BOTIQUE HOTEL

U.G. - SPRING 2020

This competition hosted by La Universidad de Mendoza, involves a massive program for a boutique hotel in the middle of the mountain regions in Baja Verapaz, Guatemala.

The topography presents a considerable inclination in the southern part of the project. The vocation of this project is to offer the adventureloving tourist a place with a close relationship with nature, excellent gastronomy, direct contact with the production and elaboration of coffee and fundamentally a place where they can find an environment of relaxation and rest.

The program consists of a reception, administration offices, staff accommodations, coffee bar, restaurant, guest accommodations, leisure, wellness center, and storages.

Also considered in the design, include the climatic conditions of the place, with the idea of proposing the use of solar energy,

LEISURE

The leisure building is the introduction into the coffee production, and it is placed between the existing coffee production buildings. The space consists of a multipurpose room for events, a gallery, and a coffee bar. The approach of this building was to serve as an intermediate space as well as a resting space before proceeding to experience the rest of the site.

STAFF ACCOMMODATIONS

The staff accommodations building includes a shared kitchen and a communal green space which is meant to create a sense of community within the staff.

CABINS/ BUNGALOWS

The guest accommodations were split between a hotel-style building and private cabins. The cabins included a single, double, shared, and suite design. The approach of the cabins is to be self-sustainable which was achieved with the incorporation of solar panels and rain -water collection on the butterfly roof system. The rainwater sloped to one side of the roof and fell through a slit on the terrace to the underground water collection system.

The

Guatemala patterns used in textiles by the locals inspired the butterfly roof.

ARCH 406 - SPRING 2021

This mixed-use building is sited on one of the many streets of metropolitan San Juan, Puerto Rico that is shifting as the city continues to grow. As the Avenida and the existing buildings are quickly being converted to business outlets and commercial estates, this project emphasizes and tries to resolve the intergration of the two aspects: commercial and residential, and finding harmony within the collaboration.

In effort to achieve an environmentally friendly and sustainable design in the concrete jungle of San Juan, my project will rely on utilizing various passive systems. Due to the tropical climate, a shaded courtyard will be implemented to have a shaded outdoor buffer zone in effort to have extended living and working areas and moderate the internal climate.

Site Plan

Ground Floor

The ground floor was reserved for the commercial spaces, including two retail spaces, a beauty salon, and the entry to the winery which is on the 1st level.

The building was arranged to maximize public view to the commerical spaces, meanwhile the residential spaces were placed towards the rear side of the lot in order to reserve privacy.

The concept stemmed from the regional architecture of Puerto Rico. The form is based on the idea of the courtyard.

In order to be conscience about the social affairs of the island and issues with electricity and natural disasters, the project incorporates various strategies that allow for comfortable use of the building with limited reliance on the unstable electrical grid of Puerto Rico.

CREATIVE CENTER

U.G. - FALL 2021

The main concept explored in this project was the idea of connection. Seeing as the site is disconnected from the nearby buildings and the roads, which is not really a pedestrian-friendly area, we’d like to connect the students to the site. To better connect the public to the site, we’d like to close Spence Street and Lubbock Street, making them an extension of the public space. By analyzing the current foot traffic, we found that the southernmost corner of our site is the busy intersection due to the number of students entering and exiting the commons on their way to and from the main campus.

Concept

In contrast, the northernmost part of the site rarely saw students an also provided shading with existing trees. Taking this into account, we decided to make the entrance on the southwest corner of our site which corresponds to the existing busy circulation. The main idea here is to funnel the people from the busy intersection into our building, which then informed the idea of having atriums. The atriums then serve to transition the people from a public and busy exterior space into our quieter exterior space adjacent to our building towards the northern side. This helped us with the development of our site, and we were able to create a more reserves exterior space with an amphitheater and areas for lounging.

La Ola

City on Water U.G. - SPRING 2021

Located in the Southern coast of Puerto Rico, La Parguera exemplifies a unique phenomenon based around casetas/casitas. These particular type of illegal buildings initially surfaced as forms of squatting by the poor, but in present day they are mostly used as second homes for vacation or rental purposes. La Parguera, just as other costal areas of Puerto Rico, has become a tourist center and these “little homes” (casitas) have taken advantage

of Puerto Rico vernacular in terms of vibrant colors, wood structure, and the colonial relation to become a symbol of Puerto Rico. La Ola has been designed in modular sections. Each section is floated and they are structurally conneected to the next series, like railroad tracks.

Docking

With an emphasis on community needs, the central hub serves as a social center, including restaurants and retail spaces, where society can come together whether to celebrate and dance or for commerce and exchange. A boardwalk further runs around the perimeter and provides a means of docking for the 'casitas'.

Shaped by the light, wind, and place, the casitas are designed for maximum transparency for views. The curvilinear approach is a response to the maritime context, meanwhile the play on color as well as the roof coincide with the local culture of Puerto Rico.

La Ola houses different sustainability aspects including aqua-culture (fish farming and seaweed farming) and a utilities space that will provide energy to the hub through solar and tidal energy.

JUDD Architecture

M.Arch - FALL 2022

From the initial planning of this multistory building, the design’s approach focused on the specific urban conditions of the site located south of Deep Elm, Dallas. To establish a link between the characters in the program and the surrounding urban scene made up of an industrial quality with railway track, the form development draws from the geometry of old factories and common industrial architecture. The angled elements of the roof provide

abundant natural daylight to the spaces of the building. The ceiling heights were also studied to reflect the geometry of the roof typologies. The building also features a metal skin that clads the facade to depict the roofs as one continuous act that softly picks up surrounding colors and reflections of the surrounding site.

Judd Museum

A key factor in creating a sense of legibility and relationship between the four volumes was the understanding of Judd’s principles and ideas as they could be integrated in the architectural spaces. The principles of the Judd piece begin to relate to the creation of space and serve to define organization. Programmatically, the building is divided into four volumes, each displaying a distinct stage of Donald Judd’s work and the art tendencies during the specific periods surrounding the Minimalist movement, but similar to Judd’s Untitled objects, the spaces are articulated inside to connect the volumes into a cohesive space for art.

Megamorphosis

Summer 2021

The majority of my work and contribution to the office was through my rendering skills. After trying me out on a few renders and being amused by the photorealism of Lumion, I became the “rendering consultant” and participated in the post-production aspect of a real project. I worked closely with the interior design personnel to become acquainted with materials that were to be matched in the renders.

During my time in the office, I was able to participate in various activities ranging from site visits, client meetings, the initial design process (schematic design), and the business aspect of a project.

INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

Drawing Works

An interesting aspect of drawing is the shading and the different characteristics and textures it provides to further elevate the linear perspective drawing, and how these techniques are part of our process of representing our vision.
