As we present the 8th issue of Aleph, our theme—Harmony in Contrast—explores the beautiful symphony that arises when diverse elements unite to create something truly magnificent. It’s a theme that resonates deeply not just in the content of this issue, but in the very essence of Aleph itself.
In life, as in art, contrasts do not have to be conflicting. Rather, they can complement each other, each enhancing the beauty and strength of the other. This principle is vividly embodied in the partnership that has shaped Aleph from its inception: my collaboration with my wife, who is not only my partner in life but also the Art Director of this magazine.
While I bring the business perspective—a focus on strategy, growth, and sustainability—she brings an artistic vision that infuses elegance and a refined aesthetic into every page of Aleph. Her creativity elevates our content, making each issue a work of art that goes beyond mere information to inspire and engage. This blend of business acumen and artistic flair is a perfect example of harmony in contrast, where two seemingly different approaches converge to create a successful and influential publication.
This issue is inspired by the dynamism that arises from such partnerships. You will find stories that illustrate the power of combining different cultures, culinary traditions, and design philosophies. Each article and feature is crafted to show how blending disparate elements can lead to innovation and beauty.
We also delve into personal stories of individuals who embody this theme. Entrepreneurs who merge cuttingedge technology with traditional crafts, artists who fuse Eastern and Western techniques, and culinary wizards who blend regional ingredients to create groundbreaking new dishes. These stories are not just narratives; they are testaments to the power of diversity and the magic of harmonious contrasts.
As you turn these pages, I hope you find not only enjoyment but also inspiration. May the stories of harmony in contrast encourage you to seek out and celebrate the diverse elements in your own lives, finding beauty in the blend.
In keeping with this theme, I owe a debt of gratitude to my wife, Roya Momeni, whose artistic vision continually inspires not just me but all who engage with Aleph. Her touch transforms our magazine into not just a publication, but a canvas where business and art dance in delightful harmony.
Thank you for joining us on this journey. As always, we look forward to hearing your thoughts and stories, as it is your insight and feedback that help shape our future issues.

The cover of this issue showcases the stunning Mahlagha Jaberi, the Iranian-American model. In line with the magazine’s theme, ‘The Harmony of Contrast,’ we depicted Mahlagha as a symbol of femininity, dressed in a masculine outfit designed by SuGolden Design. This deliberate contrast not only accentuates the theme but also exemplifies flawless harmony. Our choice of this theme was driven by the belief that embracing the beautiful differences in our lives can lead to enhancement and enrichment.

1) Life Insurance is Only Useful After My Death Fact — Life insurance is a risk management tool. Risk must not only be associated with dying but also with living too long. Some Insurance policies can help you secure your financial future. You can build an asset inside of your insurance policy to make you financially independent during retirement, cover medical expenses, or build your wealth for flexible usage. You will always benefit from a timely investment in the right insurance product basis your needs and your financial gaols.
2) My Company Covers Me, So I Don’t Need Another Policy Fact — Your employer covers you only till you are employed with the company. The policy gets terminated once you leave or retire. Employee insurance may be sufficient when you are young, healthy, and without responsibilities. However, it won’t be enough to cover your future family’s needs like children’s education, marriage, medical emergencies of aging parents, the rising cost of living, and so on.
It is advisable to supplement your employer-provided coverage with another insurance policy that is customized to your future needs. Take a policy that can support you financially all through your living years as well as keep your loved ones financially secure in case something were to happen to you.
3) Why Do I Need Insurance If I am Young, Single and Healthy Fact — Life insurance is one product that cannot be bought when needed. It needs to be bought for a time when you need it. It is a very simple adage “You cannot insure a building under fire”. It must be bought much before you need it and there are
many reasons for this. Additionally, the best time to purchase a life insurance policy is when you are young and healthy since the premiums are lower and you can have a high life cover at very low premiums.
4) Claim Settlement is a Hassle and the Insurance Company Can Deny the Payout
Fact — An insurance company will pay claims on policies in existence. That is the fundamental purpose of the company. In this context, it is important to remember that the Insurance policy is a contract of good faith. So, the policy is only as valid as the information provided by the customer. Additionally, the premiums need to be paid regularly to keep the policy valid. Moreover, Every life and health insurance company authorized to sell insurance in Canada is required, by the federal, provincial, and territorial regulators, to become a member of Assuris under the Insurance Companies Act of Canada.. Assuris is an independent, not-forprofit, organization founded in 1990. Their mission is to protect policyholders if their life and health insurance company fails.
In conclusion — Every family and individual has their own distinct financial needs. What might suit one may not be the best option for another. It is advisable to consult an insurance advisor to find a plan that suits you best. You can contact me to go over the details and compare different policies offered by different insurance providers before you make a decision. Insurance is an important investment and money well spent only if you find the right plan. You will understand the value it offers in the long run. Don’t let these common misconceptions make you think otherwise.
Bijan Pakzad, born in Tehran in 1940, emerged as one of the most influential fashion designers globally. Following his education in Europe, he embarked on a journey that would lead him to Los Angeles in 1973. Three years later, in 1976, he unveiled his inaugural boutique, “House of Bijan,” on the renowned Rodeo Drive. His boutique was not merely a retail space but an embodiment of opulence and meticulous craftsmanship, attracting clientele from the world’s upper echelons.
Bijan’s early years in Tehran, amidst a family of affluence and influence, shaped his affinity for fashion and design. His European education further honed his skills, setting the stage for his transformative impact on men’s fashion.
Bijan’s clientele transcended borders and industries, boasting names that read like a who’s who of the global elite. From royalty to Hollywood icons, his creations adorned the wardrobes of influential figures across the spectrum. Notable among his clientele were five U.S. Presidents: George H. W. Bush, Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton, along with esteemed politicians such as Tony Blair and Najib Razak, and members of international royalty like the former King and Queen of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi & Farah Pahlavi. Bijan’s client list extended to luminaries in the world of fashion, with designers like Oscar de la Renta, Tom Ford, and Giorgio Armani seeking his bespoke designs. Actors such as Tom Cruise and Anthony Hopkins, as well as professional athletes like Mick McCarthy and Liam Brady, also sought his sartorial expertise.
Bijan’s approach to client relationships went beyond transactions; he cultivated deep connections with each individual, understanding their preferences to offer personalized service. Every purchase from Bijan came with a complimentary notebook detailing the optimal ways to wear each garment, reflecting his commitment to ensuring his clients looked and felt their best.
Bijan’s boutique on Rodeo Drive transcended the traditional retail experience, embodying a lifestyle of luxury and refinement. Accessible only by appointment, the boutique ensured utmost privacy and exclusivity for its discerning clientele. Upon entering, guests were greeted by a lavish interior adorned with antique Persian carpets and a breathtaking Lucite-and-brass staircase, reflecting Bijan’s impeccable taste and attention to detail.
In addition to exquisite clothing designs, Bijan expanded his offerings to include a range of lifestyle accessories, from crocodile-trimmed luggage to a 24-karat gold Colt .38 caliber automatic pistol. Each item was curated to reflect the brand’s ethos of uncompromising quality and luxury.
Bijan’s interests extended beyond clothing to luxury automobiles and fragrances. His custom yellow Bugatti Veyron, a striking manifestation of his flamboyant style, became a symbol of extravagance. In 1981, he ventured into the realm of fragrances, launching his signature scent that would become a staple among his affluent clientele.
Among Bijan’s most iconic creations was the Bijan Bugatti Veyron 16.4, a bespoke masterpiece crafted in collaboration with Bugatti. This bespoke vehicle, adorned in Bijan’s signature yellow hue, stood as a testament to his pursuit of luxury and innovation. Parked outside his flagship boutique on Rodeo Drive, the Bijan Bugatti became an emblem of opulence, capturing the attention of passersby with its unparalleled beauty and elegance.
Son of the legendary designer Bijan
In 2011, Bijan Pakzad passed away, leaving behind a legacy that transcended mere fashion. However, his vision lives on through his son, Nicolas Bijan, who has assumed leadership within the company. Under Nicolas’s stewardship, the House of Bijan continues to uphold its tradition of excellence while embracing new opportunities for growth and innovation.
Nicolas Bijan’s commitment to preserving his father’s legacy is evident in his dedication to quality and craftsmanship. With a keen understanding of his clientele and a passion for luxury
automobiles, Nicolas is poised to carry the Bijan legacy into the future, ensuring that the brand remains synonymous with sophistication, elegance, and unparalleled luxury.
Bijan’s legacy endures as a testament to his unwavering dedication to craftsmanship, luxury, and personalized service. From his humble beginnings in Tehran to the illustrious halls of Rodeo Drive, Bijan Pakzad’s influence on the world of fashion and luxury remains indelible, leaving an indelible mark on the industry for generations to come.
The plane tree of Vali Ast Street stands as the genesis of my artistic journey, its wide leaves and comforting shadow fostering the flourishing of my creativity. Beneath its branches, I unearthed a profound appreciation for art’s capacity to convey emotions and provoke thought, with the tree itself serving as a silent mentor, instilling in me the virtues of patience, perseverance, and growth amidst adversity.
My artistic odyssey commenced during my formative years in high school in Germany, where exposure to the vibrant world of modern art ignited a passion for painting. This passion intertwined with a deep-seated interest in literature, leading me to pursue both disciplines academically, enriching my work with layers of meaning and depth.
Through numerous exhibitions globally, I had the privilege of sharing my unique perspective with diverse audiences, fostering cultural exchange and dialogue. However, it was my immigration to Canada in 2013 that marked a pivotal chapter in my journey, presenting a mosaic of challenges and transformations as I navigated the complexities of adapting to a new environment.
The move to Canada prompted a recalibration of my artistic vision and personal identity, as I immersed myself in the rich tapestry of Canadian society. Drawing inspiration from a myriad
of sources – history, geography, mythology, and technology – I embarked on a transformative journey of introspection and adaptation, seeking to integrate diverse influences into my artistic expression.
Studying at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver proved to be an enriching and transformative experience, providing endless possibilities for creative expression and personal growth. Through my art, I strive to confront the challenges of our digitally-driven reality, sparking conversations, provoking introspection, and challenging established perceptions.
Reflecting on my journey, from the plane tree of Vali Ast Street to the founding of the Moonlight Art Academy in Vancouver, I am reminded that every step, every leaf, and every shadow embraced has contributed to a larger narrative of creativity, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of artistic excellence. My journey from Iran and Germany to Canada has been a transformative odyssey, shaping my identity as an artist and illuminating my unique artistic voice.

Grown up, Sareh expressed a love for all things weddings, especially the dress. In fact, at her own wedding in 2009, her father joked in his speech about her ongoing obsession with wedding gowns. Perhaps it was fate that the search for her own dress set her down the path to create her own line. As her wedding day approached, Sareh grew ever more frustrated, as she couldn’t find “the one” — a dress that combined sophistication with tradition, while still being ethereal and elegant. In desperation, she decided to design her own gown.
With a degree in graphic design from George Mason University, Sareh had the background to support such a daring gamble. She understood how to work with patterns and layouts, drawing from her success in utilizing traditional Persian art, honoring her background as an Iran native. Her work on numerous commercial and nonprofit media ads had been profiled in a number of magazines and books. With this accomplished background, Sareh was able to create the dress of her dreams.
After wearing many hats in the bridal industry, from working at a high-end bridal salon to modeling bridal gowns, the Sareh Nouri line began to form. Sareh began collaborating with couture dressmakers and consulting one-on-one with brides-to-be. It is that experience which laid the foundation for the Sareh Nouri line.
Sensitivities towards shopping for her own gown, as well as working hands-on with brides-to-be, fueled the success of Sareh’s designs. Designs that speak to brides searching for a gown that is romantic, feminine, timeless, and sophisticated. Each design is handmade here in the United States by our extremely talented team of dressmakers with Sareh by their side. These designs fuse traditional silhouettes with whimsical details that are ideal for the modern bride. Incorporating the finest imported French lace and Italian silk, the Sareh Nouri bride is ensured to have the highest level of quality and attention to detail dedicated to their gown.
Today, the Sareh Nouri collection can be found in bridal boutiques around the globe. They have been featured on TV shows including TLC’s “Brides of Beverly Hills,” “Cake Boss,” and E! News with Giuliana Rancic. Her gowns have been worn by “American Idol” alum Diana DeGarmo and Miss America Caressa Cameron. They have also been photographed for top bridal publications, in addition to being featured in People Magazine, US Weekly Magazine, Grace Ormonde Wedding Style, Washingtonian Magazine, Weddings Unveiled, and Brides Magazine, among others.

Can you share a bit about your journey into dentistry? What initially sparked your interest in pursuing this career path?
I grew up in an immigrant family where educational achievement was considered a very high priority. I was fortunate to have many older cousins who were excellent examples of educational and professional success in healthcare, and they served as amazing role models for me. Growing up as a Baha’i, finding a profession which could be of service to humanity was always emphasized. Dentistry was the perfect merging of my interest in art as well as the health sciences. I volunteered as a high school student in a large dental office in Ottawa, and knew that this was what I wanted to do as a profession.
As a dentist, what aspects of your work bring you the greatest satisfaction or fulfillment?
For me, the extensive training that I have received since completing dental school over the past 20 years in implant dentistry and surgery have constantly motivated me to challenge myself to grow as a clinician, being able to deliver treatments that are truly life changing to my patients. Dentistry has given me the opportunity to be able to travel the world to provide volunteer services for the less fortunate in 3rd world countries, giving them an improved quality of life. Here at home on a regular basis, giving a patient a beautiful new smile, watching their joyful reaction as they see it for the first time, providing implant patients with new teeth to chew with when they were missing their teeth for years, taking patients out of severe pain and discomfort, and seeing their relief and peace of mind once their pain is resolved. These things bring me the most joy.
What do you consider to be the key factors that have contributed to your success as a dentist?
In order to have success as a dentist, you have to understand that you are in the business of building relationships with people. Because we see patients every few months for many years, we get to know them, their families, their hopes and dreams. I’ve had
the privilege of watching my patients grow up from children to adults, I’ve watched them get married, divorced, graduate, build successful businesses, I’ve been there for the ups and downs of their lives. You have to have genuine interest and truly care about who they are as people. Communicating well with your patients, understanding their expectations, making sure that they understand what you are about to do for them, learning as much as possible about the “person behind the teeth” is the most important aspect of our profession.
In terms of technology, are there any specific tools or equipment that you utilize in your clinic that you believe set you apart from other dentists?
I wouldn’t say this necessarily “sets me apart”, but adopting the digital evolution of dentistry has completely changed the way we are able to deliver care to our patients. Utilizing cone-beam 3-D technology and intra-oral scanning has greatly improved our ability to deliver care with precision and planning. We are able to perform surgery, cosmetic dentistry and even orthodontics with so much more precision and predictability than ever before through embracing the advent of these technologies.
For individuals considering dentistry as a future career, what advice would you offer? Are there any specific qualities or skills that you believe are essential for success in this field?
Dentistry is a constantly evolving field. One must embrace a lifetime of learning and improving. Staying current and striving to improve your clinical skills is incredibly important. But more importantly, one should take a genuine interest in learning about people. In my 21 years of clinical practice, I’ve met tens of thousands of people, with vastly different personalities, emotions and characteristics. With such a diverse exposure to different people, I’ve had the opportunity to train extensively on developing effective communication skills in real time. This is probably the most important skill to learn in your career. It’s hard work, but it’s so fulfilling. Besides having a loving family, to be able to love what you do is the greatest gift in life.

Dr. Sepehr Rahmany was born in Iran, but left at age 3 just before the revolution in 1979. As a young child, his family first moved to Toronto, but most of his formative years were spent in Ottawa. Being raised in a tiny town outside of Ottawa, he grew up in an area of the country where he was truly immersed
in small-town Canadian culture as well as being exposed to his roots as a Persian-Canadian. Having exposure to such vastly different cultures has allowed him to be able to relate to people from all walks of life.
In the realm of jewelry, diamonds radiate with a captivating blend of contrast and harmony, where brilliance meets subtlety in perfect unison. Opposites attract, and beauty shines forth as shiny jewels, despite their differences, harmonize magnificently. Envision a vibrant red ruby juxtaposed with a cool green emerald, akin to strawberries and leaves, yet seamlessly complementing each other on a necklace. This harmony between opposites is a testament to the magic of jewelry, where even a blue sapphire with a hint of green or a yellow topaz with a touch of orange can create an exquisite synergy. Through such contrasts, jewels reveal the beauty of diversity, showcasing how opposites can come together to create a stunning rainbow.
The dance of colored diamonds, celebrated for their brilliance, unveils a mesmerizing spectacle of hues. Each colored diamond contributes to a captivating tapestry where every hue narrates a unique story. Picture a fiery yellow diamond alongside a cool blue one—distinct as sunshine and the ocean, yet harmonious as they unite in splendor. Despite their differences, colored diamonds blend seamlessly, with subtle hints of one hue within another fostering a sense of cohesion. When set in jewelry, colored diamonds offer endless possibilities for playing with contrast and harmony, such as pairing a yellow diamond with yellow gold for a warm, unified look or a blue diamond with white gold for a striking contrast. Colored diamonds exemplify how opposites attract, showcasing how different hues can harmonize beautifully, much like the vibrant colors of a rainbow.
The setting of a diamond plays a crucial role in defining its overall appearance, offering a delicate balance of contrast and harmony. For instance, prong settings, with their minimalist design, allow the diamond to shine while maintaining a harmonious balance between brilliance and setting. Experimenting with different metal colors within a single setting can create a dynamic interplay of contrast and harmony, providing endless opportunities for creative expression.
The cut of a diamond orchestrates a symphony of angles and light, where precision and artistry converge to unveil the stone’s inner brilliance. Each facet within a diamond cut creates a unique interplay of light and shadow, contributing to the stone’s overall sparkle and beauty. The harmonious arrangement of facets determines the diamond’s brilliance, creating a mesmerizing display that captivates the beholder.
Diamond clarity, despite imperfections, adds depth and character to each stone, fostering a fascinating interplay of contrast and harmony. While flawless diamonds represent the epitome of perfection, included diamonds offer a personal connection to the natural world, with their imperfections narrating stories of resilience and uniqueness. Visualize a diamond adorned with pinpoint inclusions, akin to a constellation of stars, each flaw enhancing the stone’s allure and individuality.
Black diamonds, with their mysterious allure, embody a unique harmony where darkness meets brilliance. Speckled with tiny inclusions, these diamonds evoke a captivating contrast against their lustrous surface, reminiscent of stars adorning the night sky. The interplay of light and dark within black diamonds creates a mesmerizing dance, underscoring the beauty found in the unexpected.
In the realm of jewelry design, contrast emerges as the guiding force, weaving a tapestry of harmony that transcends tradition and innovation. From the sparkle of diamonds set against dark metal backdrops to the interplay of textures, each element contributes to a symphony of beauty. Diamonds, with their diverse brilliance, epitomize the essence of contrast and harmony, illuminating the darkness with their radiance and enriching the composition with their diversity. In the realm where luxury meets innovation, where craftsmanship intertwines with cuttingedge technology, a groundbreaking collaboration has emerged, transcending boundaries and redefining excellence. The heralded partnership between The Macallan and Bentley Motors has reached a pinnacle with the unveiling of their latest creation: The Macallan Horizon.
“the most complex and visionary whisky project”
Jaume Ferras, Creative Director of The Macallan
Marking a significant milestone in The Macallan’s 200-year journey of unparalleled whisky craftsmanship, The Macallan Horizon stands as a testament to the harmonious convergence of tradition and modernity. This exclusive single malt Scotch whisky, born from a profound exchange of expertise, is a celebration of uncompromised excellence and an extraordinary voyage towards the future.
At the heart of The Macallan Horizon lies a meticulously crafted blend of six first-fill sherry seasoned oak casks, each carefully selected to encapsulate the essence of Bentley’s timeless quality and design. Crafted by The Macallan’s Master Whisky Maker Kirsteen Campbell, this sophisticated whisky entices with rich and indulgent notes of dried fruit, spice, oak, and leather, delivering a sensory experience reminiscent of Bentley’s world-class grand tourers. However, The Macallan Horizon is more than just a whisky; it is a triumph of design and innovation. Encased within a visionary horizontal vessel, featuring a unique 180-degree twist detail, this limited edition release challenges the conventions of traditional whisky bottling. Crafted in collaboration with Bentley Motors, the vessel embodies the horizontal trajectory of the automotive world, symbolizing a journey towards new horizons.
The vessel itself is a work of art, meticulously designed and crafted to reflect the shared values of The Macallan and Bentley. Made from bespoke glass, the vessel is enveloped in precision-engineered aluminium ribbon reminiscent of Bentley’s sculptural foundation. This ribbon is not just an aesthetic choice but also a nod to the materials used in Bentley’s iconic motorcars, marrying form and function seamlessly.
The surrounding recycled copper frame adds a touch of heritage to the design, containing copper sourced from The Macallan’s historic stills—a subtle yet significant nod to the distillery’s rich legacy. The use of recycled materials underscores the commitment of both brands to sustainability and responsible craftsmanship.
Further enhancing the vessel’s luxurious appeal is the incorporation of Bentley’s Crown Cut Walnut veneer and low carbon leather. These premium materials, synonymous with Bentley’s opulent interiors, elevate the presentation of The Macallan Horizon, adding an extra layer of sophistication to an already exceptional product.
In addition to its exquisite design, The Macallan Horizon is distinguished by its bespoke closure, crafted from oak wood sourced from one of the six casks used in the whisky’s maturation process. This oak inlay not only serves as a visual homage to the whisky’s origins but also mirrors the aesthetics of Bentley’s Drive Dynamic Control rotary dial, further bridging the worlds of whisky and automotive design.
Jaume Ferras, Creative Director of The Macallan, describes The Macallan Horizon as “the most complex and visionary whisky project” the distillery has embarked upon, emphasizing the profound exchange of expertise with Bentley Motors. Adrian Hallmark, Bentley’s Chairman and CEO, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the product’s innovative materials and stunning design as a new benchmark for quality and craftsmanship.
As The Macallan Horizon makes its debut as a limited edition release, available exclusively in 70cl format, it invites connoisseurs and enthusiasts alike to embark on a journey of discovery and indulgence. Whether savored neat or admired for its exquisite craftsmanship, this remarkable collaboration between two iconic brands represents a bold step towards the future—a future where tradition and innovation intertwine, setting a new standard for luxury and excellence.

Starting a business is an important undertaking involving many critical decisions that will have long-term effects. The proper form can potentially minimize your liabilities, delay, or minimize your taxes, and protect your wealth. Many vehicles exist for operating a business, including sole proprietorships, joint ventures, corporations, co-operatives, and partnerships. This article will briefly review a corporation and a partnership, which are the most common vehicles.
A common form for starting a business or holding property is a corporation. A corporation must have at least one shareholder. Shareholders are basically the owners. Those owners elect one or more directors who run the corporation. The directors may appoint executives or officers, such as a CEO, to handle the dayto-day operations of the business. The same individual can be a shareholder, director, and an officer in a corporation. Directors of a BC corporation can be a foreigner with no immigration status in Canada, but if the corporation is being managed outside of Canada, it will face different tax consequences and its ability to acquire certain property in Canada could be limited.
A corporation is a separate legal entity from its shareholders and directors. As long as people know they are dealing with a corporation, then any liabilities arising from the business are limited to the corporation, as opposed to its shareholders or directors – with some exceptions. For example, directors remain personally liable for employee wages and for remittances of GST and payroll deductions to CRA. But, despite those limited exceptions, the benefits of shielding business owners from liability of the business are broad enough to make corporations a popular form for doing business or holding property these days. In addition, incorporating can have certain tax advantages.
A partnership is not a legal entity itself. It is a relationship among legal entities, such as individuals or corporations. Forming a partnership allows you to enter into business with others in the same way that forming a corporation does with multiple shareholders. But, if you form a limited partnership, you will benefit from tax advantages that doing business through a corporation will not allow.
Doing business with others through a corporation with multiple
The Canadian tax system is designed to be integrated, meaning that whether you earn income personally or through a corporation in the same year, the payable taxes are going to be approximately the same. However, earning business income through a corporation can allow you to defer taxes in certain cases. For example, in case of a small active business (a defined term), you can defer taxes by leaving the portion of the business income that you do not need to withdraw for personal use in the corporation’s bank account, where it is subject to a lower tax rate. You will pay the approximate difference with the higher tax rate once you withdraw that business income from the corporation. Also, if your family members work on average 20 hours per week for the corporation, you might be able to split the corporate business income with them, to subject the income to lower tax brackets.
Moreover, if the shares of the corporate business qualify, you can sell the shares when you are ready to exit. Every individual is entitled to receiving more than $1m in tax free income during their lifetime from the sale of qualified shares. You may be able to multiply this tax-free income by sharing it with your relatives if you create a family trust to own the shares of the corporation, while you maintain direct control of the business.
shareholders carries the disadvantage that, if the business results in a loss, then the loss is stuck in the corporation, and cannot be used by its shareholders to reduce their own taxable income elsewhere. But, in a limited partnership, losses are divided among and flow through to the partners, who can in turn use them to reduce their own taxable income from a different source. Partnerships are generally more expensive to set up and maintain than corporations.
Regardless of the form that is right for you, if you are doing business with others, you should enter into a written agreement with them on how to deal with separations. A separation can happen for many reasons. For example, the parties might not get along, or you may have a buyer for the business but only some

It’s early morning in Oak Bay and the breeze has whipped up whitecaps on the ocean. Meters away from me waves are crashing on the rocks, while overhead, seagulls dip and dive and a bald eagle soars effortlessly towards the rocky outcroppings in search of an easy breakfast. Spring is trying to break through the chill of winter on Vancouver Island, but from the mineral waters of a heated pool on the cusp of the seashore, I’m ensconced in warmth, solitude and peace.
It’s day one of a weekend away at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel, a stately, luxurious property that’s all about casual elegance, deep comfort and the serenity that comes with sweeping ocean views. A longtime landmark in the Oak Bay neighbourhood, the hotel is a perfect retreat for a car-free getaway. A vibrant retail village is a 20-minute walk from the front door, while other walks entice us along the ocean, past windswept, log-strewn beaches.
We spend our first afternoon browsing through the shops in Oak Bay Village, most of them small, independently owned businesses showcasing island-crafted jewelry, apparel and art. We meander into bakeries, inhaling the aroma of freshly baked pastries, and peruse the paintings of local artists at an Oak Bay gallery. Colourful bouquets attract the eye from a local florist, while the community bookshop is a treasure trove of literature and a great place to browse.
Back at the hotel we feast on pear, fennel and arugula salad and a richly decadent roasted mushroom pizza at Faro, an Italian eatery known for its handcrafted pizza. Then it’s time to succumb at the Boathouse Spa, where I’m whisked away to blissville by the gentle hands of an aesthetician as she massages and rejuvenates my dry, tired skin.
We watch evening descend on Victoria from the seaside terrace, as lights flicker on around the steaming hot pools and firepits are lit for the night. The mineral pools are open until late, and a sunset or late night soak is tempting. Guests move between the large pool and the two jetted hot tubs, cooling off on chairs that overlook the choppy water.
Later, we head to the Snug Pub for a cocktail, stepping back in time as the hotel’s long history comes sharply into focus. The Oak Bay Hotel was built in 1927 in Tudor-style architecture and rebuilt after a fire in 1930. Its Snug Pub was the first neighbourhood pub in the city, and an enduring community institution that locals cherished and demanded be preserved. So in 2008, when the hotel was ripe for another rebuild, the pub’s door, stained glass window, hand-hewn beams and light fixtures were saved from demolition and used to retain the character of the old pub. Step through its doors today and you leave the contemporary grandeur of the new hotel behind you. The pub still feels like an old-world establishment punctuated by a great menu and the social ambience that has defined it for close to a century.
Preservation and re-use is taken seriously in Victoria, a city that’s all about history and a deep respect for the past. We see that ethos again when we head to Havn, a floating barge in the inner harbour that’s been retrofitted with saunas, hot and cold plunge pools, showers and relaxation areas.
Havn was a COVID project for two partners who purchased a 1943 barge and transformed it into an urban, social space where folks could soak quietly in pools and saunas on the upper deck while taking in the city views. To build it, they rescued old-growth logs that were floating in the water around the island, dried and milled it, and used it to build beautiful decks and saunas.
Spend a few hours moving between the plunge pools and the saunas, or wrapped in a robe in one of the relaxation areas, and it’s easy to see they achieved their goal.
Havn truly is a phone-free (and for the most part food-free) environment where guests enjoy the meditative quiet or talk softly among themselves. Sessions are limited to three hours and the number of bookings is carefully restricted so it never feels crowded. We soaked until our fingers puckered, exfoliated with lavenderscented salt, rinsed our worries away and left with deliciously tingling skin. It was a perfect finale to an island weekend defined by ocean vistas, luxury and pampering.
Make it a car-less weekend by flying on Helijet, North America’s largest helicopter airline. The 30-minute commute from downtown Vancouver to downtown Victoria is a first-class visual treat with spellbinding views and superb service.

Persian saffron, often hailed as the “Red Gold” of Iran, carries within its delicate threads a rich tapestry of history and tradition that stretches back over millennia. Its journey from the rocky soils of ancient Persia to the tables of epicureans worldwide is a testament to the enduring allure of this precious spice.
The history of Persian saffron is as captivating as the spice itself. Tracing its origins to the regions of ancient Persia, saffron has been cultivated in the fertile valleys and sun-drenched fields of Iran for over 3,000 years. Its cultivation can be traced back to the time of the Achaemenid Empire, where saffron was prized not only for its culinary uses but also for its medicinal and spiritual significance.
Throughout history, Persian saffron has been revered by kings, poets, and scholars alike. Its mention in ancient Persian texts, such as the Avesta and the Shahnameh, attests to its cultural and symbolic importance. Legends abound regarding the discovery of saffron, with tales of mystical origins and divine blessings adding to its mystique.
The cultivation of saffron in Iran reached its zenith during the Islamic Golden Age, where Persian merchants traded saffron along the ancient Silk Road, spreading its fame far and wide. Its inclusion in Persian cuisine, particularly in dishes such as saffron rice, kebabs, and desserts, became emblematic of Iranian culinary tradition.
Saffron’s journey through history has not been without its challenges. Wars, invasions, and political upheavals have threatened its cultivation, yet the resilience of Iranian farmers has ensured its survival through the ages. Today, Iran remains the largest producer of saffron in the world, with the regions of Khorasan, Kerman, and Isfahan leading the way in saffron production.
The harvesting of saffron remains a labor-intensive process, steeped in tradition and skill. Each autumn, as the purple petals of the saffron crocus emerge, farmers venture into the fields at dawn to carefully handpick the delicate crimson stigmas. This meticulous process, passed down through generations, ensures the purity and potency of Persian saffron.
ALEPH MAGAZINEBeyond its culinary uses, Persian saffron holds a special place in traditional medicine and folklore. Revered for its medicinal properties, saffron has been used in ancient Persian remedies to treat a myriad of ailments, from depression to digestive disorders. Its inclusion in rituals and ceremonies further underscores its spiritual significance in Persian culture.
Today, Persian saffron continues to captivate the world with its unparalleled flavor, aroma, and vibrant hue. From haute cuisine to home kitchens, saffron’s versatility knows no bounds, uniting food lovers across continents in appreciation of its exquisite taste and cultural heritage.
As we celebrate the golden essence of Persian saffron, let us also recognize the importance of preserving its legacy for future generations. Initiatives aimed at sustainable cultivation, fair trade practices, and cultural preservation are essential to safeguarding the traditions and livelihoods of Iranian saffron farmers.
In essence, the history of Persian saffron is a testament to the enduring spirit of Iranian culture—a story of resilience, innovation, and the timeless beauty of nature’s bounty. So let us cherish each precious strand of saffron, not only for its culinary delights but for the rich tapestry of history and tradition it embodies—the golden essence of Persia.
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
Pinch of salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs, at room temperature
1/2 cup milk
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper.
2. In a small bowl, crush the saffron threads slightly with your fingers. Then, add the warm water and let the saffron steep for about 10-15 minutes to release its flavor and color.
3. In a separate bowl, sift together the allpurpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
4. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
5. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
6. In a measuring cup, combine the milk and saffron-infused water mixture.
7. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter-sugar mixture, alternating with the saffron milk mixture. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
1/4 teaspoon saffron threads
1/4 cup warm water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Saffron-infused syrup (optional):
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup granulated sugar
Pinch of saffron threads
8. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and spread it evenly.
9. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
10. While the cake is baking, prepare the saffron-infused syrup (if using). In a small saucepan, combine the water, sugar, and saffron threads. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and let it cool.
11. Once the cake is baked, remove it from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
12. If using the saffron syrup, poke holes in the top of the cake with a toothpick and brush the syrup over the warm cake, allowing it to soak in.
13. Slice and serve the saffron milk cake as is or with a dollop of whipped cream or a sprinkle of powdered sugar for garnish.
Enjoy the delightful fusion of flavors in this saffron-infused milk cake, perfect for any occasion!
