If you’re like me, you’ve probably had Shervin’s song “Baraye” or “Because of ” slowly and mournfully playing repeatedly in the back of your mind. It’s such a beautiful song, incredibly poignant and heartbreakingly sad. I hear the song in my mind and find myself reminiscing about life back in Iran.
But there’s one particular line that I can’t get out of my head —
Because of my sister, your sister, all our sisters.
In a few simple words, this precious lyric encapsulates so much of what we’re all going through these days as Iranians. The fear we share for our families. For those nearest and dearest. For those at home. For those who are vulnerable. For those who are powerless. For those who dream of a simple ideal we sometimes take for granted — the freedom to be ourselves.
So many of us are dreaming of a better future for Iran. Because we have to tear down our old foolish ways.
At the same time, we know the road to that future is fraught with danger and a palpable fear of the unknown. But there is one particular element of this malaise that we can all agree on — that women (my sister, your sister, all our sisters) are taking on the mantle of the brave warrior, breaking down clichés, forcing the issue and making change a real and true possibility. Those women who’ve had no voice have found their voice, and we can track it straight back to a very brave young woman who sacrificed everything to be an agent of change, Mahsa Amini. Her bravery is a testament to the true spirit of Persian people around the globe. Fierce. Opinionated. Smart. Educated. Equal.
I never, ever dreamed that Aleph magazine could act as a vehicle to take on tough political issues. But with the current situation in Iran, I really had no choice. It was always planned to be a light, airy luxury lifestyle publication for Persian Canadians. A taste of the good life. But I’m sure most of you would agree that the good life for Persians worldwide has a bitter taste to it. It’s unavoidable.
I would like to thank all of our brave and talented creators, contributors, artists, and producers for delivering a beautiful and genuinely thoughtful issue that pushed the boundaries of comfort for us all. I would also like to thank our advertisers for supporting us through what can only be described as an identity crisis. Maybe it’s temporary. I hope so. But mostly, I would like to thank you, the reader, for your continued support of this unique publication that is wholly and completely a labour of love. This issue of Aleph magazine is dedicated to the life and legacy of true heroes, Iranian women. I hope you will all join me in remembering the extent of their sacrifice and their bold vision for freedom.

A road trip like no other, Aleph’s Business Development Manager tells us all about it!Photo by Porsche Canada
Quite simply – it was an amazing experience. I know the word is overused, but in this case, ‘amazing’ is ultimately, exactly what it was.
I felt completely exhilarated after completing the four-day road trip I took part of in September of this year. Porsche created the ultimate British Columbia guided driving tour for a small group of auto enthusiasts, winding the participants through 1,160 kilometres of highways and roads that show off the handling, smooth drive, and bold energy the brand is known for. Truly a bucket list trip, with every detail planned to a T. Or should we say planned to a ‘P’ - for Porsche?
I met with the Porsche professional team and other eager participants at Fairmont Vancouver Airport hotel on day-one, where our driving program both started and finished. We met our two instructors who divided us into two groups. Each instructor was to lead a convoy of Porsche 911’s throughout the entire trip, and every vehicle had a walkie talkie for easy communication between us and our expert Porsche guides, which was a fun and practical safety addition to the experience.
When we were each assigned our vehicle, my jaw dropped when I was tossed the keys to a Carmine Red 911 Carrera 4S. Was this
my ultimate dream car? Absolutely. The classic, timeless 911 is synonymous with sport driving. If you love to drive, this is your car. The 4S has all the bells and whistles, including the twinturbo horizontally opposed engine, all-wheel drive, a powerful transmission, exceptional braking system, and intuitive controls that are all designed for increased performance.
Sliding in behind the wheel of this powerful and pristine work of automobile-art, I was super-stoked to drive to our first destination. But what is a destination without that elusive journey to get there? In our case, it was the Sea-to-Sky Highway enroute to Whistler, BC, with a carefully curated plan for stops along the way. I immediately noticed the luxury and comfort of the 911 sport seats when I settled in, and once I began driving, I could feel them support me during cornering and some tricky maneuvering on this road. Increased confidence improves performance as a driver when you feel your car hugging you, while you hug the road. At times I felt like I was starring in my own action movie, where I was the leading man, outsmarting the bad guys in a car chase where my expert highly honed manoeuvring skills were on full display, in a gorgeous setting of course. Well. A guy can dream, can’t he?
The highlights of this particular roadway are the winding twists and turns along this famous coastal highway, the jaw-dropping scenery with both ocean and mountain views, and that unmistakable scent of fresh BC air. Pine, cedar and the sea. I couldn’t help but crack the windows to let every one of my senses take part in this driving experience. Spectacular. There is a reason why so many automobile TV commercials are shot on the Sea to Sky Highway. An aerial view of a car rolling along it shows off our beautiful province while inspiring any driver, to simply want to drive this.
Carving our way along it on a bluebird day, our first stop was the Sea to Sky Gondola. A quick trip up and we were at the mountain top, some 885 metres above sea level with a stop-in-your-tracks view. There were photo opportunities aplenty, and then we were off to Fergie’s in Squamish for a nice lunch. Back in our 911’s we drive onward to the Four Seasons Resort Whistler, one of the nicest luxury properties in the Village.
After check-in, we met with the team and discussed tomorrow’s plan over dinner at Sidecut Steakhouse. We had such a diverse group, with folks from Mexico City, Chile, China, Los Angeles and Toronto. Chatting over cocktails and a fabulous meal began our bond, and our shared excitement over the trip and the opportunity to drive such exceptional cars sealed it. We all
couldn’t wait to hit the road again tomorrow. We were just getting started, and the excitement of our group was nothing short of contagious.
Day-two, a quick breakfast and we were aiming towards BC’s interior along the famed Duffey Lake Road, also known as part of Highway 99. Very scenic and less travelled, this road is open year-round. Tucked into BC’s glorious Coast Mountains, the road is 98 km long from Pemberton (just north of Whistler) to Lillooet. There are no gas stations (so prepare to fuel up in Whistler prior), plenty of fun hairpin turns, steep drops, and for me, steering my Porsche 911 through this section of our planned route was the highlight of the trip.
The car handled incredibly, and the Duffey Lake Road gave me the opportunity to experiment a little with speed and turning, even at 220 kilometres an hour. No commercial traffic means not having to navigate around huge trucks, and the steep climbs and descents of the road showed off the Porsche’s superior handling. The steering was beautifully responsive, there was no drift, and the perma-grin on my face only faded when it was time to tuck into our delicious lunch at the picturesque Tobiano Golf Course in Kamloops.
Back behind the wheel, we convoyed to Vernon via Highway 1, which is a four-lane divided highway that has been upgraded in the last few years. Fast and smooth, with some big commercial vehicles and trucks, this nice, divided highway led us to Highway 97 where we took the turnoff to Vernon. This part of our drive was very winding and much slower, with the road only one-way in each direction, plus it was easy to get stuck behind tractors on occasion. For me, driving a Porsche isn’t just about speed however, and this section of the journey gave me the opportunity to appreciate the quiet and settle back into the luxurious comfort of the interior.
In Vernon, we checked into the Sparkling Hill Resort and Spa, the European-style Swarovski crystal themed hotel. Kicking back at the KurSpa was as revitalizing and relaxing as only a steam and sauna can do, followed by a wonderful dinner and a good night’s sleep, I dreamt of tomorrow’s next leg of the trip. How on earth would Porsche top these two already fantastic days?
The next morning, day-three, we drove towards Penticton via Highway 97 through the Okanagan Valley, with its sprawling fruit orchards and miles of wineries and vineyards. The road just seemed to rise up and meet my wheels, no matter what kind of terrain, speed or conditions. I felt relaxed, safe, and excited,
all at the same time. Is there a better word than ‘smooth’ when it comes to how this drive felt? Somehow, that descriptor just doesn’t seem worthy enough for the velvety glide that was my experience.
We reached Peachland around lunchtime and were ready for a nice meal. Porsche certainly knows how to impress when it comes to luxury experiences, and they literally whisked us away by helicopter no less to Fitzpatrick Family Vineyards for lunch. Unbelievable.
Next? Onward to Spirit Ridge Resort in Osoyoos via Highway 97, located in Canada’s only desert, and where we would stay for our final evening. Located on a winery with gorgeous views overlooking the hills including Anarchist Mountain, we might have had to be dragged next morning to leave such a fine destination. But the dangling keys of our Porsche 911’s were too tempting to ignore or delay; we were here to drive after all. And drive we did. Day-four, we headed via Crowsnest (Highway 3) up the Similkameen River Valley. The straight sections allowed for some serious test-driving speed and that wind-in-your-hair feeling. Gaining elevations, twisty turning roads, and travelling through Manning Park and its North Cascades Mountains was a great opportunity to really feel the handling in the high terrain. Since this road is wide and fast plus has those gentle curves for optimal road hugging, it was hard not to just laugh out loud at times. Driving a Porsche can make you feel just like a kid again, it’s that much fun.
I steered my vehicle through Hope and then dropped steeply down, carrying onward to the Sandpiper Resort in Harrison. With its waterfront views of Harrison River, lunch was both scenic and delicious. Our final leg of the journey followed; the drive back to YVR. I savoured every moment of the drive though, knowing I’d soon be handing back those keys and wrapping up my experience. Instead of feeling even just the slightest bit sad that it was soon to be over, I was floating with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity I was offered.
This Porsche Travel Experience package comes in at what you would expect, a bucket-list price tag. At $8,695 per person + tax, it is indeed a luxurious, perhaps once-in-a-lifetime splurge. But as the saying goes, we’re worth it.
“Porsche certainly knows how to impress when it comes to luxury experiences.”
Recreated from a real photo of a girl dancing in front of Azadi square without compulsory Hijab as a civil disobediace against desregard of human rights by the regim in Iran.
P.S. The term “Azadi” means “freedom”
In 1979, Iranians voted in a national referendum for a new theocratic-republican constitution. This referendum drove the Shah from power officially, leading to the Islamic republic’s establishment in 1979. However, the revolution ended both the westernization and modernization of Iran.
And there were consequences. Iran was alienated from the West, and women’s rights were drastically reduced. The monarchy was abolished, and religious leaders took longterm government control. Since 1979 there have been many protests challenging the strict religious tenants of the new regime. Many Iranians said, “This is not what we signed up for.” But the demonstrations were shut down every time, and thousands were executed.
Now, 44 years later, the women of Iran are daring to imagine a new future for themselves and the entire country. Since September 2022, women and men alike have taken to the streets to protest the Islamic Republic’s oppressive government. It started with the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who was arrested by morality police in Tehran on September 13, 2022, for allegedly violating Iran’s strict rules requiring women to cover their hair with a hijab or headscarf.
Mahsa’s death ignited a fire in the heart of the nation. Since then, so much has happened. #MahsaAmini has become a code word for rebellious Iranians. Mahsa has become a symbol of liberty. “Woman life freedom” is the new rallying cry of dissent.
Iran has 87 million people, and over half of them are women. The fact is, 97%percent of these women are literate, and more than 60% are university educated. Never before have so many women been educated as professionals, including journalists, doctors, lawyers, engineers, and artists. Despite this fact, women and girls get treated as secondclass citizens. And this simple fact is at the heart of the biggest women-led revolution in the world. Suppress intelligent people for four decades, and madness happens. Women are rising and saying, “enough is enough!”
An iconic movement against not only the compulsory Hijab but also all the human right violations in Iran during the last 44 years. The movement has been practised by many people around the world including celebrities, activists, and well-known characters in politics in solidarity with the people of Iran.
Women in Iran face discrimination in law, marriage and divorce, inheritance, child custody, nationality and international travel. This movement goes way beyond the mandatory hijab law — it’s about gender apartheid. It’s about the complete lack of free expression, unfair trials, forced confessions, killings, torture, corruption and theocracy. Courage is at the heart of the movement. Iranian women are leading the charge, and the world is taking notice. In fact, Iranian women made the cover of the December issue of Time magazine as “Heroes of the Year.” This heroism has also inspired men and united a nation — and the whole world is watching.
As we enter the 5th month of dissent, nationwide protests continue strong in Iran despite nearly hundreds of people (including children) killed and thousands of protestors detained, threatened, executed and massacred. In certain parts of Iran, people are fighting with empty hands.
The body of the model is covered with some of the trending hashtags related to the recent revolutionary movement happening in Iran and are mostly the names of women, men and children who got killed by the brutal regime.
Out of Iran’s roughly 87 million population, 60% are young Gen Y and Z’s on the streets fighting. They are the same people who saw the protests and killings of 2009 (as children) and the protests and killings in 2019 (in their teens). They’ve been born into a world of information and have communication technology at their fingertips. Today they are sending over a million tweets an hour in support of their sister #MahsaAmini. That is a vast number of educated, well-informed people who feel they have nothing to lose.
This time, though, there is much international attention, and the world is rising to show solidarity with the movement.
Shervin’s song “Baraye” or “Because of” is the movement’s anthem. He created the song from a series of other people’s tweets that describe their personal reasons why they don’t want the current regime in power anymore. Specifically, the violation of fundamental human rights over the past 44 years. The song was nominated for the Grammy Awards under a new special merit category which honours songs dedicated to social change. Musicians worldwide sing “Baraye” on every stage, including Coldplay in Buenos Aires in 2022. Iranians around the world are participating in protests week after week to show solidarity. Iranian actresses show their solidarity by unveiling their hijab. Iranian athletes stay silent when they are supposed to sing the national anthem, including during the World Cup.
Recreated from a real photo of a girl getting ready to join the protests that has become viral on social media. Many people have practised this action to show their support of the protests.
Celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Roger Waters, Tony Robins, Ellen DeGeneres and more showed their support and solidarity with Iran. Women leaders globally, including Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Laura Bush and more, signed a letter calling for the United Nations to remove the Islamic Republic of Iran from the UN Commission on the Status of Women. Politicians internationally, one by one, began making official statements in support of the uprising. Major news channels like CNN started investigating and releasing brutal confessions and stories about the regime’s crimes. The United Nations had finally heard all of the voices. They held a special session on Iran for the first time in its history, with the majority of its board voting to condemn them for human rights violations in Iran and establishing a fact-finding mission to investigate the regime’s crimes for the first time.
The protests continue for the roughly 8 million Iranians living abroad, including those in Canada. This is more than a movement. It’s a revolution — rooted in liberation, freedom and the courageous hearts of women.
I believe I sense the gratifying scent of victory.
Long live women, long live freedom, and long live Iran.

As the plane descend through the clouds, the vast coastline appears, sun-kissed and drenched in the blue, blue waters of the Sea of Cortez at the point it joins the Pacific Ocean. My wife Roya and I were guests of the Los Cabos Tourism Board and Mexico Tourism; invited to experience this exotic locale for the next five days. As soon as we land, we are picked up by a private driver to our home for the next week, the Corazon Cabo Resort & Spa.
We are about to embark on a luxury getaway through the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. Once home to pirates and explorers, today, it is a historically rich, vibrant destination where people from all over the world visit to enjoy the sunny weather and equally warm culture. Considered one of Mexico’s fastest growing tourist centres, breathtaking kilometer after kilometer of oceanfront playground separates Baja’s two cape towns — one lively, the other more laidback.
LA
Soon, we arrive to Cabos’ newest luxury resort, the Corazón Cabo Resort & Spa. Imagine a resort where you have commanding views of the coveted shores of Medona Beach, the area’s only swimmable white sandy beach, and your suite is a haven of luxury. As soon as we entered the expansive lush lobby, we are captivated by the airy, modern design and the historical Mexican artworks and sculptures produced by local artists, many of which depict the area’s diverse wildlife.
Our deluxe Infinity King Ocean View, with hot tub on the balcony, offered us a combination of sweeping ocean views and uncompromising splendor. Inside our spacious coastal retreat was a soothing palette of soft pastels and unparalleled comfort, while the five-star bathroom enhanced the feel of a getaway escape. It was the perfect stay for those, like us, looking for excellence in everything from the accommodations, amenities and cuisine.
It’s as if time stood still here. As we walked the quiet streets of this quaint town and take in its 18th century Spanish colonial architecture and picturesque central plaza, there are a number of boutiques and art shops beckoning us in. A tour of the Mission San Jose del Cabo (circa 1730) in the epicenter of the historic square, is not to be missed.
One of the regions most iconic landmarks is the Arch and it is definitely worth a visit. A short boat ride away, and before long we caught sight of hundreds of sea lions frolicking in the waters or lazily sunning themselves on the rocks. This sea lion colony attracts thousands of visitors each year and for good reason, it is a sight to behold. However, the distinctive Cabo San Lucas primary draw is the rugged El Arco, the arch rock formation at the tip of the Baja Peninsula.
We soon land at Lover’s Beach. The clear azure water is one of the best and safest snorkeling spots in Cabo San Lucas. With its colourful coral-coated rocks, we bob past other snorkellers around the base of the rocks. We are rewarded with a kaleidoscope of marine life including schools of green and blue parrot fish and striped sergeant major fish.
Many thrilling adventure water sports abound: Cabo is renowned for its water sports. We took part in several, including swimming with whale sharks, whale-watching, parasailing, and exploring the waters in a glass-bottomed boat.
There are few experiences out there quite like swimming with whale sharks in Cabo San Lucas. These sharks are beautiful and
breathtaking, and definitely worth getting into your bathing suite for. From October to April, are the best months to observe up close and personal these gentle, calm fish as they bask in the warm waters nearby.
Each year, thousands of humpback whales migrate from their Arctic feeding grounds to the warm waters of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula to mate and give birth. For whale watching enthusiasts, there is nothing quite as thrilling as capturing these majestic mammals as they leap almost fully out of the water before splashing back down again. P.S. You will find plenty of operators in Cabo San Lucas offering whale watching tours.
Parasailing is one of the best, most accessible ways to get up into the air to capture the sheer beauty of Los Cabos’ shoreline - an extraordinary contrast of ochre landforms and turquoise ocean that are attached to the jagged islands and cliffs of Land’s End, or the sandy stretches of Medano Beach. Harnessed into a special parachute-like canopy, Cabo San Lucas is home to some excellent parasailing adventures.
Nothing quite defines a city like a thriving culinary scene. When it comes to diverse gastronomic experiences, this Mexican playground plays host to a vibrant restaurant landscape. Here are two of many that we highly recommend.
Garnering rave reviews, one night we found our way to The Italian Job Restaurant & Pizza. The Italian Job is a fine dining destination; one that delights all of your senses. Open air and ocean facing, we are immediately enchanted by the dining room’s alfresco ceiling with its rustic wood beams, green plants festooned with ambient lighting and the authentic wood burning pizza oven. As any Italian food lover knows, there’s nothing better than a steaming bowl of al dente pasta, or a slice of the country’s national treasures, the pizza. Staying true to Italy’s rich gastronomic tradition, the executive chef/ owner Fabrizio sources the finest, freshest Italian specialty items to hand craft each dish to perfection.
Another absolute gem is the upscale Edith’s Restaurante. Ranked one of the best five restaurants in Mexico, Edith’s will enchant you with it’s rustic Californiano decoration and warm, relaxing atmosphere with colonial touches. The menu is a vibrant fusion of the Cuisine of Baja California and its Guerreran flair. Edith’s is famous for its selection of steaks and seafood showcasing local ingredients. Boasting stunning views of Medano Beach and the world-famous Arch of Cabo San Lucas, the restaurant merges traditional Mexican architecture, candle lights and palapas, which set the tone for an unforgettable culinary experience.
Los Cabos combines friendly residents, mouth watering cuisine, superb accommodations, activities and warm weather, yet still manages to retain something of a small-town feel. Once you’ve experienced it, I think you’ll agree that Los Cabos is a true gem worth a second visit. To book your trip or for more information, visit www.visitloscabos.travel.

By the time the testing phase has been completed, the two-door, four-seater Spectre will have driven 2.5 million kilometres across the globe in a wide array of extreme climatic conditions. So far, Rolls-Royce is saying only that its Spectre has a drag coefficient of 0.25, making it the company’s most aerodynamic vehicle.
Automotive experts predict that buyers of the Spectre will have a selection of customizable packages offered through Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke design service, and that its electric powertrain will likely contain two or more electric motors and a large, 700kg battery pack that will be integrated into its architecture. What kind of range that battery will yield remains a mystery but according to reports, the vehicle’s suspension system will be able to ‘read’ the road surface quality and make necessary adjustments ahead of time.
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars chief executive Torsten Muller-Otvos commented that the Spectre’s “electrics are silent, they’re torquey, they’re powerful,” and that driving the vehicle will feel like “a private jet taking off.”
The Spectre is the first electric vehicle for RollsRoyce, but not the last. The company announced in September 2021 that its gas-powered fleet will be fully replaced with electric vehicles by 2030.

Inside, there’s a combination of signature Rolls-Royce luxury and ample space at every turn. In the second row two rear configurations are offered: individual seats or lounge seats. The lounge seat can accommodate three while the individual seats fit two. The rear seats are also foldable in a number of configurations.
Rolls-Royce has long been known for opulence, power, tradition and luxury taken to the extreme. For years considered the gold standard in hyper luxury vehicles, its first all-wheel-drive Sport Utility Vehicle adheres to the core principles on which Rolls Royce’s reputation is based.
The Cullinan – named for the Cullinan diamond, the largest gemquality rough diamond ever discovered, is a 6,000-pound SUV that has automotive experts struggling to find new descriptors for its lavish accoutrements and powerful dynamics. It features a unique aluminum spaceframe and new Rolls-Royce chassis technology. The Black Badge Cullinan, one of the packages available in this SUV, has a 6.75-liter V12 engine. It boasts 592 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, which is quite the power boost. In layman terms, that means that in just 4.5 seconds it can zoom smoothly and effortlessly from zero to 60 miles per hour, - which is a feat for a car of this weight. It can reach a top speed of 155 miles per hour.
But it’s also super-quiet, thanks to its combination of sounddeadening material, double-thick glass and foam-filled tires. These features reduce the volume of the V12 engine and reduce the noise of other sounds emanating from outside the vehicle. For the driver and passengers, that means the vehicle’s interior remains quiet and serene.
The Cullinan features a sport drive setting that is engaged by pressing the “Low” button on the gear stalk. Use this setting and you feel an immediate improvement in throttle response for the eight-speed automatic transmission. Press the “Off Road Button” and you engage all wheel drive, which means the vehicle’s suspension raises by 40mm and brake and throttle increase in sensitivity. The Cullinan’s larger set of brake discs means it comes to a standstill faster, too.
In the individual seat configuration, the rear seats are divided by a fixed rear centre console that incorporates a drinks cabinet featuring a pair of drinks decanters (one refrigerated and the other at room temperature – because you never know quite what you’ll want at any one time!), whisky glasses and champagne flutes. Picnic tables can be electronically deployed in case you’re in the mood for a snack, and each passenger in the rear seats gets a television screen and a thick lambswool floor mat – the kind that might tempt you to remove your shoes.
Look up and the starlight roof lining imitates the night sky. Look around and you inhale the sleek elegance of the boxgrain leather and wood trim. Relax into the seats and activate the soothing massage function, and you might never want to emerge. And hit the stereo – Rolls-Royce bespoke audio, and you’re transported. The sound is that good.
Beyond comfort, the Cullinan is a smart car. It contains intelligent cameras that scan the road, automatically adjusting the suspension to acceleration and steering to ensure control. It’s a big car, for sure, but the car experts are unanimous that it’s remarkably agile, exacting, responsive and stable for its size. Furthermore, they say, it delivers an unsurpassed ride quality that makes you feel as if you’re floating over the road. Rolls Royce calls that the “enhanced magic carpet ride sensation.”
With its rectangular front grille, the Cullinan has an imposing, unmistakable presence. But it’s also incredibly practical. The interior is roomy, while the trunk has 19.7 cubic feet of cargo space – and up to 66 cubic feet if you fold the lounge bench seats. Owners will enjoy the many thoughtful features, like the glass partition that separates the passenger cabin from the luggage compartment, ensuring that the temperature and volume in the cabin is unaffected even when the luggage compartment is open.
If your budget accommodates a Rolls-Royce, you likely already know that when you buy one you get an incredible combination of performance, high-level luxury, comfort and refinement. The Cullinan nails these qualities in an SUV. In the unminced words of Müller-Ötvös: “Cullinan is luxury in its purest form blended with perfect practicality and off-road capability. Effortless, Everywhere is not just the promise behind Cullinan. It’s the fact.”
Imagine you’re walking down the street on a warm, sunny day. Out of the corner of your eye, blowing in the wind, you spot a piece of paper. As you squint your eyes to get a better look–you realize it’s a $100 bill! What luck!
Here’s the core question of behavioral finance: do you
Go splurge on a lobster dinner from the best restaurant in town or Count your lucky stars that you have an extra $100, and invest it wisely?
Although this is a fairly simple example, it speaks to the small decisions that we make that end up becoming the foundation of our financial futures.
Behavioral finance is looking at psychological factors that influence investor decisions in financial markets, and their interpretation of informational inputs.
There is a reason that most of the world’s richest people DON’T make their financial decisions on their own. Yes, even Warren Buffet has his partner Charlie Munger to bounce his investment decisions off of. That’s because even the greatest investors of all time are often victims of their behavioral biases.
A certified financial planner is your Charlie Munger. They can analyze your financial prospects from a completely neutral, and financially educated, point of view. A good certified financial planner knows what to look for in their clients’ behavioral biases and can help them steer clear of unwise financial decisions made based upon those biases.
In this article, I will talk about 3 common behavioural mental biases and how they affect your financial decision.
In a baseball game, the objective is to win, not to avoid losing. Too many investors base their investment decision on what is called Loss Aversion. If you play to NOT lose, you’ll lose.
Investing your money comes with a certain level of inherent risk. Every investor’s risk tolerance is their own decision to make, however being TOO risk averse can actually be incredibly detrimental to your portfolio. Doing things like stashing money in a savings account and watching it get eaten away by inflation,
instead of investing that money–this is a recipe for failure.
How a CFP Can Help A certified financial planner helps you make calculated risks and works to balance your portfolio with some investments that are slightly riskier, and some that are less so.
This one has a bit of overlap with overconfidence bias, but is slightly different in how it can creep in. Anchoring bias is a tendency to overvalue a single piece of information, rather than looking at the entire, complex, investment scenario. Sound investments are made upon multiple pillars of information. For instance, many investors will latch onto an early price target of theirs, causing them to hold onto a particular security for far too long, crushing their potential gains into the dirt.
How a CFP Can Help A CFP takes the time to understand the multitude of angles before committing to an investment and will help you as an investor adapt your strategies to new information in a world that is constantly in flux.
While we often feel a sense of safety following the herd, that doesn’t mean our money is safe doing so. Especially with the advent of trading apps for our smartphones, more and more investors are falling into the herd behavior trap, following their friends and coworkers into risky or foolhardy investment decisions. There’s an old saying that really rings true: “If your friends jumped off a bridge, would you do it too?”
How a CFP Can Help When you’ve been investing long enough, you begin to spot the weak points–which are often apparent–in the investment strategies of friends, family, and other acquaintances. A CFP can help you steer clear of these herd mentality landmines.
Knowing and understanding what biases might negatively impact our financial decisions is crucial to your development as an investor. What lies beyond them is a world of investment possibilities that your Certified Financial Planner can help you decipher–while prospering in any market conditions.
What’s your definition of influencer? Do you see yourself as an influencer?
An influencer is someone that has the ability to affect others. The more someone trust you, in your particular area of expertise, the stronger your persuasion over their thought processes or purchase decisions. I do see myself as an influencer in terms of beauty/ fashion and travel. It was a conscientious commitment to share all of my life’s experiences on social media to give followers’ ideas and inspiration on clothing, make-up, hair and beautiful destinations to visit. But with that said, I could not proclaim myself ‘an influencer.’ That’s a title given to you by others, not a label that you can tag on yourself.
Did you always want to be the Mahlagha Jaberi you are, and how does it feel to be in front?
I had no plan or design on who Mahlagha Jaberi would become. The progression happened naturally as I developed over the years from all of my work experiences and of course, growing and maturing as a person. I have been blessed throughout my journey and will always be grateful for it.

Tell us about your huge social media success and what are you doing to keep it going and growing even more?
I am thankful for all of my loyal fans across the world. They have supported me from the beginning and have continued to support me. They are the reason for my social media success and they are the reason why I keep going. I am inspired to provide them with fresh and genuine narratives. I like to create content, while I am “in the moment and on the go.” It gives my fans an authentic view of my life and how I see the world.
What do you think is the secret to having a successful social media presence?
The secret is to be yourself. Be real, authentic and genuine. If you post your true self, then people can decide if they love it or not. Once you know yourself, have a consistent online presence, but don’t overwhelm your fans. Balance is key.
You are followed by so many people. How do you feel about that pressure of always doing the right thing and encouraging people to follow their dreams?
That’s a great question. I do not feel pressure, because I am being my genuine self. I do what I naturally want, feel and love. The pressure comes if you are pretending to be a certain person, and it won’t work or last, because it won’t feel right within you. I am a big advocate for people to follow their dreams. I followed mine and continue to follow mine. When you work hard and reach your goal(s), the exhilarating feelings are unexplainable. I want others to experience that, so I continuously encourage people to go after their dreams.
How do you use the power of social media to connect to different age groups with different cultural backgrounds?
I don’t have a specific plan or method that I use to connect. I simply put a genuine version of myself out there and if people feel a connection with me, they join. The other possible explanation is because I enjoy a variety of different things, whether it is food, people, or places. This might be another reason why people gravitate to me, because of my varied interests that aligns with theirs.
What would you say are the greatest lesson(s) you have learned so far?
I have learned to be more accepting of what happens in life, positive or negative. To stop questioning the things that don’t work and appreciate even the smallest things. The more accepting I am, the more open I become to allow positivity to flow.
I bet you get millions of it, but what are the best and worst Instagram DM pickup lines you received so far?
Hahaha, I don’t focus on the DM pickup lines, because I am responding to work requests. I am sure there are a lot of interesting things being said on there. Maybe some marriage proposals, too, lol.
What is next for Mahlagha Jaberi in 2023?
To launch my brand and dream product. A goal that I have initiated and I am very devoted to realizing.
How would your best friend describe you? Genuine and funny.
How would you describe yourself in 5 words? Creative, goofy, calm, spiritual, and passionate.
What is your own definition of happiness? Happiness is seeing my mom smile. To give her everything is what makes me happy.
What makes you smile and what scares you the most? Finding true love with an emotional connection and seeing my family happy, makes me smile. The loss of loved ones, friends and family would scare me the most.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why? Elon Musk. He is making a difference by creating better and innovative technology.
Best advice ever given? To use adversity as an opportunity. Every loss leads to an opportunity, and every adversity leads to new possibilities and to trust your instincts. What good is intuition if you let second-guessing drown it out?
The worst enemy of success is self-doubt.

It is certified by the Canadian Government, vetted and trusted by thousands of clients, and consistently achieves 100% satisfaction. We are proud of a steady stream of Iranian clients with NO failure to date.
ANYVISA is different from other immigration companies. What is the secret of your success?

Secondly, it is our team who are devoting their professional expertise, energy and care to each client. Each person matters. Each case is different. With our practice of over 25 years and thousands of processed clients, we have vast experience that is above all others.
What about immigration from Iran, especially considering the current situation?
Unlike many law firms that shy away from Iranian clientele, we have worked closely with Iranian clients for the past few years and have been very fortunate to land many of them in Canada. The current situation in Iran affects people’s lives more than ever, and we at ANYVISA observe increased demand from Iranians – from Iran, from all over the world.
What program do Iranians mostly choose to immigrate to Canada?
Iranians are very educated, very business-oriented and very diligent. That fits the Start-up Visa Program perfectly. It is very appealing to Iranians because it is fairly affordable and famous for its fast processing. Speaking about the process itself, it is very important to mention that while applying for their Permanent Residency, applicants can apply for their Work Permits right away, allowing them to enter Canada way sooner and bring their families too. With the current difficult situation in Iran, I think it may be a very good time to consider this program to relocate to Canada.
Is it possible to meet the Start-Up Visa Program requirements for those who are currently in Iran?
Absolutely! You must have an innovative idea for this program, but no educational or business experience is necessary. Also, Start-Up Visa requires a very low English language proficiency. The most significant advantage is that you don’t need proof of funds.
People value what we do!
How can Iranian clients reach you?
We have an extremely fast and effective onboarding process. After the Free Pre-Assessment process, we privately discuss every situation during our in-depth Business Consultation, answer all the questions and guide our clients through the process.

“I love using my platform to show women they don’t have to be one thing, you can be a mom and still be fit, you can own businesses while doing it all.” — Yalda says.
Who is the most inspirational person to you?
I get inspired very easily. I love looking for inspiration, i love being open to inspiration and that’s why I don’t have a specific person who inspires me, I find inspiration in a lot of people.
Do you see yourself as an influencer? And how do you feel about the influencer title?
I don’t feel I’m an influencer, it has just become a title for most of us who have a large following. I just share my life and share what I think can benefit my viewers and inspire and motivate them to be the best version of themselves. I love using my platform to show women they don’t have to be one thing, you can be a mom and still be fit, you can own businesses while doing it all.
se-jewels.com
What motivated you to run your own business, Sé Jewelry?
My dad has been in the gold and diamond industry for over 40 years, so I definitely did get inspired by him. The right time and opportunity presented itself with one of my friends and the business bloomed so effortlessly. When you love something so much just trust in the timing and things fall in to place perfectly.
I wanted to do something with jewellery with my dad 10 years ago, and I’m so glad that I didn’t at the time, because it simply wasn’t the right time.
Who would you like to give credit to for your success?
My husband helped me and pushed me a lot to just get out there and not be hesitant. Another influencer Ascia also really helped me as she would share pictures of us together and that helped kick off my social media journey.
What is the biggest failure that significantly changed your life?
I’ve started a couple of businesses in the past that simply didn’t work out. And I had to stop being so hard on myself and accept the fact that there will always be failures and I can always learn from those experiences. And I have definitely learned a lot. So I take those lessons with me when I’m starting something new.
What is the one thing that you always keep in your mind while preparing your content? Do you know the demographics of your followers?
I do know the demographics and I like sharing true genuine content. That’s the only way I work. I also know that my viewers know me so well as most of them have been supporting me for years and vice versa, so I share what I know they like to see.
What is your favorite thing about what you do?
My favorite thing about what I do is the fact that I meet so many different people from all around the world, and I’ve made friends with so many people online. I love that I get to connect with so many women who share the same interests and who love what I’m putting out there on social media. It encourages me to keep going.
What are the main challenges of being a mother, a business woman, a dedicated gym-goer, and an active influencer all at the same time?
One challenge I would say is managing my time. It’s something I must constantly work on, learning to master time management.
Your husband, Hassan, is from Kuwait. No doubt that you have many Kuwaiti followers. Have you found similarities between the two cultures? Any challenges connecting with them?
I wouldn’t say there are challenges v connecting with the different cultures because my husband and I both love and embrace our different cultures and backgrounds and we make sure to celebrate both. Especially that our kids are half Iranian half Kuwaiti. It’s beautiful because we get to celebrate the best of both worlds.
What is next for Yalda Golsharifi in 2023?
We shall wait and see!
How would your best friend describe you?
I just asked her and she said “Most authentic and genuine soul. Giving and loving yet feisty when needed to protect her loved ones” lol
How would you describe yourself in 5 words?
Stubborn, determined, empathic, calm and goal driven
What is your own definition of happiness?
Being able to fully accept and love every bit of where I am. I look at my surroundings and appreciate and live in gratitude.
What makes you smile and what scares you the most?
My kids definitely warm my heart. They’re my heart. What scares me the most is definitely the same as everyone’s fears- my family coming into harms way. I pray for their safety and protection always.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
Beyoncé! Lol I find her so inspirational. She seems so down to earth and shy but when she’s on stage she’s out of this world! Best advice ever given?
Every time I’ve gotten anxious or overwhelmed with work, my husband reminds me to just stop everything and take as long as I need to disconnect, calm down, rest, and take it easy. Absolutely NOTHING should make you anxious or stress you out. It’s not worth your health. So being able to have the power or strength to say ok I don’t need to do this now is definitely empowering and it makes me realize that you know what, I’ll do it when I’m feeling better and the result always turns out better than if I had done it while stressed and anxious.

RICHMOND 14100 Entertainment Blvd. BURNABY 5900 Kingsway SQUAMISH 39449 Queens Way VICTORIA 691 Allandale Road ALBERTA 2905 15 Ave, Wainwright MAPLE RIDGE 13090 Lilley DriveThere’s no question that it’s a long way to Echo Valley Ranch and Spa. Close to six hours’ drive from the Lower Mainland, you head north on the 99, a highway that takes you deep into the mountains well beyond Whistler and Pemberton. You leave the highway close to the Fraser River Canyon at the turnoff to Clinton, taking a dirt road peppered with small ranches for the last 45 minutes of the route. But once you get to the ranch in BC’s Cariboo country, the silence is otherworldly. A light breeze rustles the trees and a nearby creek bubbles softly, but apart from these soothing sounds there’s complete and utter stillness in the air. It’s a silence that invites you to calm your mind, absorb the peacefulness and rid yourself of the restless energy that’s so contagious in the city.
Located on a crest, Echo Valley overlooks sweeping views of Cariboo grasslands skirted by thick swaths of boreal forest. Hillsides descend into a creek surrounded by lush greenery, and between the Marble Mountains in the distance and the Fraser Canyon nearby, it’s a breathtaking location.
Ranch owners Norm and Nan Dove visited the area in 1994 and fell in love with it immediately. They bought all 160 acres right away and transformed the property from a small homestead into a luxurious, boutique ranch with cozy, log cabin-style accommodations. They built an airplane runway, a gym, an indoor swimming pool and a stable. And as the years passed they
added a wide selection of innovative activities and excursions for guests, bucket list that combined Cariboo wilderness pursuits with Thai-based spa treatments and gentle yoga.
First Nations’ artists who have created unique works of art on the building and landscape have recognized the distinct spirituality of the site. The Doves invited indigenous artists Michael Blackstock to carve living faces on the trees, and Theo Mahood to carve intricate wooden murals on the exterior of their Lookout Lodge. The art is a symbol of the Dove’s deep respect for the indigenous stewardship of the property, and a recognition of its spiritual aura.
The Cariboo is wildlife central, a region where bear sightings are common, bighorn sheep still roam the canyon and marmots feed nearby the lodge at dusk. The ranch is home to a range of domestic animals too: three border collies, six cats, 19 horses and Lucky, a massive pet swine who, unlike his late companion, avoided a near-death bear encounter, thus earning his name. The ranch chef handpicks vegetables and herbs from the verdant vegetable garden and hothouse, while eggs come straight from the chicken coop and pasture-raised ranch cattle are harvested for the beef.
Written by Lauren KramerEcho Valley Ranch is all-inclusive, and the range of activities is delivered one-on-one and personalized according to each guests’ preferences. Want to spend the day at the spa, enjoying one treatment after another? No problem. Prefer to venture out on foot, horseback or bike all day long? Easily arranged.
On my first evening on the ranch I headed to the pond with Darrel Nippard to try my hand at fly fishing. The water was writhing with rainbow trout and I figured it couldn’t be that hard to cast a line and catch a couple. Dusk was settling in and swallows swirled overhead as I cast and pulled in with the clumsiness of a newbie, repeatedly catching my hook in the weeds. Patiently, Nippard untangled the line, repeated the instructions and watched quietly until eventually I nabbed a fish, wrestling briefly with it before it broke free, disappearing beneath the surface.
Nippard, 54, is a former hermit who spent two years living in a hideout on the Cariboo’s Poison Mountain in 2006. During that solitary time he kept himself alive by hunting, fishing and harvesting wild onions, mushrooms and berries, life skills that made him the perfect candidate to lead ranch activities including archery, shooting, canyon guide and survivalist courses. Time with him is peppered with fascinating anecdotes of the area’s history, geography and the personalities who’ve carved a life in this remote region.
On a Canyon tour we drive together on a road full of switchbacks and sheer, vertical drops. Our destination is Cougar Point, a 3,800-foot precipice overlooking the Fraser River Canyon, BC’s version of the Grand Canyon. Scorched by fire in 2009, the mountain range is rejuvenating with fresh foliage growth. Nippard stops to sample wild raspberries, black currants and crabapples growing by the roadside as he recounts the history of gold panning on the river.
We walk to an overlook where he gestures at the handful of farms on the slopes alongside the river below. “Almost everyone out here lives off grid, farming cattle and using wind turbines for energy,” he notes. The landscape is magnificent in its rawness, one full of wildlife but equally full of harsh weather and unforgiving conditions. Most of the area farmers are seniors now, Nippard says sadly. How will a younger, city-raised generation of farmers ever manage to fill their shoes?
Nippard lived and breathed this land and knows it well. On our survivalist excursion he points out kiniki, a plant favoured for Indian tobacco, yarrow, a natural antihistamine, willow (“you boil it to treat headaches”) and mullein, whose soft leaves make a great substitute for toilet paper. I taste bitter, tiny soap berries filled with vitamin C (their boiled leaves are a natural laxative) and juniper berries, best chewed to stave off thirst if you’re lost in the bush.
Later that afternoon I spend a couple hours in the spa, surrendering to a Thai masseuse who leaves my body in a blissful state of relaxation. The next day I hop on an e-bike to explore the boreal forest, careening along trails fragranced by pine trees. It’s a blistering hot morning, so I hike down to the creek for a dip in the icy, fresh mountain water before saddling up for a horseback ride with Mike Christensen, ranch wrangler and general manager.
Before heading out on any guest ride, Mike leads a ‘horse acquaintance’ session, explaining how to establish leadership with a horse. “Horses are living, breathing animals and we believe that any ride needs to start with a relationship – it’s not like hopping on a bike,” he says. We start my session with Monty, a 19-year-old gelding, with exercises in trust and connection, and when we’ve nailed that, we head onto the Crown Land trail.
Crossing a small creek, our horses plod steadily uphill on a forest floor carpeted in moss. A grouse startles and flutters away with a
heavy beat of wings and a woodpecker chatters in the distance. Apart from this and the breath of our horses, the forest is still and the air thick with the hot, dry heat of August in the Cariboo.
