Queridos amigos de la Alliance Française y amantes del cine, ¡Volvemos!

La 13ra edición del Festival de Cine Europeo marca su inserción en el paisaje artístico puertorriqueño. Se ilustra con la participación fiel de los apoyos institucionales y privados, así como la maravillosa implicación reforzada de los cónsules y las embajadas europeas de España, Alemania, Italia, Bélgica, Países Bajos, Malta, República Checa, Suiza y Suecia, quienes llevaron una contribución significativa.

Nos alegramos que Cinefiesta se unió con nosotros para esta edición, con la nueva dirección prometedora de Álvaro Aponte Centeno, director artístico, y Federico Olivieri, director ejecutivo, así como la participación de nuevas escuelas y universidades a través de los programas dedicados a las mismas.

Nos complace poder contar con el apoyo fortalecido de la Embajada de Francia en Washington y de la visibilidad estadounidense e internacional de la Villa Albertine. Por primera vez, nos beneficiamos del apoyo del Departamento de Estado que contribuirá a aumentar la visibilidad del Festival de Cine Europeo y de la Alliance Française en Puerto Rico y el extranjero.

También quiero reconocer y agradecer el apoyo fundamental de nuestros grandes patrocinadores, TotalEnergies y UBS, así como de todos nuestros demás colaboradores, sin los cuales este festival no podría crecer tanto cada año.

Las salas de Fine Arts Miramar nos reciben un año más con 7 días de proyecciones, eventos, charlas y momentos de alegría que no pueden faltar. Este Festival es para todo el mundo: los pequeños podrán disfrutar de nuestra programación de Festinema Junior, mientras los más grandes podrán descubrir el cine europeo contemporáneo y maravillosos clásicos incluyendo Pierrot le fou, presentado en homenaje al gran director Jean-Luc Godard, quien falleció hace un mes y medio.

Nuestros directores, Álvaro Aponte

Centeno y Federico Olivieri, ofrecen un nuevo impulso al Festival respaldándose sobre la experiencia de sus predecesores, los maravillosos Harold Leonard y Camille Vandenbunder. Unidos al equipo de la AF, traen este evento fundamental que se define como el momento clave de su programación fuera de su sede en Santurce.

Queremos brindar acceso al festival en otros lugares aparte del cine, así que irá de gira,

con nuestro programa CineGira en diferentes pueblos de la isla como Mayagüez y Adjuntas. Se instalará también en diferentes universidades (UPR, Sagrado Corazón, Politécnica) con nuestro proyecto Cine Pasaje.

Se abre la sección Foro Industria para favorecer los encuentros internacionales y fomentar la colaboración y el intercambio cultural entre Puerto Rico y Europa. Queremos igualmente reconocer el cine local con el estreno de 4 cortometrajes realizados por cineastas emergentes puertorriqueños en nuestro programa Cortadito 2022 Presentado por TotalEnergies, gracias al concurso de la AF.

En la época en que el Premio Nobel de literatura se entregó a la autora francesa Annie Ernaux y al momento en que el filósofo Bruno Latour nos deja, podemos abrir el camino para los próximos artistas puertorriqueños y europeos que, como ellos, ofrecen un arte comprometido. Ellos dan visibilidad a un mundo encerrado entre el amor, la alegría, el acto de compartir, y el vértigo existencial ante la crisis climática, los huracanes devastadores y una guerra en Ucrania globalizada que tiene consecuencias sobre la vida de cada humano.

Este Festival nos invita a reflexionar sobre nuestras desigualdades y las condiciones de vida en nuestro planeta, ofreciéndoles la posibilidad

de un nuevo mundo basado en valores sociales y conexiones sentimentales. ¡Ven a conocer tus emociones más bellas!

Una ventana que abrimos para mirar lo que sucede adentro; en eso se convertirán las pantallas del cine, los cuales se llenarán de diversas emociones: personajes haciéndose preguntas, individuos asumiendo las consecuencias de sus actos, enfrentando dolores, ejerciendo violencia, o amando con contradicciones o sin contradicciones. Y es que así mismo es la vida, llena de cambios inesperados. ¿Pero qué es lo que mueve el odio, la violencia, la solidaridad, los deseos propios y el amor?

La programación de la 13ra edición del Festival propone detenernos a reflexionar, dentro de una muestra de películas, en su mayoría del cine europeo. Contamos con nuevas categorías cinematográficas, incluyendo una dedicada solamente a las primeras películas realizadas por mujeres. Esta edición cuenta con obras del cine que cargan otros códigos en su lenguaje, pero que a la misma vez tienen una carga emocional y humana imprescindible. Acompañan a toda esta selección, 4 cortometrajes estimulados

por la Alianza Francesa, cuyos estrenos mundiales serán durante el Festival. También nos acompaña una muestra de cortometrajes que brilla en sí misma, curada por nuestros colegas y cómplices de Cinefiesta.

Este banquete cinematográfico abraza la incorporación por primera vez del ámbito profesional con sesiones de “one to one pitching”, masterclasses y mesas redondas. En las mismas, se discutirán temas sobre cómo generar una industria inclusiva de cine nacional, pues nos unimos al dolor y al coraje que se convierten en el motor de crear cambios sociales buscando equidad, empatía, visibilidad y reconocimiento de sectores que han sido invisibilizados. Y que así nosotres también podamos contar nuestras historias y compartirlas con el resto del mundo.

FESTIVAL DE CINE EUROPEO DE PUERTO RICO

En esta edición, el Festival de Cine Europeo de la Alliance Française de Puerto Rico no sólo cumple 13 años. En esta cita, celebramos también la posibilidad de volver a encontrarnos en las salas para disfrutar de la magia del cine en comunidad. Después de los años marcados por la pandemia, nos emociona presentar de nuevo un festival completamente presencial, en el que los primeros protagonistas volverán a ser los espectadores reunidos en los eventos y ante la gran pantalla. Por esto, mi agradecimiento inicial, junto al de todo el equipo organizador del Festival, es para ustedes, asistentes y participantes, sin los que esta gran semana de cine no tendría significado.

La celebración de un festival cinematográfico siempre representa un momento especial para la vida de una localidad. Un festival con este no sólo ofrece una ventana para viajar a través de las películas seleccionadas, sino que representa también un espacio de diálogo, de reflexión y de encuentro en el que el Cine, siendo arte e industria al mismo tiempo, nos permite estrechar lazos más allá de las fronteras. Por este motivo, en esta 13ra edición, nos ilusiona volver a presentar una amplia programación de películas

de una veintena de países diferentes, además de varios estrenos, eventos especiales y programas paralelos con los que consolidamos el evento como una plataforma única para la educación juvenil, el desarrollo del cine puertorriqueño, la cooperación internacional y el fomento de la diversidad cultural a través de toda la Isla. En este sentido, mi más sincero agradecimiento va dirigido también a todos los auspiciadores, patrocinadores y colaboradores que creen, como nosotros, en este proyecto, especialmente a UBS y TotalEnergies por todo su compromiso y por su sólido apoyo.

Estoy convencido de que este 13ro Festival de Cine Europeo de Puerto Rico será una gran semana de cine que nos permitirá volver a compartir momentos inolvidables y mirar, unidos, hacia nuevos horizontes. ¡Qué disfruten y nos vemos en las salas de cine!

JOHANNA ROSALY PUERTO RICO

Este año, Johanna Rosaly celebra 65 años de carrera en el Teatro, el Cine y la Televisión. Una profesional con amplia experiencia en la industria del entretenimiento, Johanna comenzó su carrera desde niña, cuando a los ocho años entró a la Academia Talía para aprender actuación con el Método Stanislavski. Igualmente, estudió bailes españoles y cursó clases de canto con la soprano portuguesa María Justina de Aldrey, llevándola luego a ser una cantante reconocida en Latinoamérica y por la población hispana. En cine, ha trabajado en numerosas producciones locales e internacionales, siendo los más recordados Linda Sara y Lo Que le Pasó a Santiago, única cinta puertorriqueña en ser nominada al Óscar.

This year, Johanna Rosaly celebrates 65 years of career in Theater, Film and Television. A professional with ample experience in the entertainment industry, Johanna began her career as a child, when at the age of eight she entered the Talía Academy to learn acting with the Stanislavski Method. Likewise, she studied Spanish dances and took singing classes with the Portuguese soprano María Justina de Aldrey, leading her to later become an established singer in Latin America. In cinema, she has worked on numerous local and international productions, the most memorable being Linda Sara and Lo Que le Pasó a Santiago, the only Puerto Rican film to be nominated for an Oscar.

Marisé “Tata’’ Álvarez Hernández es una actriz y comediante nacida y crecida en San Juan, Puerto Rico. Durante su jornada profesional, ha trabajado en producciones locales e internacionales. Sus proyectos más recientes incluyen la serie de Star Wars “Obi-Wan Kenobi” para Disney+, donde interpreta el personaje de Nyche Horn; la serie “The Resort’’ para Peacock TV donde interpreta a la hija de Illán Iberra (Luis Guzmán); y la película puertorriqueña Picando Alante producida por Teatro Breve, donde interpreta la hija menor de la familia, Marysol.

Marisé “Tata” Álvarez Hernández is an actress and comedian born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. During her professional journey, she has worked on many local and international productions. Ioana Bugarin es una actriz rumana de cine y teatro. Durante su carrera profesional, ha recibido varios reconocimientos por su trabajo en diversas obras rumanas, como recibir dos premios de actuación Alex por sus participaciones en la película Otto the Barbarian (2020) de Ruxandra Ghiţescu y el cortometraje Mia misses her revenge (2020) de Bogdan Theodor Olteanu. Nos complace tener a la actriz protagonista de Miracol en nuestro Festival en celebración del estreno de la película en Puerto Rico.

Ioana Bugarin is a Romanian film and theater actress. During her professional career, she has received various awards for her work in various Romanian films, such as receiving two Alex acting awards for her participation in the movie Otto the Barbarian (2020) by Ruxandra Ghiţescu and the short film Mia misses her revenge (2020) by Bogdan Theodor Olteanu. We are honored to have the leading actress of Miracol at our Festival in celebration of the film’s premiere in Puerto Rico.

Por más de 20 años, Valérie Mouroux promueve la cooperación cultural a través del cine. Como Directora de Cine, TV y Nuevos Medios en Villa Albertine y Agregada Audiovisual en la Embajada de Francia en los Estados Unidos, actualmente supervisa la promoción de las industrias de entretenimiento y medios franceses en los Estados Unidos mientras busca fortalecer las colaboraciones con los profesionales estadounidenses. Abrazando su pasión por la industria del cine, creó un programa para cineastas emergentes en Cannes, “Fabrique des Cinémas du Monde”, y desarrolló programas y retrospectivas internacionales con algunas de las figuras más importantes del cine francés.

For over 20 years, Valérie Mouroux has been promoting cultural cooperation through cinema. As the Director of Film, TV & New Media at Villa Albertine and Audiovisual Attaché at the Embassy of France in the United States, she currently oversees the promotion of French media and entertainment Industries in the US while also working to strengthen collaborations with American professionals. Embracing her passion for the film industry, she created a program for emerging filmmakers in Cannes, “Fabrique des Cinémas du Monde,” and developed international programs and retrospectives featuring some of the greatest figures of French cinema.

En colaboración con los socios oficiales de esta iniciativa, Cortadito 2022 Presentado por TotalEnergies ha seleccionado las propuestas de cuatro cineastas puertorriqueños y facilita los recursos fundamentales para desarrollar y producir sus cortometrajes, desde asesorías legales, sesiones de script doctoring y acceso a equipos profesionales de producción y post-producción cinematográfica.

Las nuevas producciones terminadas de Cortadito 2022 Presentado por TotalEnergies serán exhibidas en competencia durante la semana oficial del Festival de Cine Europeo de Puerto Rico en las salas de Fine Arts Miramar (San Juan, Puerto Rico) del 3 al 9 de noviembre de 2022. In collaboration with its official partners, Cortadito 2022 Presented by TotalEnergies has selected the proposals of four local filmmakers and facilitated the necessary resources for the development and production of their short films–notably, legal advice, script doctoring sessions, and access to professional equipment for production and post-production cinematography.

Cortadito 2022 Presented by TotalEnergies’ short films in competition will premiere at Fine Arts Miramar in San Juan, Puerto Rico during the Puerto Rico European Film Festival’s official week, running from November 3 to 9, 2022. Audiences in other areas of Puerto Rico will also have the opportunity to enjoy the short films through our Cine Gira program.

Pursuing his dreams, Philip moved to Germany where he finished his studies in 2012 at the HFF Munich with his short film “Aurora”, which has won numerous awards including “Best Short Film” and “Best Director” at the Moscow Short International Film Festival.

An award-winning writer & director of over a dozen short films and music videos with over 15 years of experience in the film industry. In addition to her accomplishments, she has also founded initiatives such as a community cinema and film workshops for low-income youth.

JAVIER SANTIAGO RIVERA COMBINACIÓN PEPPER POLLO CON TOSTONES

Un cineasta de muchos talentos con años de experiencia profesional en la industria del entretenimiento como productor, guionista, actor y miembro fundador de la Orquesta el Macabeo, una orquesta de salsa reconocida mundialmente. Ha escrito guiones para varios largometrajes, entre ellos Nekro, que ha sido aprobado por Ibermedia para su producción.

The multitalented star has years of professional experience in the entertainment industry as a producer, screenwriter, actor and a founding member of the Orquesta el Macabeo, a worldwide recognized salsa orchestra. He has written scripts for several feature films, including “Nekro”, which has been approved by Ibermedia for production.

HISTORIA HISTORY

Desde el 2013, el Festival de Cine Europeo de Puerto Rico ha ayudado a desarrollar el talento de cineastas puertorriqueños en la producción y exhibición de cortometrajes locales. Cortadito es una competencia anual de cortometrajes creada con el fin de apoyar a cineastas locales con los recursos necesarios para fomentar sus talentos y la plataforma adecuada para amplificar su visibilidad. Varias de las obras presentadas en Cortadito han participado y alcanzado reconocimiento internacional, incluso en diferentes festivales de gran prestigio como el New York Latino Film Festival (USA), Cineculpable International Short Film Festival (España) o el Festival Premier Plans d’Angers (Francia).

Since 2013, the Puerto Rico European Film Fetival has fostered the professional and artistic development of aspiring Puerto Rican filmmakers. As a competition, Cortadito is geared to provide participating filmmakers with the resources to produce new work, as well as a public forum for its presentation. Short films presented at the competition have gone on to compete at various festivals in the United States and around the world. Because of the ongoing pandemic, the 2021 edition of Cortadito opted to present previously completed short films.

PREMIOS Y JURADO AWARDS AND JURY

Una vez concluida la 13ra edición del Festival de Cine Europeo de Puerto Rico, en la noche del jueves 10 de noviembre de 2022 el jurado de este programa entregará los premios de la competencia de Cortadito 2022 en el evento especial de Premiación de Cortadito. En este evento se inaugurará también el inicio de la nueva CineGira, con la que se dará difusión a los cortometrajes en al menos 8 municipalidades diferentes de la isla.

To close the Puerto Rico European Film Festival’s 13th edition, the Cortadito 2022 Presented by TotalEnergies jury will present the competition’s awards at the special Cortadito Awards event. To be held on Thursday, November 10, 2022, this special event will also help launch the new edition of the Cine Gira, in which the short films will be broadcasted in at least 8 different municipalities on the island.

Las presentaciones de Calamity, Culottées y Le Brio, películas proporcionadas por el Institut Français, son complementadas con cuadernos digitales y actividades educativas gratuitas, que se desarrollaron en colaboración con la Alliance Française de Paris-Île de France.

Por primera vez, nuestro Festival de Cine Francés para Jóvenes llega a las salas de cine con dos proyecciones gratuitas y abiertas al público de la película familiar, Chien Pourri, la Vie à París, el 5 y 6 de noviembre a las 12:15 pm en Fine Arts Miramar..

In its ninth edition, Festinema Junior presented by UBS continues to inspire and educate young audiences, bringing free screenings of French films to over 1,000 students in 25 local schools. El 13ro Festival de Cine Europeo de Puerto Rico incorpora una propuesta nueva en su programación. Hemos creado categorías diferentes para ofrecerle al público de Puerto Rico una programación más amplia, la cual incluye selecciones que han sido premiadas o exhibidas en los festivales internacionales de mayor prestigio. Cada película tiene su mirada única sobre temas específicos, que a su vez son universales; y que toman acción en ciudades y culturas muy diferentes a las de Puerto Rico, pero que comparten, de igual forma, elementos humanos con nuestra isla en el Caribe. La gran mayoría de estas películas que presentamos en esta selección serán estrenadas por primera vez en el país.

Con esta oferta cinematográfica, esta edición busca también visibilizar y reconocer el trabajo de realizadores, guionistas y directoras mujeres. Es por esto por lo que esta programación cuenta con la primeras películas realizadas por varias mujeres. Al mismo tiempo, a través de las temáticas que plantean algunas obras fílmicas, buscamos crear conversación y reconocimiento sobre temas importantes que apremian en nuestro país. The 13th Puerto Rico European Film Festival incorporates a new proposal in its programming. We have created different categories to offer the Puerto Rican audience a broader program, which includes selections that have been awarded or screened at the most prestigious international festivals. Each film has its own unique take on universal topics that take action in cities and cultures very different from those of Puerto Rico, but that share, in the same way, human elements with our island in the Caribbean. As part of this Festival, the vast majority of these films will premiere for the first time in Puerto Rico.

With this cinematographic offer, this edition also seeks to make visible and recognize the work of female filmmakers, screenwriters and directors. To do so, we have created the “Panorama” category which includes top films made by several women. At the same time, through the themes noted in some of the films, we seek to create conversation and recognize important issues that are pressing in our country. We hope you enjoy this new edition of the Puerto Rico European Film Festival. See you at the cinema!

Blood on the Crown tells the story of how the citizens of Malta fought for independence from Britain in 1919. When the army was sent to quell the riots and the British government covered up the bloody encounter, more than 100 Maltese were charged with instigating violence and imprisoned.

FRENCH FOR THE FUTURE SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship program provides recipients with foundational knowledge via two semesters of French courses at Alliance Française Puerto Rico in San Juan. Classes take a systematic approach based upon the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the leading standard in language education in Europe. Moreover, core course materials are developed by professional French as a foreign language instructors in France. For the 2023 academic term, AFPR and UBS are proud to offer 5 French for the Future scholarships

To be eligible for consideration, candidates should meet the following criteria:

• 12 - 18 years of age

• Currently residing in Puerto Rico

• Currently studying at an intermediate or high school in Puerto Rico.
