MENSAJE DE LOS DIRECTORES
El Festival de Cine Europeo de Puerto Rico (FCEPR), organizado por la Alliance Française de Puerto Rico, celebró este año su 16ta edición con resultados extraordinarios que marcan un hito en su trayectoria. Por primera vez, el Festival superó los 7,000 asistentes, un récord absoluto que integra público en salas, actividades profesionales y eventos comunitarios. Esta cifra refleja la madurez alcanzada por el proyecto, el creciente interés del público puertorriqueño y la relevancia del FCEPR como vitrina de Europa en la isla y como puente natural entre los cines boricua y europeos.
Del 6 al 13 de noviembre, el Festival presentó una programación reforzada que combinó grandes estrenos del cine contemporáneo, la participación de cineastas y expertos internacionales, y una agenda robusta de actividades profesionales. La inauguración, celebrada en el Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico y co-presentada por la Secretaria de Estado, Sra. Rosachely Rivera Santana, reunió a más de cuatrocientos invitados, autoridades y representantes del sector creativo local e internacional. Durante nueve días, las salas de Fine Arts Miramar recibieron a un público entusiasta que llenó funciones a diario. La diversidad de historias, el diálogo entre culturas y la energía colectiva vivida en cada encuentro hicieron tangible el lema que nos acompañó este año: “Pantallas que abren caminos”, recordándonos que el cine sigue siendo un espacio de encuentro, descubrimiento y oportunidades compartidas.
Este espíritu se reflejó también en las palabras de la carta inaugural del Festival, escrita por la Embajadora de la Delegación de la Unión Europea en Estados Unidos, Hon. Jovita Neliupšienė: “Nos reunimos para celebrar una vibrante selección de cine europeo contemporáneo, películas que van más allá del entretenimiento y que invitan a la reflexión, el debate y el diálogo sobre el mundo en el que vivimos.” En un momento global en el que los valores democráticos se ven puestos a prueba, sus
palabras resonaron profundamente en nuestro público. Como señaló en su mensaje, “La cultura nos recuerda el poder de la solidaridad y la cooperación. Al compartir estas películas aquí en Puerto Rico, reafirmamos nuestro compromiso con la apertura, el intercambio cultural y la libertad de expresión.”
Estas ideas reflejan con precisión la misión del FCEPR y la importancia de seguir construyendo espacios culturales que promuevan la empatía, el entendimiento y el diálogo entre comunidades
El FCEPR 2025 destacó también por la consolidación de su programa de encuentros profesionales, que reunió a representantes del sector audiovisual y creativo de Puerto Rico, Estados Unidos y Europa a través de mesas redondas, talleres, charlas temáticas y oportunidades de networking. Esta agenda especializada fortaleció el intercambio profesional y abrió nuevas posibilidades de colaboración internacional.
El compromiso del Festival con la educación y el acceso se reafirmó mediante iniciativas como Festenima Junior, el programa universitario Cine Pasaje y la Cine Gira, que extienden el alcance del cine europeo y boricua a escuelas, universidades y comunidades en todo el archipiélago. Asimismo, el estreno de los cortometrajes producidos en el Cortadito Film Lab volvió a visibilizar el talento emergente del cine puertorriqueño, consolidando este programa como una incubadora y plataforma de lanzamiento para nuevas voces.
Todos estos logros fueron posibles gracias al apoyo de nuestros auspiciadores, patrocinadores y colaboradores, así como a la cooperación de embajadas, consulados e instituciones europeas. Su respaldo confirma que, cuando trabajamos en diálogo y cooperación, es posible construir proyectos culturales que trascienden la suma de sus partes.
Gracias por hacer posible una edición memorable del Festival y por seguir creyendo en el cine y la cultura como espacios de encuentro, creación y futuro compartido.

DIRECTORS’ MESSAGE
The Puerto Rico European Film Festival (PREFF), organized by the Alliance Française of Puerto Rico, celebrated its 16th edition in 2025 with extraordinary results, marking a milestone in its history. For the first time, the festival surpassed 7,000 attendees—an all-time record that includes theatrical screenings, professional activities, and community events. This remarkable figure clearly reflects this flagship event’s growth and development, and local audiences’ increasing engagement. Moreover, it highlights PREFF’s relevance as a showcase for Europe in Puerto Rico, thus bridging their respective cinemas.
From Nov. 6 to 13, 2026, the Festival presented an expanded program that combined major premieres of contemporary cinema, the participation of international filmmakers and experts, and a robust slate of professional activities. Held at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, the Opening Night, co-hosted by the Puerto Rican secretary of state, Rosachely Rivera Santana, brought together more than 400 guests, government officials, and representatives of the local and international creative sectors. For the following eight days, the Fine Arts Miramar theaters in San Juan welcomed an enthusiastic audience, who packed the daily screenings. The diversity of stories, the dialogue between cultures, and the collective energy experienced at each gathering made this year’s motto fully tangible: “Pantallas que abren caminos”— figuratively translated as “Screens that open new paths”—reminding us that cinema remains a space for connection, discovery, and shared opportunities.
The opening letter to PREFF’s official catalog clearly captured this spirit. The Ambassador of the Delegation of the European Union to the United States, Jovita Neliupšienė: wrote: “We come together to celebrate a vibrant selection of contemporary European cinema—films that do more than entertain; they invite reflection, debate, and dialogue about the world we live in. [...] In a time when democratic values are tested across the globe, culture reminds us of the power of solidarity and cooperation. By sharing these films here in Puerto Rico, we reaffirm our commitment to openness, cultural exchange, and freedom of expression.”
These ideas are in harmony with PREFF’s mission, underscoring the importance of steadfastly building cultural spaces that promote empathy, understanding, and dialogue among communities and countries.
PREFF 2025 also presented a stronger, expanded program for professionals, which united audiovisual and creative talents from Puerto Rico, the United States, and Europe through roundtables, workshops, thematic talks, and networking opportunities. This specialized agenda of events strengthened professional exchange and opened new possibilities for international collaboration.
The festival’s commitment to education and access was reaffirmed through initiatives such as Festenima Junior, the university program Cine Pasaje, and Cine Gira, which extend the reach of European and Puerto Rican cinema to schools, universities, and communities across the archipelago. Likewise, the packed premieres of short films produced through the Cortadito Film Lab once again highlighted the emerging talent of Puerto Rican cinema, further establishing the program as both an incubator and launch platform for new voices.
All of these achievements were made possible thanks to the support of sponsors, partners, and collaborators, as well as the cooperation of embassies, consulates, and institutions—not only from Europe but also the Americas. Their commitment confirms that cultural projects can truly transcend the sum of their parts when partners work together in the spirit of cooperation and dialogue.

Bajo la mirada plural de un nuevo comité asesor — liderado por la cineasta y artista boricua Glorimar Marrero Sánchez, el director puertorriqueño Adrián Pérez Rodríguez y la productora francesa Clémentine Mourão-Ferreira— la muestra del 16to FCEPR presentó una selección vibrante y diversa del mejor cine europeo contemporáneo.
Por primera vez, además de celebrar el formato del cortometraje en la apertura, el Festival incorporó producciones quebequenses como parte de una invitación especial a la región francófona canadiense. Entre diversos estilos y géneros, la curaduría reunió óperas primas, filmes dirigidos por mujeres, coproducciones internacionales y obras comprometidas que dialogan con las realidades puertorriqueñas, las experiencias colectivas y el presente que nos une.
Under the collective vision of a new advisory committee— led by Puerto Rican filmmaker and artist Glorimar Marrero Sánchez, Puerto Rican director Adrián Pérez Rodríguez, and French producer Clémentine MourãoFerreira—the 16th FCEPR presented a vibrant and diverse selection of the best contemporary European cinema.
For the first time, in addition to celebrating the shortfilm format at the opening, the Festival incorporated Québécois productions as part of a special invitation to the francophone Canada. Across a range of styles and genres, the curatorship brought together debut features, films directed by women, international co-productions, and socially engaged works that resonate with the lived experiences of Puerto Ricans, collective experiences, and the shared present that connects us.

INVITADOS ESPECIALES
El 16to FCEPR contó con la participación especial de 5 profesionales y figuras destacadas del cine local e internacional. Dos de estas personalidades, referentes del cine puertorriqueño, fueron homenajeados en la Noche de Apertura y en la Noche de Entrega de Premios del Festival. Los invitados internacionales presentaron en sala las películas de estreno en las que participaron y ofrecieron charlas especializadas en el programa de eventos industria.

Marcos Zurinaga (San Juan, 1952) es un cineasta puertorriqueño clave en la historia audiovisual del país. Cofundador de Zaga Films, dirigió filmes como La gran fiesta y Tango Bar, que llevaron el cine local al ámbito internacional. Su obra se distingue por una visión artística cuidada y un fuerte compromiso con la identidad puertorriqueña.Es considerado una figura fundamental en la proyección del cine puertorriqueño.
Marcos Zurinaga (San Juan, 1952) is a key Puerto Rican filmmaker in the country’s audiovisual history. Cofounder of Zaga Films, he directed films such as La gran fiesta and Tango Bar, which brought local cinema to an international stage. His work is marked by a refined artistic vision and a strong commitment to Puerto Rican identity. He is considered a fundamental figure in the global projection of Puerto Rican cinema.
The 16th edition of PREFF featured the special participation of five distinguished figures from the local and international film industries. Two of these guests—key references in Puerto Rican cinema—were honored during the Opening Night and the Festival’s Awards Ceremony. The international guests presented the premiere screenings of the films they worked on and offered specialized talks as part of the industry events program.

For his vision, his hard work, and his lasting mark on the history of cinema in Puerto Rico.
Luis Cruz (Cuba, 1941) es un poeta, escritor y crítico de cine que vive en Puerto Rico desde 1964. Fundó la Fundación de Cine de Puerto Rico y el festival CINEFIESTA, uno de los más prestigiosos del Caribe. Desde 2010 forma parte del jurado permanente del Festival Grand Off en Polonia y ha representado a Puerto Rico en numerosos festivales internacionales.
Luis Cruz (Cuba, 1941) is a poet, writer, and film critic who has lived in Puerto Rico since 1964. He founded the Puerto Rico Film Foundation and the CINEFIESTA festival, one of the Caribbean’s most prestigious short film events. Since 2010, he has served on the permanent jury of the Grand Off Festival in Poland and has represented Puerto Rico at numerous international festivals.

Ikbal Hamzaoui es doctora en Musicología por la Sorbona y pianista formada en el Instituto Superior de Música de Túnez. Profesora adjunta en esa institución, ha dirigido su departamento de musicología y coordina un taller de música latinoamericana. Fue productora de un programa de músicas del mundo en Radio Culture Tunisie y ha participado en la programación de destacados festivales tunecinos como Musiqat, el Festival Internacional de Hammamet y las Jornadas Cinematográficas de Cartago.
Ikbal Hamzaoui holds a PhD in Musicology from the Sorbonne and is a pianist trained at the Higher Institute of Music in Tunis. An associate professor there, she has directed the musicology department and coordinates a Latin American music workshop. She produced a world-music program for Radio Culture Tunisie and has contributed to the programming of major Tunisian festivals such as Musiqat, the International Festival of Hammamet, and the Carthage Film Days.
Sébastien Onomo es un productor y distribuidor francés destacado en cine y televisión, conocido por películas como Le Gang des Antillais, Funan y La Sirène. Coprodujo Augure y produjo Fanon (2025). Dirige Pathé Touch Afrique y, desde 2023, es vicepresidente del Sindicato de Productores Independientes y presidente de su colegio de animación, recibiendo ese año el premio de animación del Film Français en Annecy.
Sébastien Onomo is a French film and television producer and distributor, known for works such as Le Gang des Antillais, Funan, and La Sirène. He co-produced Augure and produced Fanon (2025). He heads Pathé Touch Afrique and, since 2023, serves as vice president of the Independent Producers’ Union and president of its animation board, receiving the Film Français Animation Award in Annecy that same year.
Ana Sanz-Magallón es consultora de guion y story editor española desde 1996, con más de 30 largometrajes desarrollados, entre ellos Alcarràs, Estiu 1993, Las niñas y Bajo las estrellas, muchos premiados en Berlín y los Goya. Ha sido tutora en talleres de desarrollo de guion en Europa y América Latina, y es autora del libro Cuéntalo bien: el sentido común aplicado a las historias. Es licenciada en Ciencias de la Información por la Universidad de Navarra y se especializó en guion en UCLA.

El 16to FCEPR fortaleció su programa anual Cortadito Film Lab, creado en 2013 para impulsar el talento cinematográfico puertorriqueño. Gracias al apoyo del National Endowment for the Arts y del Programa para el Desarrollo de la Industria Cinematográfica del Departamento de Desarollo Económico y Comercio (DDEC), este laboratorio único en la isla volvió a reunir y formar equipos profesionales mientras se produjeron seis nuevos cortometrajes originales. Entre abril y octubre de 2025, los proyectos seleccionados recibieron asesoría, recursos especializados y formación profesional. En noviembre, los cortos se estrenaron y premiaron en la competencia Cortadito del Festival, y continuarán exhibiéndose más allá de Puerto Rico a través de la Cine Gira hasta septiembre de 2026.

The 16th edition of PREFF strengthened its annual Cortadito Film Lab, created in 2013 to support emerging Puerto Rican filmmaking talent. Thanks to the support of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Film Industry Development Program of the Puerto Rico Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC), this one-of-a-kind lab once again brought together and trained professional teams while six new original short films were produced. From April to October 2025, the selected projects received mentorship, specialized resources, and professional training. In November, the shorts premiered and competed in the Festival’s Cortadito competition, and will continue to be showcased beyond Puerto Rico through the Cine Gira until September 2026.

FESTINEMA JUNIOR 2025: Festival de cine para jóvenes
El programa educativo Festinema Junior celebró una nueva edición dentro del Festival, consolidándose como una iniciativa única y gratuita en Puerto Rico para estudiantes de 3ro a 12mo grado. Realizado durante las mañanas escolares en Fine Arts Miramar, volvió a inspirar a miles de niños y adolescentes de escuelas públicas y privadas mediante una experiencia cinematográfica única: descubrir el cine en francés en la pantalla grande y aprender a través de películas de alta calidad.
En esta edición, y coincidiendo con el Día del Veterano (martes, 11 de noviembre), también se ofreció una función especial gratuita de cine en familia, diseñada para que los niños disfrutaran del Festival junto a sus padres en un ambiente accesible y emocionante. Tras su celebración en las salas de cine de San Juan, y por segundo año consecutivo, Festinema Junior llevará a cabo su propia itinerancia (Cine Gira de Festinema) entre diciembre y marzo de 2026 gracias al apoyo de la Fundación Ángel Ramos. Esta iniciativa permitirá acercar el programa a escuelas fuera de la zona metropolitana, incluidas las islas municipio de Culebra y Vieques, así como otros centros infantiles del país.

The educational program Festinema Junior celebrated a new edition within the Festival, reinforcing its role as a unique and free initiative in Puerto Rico for students from 3rd to 12th grade. Held during school mornings at Fine Arts Miramar, it once again inspired thousands of children and teenagers from public and private schools through a singular cinematic experience: discovering French-language films on the big screen and learning through high-quality cinema.
In this edition, and coinciding with Veterans Day (Tuesday, Nov. 11), a special free family screening was also offered, allowing children to enjoy the Festival alongside their parents in an accessible and exciting environment. After its run in the San Juan theaters, and for the second consecutive year, Festinma Junior will carry out its own Cine Gira between December and March 2026, thanks to the continued support of the Ángel Ramos Foundation. This initiative will bring the program to schools outside the metropolitan area, including the island municipalities of Culebra and Vieques, as well as other early educational centers across the country.

Durante los nueve días del Festival se celebraron eventos especiales —como la gala inaugural, homenajes, recepciones VIP y actividades de reconocimiento— que impulsaron el intercambio cultural y celebraron la diversidad del cine. Esta agenda reunió a miles de asistentes y consolidó al FCEPR como una plataforma de encuentro entre autoridades puertorriqueñas, el cuerpo diplomático, el sector empresarial, los medios de comunicación y la comunidad creativa local e internacional.
During the nine days of the Festival, a series of special events —including the Opening Night gala, tributes, VIP receptions, and recognition activities— fostered cultural exchange and celebrated the richness of cinema. This agenda brought together thousands of attendees, strengthening the PREFF as a key platform for connection among Puerto Rican authorities, the diplomatic corps, the business sector, the media, and the local and international creative community.

OPENING NIGHT - NOV. 5, 2025 IN MAPR, SAN JUAN
La inauguración oficial del Festival, organizada junto al Departamento de Estado de Puerto Rico en el Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR), reunió a más de 400 invitados, entre ellos la Secretaria de Estado, Rosachely Rivera Santana; el Cónsul Honorario de Francia, Antoine de Marsily; la escritora Ana Lydia Vega; y la cineasta Glorimar Marrero Sánchez. La ceremonia estuvo magistralmente conducida por Estefanía Soto, Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2020, quien aportó su vínculo con la lengua y la cultura francesa.
La noche incluyó un homenaje especial al cineasta puertorriqueño Marcos Zurinaga, realizado de manera especialmente significativa en el Teatro Raúl Juliá, figura central en su obra fílmica. Tras el reconocimiento, se proyectaron los cortometrajes de apertura, que encarnaron la reflexión “del corto al largo”, eje del quehacer del FCEPR:
• I’m Glad You’re Dead, de Tawfeek Barhom (Palestina/ Grecia/Francia, 2025), ganador de la Palma de Oro en Cannes 2025
• Esta Isla, de Cristian Carretero (Puerto Rico, 2014), ganador del mejor cortometraje de Cortadito 2014
• Partir un jour, de Amélie Bonnin (Francia, 2021), ganador del César 2021 al mejor cortometraje de ficción.
La velada concluyó con un cóctel festivo en el Gran Salon Triple-S, ambientado con la elegancia característica de Emilio Olabarrieta Event Atelier.
The Festival’s official opening, organized in collaboration with the Puerto Rico Department of State at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR), brought together more than 400 guests, including the Secretary of State of Puerto Rico, Rosachely Rivera Santana; the Honorary Consul of France, Antoine de Marsily; writer Ana Lydia Vega; and filmmaker Glorimar Marrero Sánchez. The ceremony was elegantly hosted by Estefanía Soto, Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2020, who brought her close connection to the AFPR and the French language and culture.
The evening featured a special tribute to Puerto Rican filmmaker Marcos Zurinaga, held with particular significance at the Raúl Juliá Theater—honoring the actor who played a central role in Zurinaga’s cinematic work. Following the tribute, the opening short films were presented, embodying the Festival’s annual reflection “from short to feature,” a thematic gesture that celebrates artistic evolution and creative beginnings:

La Cine Gira, programa que da itinerancia al FCEPR, amplía su alcance más allá del área metropolitana de San Juan, llevando cine local y europeo de calidad a comunidades con acceso limitado a este tipo de oferta cultural. Entre finales de 2025 y la segunda mitad de 2026, la Cine Gira ofrecerá proyecciones gratuitas que incluirán los seis cortometrajes puertorriqueños de Cortadito 2025, un cortometraje francófono caribeño y las películas educativas de Festinema Junior.
Por primera vez, esta edición llegará a las islas municipio de Vieques y Culebra, extendiendo el impacto educativo y cultural del Festival a todo el archipiélago de Puerto Rico. Además, la Cine Gira ampliará su proyección internacional con al menos tres funciones en Estados Unidos y dos en Europa, reforzando la vocación global del FCEPR.
Cine Gira, the PREFF’s touring programs, extends the Festival’s reach beyond the San Juan metropolitan area by bringing high-quality local and European cinema to communities with limited access to cultural offerings. From late 2025 through the second half of 2026, Cine Gira will present free screenings featuring the six Puerto Rican short films from Cortadito 2025, a Caribbean Francophone short film, and the Festinema Junior films.
For the first time, this edition will reach the island municipalities of Vieques and Culebra, extending the Festival’s educational and cultural impact across the entire Puerto Rican archipelago. In addition, Cine Gira will expand its international reach with at least three screenings in the United States and two in Europe, reinforcing the PREFF’s global outlook.

En su 16ª edición, el Festival desplegó una estrategia de promoción diversificada que combinó medios impresos, digitales y tradicionales. La optimización del sitio web y el fortalecimiento del marketing directo a través de las listas de correos del FCEPR y de la Alliance Française de Puerto Rico permitieron ampliar el alcance y el acceso a la información del Festival.
La visibilidad de patrocinadores y socios se reforzó mediante presencia en salas de cine, campañas digitales y materiales impresos, mientras que la creación de contenidos audiovisuales para redes sociales y la colaboración con influencers culturales contribuyeron a atraer nuevos públicos. Como novedades, se incorporaron nuevos materiales promocionales y merchandising, y se volvió a ofrecer el Catálogo Oficial en un formato optimizado para dispositivos móviles.

In its 16th edition, the Festival implemented a diversified promotional strategy combining print, digital, and traditional media. The optimization of the website and the strengthening of direct marketing through PREFF and AFPR’s mailing lists helped expand the Festival’s reach and improve access to information.
The visibility of sponsors and partners was reinforced through in-theater presence, digital campaigns, and printed materials, while the creation of audiovisual content for social media and collaboration with cultural influencers helped attract new audiences. New promotional materials and merchandising were introduced, and the Official Catalog was once again made available in a mobile-optimized format, facilitating access throughout the Festival.

Los 16 años del Festival de Cine Europeo de Puerto Rico (FCEPR), organizado por la Alliance Française de Puerto Rico (AFPR), confirman la solidez de un proyecto cultural que se ha consolidado como una de las principales plataformas de intercambio entre Puerto Rico y Europa.
Dieciséis ediciones reflejan no solo la madurez del Festival, sino también la fidelidad de un público que, año tras año, vuelve a encontrarse con el cine europeo y boricua en la experiencia irreemplazable de la gran pantalla. En un mundo actual marcado por la aceleración digital y las nuevas formas de comunicación, el FCEPR reafirma el valor del cine como espacio de emoción compartida, descubrimiento y conexión humana.
Esta edición histórica, que ha superado todos los récords de asistencia e impacto, es fruto del trabajo colectivo y de la confianza de auspiciadores, patrocinadores, aliados y miles de espectadores. Gracias por hacer posible una de las ediciones más memorables del Festival y por seguir creyendo en el cine como lugar de encuentro, cultura y comunidad.

For 16 years, the Puerto Rico European Film Festival (PREFF), organized by the Alliance Française of Puerto Rico (AFPR), has confirmed its role as the leading platform for cultural exchange between Puerto Rico and Europe.
Over the course of its sixteen editions, the Festival has grown alongside its loyal audience, returning year after year to experience and enjoy European and Puerto Rican cinema on the silver screen. In a world impacted by rapid digital change and new forms of communication, PREFF unwaveringly affirms the value of cinema as a space for shared emotion, discovery, and human connection. Surpassing all previous records for attendance and impact, this historic edition was made possible through collective effort and the trust of sponsors, partners, collaborators, and thousands of spectators.
