large pan and sauté for five minutes. Add pumpkin, chilli flakes, bouillon powder and water and bring to the boil. Simmer for ten minutes.

3. Cool slightly and blend soup using a blender.

Reheat to serve.
